22 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00We have a northwest-southeast split across the UK today. Towards the southeast, lots of blue sky, lots of sunshine,
00:06and it's going to be pretty hot as well.
00:08Towards the northwest, however, there's a waving frontal feature, and that's bringing more cloud, outbreaks of rain, and here temperatures
00:15peg back a little bit.
00:17But yes, hot air coming in from the south, leading to our temperatures rising. For some, the heat wave starts
00:23today.
00:24But through this afternoon, staying quite cloudy at times across much of Scotland and Northern Ireland, there'll be a few
00:30outbreaks of rain here and there.
00:32Perhaps the rain more persistent and heavier later on this afternoon across parts of Northern Ireland.
00:37For much of England and Wales, however, a much brighter story.
00:41Yes, there will be some cloud towards northern and western parts, but on the whole, a good deal of sunshine.
00:46And with that sunshine, like I said, it's going to be turning pretty hot.
00:50Mid-20s, even high-20s for many places, 30 Celsius can't be ruled out towards the London area.
00:57Meanwhile, for Scotland and Northern Ireland, where there's more cloud, temperatures markedly lower.
01:01But even here, they are above average for the time of year.
01:04Through the evening and overnight, we have more persistent rain across Northern Ireland, feeding in across parts of Scotland.
01:10And then we also have a band of rain making its way eastwards across parts of England and Wales.
01:14And actually, ahead of this, we could see some hefty showers, perhaps, particularly over parts of Wales, maybe the odd
01:19rumble of thunder.
01:20But then as that front pushes its way eastwards, well, it's just going to bring a relatively short-lived spell
01:25of rain for some parts of England and Wales.
01:28Away from those zones of wetter weather, a lot of dry weather around through the night and some clear skies.
01:33Temperatures not dropping a huge amount, however, most places holding up in double digits, mid-teens or even high-teens
01:39in some places.
01:40So a relatively warm start to the day on Saturday for most.
01:44But yes, there will be a bit of rain across some central and then later eastern parts as that front
01:49continues to clear away towards the east through Saturday morning.
01:52And a bit of rain towards the far northwest of the UK as well.
01:55But on the whole, it's looking like a generally dry day and plenty of sunshine yet again across Scotland and
02:01Northern Ireland.
02:02It's looking a bit brighter than through Friday with some breaks in the clouds, some sunshine breaking through.
02:07And again, similar to today, across particularly central, southern and eastern parts of England, lots of sunshine on offer here.
02:14And in fact, across some parts of the southeast, it could be even hotter than today.
02:19So low 30s perhaps more likely, but many places seeing temperatures still well above average for the time of year.
02:25Through the evening on Saturday, staying fine for most places.
02:29But do bear in mind sea surface temperatures are low at this time of year.
02:33And in areas where we have the wind coming in from the sea, it could turn a bit chilly through
02:37Saturday night and into Sunday.
02:39And there could be a few pockets of fog first thing on Sunday morning as well.
02:43But otherwise, through the long weekend, well, the main story being the fact that we have some exceptionally hot weather
02:49for May.
02:50The heat wave is set to continue as we go into next week.
02:53And, well, we could see our record temperature for May being exceeded.
02:58Plenty of sunshine.
02:59Watch out for high UV levels and make sure whatever you're doing to enjoy the sunny and hot weather safely.
03:05For more information about just how hot it's going to be and what's causing it all,
03:10well, Aidan and I will be delving into that in this week's Weather Studio Live.
03:13You can either catch that live or watch it back at your pleasure on our YouTube channel.
03:18Bye bye.
