00:39Now, don't let RYSTAR's cartoony veneer fool you here. This game can be downright punishing at times,
00:45mostly because it doesn't really play like other platformers out there. RYSTAR uses his grabby hands
00:51and arms to lunge, dart, and weave around the various vibrant stages, but it's never easy to
00:57contend with, even if it is a lot of fun. This same move is used to quell baddies as well.
01:01This becomes
01:02especially tough at the back end of the game, where RYSTAR faces off against multiple heavyweight bosses
01:08that all put up quite the fight. TASMANIA
01:27TASMANIA's Game Gear outing is quite the conundrum, especially when it comes to how TAS controls.
01:32He's somehow both slow and lumbering, yet slippery and unwieldy. It's an
01:36odd combination that never really feels comfortable. Toss in the fact that each level
01:41sees TAS doing something completely new, such as riding in a minecart, flapping around the sky with
01:47makeshift wings, snowboarding down a slope on a stick, and more. It's cool, yes, that the game keeps
01:53things fresh, but my goodness, it's a doozy to deal with, TAS. Oh, and I mean, why does all of
01:59the
01:59games' music sound like an irritating discordant version of Morse code? Weird.
02:12SHINOBI
02:20Gosh, being a ninja is hard work. I mean, not that I would know, I'm not especially stealthy. You know,
02:26it doesn't matter, forget it. This game is just downright brutal from start to finish. While,
02:31yes, it's incredibly cool and useful to be able to swap up your ninja colors and styles on the fly,
02:37and heck, even turn into your own version of TAS from the previous entry, which is wild,
02:42these swaps do little to actually keep you from harm, as cool as they may seem. Enemies are relentless
02:48and aggressive. The small levels are often confusing to navigate. Platforming is tight and tricky,
02:54and the dastardly bosses aren't going to go easy on you at all.
03:05Alien 3
03:11The full name of this game really should be Alien 3, Vents, and Ladders. Kind of like, you know,
03:16chutes and ladders, but in this case, vents. Like the game, the board game, I'm old, never mind. Since
03:21you're actually going to spend a majority of your time playing this labyrinthian game, just clambering
03:26around vents and, yeah, climbing ladders. What fun. Yay. But hey, your mission is really quite simple,
03:32though. Blast Xenomorphs in the face and rescue as many prisoners as you can. Oh, and of course,
03:38if you didn't already guess, travel through vents and climb ladders. I keep saying it, but you do a lot
03:42of that in this game. It's just a confusing game all around. You never quite know where to go,
03:47and Xenomorphs seem to just spring up like a leaky boat,
03:50all while the hapless prisoners just wait around for you to save the day.
04:01The Adventures of Batman and Robin
04:11The small screen space of the Game Gear makes many games needlessly difficult, with this point being
04:17extremely evident in The Adventures of Batman and Robin. The zoomed in look here makes it so darn
04:23tough to figure out what's coming next, be it a nefarious goon or a platforming hazard. The character
04:28sprite is quite large overall, and ends up moving closer to the edge of the screen than you'd like,
04:33making incoming damage really easy to receive here. With the confounding level layouts and plentiful
04:39hazards and obstacles to trip you up, it's quite clear indeed that Batman and Robin need to take
04:45each step carefully if they hope to survive.
04:55Power Strike 2
05:03It probably shouldn't come as any surprise to see a shmup game here, since by their very nature,
05:09as arcade-style games with intense action, they constantly challenge you, the player. Instead of
05:15bucking the tough-as-nails shmup gameplay experience for a handheld, Power Strike 2 fully leans into it,
05:22thrusting you into a frenetic and brutal sci-fi affair. You have very little room for error in this game,
05:28especially when it comes to the screen-filling boss battles. Fortunately indeed, your ship's firepower is outstanding,
05:34but you will still need to get comfortable with constantly darting around the screen while firing
05:39off blasts of your own if you hope to survive the onslaught.
05:49Ninja Gaiden
05:57Our second Ninja Fueled journey on this list, Ninja Gaiden is a stone cold classic. Unbelievably
06:02punishing? Absolutely. But undeniably a true banger. This game is meant to be difficult, forcing you to
06:09memorize every level and boss battle. Enemies can quite literally just spring up out of nowhere, which
06:14means that you have to constantly be on guard if you want to slay them first. And while the game
06:20overall platforming sections are quite simple and light, the final stage's pillar-hopping platforming
06:26is just nightmarish through and through, culminating in a harrowing final boss fight that isn't at all
06:32for the faint of heart. Chakan the Forever Man
06:49I think a more appropriate name for this game should actually be Chakan the I barely started the game
06:55and just died in the opening parts of the first level man. But obviously I can see why they didn't
07:00go with that specific title, it just, you know, doesn't quite roll off the tongue as well. Seriously
07:05though, Chakan is a downright brutal and creepy experience. This mostly comes down to Chakan's large,
07:11character sprite in tandem with the camera moving awkwardly when he jumps, making it super challenging
07:17to navigate around the many platforming scenarios, especially when baddies are attempting to send
07:22you to your early grave. The game feels and plays like some sort of labyrinthian nightmare that you
07:27just want to wake up from sooner, of course, rather than later.
07:38Battle Toads
07:45Of course, Battle Toads had to be here. I mean, it's freaking Battle Toads, right?
07:50No matter the platform that you play this game on, it's always an incredibly challenging game.
07:54This time, here on the Game Gear, it's even more difficult because of the small screen real estate
07:59that we've already mentioned for other games, giving you way less room for error overall.
08:04Heck, even if the infamous Turbo Tunnels level wasn't in this game, and yes, it's even harder
08:09here on the Game Gear, surprise, surprise, the game would still be considered one of the hardest
08:13on the handheld. The platforming is next level, requiring perfect timing, baddies take tons of
08:19hits before going down, and the staggering amount of surprise obstacles and hazards thrown at you is
08:24relentless. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
08:33You know what? I'm still haunted by this game to this very day. As one of those oddball kids in
08:47the
08:47neighborhood back in the day who got a Game Gear instead of a Game Boy, well, let me tell you,
08:51it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that scarred me the most, and still does. Not VR Troopers,
08:57not Power Rangers, not even the fully puzzle-focused Mickey's Ultimate Challenge, but gosh darn Sonic
09:04the Hedgehog 2. And no, this isn't the same Sonic 2 on the Genesis slash Mega Drive, it's a heck
09:09of a lot
09:09harder. Perhaps it's the game's extra fast speed, which, I mean, yeah, I guess it isn't a surprise,
09:14given Sonic. Perhaps it's the tiny screen mixed with Sonic's blazing speed. Perhaps it's the nefariously
09:21designed levels that just seemed like they were made to be cruel, forcing you to throw your Game
09:25Gear at the wall. Either way, yes, this game is easily one of the toughest on the Game Gear, good
09:31golly.
