00:03Hmm? You should really leave this place.
00:06Battle 1. Fight!
00:09Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at the 10 best fighting games to ever grace handheld
00:15consoles.
00:23You win!
00:25Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays, and ring
00:30the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:34Sonic Battle
00:44With the only other Sonic fighting game being the often forgotten Sonic the Fighters, it was interesting to see how
00:50a Sonic fighting game would work on the GBA.
00:52Well, it truly is one of the coolest fighting games the GBA had ever seen.
00:58The controls were super responsive, and every character boasted enough depth between their normals and special abilities to make them
01:05feel distinct from one another.
01:07On the technical side, it was astonishing to see the GBA replicate 3D graphics for its arenas.
01:13Admittedly, the levels themselves weren't super interesting, but even so, there was quite a lot to love here between the
01:19combat, the technical prowess, and, of course, the fights against friends.
01:34I will make you suffer!
01:37I love these do-or-die situations!
01:39Look, we can easily summarize this entry by saying, ah, it's good ol' Soul Calibur squeezed onto the PSP, and
01:46just call it a day.
01:47Not only that, it's good ol' Soul Calibur with Kratos as the token guest fighter.
01:52But really, that's kind of all we needed.
01:55Even with the noticeable absence of a proper story mode, Broken Destiny was honestly a pretty good entry point for
02:01newer players, as much of the offline focus was on training and mastering the different playstyles.
02:07We'll admit that this entry could have given us a few more goodies, but overall, we were ready to throw
02:12down with our friends on smaller screens.
02:15Tekken Advance
02:21On the surface, Tekken should not work on a limited console like the Game Boy Advance.
02:25This is a game built on four buttons assigned to each limb, and requires complex inputs to execute devastating moves.
02:33However, Tekken Advance found a way to simplify the controls, yet still maintain a level of input required to pull
02:39off special moves.
02:40On top of that, the game still managed to include sidestepping, a key mechanic of the franchise, and it still
02:47ran and played as well as the home console and arcade games.
02:51Honestly, developer Aiding did a tremendous job with this micro-sized installment, so much that we hope to see it
02:58make its way to Switch Online's GBA catalog sometime in the future.
03:03Please, Nintendo?
03:07You win!
03:08You win!
03:09Fight Night Round 3
03:16Sports games never really had a presence in the handheld gaming market unless one was catering to the arcade-y
03:22side of the market , or if Mario wedged his way in to get another sports title.
03:26But, Fight Night Round 3 was the premiere boxing game that every PSP owner wanted.
03:32While it didn't look as pretty as the 360 and PS3 versions, it still played well and even boasted a
03:39career mode that was more feature-rich, with customization options, cutman contracts, and the like.
03:45You could even play historical boxing matches via rival challenges and really appreciate the athletes that made the sport so
03:52respectable.
03:54That said, in some ways, the PSP version might have been the best version out of them all. Just saying.
04:01He showed great ring generalship and control over his punches. Well done.
04:06Dragon Ball Z – Supersonic Warriors
04:17Obviously, no Dragon Ball game is ever going to feel as fast and fluid on something like a Game Boy
04:23Advance compared to a PS2 or even a GameCube.
04:26Even so, Supersonic Warriors did manage to make do with the limitations and still matched the look and feel of
04:33the anime in scope.
04:34The way the camera zoomed in and out and the parallax scrolling was programmed made it feel like the battlefield
04:39was way bigger than it actually was.
04:42On top of that, your fight still had awesome moments like kicking your opponent into a pillar of stone so
04:49hard that it causes the pillar to turn into rubble.
04:51Not bad for a pocket-sized brawler if you ask us.
05:00Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy
05:09Now, the original Dissidia Final Fantasy is still an amazing spinoff to go back and play.
05:14However, we're choosing Duodecim over its predecessor because of how it evolved the formula.
05:20For starters, you have more intricate mechanics to learn between the newly fleshed out assists and EX moves.
05:26But the biggest addition here was the new single player mode that integrated elements of Final Fantasy's exploration with the
05:33more fighting game focused combat.
05:35Build your dream party made of various Final Fantasy protagonists and set forth on a journey to kill chaos.
05:42But whether you were in this for the multiplayer or for the epic single player,
05:46Dissidia Duodecim has long been known to be the best in this short-lived series.
05:51If only Square would port these games forward already, you know?
05:55But still stuck with Dissidia NT for some reason.
05:59Dual Blades
06:00First battle
06:02Ready
06:02Go
06:03If you've been watching our videos for a while,
06:10you might have noticed we've shilled for this game a number of times before.
06:14But for those who may not be in the know,
06:16Dual Blades was one of the nine GBA games that ever got an M rating.
06:20And unlike the other eight M-rated GBA games,
06:24this one was honestly excellent in just about every aspect.
06:27In addition to boasting a diverse roster of characters with varying play styles,
06:32the controls and animations have made it to where the game hasn't aged a day.
06:36Sure, the viscera on display is far from what some would call graphic with its red sharpie marker effects,
06:43but regardless,
06:44Dual Blades is the most impressive fighting game we had ever seen on GBA.
06:48And that's quite the accomplishment considering this game was made by a college student in Turkey at the time.
06:54Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS
07:03We are very well aware that Smash 4 has become the new brawl in recent years with the bizarre split
07:09in content and the whole fiasco with Bayonetta breaking the game at the very end, you get the idea.
07:15Despite all of that though, the 3DS version of Smash 4 is still a blast to go back and play
07:21every once in a while.
07:22It honestly doesn't feel much different to play than the home console versions aside from being on a significantly smaller
07:29screen.
07:30But with modes like Smash Run and the way Classic Mode sported a build your own path structure,
07:35there is quite a lot to love about this iteration more than some may let on.
07:39If only the 3DS didn't have such a fragile circle pad for some of us.
07:43Yeah, a lot of broken 3DS's back then.
07:52Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection
07:55The initial version of Tekken 5 was already remarkable with its detailed visuals and wealth of different game modes.
08:01So how is it that Dark Resurrection, the PSP iteration, turned out to be so much better?
08:08Well, by simply beefing up the size of the game.
08:11In addition to featuring a few more characters, Dark Resurrection allowed players to take on ghosts of other players to
08:18fight against,
08:19emulating online play while also allowing us to take on arcade players from other corners of the globe.
08:24Then there was the extra side games that Tekken 5 didn't receive initially.
08:28Oh, the hours we wasted on Command Attack and Tekken Bowling.
08:33Especially Tekken Bowling.
08:34The only reason we aren't considering it the best handheld fighting game ever is because of the PSP's D-pad
08:40not always being the most reliable when it comes to executing specific inputs.
08:45Needing a special attachment to play a game properly is just never fun.
08:56Dead or Alive Dimensions
09:05Dead or Alive Dimensions is absolutely the best fighting game we have ever played on a handheld console.
09:14It was quite astonishing to see Koei Tecmo execute this game so flawlessly while other notable fighting game franchises were
09:22floundering in getting just their ports to work on 3DS.
09:26As Street Fighter and Tekken struggled in performance, Dimensions ran at 60 frames per second on 3DS when 3D was
09:33turned off.
09:34When it was left on, Dimensions ran at a lower frame rate, but that frame rate was still consistent through
09:40and through.
09:41Even new players could get in on the action and learn the mechanics by executing moves just by tapping on
09:47what they wanted to use on the touch screen.
09:50It was such a beautiful marriage between hardcore and casual fighting game players and a huge celebration of the might
09:57and majesty of Dead or Alive.
09:59Tell us, what's the best fighting game you've played on a handheld? Did it make our list?
10:04I'm not kidding when I say Dead or Alive Dimensions is the best handheld fighting game I've ever played.
10:09But let us know what you think down in the comments and be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays for
10:14more great videos every day.
