00:00Hello there, welcome to your Thursday morning weather update from the Met Office.
00:04Two key features of the weather today, thunderstorms and a chilly northerly wind.
00:08First of all, let's focus in on this warning zone, which is covering northern England,
00:14also for Anglesea and the north of Wales.
00:17This is where those thunderstorms are really primed.
00:20We're likely to see 15, 20 millimetres in an hour,
00:23so some torrential downpours with the risk of thunder, lightning and hail.
00:27So some quite challenging driving conditions if you are out and about, particularly through this morning.
00:33Now we are likely to see some heavy thundry showers further south,
00:36but it's really here we're likely to see those higher rainfall totals
00:39and the risk of some perhaps even flash flooding if you see a particularly heavy and prolonged downpour.
00:46The other feature of the weather will be the northerly wind,
00:49affecting in particular Scotland and Northern Ireland through the day.
00:53It's allowed some showers to stream in.
00:56They could be heavy at times, as this feature here pushes ever south-eastwards.
01:01So the chance of those showers, heavy showers at that, extending southwards
01:05and then a cool northerly wind as we head through into Friday,
01:09meaning temperatures will be even lower than today.
01:12With that, shower activity will dampen down across the north,
01:15but yet again we could see some heavier downpours across central and southern areas.
01:20This morning then a lot of cloud for Shetland, Orkney perhaps under some cloud breaks,
01:25but showers never too far away.
01:27And these showers continuing to move in on that brisk breeze,
01:29moving quite quickly across Scotland and some just developing across Northern Ireland as well.
01:35Here's that area of thunderstorms, which again will bring some impacts through rush hour this morning.
01:41And we could see some quite lively downpours across Wales as well as the west country.
01:45Some clearer skies across the Midlands towards the south-east.
01:49A cooler start to the day here, but certainly a bright one with some sunshine.
01:53So through the morning we watch as this system here, associated with low pressure,
01:58brings some brisk breezes towards coastal districts of Wales, southern and central England.
02:03Now further north, that cold wind will keep things rather chilly along the coastline
02:07and again delivering those showers.
02:10The warning expires at 10am, but those thunderstorms are likely to rumble on through the day.
02:17Fairly slow moving, some high rainfall totals into the afternoon
02:20and developing in situ further south as we head into the afternoon.
02:24At the same time, some brighter breaks, perhaps western Scotland, Northern Ireland in shelter
02:29and those showers fairly scattered towards the north.
02:32But look at these temperatures, 15, 16, 17 degrees Celsius.
02:35We're hanging on to temperatures just into the 20s, anywhere from east Wales towards the south-east.
02:40But you'll notice the difference across northern England, particularly if you catch a heavy thunderstorm.
02:46Yes, temperatures falling temporarily and only struggling up to 18 or 19 Celsius through the afternoon.
02:52That wind will be a feature as well across Irish seacoast, the south coast of England.
02:57And those thunderstorms could rumble on into the evening time.
03:01They'll become fairly scattered and there will be some clearer skies.
03:05A chillier night to come, but certainly showers never too far away across windward-facing coasts
03:10into the early hours of Friday morning.
03:12Some clearer skies inland.
03:14So here are your temperatures into Friday.
03:17Towns and cities probably 8 or 9 for Scotland, 10 for Northern Ireland.
03:22We could see temperatures dipping down to 9 across, say, the Midlands and East Wales.
03:26But the Glens of Scotland could be even lower than that.
03:29So quite a chilly start to the day, hanging on to double figures towards the south there.
03:34There'll be more in the way of cloud, just coming and going.
03:37And again, those showers first thing.
03:39Now, this feature here will bring some showers to England and Wales as we head through the day,
03:44as one just clears towards the near continent.
03:47An area of cloud also for northern Scotland, with a few showers in the wind.
03:53A few showers, but some brighter skies.
03:55For Northern Ireland, they'll be fairly scattered.
03:58However, as we head through the afternoon, these showers could again intensify across England and Wales,
04:03associated with this occlusion pushing southwards.
04:06As temperatures arrive 17 for the central belt of Scotland.
04:10To the north of the central belt, only 14 or 15.
04:13And 16 for Northern Ireland.
04:15A degree or so lower relative to today across northern England, northern parts of Wales.
04:20And again, a couple of degrees lower across central southern parts of England and Wales.
04:25Through Friday evening, those showers continue.
04:27They could be heavy.
04:29The odd rumble of thunder can't be ruled out.
04:30But into Saturday after a chilly morning, you'll see a ridge of high pressure coming in.
04:35So fewer showers away from the far north and northwest of Scotland.
04:37A lighter breeze, and that's how we see Sunday as well.
04:40Clouds will break, allowing for some brighter skies.
04:43Windward coast could see a few showers just drifting in.
04:46And then more rain through the latter part of Sunday across the far north of Scotland.
04:51So here's your outlook through Saturday.
04:53Not entirely dry.
04:55Could see a few light showers.
04:57And temperatures up a notch as well.
04:58So feeling a bit warmer in any brighter breaks.
05:01And into Sunday, it's a similar situation.
05:04Although likely to see more clouds across more northern and western areas associated with some rain coming in later.
05:09And again, there is a chance of one or two light showers as well.
05:12Temperatures at the very best, 17 to 22 degrees Celsius.
05:16Wherever you are, take care.
05:18Stay up to date with the forecast, certainly for the warnings for today, for thunderstorms.
05:22And I'll see you again soon.
05:23On the left of the minute, I'll see you again soon.
05:24We'll be right back in the end.
