00:00All right, welcome back. It's time now for the Chris Young Show here on your home of the Rangers, brought
00:05to you by Medical City Healthcare and by Lexus. Visit your local Dallas-Fort Worth Lexus dealership today. Pre-game's
00:11coming up at 6 as the Rangers are in St. Louis to take on the Cards, and Chris Young joins
00:16us now here on the fan. Good afternoon, sir. How the heck are you?
00:19Hey, guys. I'm well. How are you?
00:21We're doing good, man. That was fun. What's top of mind here as far as building momentum off sweeping the
00:29Royals going into this series against the Cardinals?
00:32Yeah, it was a good way to really salvage the homestand. To come out of the homestand with a winning
00:37record was big.
00:38Obviously, it started on really a bad note with getting no hit and then losing three out of four to
00:44our division rival.
00:46But, again, the team did exactly what I hoped they would, which was show a lot of resolve and fight.
00:52You know, again, they didn't quit. They came out. They found ways to win. We played small ball. We ended
01:01up slugging some.
01:02And we pitched really, really well. And so I think as we go into this week, playing a very good
01:07St. Louis team, coming home and then having Cleveland, which is very good,
01:11we need to continue what we did against Kansas City. We need to continue the starting pitching, which was phenomenal
01:17against Casey between Gore, Rocker, and Leiter.
01:20They allowed us to play from ahead, allow us to get early leads, and then it really dictates the rest
01:25of the game where we get to use our winning arms
01:29and the other team uses their non-winning arms when you have a lead.
01:33So it's so important to play from ahead. And when you have good starting pitching that goes out and did
01:36what they did, it gives you the opportunity to do that.
01:39So we've got to see it continue. We've got a challenge this week going on the road and coming home
01:44and playing two good teams.
01:45But, again, when our guys play the way they did this weekend, you know, I think we can play with
01:50anybody.
01:51Yeah, yeah. And, you know, going to the ninth inning on Saturday night to pull that one out, you mentioned
01:57the resiliency.
01:58Is that the third time this has happened, though, in 60 games? It kind of feels like your guys have
02:02a knack for that now.
02:04Well, it's interesting you say it because I think the previous couple of years, we really didn't come from behind.
02:10I mean, when we were down, I think last year or maybe the year before, I can't remember, but when
02:14we were down, the game was over.
02:15I think there was a year where we had, from the seventh inning on, I don't think we had a
02:19come-from-behind win.
02:21I think it was 23.
02:23Was it 23?
02:24Yeah.
02:25I mean, let's see. I can't remember. I know that we have not historically been, the last few seasons, a
02:29team that has played well when we've been down.
02:32And this group seems to find a way to do that.
02:35I know we had a big win in Sacramento against the Athletics earlier this season where the team lost the
02:40lead in the eighth inning.
02:41And then we responded and scored, I think, four or five in the ninth inning to win the game.
02:45And that's what the game this weekend felt like when we lost the lead in, I think, the seventh or
02:50the eighth.
02:51And then responded and found a way to score the runs in the ninth to win it.
02:55So it is a good quality to have.
02:57My hope is that we don't have to do it too often.
03:00So, Y, there's been some social media buzz of maybe some new faces in the clubhouse.
03:05Is there any transactions you can share with us?
03:09Yeah, and I'm not with the team in St. Louis.
03:11So I can't, I don't know when they are being announced, if Skip has already announced them.
03:16But we are, we are selecting Robbie Allstrom, left-handed pitcher from AAA.
03:22We optioned Gavin Collier.
03:26And so that's the first move.
03:28We've got another one in the works that I can't comment on yet.
03:30And then the second one is Sam Haggerty is on the family medical emergency list.
03:36And so we've recalled Cody Freeman to replace Sam for these next three days as Sam is dealing with a
03:43personal matter.
03:44So there are a couple new faces.
03:46There may be another third move that's pending.
03:49I'm waiting for more information.
03:50But definitely those two.
03:52What can you tell us about Mr. Allstrom Hayden?
03:57Yeah, Robbie's had a great first couple months of the season.
04:00Left-handed pitcher.
04:01He has real power, fastball that he can run up to 97 miles an hour, solid breaking ball.
04:08He's a very good competitor, strike thrower.
04:10I think with Robert Garcia down, Robbie will add a power left-handed version to our bullpen, aside from Jake
04:18Latz, who's now our closer.
04:21And so it'll complement Jalen Beeks and Tyler Alexander and maybe allow them to pitch in some different roles.
04:28It'll set all those guys up for success.
04:30But, you know, this weekend we saw Beeks and Alexander come into some tough situations.
04:34They had to face some right-handed pockets, which they're not perfectly designed to do.
04:40You know, our bullpen has shifted roles this year with Robert Garcia and Chris Martin both struggling a little bit
04:48and then being on the injured list.
04:49And then Jake Latz going from maybe a long man slash starter to now the back-end leverage bullpen, closer
04:57role in the bullpen.
04:58So we've had to put some different guys in different situations and, you know, not perfectly the way we designed
05:05it coming out of spring training.
05:07But that's what happens over the course of the season.
05:09And the guys, for the most part, have pitched very well.
05:11But Robbie will add another dimension to our bullpen, and we're excited to see him.
05:14He's a great guy and a competitor, and he's been in big league spring training with us.
05:20And my hope is that he gets off to a good start here.
05:23Okay.
05:23And what can you tell us about a couple of familiar faces that fans are anxious to see in Seager
05:28and Lankford getting some rehab work going?
05:32Yeah, both those guys are doing very well.
05:34Wyatt's played in two rehab games now, and Corey, we anticipate, is either going to be playing tomorrow or Wednesday
05:40or maybe both.
05:42He's faith-like pitching.
05:44They're both progressing very, very well.
05:46They're both pain-free, and now it's about building up the baseball activity and making sure that they're ready to
05:51return to Major League games.
05:52But I can't emphasize how important those two are to our team and our success.
05:58We've done our best to try to keep our head above water while we've been without those guys.
06:03But to get those guys back, a healthy Corey and a healthy Wyatt will boost our team,
06:08especially if they come back hot and perform at the level that we think they can.
06:12And so we're trying not to rush them.
06:16But that said, they're so important to our season.
06:18We want them back as soon as possible, and they're getting close.
06:20Is Wednesday or Friday this weekend realistic?
06:26Certainly not before the weekend.
06:28And I don't want to get our fans excited, hoping it's the weekend.
06:31I hope it's the weekend.
06:33I put a lot of pressure on our training staff to try to do everything we can to get these
06:38guys back as soon as possible.
06:39That said, we have to be responsible.
06:41And if they're not ready this weekend, that's okay.
06:44We'd rather have them back healthy for the duration of the season than to bring them back a game or
06:48two early when they're not quite ready.
06:51So the weekend is not ruled out, but we're not committed to that yet.
06:55And are you just looking to see them move pain-free, or are you trying to build some offensive momentum
07:00down there?
07:01Yeah, it's both.
07:02I mean, you'd love to see them have success and get the reps.
07:05You cannot replicate major league competition.
07:08Even right now in the game, I think the biggest jump is from AAA to the big leagues because the
07:13quality of play,
07:15especially as a hitter adjusting to the pitching is so high.
07:18So anytime you go on rehab, you're not going to face major league quality competition.
07:22But what you are going to do is go through baseball activity and baseball movements.
07:26You're going to be on your feet for two and a half, three hours.
07:29You're going to be making baseball plays.
07:31You're going to be moving in ways that maybe we can't simulate in a controlled environment.
07:35So it's really important that these guys go and get these reps and the experience to hopefully pass all the
07:43tests
07:44so that when they are in a major league game, there's nothing that pops up that we haven't exposed them
07:48to.
07:49And that's kind of what they're doing.
07:50So the performance piece is one part of it.
07:52We would love to see them perform.
07:53But the reality is these guys are major league players.
07:56And if they don't get any hits on rehab, they're still very capable of jumping right in
08:01and performing at the big league level.
08:03But when you haven't seen competition in weeks, for Wyatt, it's been over a month.
08:09For Corey, it's been approaching three weeks now.
08:13It's good to get them real live reps in game situations.
08:16Have you seen some growth out of your lineup, though, without those guys in there?
08:19Seemed like the offense just creatively finding ways to score over the weekend.
08:24Yeah, and really, I love the way the offense went about it.
08:28I mean, the guys at the top did their job in terms of hitting the ball hard and some extra
08:32base hits.
08:33And then when we got to the bottom of the order, these guys created pressure on the other team
08:37by doing little things, putting the ball in play, walking, getting hit by pitch, bunting,
08:41and playing small ball to some extent.
08:44And, you know, the bottom of the order was driven kind of by on-base percentage.
08:48The top of the order, we saw Jock Slug.
08:50We saw Nimmo hit a big home run, J.J. homered, Durant slugging.
08:55So, you know, Berger can slug.
08:57It was a good balance.
08:59And so I think that's what we need is the bottom of the order to set the table for the
09:02top.
09:03The top did their job this weekend.
09:05It was really fun to see almost kind of a complete lineup without our two main guys.
09:10And when we get our two main guys back, it'll help everybody else
09:13because it'll put them in better spots in the lineup.
09:15And it'll be able to give us some flexibility with giving guys off days
09:20and not running them into the ground.
09:22And you saw that this weekend, Evan Carter needed a couple days off
09:26after getting hit in the foot by a pitch.
09:29And, you know, these guys have been pushing it.
09:31They're trying.
09:32They want to be out there.
09:33But they also need, you know, a day here and there.
09:35And so when we get Corey and Wyatt back, it'll give us a little more flexibility to do that.
09:40See, while you've talked to us a lot about your starting pitching setting the tone,
09:43they certainly did that over the weekend.
09:44They were brilliant.
09:45What did you think about the dominant pitching you got from your starters
09:48and then carrying that into Grom's outing tonight in St. Louis?
09:51Yeah, I mean, this is what good pitching staffs do is they feed off each other.
09:55And McKenzie Gore came out Friday night in a game that I'm not going to say was must win for
10:00us.
10:01But after the Houston series, we were all pretty down.
10:04And McKenzie came out and just basically put it on his shoulders
10:09and went through, I think it was seven shutout that night.
10:13And from there, the offense was able to breathe and get us a lead.
10:17And we won the game.
10:19And that was so huge.
10:20And then Kamar goes out and does the same thing.
10:23And then Jack follows that.
10:25And so they kind of feed off each other.
10:27And they're a close group.
10:28They love each other.
10:29They care about each other.
10:30And they root for each other.
10:31But they compete with each other as well because they want to uphold their end of the bargain.
10:36And so for Jacob, tonight's his night.
10:39My guess is that he's going to go out and want to do exactly what the three guys have done
10:42before him.
10:44And when you have that, that's how you can have a chance to have some win streaks.
10:48And with our rotation, I do feel like when these guys get on a roll,
10:52we should have a chance to win a good win streak seven, eight, nine games in a row at some
10:58point.
10:59Well, that would be nice, CY.
11:01I don't want to be an alarmist, but it does feel like maybe the Mariners are raising the bar
11:05on what it's going to take to contend in the division for the rest of the summer.
11:08What do you think?
11:09No doubt.
11:10There's no doubt.
11:11I would not by any means say that their start was characteristic of the team they are.
11:17We know that this is the team to be in the American League West.
11:23And we've got our work cut out for us in terms of keeping up with them.
11:27And we knew that coming in, but nothing changed.
11:30I would also say that we have not played our best baseball, in my opinion,
11:34that there's a better Texas Rangers team than what we've shown.
11:36And my expectation is we continue to improve and get better.
11:40And we'll see how this falls.
11:42But there's a lot of baseball left.
11:44There's a long season to go.
11:45And we've got to just continue to focus on us and play our best baseball.
11:49And if we do that, my hope is that by the end of the season,
11:52we'll be in a spot to compete with the Mariners and hopefully find a way to beat them.
11:57Well, thanks for joining us.
11:58And give them hell.
11:59We'll be pulling for you.
12:00Guys, I appreciate it.
