25 December - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Hello and a very Merry Christmas to you.
00:02While some of us may have been a little disappointed not to work into some snow this morning,
00:06at least it's a lot drier compared to what it has been.
00:10And it's all courtesy of this large area of high pressure that's dominating northwestern parts of Europe.
00:14And on the southern side of this area of high pressure, we have got some strong winds.
00:18So in particular parts of England and Wales today, it's particularly windy.
00:21And the winds are coming in from a cold, easterly direction,
00:24drawing air in from parts of Poland and eastern parts of Europe.
00:28So it is feeling particularly cold in the south, in the breeze.
00:32And across the very far southwest of the UK, south Cornwall in particular,
00:35we could see a little bit of rain and perhaps one or two flakes of snow over the highest ground
00:39should we see that rain fringe a little bit further north.
00:42But for most of us, high pressure keeps it dry and settled.
00:46Lots of sunshine for the vast majority as well through the course of this afternoon.
00:49Just a bit more in the way of cloud across parts of Scotland and northeastern parts of England.
00:53Perhaps even the odd spittle spots will drizzle across parts of Shetland and Orkney as well.
00:59But most places will stay dry and there should be a good deal of sunshine for many of us as well.
01:05It will feel cold though, wherever you are.
01:07Highs of between three and six degrees Celsius on the thermometer for many of us,
01:11which is below average for the time of year.
01:13But when you factor in the strength of those easterly winds in the south,
01:16it will feel like it's below freezing, minus one, minus two in some spots.
01:21And not much better, not much higher than freezing further north either.
01:26Let's just focus in on the winds though across parts of Wales and southwest England
01:30through the course of this afternoon.
01:31Because we do have a yellow warning in place here.
01:34This is in place until midnight this evening.
01:37So generally it's going to be quite a blustery easterly wind
01:40that's going to potentially bring some travel disruption in places.
01:43The odd tree branch coming down, maybe some interruptions to power as well,
01:47particularly because it's from a fairly unusual direction.
01:51We could see potentially gusts as high as 65 miles per hour over the highest ground
01:55and in some exposed coastal regions too.
01:57And with those winds coming on shore, we could see some quite large waves as well.
02:01So something to bear in mind if you are travelling around
02:03through the course of this afternoon and this evening.
02:06But otherwise, further north, the winds will be quite a bit lighter
02:08and actually we'll see some fog patches,
02:11some which may not have cleared through the course of this afternoon
02:13across parts of the highlands of Scotland,
02:16reforming through the course of tonight.
02:18Otherwise, staying dry, a mixture of cloud and clear spells.
02:21And where we see the skies stay clearest for longest,
02:24well, temperatures will fall below freezing,
02:25particularly further north where winds are lighter.
02:28Fairly widespread frost across parts of Scotland, for example.
02:30But further south, a bit more touch and go.
02:32Most places, most towns and cities at least,
02:34staying a fraction above freezing just thanks to that fairly brisk easterly wind.
02:40But for Boxing Day, it's looking like another fine day of weather to come.
02:43There may be a bit more in a way of cloud compared to today
02:46across parts of southern England, for example.
02:48For most places, we'll see quite a good deal of winter sunshine.
02:52So certainly a nice day to stretch your legs
02:54and perhaps burn off that Christmas Day lunch.
02:56And there will be a bit more in a way of cloud
02:58perhaps across more northeastern parts of Scotland
03:00and northeastern parts of England.
03:01But here, at least, the winds won't be as strong as further south.
03:05So highs of six or seven degrees Celsius.
03:07And even in the south, temperatures perhaps a shade higher
03:10compared to Christmas Day.
03:11And the wind's not quite as bitter and not quite as strong either.
03:16Now, there's not going to be a huge amount of change
03:17as we go into the weekend as well.
03:19High pressure is going to keep it generally dry and settled for most of the UK.
03:22It may well be a bit cloudier for some areas on Saturday.
03:26The best of the sunshine probably towards more western parts of the UK.
03:29And temperatures, again, fairly close to average for the time of year.
03:33Perhaps just nudging up ever so slightly.
03:35Highs of seven or eight degrees in the south.
03:37But potentially staying much colder than that
03:40if any fall patches do linger.
03:42For example, where the winds are lighter further north.
03:45Into Sunday, and it's really a case to spot the difference.
03:47There's not going to be a huge amount of change.
03:49Perhaps a bit more in a way of cloud overall.
03:51But I still fancy there'll be a few sunnier breaks,
03:54particularly across Scotland and more northwestern parts of the UK.
03:57But generally, probably a bit cloudier compared to previous days.
04:01And temperatures, on the face of it, five to seven degrees.
04:04Not too far away from average.
04:06But certainly feeling cold where any fall patches linger
04:09and underneath that cloud.
04:11Whatever you're up to, though, through the rest of Christmas,
04:13do make sure you have a lovely one.
04:15And I'll see you again very soon.
