00:09Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're counting down our picks for the 20 worst Sega Genesis games.
00:16Now, it's worth mentioning that most of these games on this list happen to also be quite challenging and difficult,
00:22mostly because they simply just don't play all that well in general.
00:32Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to
00:37be notified about our latest videos.
00:42Balls 3D Balls 3D is a fighting title that features wonky combatants constructed from animated spheres,
00:54giving matches a distinctive visual style uncommon for its time, even if the game leaves a lot to be desired.
01:01Many Genesis fans regard the game as unusually difficult and kind of broken because of its slippery movement and awkward
01:08hit detection,
01:09making attacks feel unpredictable during close range encounters.
01:13AI rivals also react with really sharp precision, leaving little opportunity for mistakes once the later stages are reached, if
01:20of course you can actually reach them.
01:21The unusual visual presentation here can further complicate battles,
01:26since overlapping character models often obscure animations and spacing cues are needed for accurate timing.
01:32Combined with limited responsiveness and a frustrating learning curve,
01:36and honestly it's pretty easy to see why this one isn't really all that fun to play.
01:46Superman.
01:54This action platformer places players in control of the iconic comic book superhero,
02:00as he battles enemies threatening Metropolis.
02:02No surprise there.
02:03The game earned its bad game reputation because many stages demand extremely precise flying controls,
02:10while hazards appear with little to no warning, making for an overall unpolished feel.
02:15Objectives are often unclear, forcing players to wander through maze-like areas under really strict time pressure,
02:21that quickly drains health and resources.
02:24Enemy attacks arrive relentlessly, and recovering from mistakes can feel nearly impossible once all your momentum is lost, which is
02:31easy to do.
02:31Along with awkward navigation and some poor level design,
02:35these mechanics create an experience that many retro fans remember as exhausting to complete.
02:40Still, not as bad as Superman 64 though, just saying.
02:50Stormlord.
02:56A fantasy-themed side-scrolling adventure in which a mystical warrior travels through dangerous realms to rescue captured fairies from
03:04dark forces could be fun, right?
03:07Well, no, sadly not here, unfortunately.
03:09It's severe challenge largely comes from stages packed to the gills with many hidden traps, aggressive creatures, and environmental dangers
03:18that punish hesitation almost immediately.
03:20Not fun.
03:21Success requires careful memorization because hazards frequently emerge without warning,
03:26while jumps must be executed with exact positioning to avoid instant death.
03:30Power-ups and helpful items can be difficult to locate in the game, leaving poorly prepared players,
03:36most of us basically, vulnerable during the later sections.
03:40All of this and more leads Stormlord to being one of those just not that fun to play games.
03:51Virtual Bart.
03:59Virtual Bart is a Simpsons-inspired platform title based on the adventures of Bart Simpson, who would have guessed,
04:05featuring a collection of bizarre virtual reality scenarios drawn from the television series.
04:10While unique in premise for sure, frustration with the game often stems from its abrupt shifts between different gameplay styles,
04:18since each stage introduces entirely different mechanics that require rapid adaptation.
04:23Several sequences rely on split-second reactions, especially during obstacle-heavy segments where missing a single cue can instantly end
04:31a run, which is really frustrating.
04:33Controls occasionally feel stiff or imprecise, making difficult objectives even tougher when navigating the fast-moving hazards or even the
04:41airborne sections.
04:42Because progress depends on mastering numerous minigame concepts rather than just one consistent system,
04:48many players view the experience as surprisingly unforgiving and just tedious to play through.
04:59Chakan the Forever Man.
05:08The dark and moody action platformer is widely remembered for its brutal endurance test,
05:14as lengthy stages offer few chances for recovery after taking damage.
05:18If you can actually figure out just where the heck you're going, it's not easy.
05:22Resource management plays a major role because players must conserve magic abilities and supplies while navigating hostile environments filled with
05:30deadly enemies that are straight out of your nightmares.
05:33Combat encounters demand patience and precision, particularly during boss fights that punish reckless attacks with devastating counterstrikes.
05:40Adding to the tension, and honestly the frustration, the absence of a save feature forces players to complete the entire
05:46quest in one single sitting,
05:49turning every single mistake you make into a costly setback.
05:52Ugh, no thank you.
06:00Fantasia.
06:07Fantasia adapts the classic animated film into a side-scrolling adventure,
06:12where Mickey Mouse journeys through magical worlds inspired by scenes from the movie.
06:16Despite the game's whimsy and its cartoony tone,
06:19confusing stage layouts frequently leave players unsure where to travel next,
06:23especially when switches, hidden paths, or obscure objectives block your progression.
06:28Not a fun combination at all if we're talking about it.
06:31Precise movement is essential because enemies and hazards are often positioned in ways that punish poorly timed jumps or even
06:37rushed decisions.
06:39Limited offensive options, combined with awkward controls and few opportunities to recover from errors,
06:44have caused many retro enthusiasts, myself included, and Mickey Mouse fans,
06:49to remember the experience as exceptionally unenjoyable.
06:52Who would have guessed?
06:58Last battle.
07:04This post-apocalyptic action title loosely inspired by martial arts anime,
07:09places you in control of a wandering fighter battling violent gangs across ruined landscapes.
07:15Many gamers consider the adventure a bit rough around the edges because hostile encounters become overwhelming without warning,
07:21especially when multiple attackers corner the character in confined spaces, making the game feel unbalanced.
07:28Navigation can also feel troublesome here due to unclear directions,
07:32which is kind of a common theme here on this list so far,
07:35and sprawling areas that force repeated backtracking over and over while resources steadily diminish.
07:40Stiff attacks, inconsistent collision detection, and more lead this one to being a bit of a mess to play.
07:53Batman Forever
07:54Batman Forever
07:55Batman Forever brings the superhero film to life, just barely, through a side-scrolling beat-em-up featuring Batman and
08:08Robin battling criminals throughout Gotham City.
08:10It's just sadly not all that fun to play despite the setup.
08:14Numerous players found the experience exceptionally frustrating and annoying because the complicated button combinations for even basic actions made combat
08:23unnecessarily cumbersome during hectic encounters.
08:26Stages frequently stretch on with relentless waves of opponents that quickly get annoying rather than exciting, forcing careful endurance while
08:34avoiding traps, projectiles, and even environmental threats galore.
08:38Progress can also become frustratingly obscure since certain puzzles and objectives provide little to no guidance,
08:45leaving newcomers vulnerable to repeated failures before discovering, hopefully, the correct solution.
08:58Super High Impact
08:59A high-energy sports game should, we think, make for a fun game on the Genesis, but definitely not super
09:05high impact, not at all.
09:07This arcade-style football release emphasizes fast action, exaggerated hits, and high-scoring competition rather than strict simulation, which is
09:16of course all fine and good, if it was actually fun to play.
09:18The game can feel remarkably brutal to play because opposing teams react with aggressive speed, making defensive stops and successful
09:26drives difficult to maintain consistently.
09:29Tight play clocks and frequent turnovers place constant pressure on decision making, especially when risky passes are intercepted by seemingly
09:37unstoppable defenders.
09:38Victory often depends on mastering precise timing for plays and execution, causing many players to struggle against the computer, all
09:46culminating in a less-than-optimal sports game on the console.
09:54The kick is up, and it's good!
09:59Lethal Enforcers
10:06Unlike many console shooters of its era, which, to be fair, was a pretty niche market, Lethal Enforcers focuses on
10:13arcade-style police action,
10:15where players eliminate criminals across robberies, hijackings, and other dangerous scenarios using a light gun or a controller.
10:23Split-second judgment becomes essential because enemies appear suddenly from windows, doorways, and crowded environments, often firing before players can
10:31actually react effectively.
10:33Innocent bystanders frequently and stupidly cross the screen during chaotic firefights, meaning a single careless shot can cost valuable progress
10:41or even resources.
10:41Ammunition limitations, rapid enemy assaults, and increasingly crowded and frustrating encounters combine to create a really hard game to recommend
10:50overall.
10:51Sword of Sodan
10:52Sword of Sodan is a fantasy hack and slash adventure where a barbarian duo fights through a cursed realm to
10:58defeat an evil sorcerer and hopefully restore balance.
11:01The game is notorious, largely because enemies deal heavy damage in very few hits, forcing cautious movement and near-perfect
11:09spacing during every single encounter, which can quickly grow tedious.
11:13Attack animations feel slow and commitment heavy, which makes it pretty easy for foes to interrupt strikes and overwhelm the
11:19player in groups, never a fun thing in our book.
11:21Limited responsiveness combined with sparse checkpoints means even small mistakes often result in restarting long stretches of progress.
11:30Amplifying the overall sense of battling the game itself throughout the journey, despite the game's fantastical and pretty cool magical
11:36themes.
11:37Fatal Labyrinth
11:45This one is really unique because it's a super duper early example of a sort of pseudo roguelike game, for
11:52better or worse, leaning more towards worse here.
11:55In Fatal Labyrinth, a lone adventurer descends a shifting fortress to recover a sacred chalice while surviving ever-changing floors.
12:03Difficulty spikes sharply because layouts are randomly generated, given the whole roguelite thing, leaving players unable to rely on memorized
12:11routes or safe paths through the maze-like structure.
12:14Resource scarcity plays a major role in this game, as things like food, weapons, and even healing items are limited,
12:20and mismanagement can quickly, and we do mean quickly, lead to starvation or defeat.
12:32Combat also carries risks due to turn-based encounters that punish poor positioning and some unlucky enemy placement.
12:39So, I mean, with all this in mind, it's honestly kinda easy to see why this one just feels unbalanced
12:44and often unfun to play.
12:45Out of this world. Gosh, this game is a real doozy. Its reputation comes from an almost complete absence of
12:52any guidance, leaving players to interpret hazards and solutions purely through experimentation.
12:57That, of course, equals less fun for the player.
13:01Out of this world is a cinematic science fiction adventure, where a young scientist is transported to an alien planet
13:07and must survive a hostile, unfamiliar environment through trial and error.
13:17Many sequences rely on precise timing and hidden logic, so a single missed time input can instantly undo significant progress.
13:25Frequent instant death outcomes, combined with lots of cryptic puzzle design, create a demanding experience where patience and repetition are
13:33essential for advancement.
13:34As you can probably see, it's really no surprise many Genesis players noped out of this one back in the
13:3990s.
13:40Dark Castle.
13:48Dark Castle is a side-scrolling platform adventure, where a hero infiltrates a gothic fortress to confront the evil Black
13:55Knight and his monstrous minions.
13:57The challenge in this game is quickly heightened by highly finicky controls that make jumping, climbing, and attacking feel imprecise
14:04during critical moments.
14:05Enemies often appear in tight corridors with little room to maneuver, leading to quick damage accumulation if positioning is even
14:13slightly off, which is easy to do.
14:15Environmental hazards such as falling objects, slippery ledges, and instant failed traps further reduce margin for error, creating a steep
14:23and relentless difficulty curve throughout the journey.
14:26It's unlikely you'll even make it to the end of this game, and honestly, that's okay, since you really aren't
14:31missing all that much.
14:46This early wrestling title features popular superstars from the era competing in simplified one-on-one matches inside the squared
14:54circle.
14:54So far, so good, right? Well, no. Many players find it difficult and unenjoyable, because the grappling system relies on
15:02quick input timing that is not clearly communicated, making it pretty darn easy to lose control during clinches and intense
15:08bouts.
15:09Basically, just sort of flailing around like a complete goon. Opponents frequently counterattack with little warning, and can string together
15:16momentum shifts that are really hard to break once they begin dominating.
15:20Limited move variety and rigid animations further intensify the experience here, since recovering from mistakes often feels slow and punishing
15:29compared to the fast pace of the matches.
15:38Altered Beast. Yeah, yeah, this one is really kind of love it or hate it, right? It's a Genesis title
15:44that's just so darn polarizing. But I mean, let's be honest, it's not a very good game overall.
15:50You play as a resurrected warrior who rises from the grave to rescue Athena by battling mythical creatures across ancient
15:56realms.
15:57It's difficulty and frustration is often attributed to stiff movement and sluggish attacks, which would be great understatements that leave
16:05little room for recovery once enemies close in, which is all the freaking time, mind you.
16:10Adversaries tend to swarm in groups, and their unpredictable positioning can quickly overwhelm players who mistime a jump or a
16:17strike.
16:17While transformation power-ups provide temporary strength, reaching them consistently is always challenging, and losing momentum usually results in rapid
16:26defeat and restarting
16:27earlier sections. Yeah, not fun at all.
16:37The Immortal. We actually featured this very game on our hardest Genesis games list because it's notoriously brutal to get
16:44through.
16:44But as you can guess from this very list, it's also one of the worst Genesis games around since it
16:50essentially feels haphazardly cobbled together.
16:52This grim fantasy adventure in which a wizard searches a deadly underground labyrinth for his missing mentor confronts traps, puzzles,
17:01and hostile creatures in spades.
17:03The experience is widely regarded as punishing due to its extreme reliance on trial and error design, where many hazards
17:09kill instantly without clear warning.
17:11I mean, who doesn't love that, right? Not me.
17:20Navigation through the maze-like levels demands careful experimentation.
17:24Yet, any small missteps, which will happen all the time, often lead to irreversible setbacks or immediate failure.
17:30Limited guidance, combined with unfair combat encounters, and few recovery options for you, creates a sense of pressure that challenges
17:38persistence more than your reflexes.
17:56Now, for some odd reason, I actually have fond memories of this game, playing it way back in the day
18:01on our family's CRT television in the basement.
18:04Somehow, I guess, having a grand old time, at least that's what I remember.
18:08But, taking off those rose-tinted glasses, yeah, it's a pretty terrible experience, even with the pretty rocking Aerosmith music
18:15infused all throughout the game.
18:17Like lethal enforcers previously on this list, Revolution X falls into the most of those same pitfalls.
18:23Here, you battle a dystopian regime that has outlawed music and entertainment.
18:28That's so 90's, am I right?
18:29The challenge level is high because enemies appear rapidly from multiple directions, requiring constant target switching with very little reaction
18:37time.
18:38Projectile patterns often overlap in crowded scenes, making it easy to lose health quickly if accuracy slips even briefly.
18:45In addition to all this, no margin of error for missed shots and escalating enemy aggression creates a pressure-heavy
18:52experience that demands sharp focus throughout each stage.
19:01Rise of the Robots
19:03Our penultimate game on this worst games list has to be Rise of the Robots for many, many reasons.
19:08Rise of the Robots is a futuristic fighting game where advanced androids compete in one-on-one combat across industrial
19:16arenas while an artificial intelligence oversees the conflict.
19:25Many players view it as extremely wonky and often broken, because the opponent AI reads inputs with uncanny precision, punishing
19:33even small delays or predictable patterns from you.
19:36This essentially means you will rarely, if ever, win matches.
19:40Offensive options feel restricted and inconsistent, making it hard to mount sustained pressure or recover once momentum shifts away.
19:47Combined with sluggish responsiveness and unforgiving enemy behavior, matches often become one-sided struggles that require memorization rather than adaptation.
19:57Good times.
20:05Shack-Fu
20:13Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal was all the rage back in the 90s, so I guess it wasn't crazy to
20:18see him in a video game.
20:20Too bad Shack-Fu is not a fun game in the slightest, even for fans of the basketball star.
20:25Oh, and in case you didn't realize yet, no, this is not a basketball game for some reason.
20:30It's actually a fighting game where Shaq becomes entangled in a mystical journey through an alternate dimension filled with supernatural
20:36combatants, obviously.
20:38The game is often criticized because enemy fighters chain together aggressive combos that leave little room for recovery once the
20:45pressure begins.
20:46Movement and attack inputs can feel imprecise, making it hard to reliably execute intended techniques during those fast exchanges.
20:54Progression also suffers from uneven balance, as certain opponents spike sharply in strength, forcing repeated attempts to overcome the sudden
21:02shifts in challenge.
21:03Not fun.
21:04This game is certainly no slam dunk, but honestly, more like an air ball.
21:08Yeah, that's all the basketball puns my brain can conjure up, I think.
21:12You're welcome.
