00:00All right, welcome back. It's the GBAC Nation here on 105.3 The Fan.
00:04And segment's brought to you by the Frankels.
00:06Life's unpredictable. Accidents happen if you're a loved one's injured in a car or truck wreck.
00:10Call the Frankels first. 214 or 817-333-3333. Jump online at Frankelfirm.com.
00:17You know, Matt Hicks gave player of the game in the postgame to Jacob Latz,
00:23who ended up getting the win, and Josh Young.
00:26He could have also given it to Jake Berger and Justin Foscue.
00:31This could have been a four-way tie for player of the game.
00:34It took everybody. We talked a couple of nights ago about how this week,
00:38with now Seager out and Wyatt Langford out, we needed role players to step up
00:42and maybe have some of their best weeks of the season.
00:45And at least for the last two nights, they did that.
00:47And they absolutely could have swept the Rockies.
00:50So hopefully this is a turning point. They're playing better. They're scoring more runs.
00:54I mean, that's quite a few runs. What are we looking at over the last four games?
00:5729 runs? 29 runs in seven games.
01:01That's what I call a turning point, Wolchuk.
01:02Yeah, the offense is looking much better. I mean, I think that you're right about Berger
01:05when you include that defensive play.
01:07Yes.
01:08Because you would have lost. I mean, if he's not able to make that diving snag,
01:10that would have been two runs right there. He saves that off the board.
01:13So I think that that's a great point.
01:15And I did do some research on the win and a save.
01:19And I guess it's the win overrides the save.
01:22Okay.
01:22So you can't get both, according to the official rulebook of MLB.com and their glossary rules.
01:27So that is unfortunate, because I do think that would have been kind of cool.
01:29But the win supersedes the save in this case, so that's why you give Latz the win.
01:34But I think Latz has been brilliant.
01:36It should be dealer's choice at that point.
01:37Yeah, like for him, does it end up being better?
01:40Might have incentives.
01:41Yeah, exactly, with the saves there.
01:43But you're right.
01:44I mean, Justin Fossey, if he can continue this, because I do think you're kind of open at second base.
01:49And I think him and Ezekiel Durant have made this really, really interesting.
01:52Whenever, God willing, Josh Smith is healthy, what do you do now?
01:56And that would be a great problem to have, because I do think for Josh Smith,
02:00he's had success in the big leagues being that utility role, playing off the bench.
02:04Whether you need a fill-in at shortstop, do I need him over at first base for an outing,
02:08third base, the outfield.
02:09He's basically been one of these guys that's a Swiss Army knife that you can play anywhere,
02:13and he's had success.
02:14He clearly was struggling to really grab a hold of that everyday second base spot prior to the injury
02:19and then prior now to this meningitis.
02:21But it's been great to see what Foskey and Ezekiel Durant have been doing.
02:24I think Durant's here to stay.
02:26I think Durant's real.
02:27Foskey, can you now extrapolate really a good series into this is legit now,
02:32and we can go ahead and expect this moving forward?
02:35You know, and that's a great thought.
02:37I would not bet on that for either Durant or Foskey or Smith.
02:42You know, I think what you've got to do now is play the hot hand.
02:47And hopefully one of them is hot at any given time, but I wouldn't bet on it.
02:52You know, if I could trade all three of them for a better second baseman, I would do that.
02:55You know, you might be onto something, because I did see there was an article,
02:58I want to say it was the athletic, like, who would be the most likely ranger to be traded.
03:02And Foskey is a guy.
03:04Oh, really?
03:04That was listed.
03:06And maybe he is a player that gets hot here.
03:09Now he's young.
03:10So I think some ranger fans might be driving around like,
03:11why the hell would you want to trade Justin Foskey?
03:13But if you could get something for him in a package,
03:16because you really don't have a lot of AAA assets right now in the farm,
03:19a lot of your guys are at single A, maybe they can move up to double A
03:23when you get closer to that deadline.
03:24But, like, you're not moving on from some of the other options that you have right now,
03:29and your best ace in the hole isn't even playing right now because of the elbow surgery.
03:32That would be something if CY traded Foskey when he blew up at, like, a three- or four-year
03:39run.
03:40I don't know if fans could take it again.
03:42After the Liam Hicks situation that's going on right now.
03:44I mean, you've had a couple of these pitchers and now Hicks.
03:48Reagan's.
03:49You know, maybe you don't want to do that.
03:51But I'd say you've seen enough.
03:52This is Foskey's third year in the bigs, and he's finally having a good week.
03:55If somebody was willing to, say, give you an outfielder with some pop.
04:00I'd take that gamble.
04:03Yeah, I'm definitely open-minded to anything that it takes.
04:06And right now, I'm excited about how the Rangers played today
04:11and the idea of them sticking around 500 until the trade market heats up.
04:17Because what Evan Grant said a couple of days ago, I think, is playing pretty loudly for me right now.
04:23And he said he got the strong feeling the Rangers aren't going to be compromising at the deadline,
04:29kind of hedging between buying and selling or doing sort of medium moves.
04:34This is going to be a full-on move.
04:36And I feel like if they would slide 10 games under, we know what that would look like for Ray.
04:42And the other element of this is, if you peek ahead at the 2027 free agent class, it's pretty mediocre.
04:49It's not a very strong free agency class.
04:51Like, your highlights are Boba Shad with the Mets, who's been pretty meh to this point in the season.
04:56Chaz Chisholm with the Yankees, who's also...
04:59I don't think he's got a positive war.
05:02At least he didn't as of last week.
05:04And then it's a bunch of pitchers.
05:05But, I mean, otherwise, those are kind of your top hitters.
05:09Ian Happ and Seah Suzuki, if you're looking for outfielders.
05:12But it is not...
05:14Alec Boehm might be a guy that I'd be interested in if he hits free agency.
05:17But there's not a whole lot of guys that are getting you super excited when you look at the free
05:22agent class.
05:22So if you really want to make a big splash to improve the team,
05:24it's probably going to have to be on the trade market.
05:26Yeah, we need a DH and an outfielder that can absolutely bomb.
05:31Okay, Mavs presser earlier.
05:35Number of talking points.
05:37People reacting to Ujiri saying,
05:40I have to be accountable with a decision like this.
05:43I also have to be very active in how I look at the organization from top to bottom.
05:47So that was interesting.
05:50If you juxtapose that against the announcement last night of this is a mutual decision.
05:54You know, so we're obviously in the business of being media and fans of trying to interpret what these sentences
06:03mean.
06:04Did he just say that was his idea and maybe it wasn't mutual?
06:07You know, what does that mean?
06:09And if it's not mutual, that means it's a clear firing and the Mavs are going to pay the full
06:14$40 million to move on from Jason Kidd.
06:17And, you know, I love knowing that my team has the financial wherewithal and backing and conviction to buy themselves
06:25out of bad decisions.
06:26Because most teams don't.
06:28That's a big positive that I've taken from this.
06:31And the other element is like, look, the Luka trade, I think, is now we can finally put this behind
06:37us.
06:37I think this was the finishing piece of all of that.
06:39And that's kind of when Masai Ujiri says clean slate to me.
06:41That's really what he's talking about here.
06:43But I do think the financial backing of ownership, and clearly they've got deep pockets that you didn't have with
06:49Mark Cuban,
06:49a big reason why he wanted to sell the team, them being willing to, yeah, we'll bite the bullet on
06:54this $40 million and move on from this coach,
06:57which I think is ultimately happening.
06:58I don't know how mutual this was.
07:00I kind of got the vibe from listening to like Sham Sharanya talk earlier.
07:03This was more so a Masai Ujiri decision.
07:06And this doesn't really fit.
07:08I think that there was probably going to be a little bit of a power struggle here.
07:13You have Jason Kidd who obviously had front office aspirations.
07:16He didn't get that.
07:17If Masai Ujiri is going to be the guy, you don't want to have a constant tiff here with your
07:21head coach
07:22who would like to have more say-so and roster control.
07:24And Masai Ujiri, who's like, nah, man, this is going to be my decision here.
07:28So I don't think that that was really ever going to work.
07:30So Masai Ujiri is getting ahead of this thing.
07:32But I do think that that, as a Maverick fan, as frustrating as what has been with this ownership group,
07:39Patrick Ramon, I think, is a guy who's going to be hands-off.
07:41He's going to let the basketball people that he's paying make those decisions.
07:44But I think he also, you have that financial support and backing to go ahead and do that second apron
07:49stuff.
07:50And all that, I mean, because honestly, the entire salary cap with the NBA goes way over my head.
07:57It makes absolutely no damn sense.
07:59But I think you've got an ownership group with deep enough pockets to keep you contending if you're in that
08:03position.
08:04Yeah.
08:04And, you know, all signs are pointing towards that.
08:08You know, I think Jason Kidd could be a great coach in the NBA.
08:12Maybe he's got to have short stints.
08:14Maybe he's kind of like Parcells, where he's going to insist on things being his way so much
08:19and being such a control freak that after three, four years, it's time to move on.
08:24But it's not going to be in a front office led by a powerful personality like Masai Ujiri,
08:30who's really imposing his will on everything.
08:34And I think ultimately they knew that it wasn't going to be a great working relationship,
08:40you know, or in the best interest of either party for it to continue like that.
08:44So Mavs have a new coach.
08:46A-1-7 says, trade Cooper flag for Luka.
08:50I think for the first time in this story arc, I'm at the point where I wouldn't do that.
08:55I don't think you need to do that.
08:57I think that your best case scenario is Luka, and we got the 2-on-4 bring Luka home in
09:012028.
09:02Yeah.
09:03I believe that that could happen.
09:04And I believed it prior before really learning,
09:07because I didn't really want to believe that Jason Kidd had anything to do with the Luka trade.
09:11Like, now it's obvious that he did.
09:13And that sucks.
09:15But I think that's why you've seen Luka and him.
09:17When they've played, Luka wants nothing to do with Jason Kidd.
09:20Oh, my gosh.
09:21And they're not having any interaction.
09:22So now I think, look, he's still got a home here.
09:24I mean, Jeannie Buss talked about it.
09:25His heart's been in Dallas.
09:27I think that that could be a very real possibility.
09:29And your best chance to compete would be to keep Cooper flag and Adeluka Doncic.
09:32It's not to move on from one or the other.
09:35Yeah.
09:35No, you're absolutely right.
09:36I mean, it makes it a lot more realistic.
09:39And if LeBron's going to move on or retire.
09:41And by that time, the Kyrie contract would probably be off your books.
09:45I mean, the Lakers just don't have the kind of roster to win with Luka.
09:49So unless he really wants to stay in Southern California or loves being a Laker, and that's possible.
09:55You know, it's a different kind of lifestyle.
09:57It's a better weather.
09:58Yeah.
09:58You know, there's just there's some things that are attractive for people from Southern California.
10:02But you also are adding three hours to your flight back to Europe both ways.
10:07So that's six hours of travel time.
10:08You know, there's a lot of stuff to consider.
10:10But, yes, for the first time, I feel like that's realistic now as well, you know, because Jason Kidd is
10:17gone.
10:17And Masai Ujiri and Michael Schmitz have a very extensive history in Europe.
10:23And the relationships they've built might end up paying off in a very big way there.
10:29The list of candidates put together by Mike Curtis in the morning news includes Jared Dudley, former Mavs assistant.
10:34He's a very fast rising assistant.
10:37Could have actually kept playing.
10:38But he got talked into, no, you should become an assistant coach because you're amazing at that.
10:43So he did that.
10:44And now two years later, he's getting a bunch of interviews for head coaching opportunities.
10:49Sean Sweeney.
10:50Is it a coincidence he gets to San Antonio and they might upset the Thunder and win the championship?
10:55No, no.
10:56I mean, I don't think so.
10:57I don't think his finger.
10:57Everywhere he's been, you've seen, even when Detroit was bad and he was there, like they were still a competitive
11:03team defensively.
11:04He's like a Vic Fangio of NBA defense.
11:06Now, how good of a head coach will he be?
11:08I don't know.
11:09Is he a guy that the players love?
11:10I don't know any of that information.
11:11I think he's very intense and has an eye for detail and isn't very patient.
11:16And sometimes that's the perfect assistant coach.
11:18But as a head coach, you fly off the handle too much.
11:21You know what it's like trying to relate to Gen Z.
11:24If you want to take something serious, it's almost like they rebel from that.
11:28You got Billy Donovan.
11:29You got Micah Norrie with the T-Wolves.
11:31And you got Frank Vogel, who's actually currently on staff at the Mavs.
11:34He's an NBA champion head coach with the Lakers and I believe took the Suns to the finals as well.
11:40I think they've moving on from Vogel, it sounds like.
11:42I think the only guy that they're maintaining from the previous coaching staff was Phil Handy.
11:46Matt Ricciardi, DFW's own.
11:48Another really cool local story with these Mavs that Nico ruined.
11:52You know, a couple years ago, he's living his dream life.
11:55He grows up in Plano.
11:57He's a basketball scout.
11:59Plano Senior High guy.
11:59He's an assistant GM with the Mavs, working arm-in-arm with Michael Finley, supporting Nico.
12:05Next thing you know, Nico trades Luka.
12:08Jason Kidd signs off it.
12:10And two years later, Ricciardi's got to go.
12:11Or 15 months later, really.
12:13Just, you know, now it's Michael Finley up for evaluation.
12:19And Masai said they've kept a couple of coaches, including Phil Handy, a player development assistant who's highly respected, worked
12:27with Masai in Toronto.
12:29But I think we're going to hear about Finley maybe in the next couple of days or a couple of
12:34weeks.
12:35Okay, so a lot of winds of change are blowing.
12:39Henry Abbott, true hoop.
12:42And this is for folks out there, you know, that might not understand the complexity of Jason Kidd's personality.
12:51Henry Abbott had, like, the first great NBA blog in the 2000s.
12:55It was called True Hoop.
12:56And his report was really shocking because it's scorching.
13:00And he has never been an opinion guy.
13:02Like, Henry Abbott is not a hot taker.
13:04He's not an insider.
13:05He doesn't do takedowns.
13:07It was just all like, hey, here's what NBA sources are saying.
13:10Just that kind of blogging stuff, right?
13:13Henry tweets, I covered Jason Kidd when he played for the Nets.
13:15I know one of his childhood friends.
13:17I've been to his house, met his kids and his wife and his Pilates instructor.
13:21And I have insight from many people who have worked with him in his coaching years.
13:25This is a great firing.
13:28Ouch.
13:28Yeah, that was a fascinating tweet.
13:30I mean, if he knows the Pilates instructor, this dude's getting the info.
13:34He's freaking dialed.
13:35But, yeah, Brian Wynhorse on NBA today when asked if OKC would pick.
13:3912-17 and 37, he said, I don't believe they will.
13:43They want to move inside for a top 10 pick.
13:47And that's why the Mavs angle is out there.
13:50Now, 12-17 for 9.
13:54I like what Bobby Cruella was saying.
13:57You know, and it's – is it darts?
14:01Is it scratch-it tickets?
14:03It's not a full-on lottery ticket.
14:04It's not like we're trying to find our next starting quarterback in the seventh round.
14:07But pick 17, the probabilities of that guy being a long-term starter aren't great.
14:12At 12, though, you're getting into some pretty hollowed ground as far as the history of what that pick has
14:19been.
14:19Reggie Miller, Kobe Bryant, Clyde Drexler.
14:22Like, you can find some ballers just outside the top 10.
14:26So, I wouldn't be afraid of that.
14:29You know, this draft stretches.
14:30Now, I'm talking to my scouts.
14:33Is anybody in love – does anybody think that if we don't take this guy at 9, we're letting the
14:39greatest opportunity slide?
14:41Sure.
14:41You know, because there are some players inside that top 10 might have had a back injury, might not have
14:46shot the ball incredibly well.
14:47But their upside, because of some of the traits they have, are every bit as good as some of the
14:53guys that are going to go inside the top five or six.
14:55So, that's where you really got to trust your scouts.
14:58Spurs and Thunder, game two tonight, 7-30 on NBC.
15:02There have been 25 instances of road teams winning the first two games of a seven-game series in the
15:10NBA.
15:10Road team taking the first two.
15:13We're going into enemy territory as the underdog.
15:16Those teams that do it, lower seeds, they're 21-4 all time.
15:21Wow.
15:22So, it's a wrap.
15:23They can get it done tonight.
15:24I think this thing probably gets evened up tonight.
15:27But, man, I'm excited.
15:28And I weirdly am pulling for San Antonio.
15:31I just caught myself watching that game, and I'm rooting for Wemby.
15:35Yeah.
15:35And there's something about this OKC team.
15:37I don't really get the hate that SGA gets.
15:39I don't view him as, like, this free-throw merchant that everybody else does.
15:42But I just was pulling for San Antonio.
15:45It's probably the one and only time I'm going to do this.
15:47Wemby's so easy to root for.
15:48He's just likable.
15:49There's something great about the seven wonders of the world and guys that are that tall with that kind of
15:53a skill set.
15:54And then, obviously, it's easy to root against the champ because they're the favorite and you're rooting for the upset
16:00a little bit.
16:00But, yeah, there's an 84% chance, historically, of winning the series if the Spurs win.
16:05But you also have to consider they've won five of six.
16:08Yeah.
16:08You know?
16:09Look, Lucius was on it, man.
16:10He did.
16:10This is a bad matchup for OKC.
16:12He might have absolutely nailed it.
16:14What if they sweep him?
16:16That would be insane.
16:17If they sweep him, dude.
16:18Well, you talk about maybe trying to get some of those guards in a trade with OKC like Case and
16:22Wallace that Bobby Corral threw out there.
16:24They get swept.
16:25Yeah, I think you do.
16:26They are probably looking at the drawing board there.
16:28And how about the Knicks last night?
16:30Yeah.
16:30I was thinking about you.
16:31They're asking.
16:32There's eight minutes left.
16:33It's like the Cavs are going, BTA.
16:34I put out that tweet.
16:3518-1 run.
16:37The Knicks go on.
16:40643-0 is what teams who held a 20-point lead or more of the seven minutes remaining were.
16:46It's now 643-1 thanks to Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.
16:50That was unbelievable.
16:51That's team of destiny stuff.
16:53Mavs did stuff similar in their run in 11.
16:56They were down 15 with like five minutes to play against the Thunder and the Heat.
16:59Yeah.
16:59Came back and won those games.
17:01Game two against Miami.
17:01But 20 with seven to go.
17:03That's crazy.
