23 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey
Transcript
00:00Hello there, very good afternoon to you. Welcome to your latest update from the Metaphys.
00:05It certainly is shaping up to be quite the weekend for many of us, summed up quite nicely
00:09by this chart of UV levels from today. These values of 6 and 7 indicating high UV levels
00:16and a strong sunburn risk for many areas as we head into this weekend, so certainly be
00:22wary if you are out and about for prolonged periods of time, that sun cream will certainly
00:26be necessary. But for parts of Northern Ireland and Northern Scotland, values of 3 to 5 is
00:31more moderate, and that's because we've got more cloud lingering around here. That could
00:35bring the odd spot of rain and drizzle for parts of the Highlands, parts of Lewis and Harris
00:39as well today. And it will be quite breezy up towards the northwest, a bit gusty around
00:43those coastal areas, and that will make it feel certainly very different here compared
00:46to elsewhere in the UK. Highs of around 13 or 14 degrees Celsius in the northwest, but
00:51pushing towards 20 degrees Celsius, poor eastern Scotland as well as eastern counties of
00:56Northern Ireland. Many of Northern England, Wales, southwest England pushing into the mid-20s
01:02of degrees, but be aware there could be some low cloud just lingering around some western
01:06coasts in places, and that could limit the sunshine that you do see here. But those temperatures
01:11today really peaking around London into the Kent region where we could see our first 30 degrees
01:16Celsius of the year. And it is quite rare to be seeing those values at this point in the
01:23year so early. As we head into the evening period, it will stay relatively fine for many
01:29of us. There will be some late sunny spells for a lot of regions. A few mist and fog patches
01:33can't be ruled out overnight, but they'll be fairly limited and should clear off pretty
01:37quickly once we do reach dawn tomorrow morning. Temperatures in rural areas tonight could just
01:42dip down a little bit into around mid-single figures, so it could be relatively fresh for some
01:47of us. But most of our towns and cities should be holding up in double digits as we start off
01:51Sunday morning and a milder start to the day here. We do still have this rain lingering in the far
01:57northwest of Scotland, so it's still a fairly grey day to come here. And actually, that rain may turn
02:01a little bit more persistent in places, quite a damp one here. But elsewhere, it is pretty much
02:07wall-to-wall blue skies and sunshine right throughout Sunday, so plenty of fine conditions if you are
02:13wanting to step outside. Our coastal regions will provide a little bit of respite from some of that
02:18heat that's going to be building up. But be aware that sea surface temperatures at the moment are
02:22still relatively low, and so you might get a little bit of a shock when you step into the water
02:27itself.
02:28But inland, temperatures climbing up a little further tomorrow, 31 degrees Celsius possible across the
02:34southeast. And this will continue as we head into the evening, staying relatively warm for most of us
02:40into the night. The rain eventually clearing off parts of northwestern Scotland, and it will start
02:45to break up a touch more into Monday as this high pressure builds in broadly across all swathes of
02:50the UK, and it's looking to stick around into Tuesday and Wednesday as well. So there's going to be plenty
02:55of sunshine on the cards for many of us as we head into next week. And really, all eyes on
03:01the
03:01temperatures as we head into Monday. Potentially one of the hottest bank holidays on record for the UK,
03:08and also potentially our hottest ever May Day on record as well. We'll keep you up to date on all
03:15the details of that, and there's quite exceptional heats that could be building up across this weekend
03:20and into next week. So do stay tuned to the YouTube channel and subscribe as well as across all of
03:25our
03:25social media channels as well. And we'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
