00:07Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at 20 of the most difficult Sega Classics ever made.
00:24Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long.
00:27So be sure to subscribe to MojoPlays, and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:34Vectorman 2
00:42As far as graphics and sound go, the Vectorman games are some of the coolest Sega Classics you could ever
00:48jump into.
00:49Vectorman 2, however, might be a bit migraine-inducing for some players.
00:54Not only are there a lot of dark areas where you can't really tell where you're going,
00:59but the camera is zoomed in just a bit too much to where the screen feels kinda cramped.
01:04You kind of have to play this game a bit slower than you would probably like.
01:08Some of the later levels will also require you to take leaps of faith a bit more,
01:12and become somewhat labyrinthian in their design.
01:15So, be patient, and just enjoy the ride as long as you can.
01:27Afterburner 2
01:33If you're the type to get easily disoriented, then you may want to stay away from flight simulation games,
01:39especially a game like Afterburner 2.
01:43Afterburner 2 is simple in design.
01:45Just fly around, lock onto enemies, and fire away while taking care to not crash your plane.
01:50The problem is that the camera turns as you turn, and it turns as fast as your plane does.
01:56This can quickly become a bewildering experience for some players,
01:59once you start flying past your target's exploding remains.
02:03It's a fun game, but Afterburner 2 is definitely not for the faint of heart.
02:07Or those who are easily overwhelmed by visuals.
02:20ToeJam & Earl
02:22To get good at ToeJam & Earl requires multiple playthroughs,
02:32and trust us, your first few may be troublesome, to put it gently.
02:35The game has long been known for its surreal visuals and design, but it's part of the charm.
02:41But those unfamiliar may struggle as some enemies aren't the usual suspects you would see as enemies in other video
02:47games.
02:48Whereas some will try to directly harm the duo,
02:51others will impede the duo's navigation and can send them falling down to previously explored areas.
02:56Seriously, this is one of those few instances where you actually want to avoid ice cream trucks.
03:08Streets of Rage 2
03:15Those who think every beat em up plays the same as the rest have not played Streets of Rage 2.
03:21This title has been known to be among the hardest beat em ups you can play,
03:24but mostly if you're playing on the Mania difficulty.
03:27Under this mode, enemies get way faster and attack way more aggressively.
03:32This combined with the fact that you can accidentally hurt other players,
03:35can make the game way tougher than one might expect.
03:38That said, try to make sure you aren't getting too caught up in the action.
03:52Space Harrier 2
04:02As we've seen with the previous entries, many of these games are tough by design.
04:06Space Harrier 2, on the other hand, may not have been difficult intentionally.
04:11At least we aren't sure if it was.
04:13This game has not aged all that well, as its performance tanks the second enemies start flying in from off
04:19screen.
04:20The drop in frame rate can make it really hard to be precise with your shots,
04:23which may lead you to constantly adjusting and readjusting your position.
04:28Space Harrier 2 is a really cool game, don't get it twisted,
04:32but if it ran better, it'd be way more exhilarating than frustrating.
04:44Sonic the Hedgehog
04:53It's become a lot harder to justify playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog as time marches forward.
04:59Yes, the visuals are fantastic, the music still slaps, and the environments are creatively vibrant.
05:05The problem is that this is a game that encourages you to get through every level as fast as possible,
05:12while also wanting to throw in cheap shots, pitfalls, and whatever else could rob you of rings and lives.
05:19It ultimately forces you to play the game at a significantly slower pace,
05:23and even then, Sonic the Hedgehog will try to throw some nonsense at you.
05:27Way to go against your own philosophy, guys.
05:37Ristar
05:44Don't let the cutesy appearance fool you.
05:47Ristar is indeed among the hardest games Sega has ever put out into the world.
05:51The entire game revolves around grabbing. Grab poles to launch off of,
05:55grab enemies to body check them, grab trees to get over spikes,
05:59all of it requiring precise timing and reaction.
06:03Fail to grab something in time, and you will likely wind up losing a life.
06:07It is one of those games that will make or break you, but power on through,
06:11and you will find that Ristar is one of the coolest games in Sega's ancient catalog.
06:21Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
06:35While we're still talking about charming and cute games, we want to bring up good old Billy Hatcher.
06:40This kid had one of the coolest GameCube games ever made for the platform.
06:45Admittedly though, it wasn't the most well polished.
06:47In addition to the expectedly abysmal camera controls that most 3D platformers succumb to,
06:53the controls tied to rolling eggs around weren't super responsive either.
06:58It isn't oppressive by any means, but it definitely takes some time to get used to how each egg controls.
07:04So, try not to let a few falls or several falls discourage you from trying again.
07:13Good morning!
07:17Kid Chameleon
07:27Look, if you don't like games that go on for way too long, then Kid Chameleon is not for you.
07:34This game goes on for more than 100 levels, and the difficulty fluctuates at an absurd rate.
07:40Some levels won't be too bad, but others will make you want to tear your hair out.
07:45What's worse is that you can't just stop and come back to where you left off later.
07:49Kid Chameleon has no save system of any kind, not even a password system.
07:55So, you either beat it in a single sitting, or go find a port of the game that supports save
08:01states.
08:01You know, like the version on Switch Online.
08:04Either way, good luck! Your mental fortitude will be tested here.
08:13Golden Axe 3
08:22Out of all of the Golden Axe games, Golden Axe 3 is the absolute best of the bunch,
08:27with its gorgeous visuals and the ways it adds to the previous game's combat mechanics.
08:32It is also the hardest between all three of the original games.
08:35The main reason for this is because enemies can block whenever they damn well feel like it,
08:40and there's not really much you can do to counter it or break their block.
08:43You basically have to go all out on an enemy before they can get up or know when it's time
08:48to focus on another foe for a bit.
08:50Still, super fun game. Golden Axe is underrated, man.
08:58Chakan, the forever man.
09:01The forever man.
09:11Chakan has no means of saving your progress, but that isn't enough to put you through the ringer.
09:16Chakan is one of those typical platformers that loves putting in jumps requiring perfect precision,
09:23while bringing progress to a screeching halt with absurd enemy spawns.
09:27Eventually, it gets to a point where you sit and wonder why the game is trying to make the experience
09:33so miserable.
09:35God help you if you lose a life, because chances are you will lose a ton of progress thanks to
09:41the awful checkpoint system.
09:47Burning Rangers Go!
09:50Now you'll learn how to put out fires. Use your pulse laser by pressing the action button.
09:56Here, I'll show you how.
09:58Burning Rangers is one of those cult classics that's in a similar situation as Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.
10:04Some folks have nostalgia for it because of the visuals, the sound, the general tone, and that kickass theme song,
10:11man.
10:11But once you actually play it, your feelings of nostalgia may feel unjustified.
10:17Burning Rangers is known to be difficult for its archaic camera controls.
10:21Some players may not be super keen on the game's reliance on voice navigation.
10:25And because of your limited oxygen and lack of a minimap, you need to listen closely to figure out where
10:30you need to go next and get there fast.
10:32This can also be difficult on account of fires exploding and spreading everywhere.
10:38Hope you aren't hard of hearing like I am.
10:47Shadow Dancer, The Secret of Shinobi.
11:00Hey, it took us long enough to get a Shinobi game in here, right?
11:03Indeed, you can pick just about any Shinobi game, and it'd be worthy of being on this list.
11:08But Shadow Dancer stands out because of one thing, and one thing only.
11:13Everything insta-kills.
11:15Anything and everything you see on screen in Shadow Dancer can kill you in a single blow.
11:21And enemies are placed in some really inconvenient spots from the moment you press start.
11:26So, if you think you can handle a game that demands total perfection, have at it.
11:45The funny thing about most of the games we've featured on this list is that most of them are excellent
11:50at best, solid at worst.
11:52Altered Beast is the run to the litter here, because, let's be honest, this game sucks.
11:58The stiff controls make it super awkward to move around and attack, and they do not accommodate the player encountering
12:04the much faster enemies.
12:05It's a game built entirely around punishing the player in some truly absurd ways.
12:11Really, just go play any of the other games we've talked about.
12:14You'll have a much better time with those.
12:21Comics Zone
12:29If there is one word we could use to describe why Comics Zone is a difficult game, it's claustrophobic.
12:36Yes, the use of different comic panels makes for really cool aesthetic and can lead to some interesting level design.
12:41But, it often feels like you have less room to anticipate enemies from charging in off screen.
12:47If you're somebody who's played a bunch of beat em ups and action platformers, you may not struggle as much
12:51as other players might.
12:58Super Monkey Ball
13:05On the surface, it seems like Super Monkey Ball would have you controlling Ai Ai just as most other video
13:10games would, right?
13:11Well, that's where the unique gimmick comes in and completely turns things around.
13:16You weren't controlling the monkey in the ball, you're controlling the stage and which direction it tilts in.
13:22From there, Super Monkey Ball becomes a constant grapple with physics as your tilts will determine how fast Ai Ai
13:29goes.
13:30And yes, every stage gets worse in gimmicks, layout, and geometry.
13:35Remember the old phrase, patience is a virtue.
13:45Echo the Dolphin
13:53Sega are a bunch of deceitful jerkwads for putting out a game with a happy little dolphin on the cover.
13:58Echo the Dolphin is not as innocent as it may seem.
14:01This game can be one of the most aggravating gaming experiences in your life.
14:06Every level is designed in such a weird, maze-like way that it becomes incredibly easy to get lost in.
14:12Not only that, but there are tons of enemies and obstacles that can kill you in a single hit.
14:18What is this, Silver Surfer for the NES?
14:20Of course, once you realize this game was made during the golden age of Blockbuster and Hollywood video,
14:27then you understand why the game was made so obscenely difficult.
14:30It was just to keep us all from beating the game in a single night.
14:40Virtua Fighter 2
14:48Even if you have never played Virtua Fighter 2, trust us when we say that you have played Virtua Fighter
14:552.
14:56We're not saying that because there isn't anything special about the game, far from it.
15:00It's just that, the way the game makes fights difficult is nothing different compared to any other fighting game we've
15:05played.
15:06It's your classic case of BS input reading and inhuman reactions to even the quickest attacks that should land a
15:13guaranteed hit.
15:15It winds up making Tekken's bosses seem way more fair at times, especially when you fight Dural.
15:20Dural sucks.
15:29Alex Kidd in Miracle World
15:40Just as they did with Echo the Dolphin, Sega wants you to believe this is just a cute little 2D
15:45platformer
15:46about a little boy setting out to save his kingdom from destruction.
15:49Woohoo!
15:50They even throw in Rock Paper Scissors minigames.
15:53Seems innocent enough, right?
15:55But once you've gone through the first level, Alex Kidd in Miracle World seems like it's just out to get
16:01you.
16:02Controlling Alex himself is infuriating with his slippery movement,
16:05floaty jumps, and pathetic little one pixel punches.
16:10On top of that, you have all sorts of hazards being thrown at you from off screen,
16:15beneath blocks, and just about everywhere!
16:18Do yourself a favor and just go play the remake.
16:22It is way more accessible and way more fun.
16:30And lastly, The Revenge of Shinobi.
16:42Yeah, not super surprising ending the list with yet another Shinobi game, right?
16:46The Revenge of Shinobi has been known to be so difficult,
16:50it has caused some fans to question whether they genuinely like the series,
16:54or if they only just like one or two of the games specifically.
16:57Each difficulty cranks up the number of enemies more and more
17:01to where you'll feel like you're making very little progress, if any at all.
17:05Couple that with the usual limited resources that allow you to execute more powerful moves,
17:10and you'll be turning the game off within minutes.
17:12I want to love this game, man, but it doesn't want me to love it.
17:24What's the toughest Sega game you've ever played?
