00:00All right. Well, speaking of creativity, I thought maybe the Browns were going to get creative in pursuing a quarterback
00:06that could have very well been in the first round in next year's loaded NFL draft by way of the
00:13supplemental draft.
00:15If you've followed the story of Brendan Sorsby, who is potentially going to be in the supplemental draft because he
00:22is out of the NCAA and Texas Tech because of a big time gambling scandal.
00:28In fact, news coming down yesterday that and this is the New York Times that he's under investigation by Ohio
00:37State gambling officials.
00:39The Ohio Casino Control Commission confirmed to The Athletic and the New York Times on Thursday.
00:45So, you know, people are already jumping to conclusions.
00:48Does this mean he was on the take?
00:51If you look at the last also last year, the last four or five games, he was pretty bad after
00:57getting off to a sensational start.
00:59I think you got to clarify that under the I know it's it just sounded like you're making it sound
01:03like it was Ohio State.
01:04Yeah, the Ohio State.
01:05The Ohio State gambling commission.
01:07Yeah, that is what that office is because he played at Cincinnati.
01:09That's why. OK, that's why I think he played at Cincinnati.
01:12So Peter Schrager says you guys should probably stop talking about it in Cleveland at all based on what he
01:17had to say yesterday on ESPN.
01:19There will be interest in him in the supplemental draft.
01:22We don't see the supplemental draft utilized too often, especially for a quarterback.
01:25There will be interest as far as the Browns go.
01:27I would take the meme of the dog with the laser, just like looking at Browns fans.
01:31Anytime a quarterback can even throw a ball, that's how they act as far as it is.
01:35I'm told Browns right now, Sorsby's name has not been in the conversation.
01:39Rather, they're focused on what they have in house at the moment.
01:42And that is a Deshaun Watson revival.
01:43That is a Shador Sanders.
01:45Can you do it again?
01:46Can you get back on the field and can you win this job?
01:48And they are so ecstatic about their draft that they had this past last couple of weeks that the Browns
01:53like,
01:53I don't know if Sorsby being dropped into it is an actual legitimate thing right now.
01:58We'll see.
01:58To Tone Diggs' point, the NFL is going to have a say in this as well.
02:01But a fascinating, unprecedented topic now in the NIL era, especially in this whole gambling, pro gambling world that we
02:07live in.
02:07Yeah, he could also enter the league suspended.
02:10We are going over some of those examples.
02:12Think about this.
02:12Yesterday.
02:13Jim Trestle was suspended.
02:14I brought that up.
02:15You know, as a video coordinator for the Colts.
02:19So, can you, can the Browns just please stay away from this?
02:22Can we just move forward?
02:24And if you're going to draft a quarterback next year, just do that instead.
02:28I'm so tired of having drama around the quarterback position.
02:32I mean, you want, what do you want?
02:34Johnny Manziel.
02:35Drama.
02:35Right?
02:36Baker Mayfield became drama at the end.
02:39Deshaun Watson.
02:40How many lawsuits do we have to look at before he can actually play, be suspended?
02:43And then last year, not drafting one quarterback, but drafting two quarterbacks.
02:49So, even if we had everything going for him, you're going to bring him in there now, and
02:54you're going to be looking at three, four quarterbacks, all with less than a year's experience, if you
03:00were going to do that.
03:01First of all, I don't think the league is going to allow him to even be in the supplemental
03:05draft if he's under investigation.
03:07Yeah, that is the question.
03:08And it's very unclear.
03:09He's not going to let it.
03:10So, that's why I think this story is almost borderline ridiculous, and I'm just praying
03:15that the Browns stay out of the drama game.
03:17And by the way, Jeff, we were talking about how good is Sorsby anyway.
03:22He was ranked 10th on some list that he was talking about.
03:25Now listen, Texas Tech was going to give him $5 million.
03:28He's going to be one of the highest paid players in all of college football.
03:30So, they obviously scouted him and thought he was pretty good.
03:33Yeah, but what does that make him as far as an NFL prospect?
03:36That's the other question.
03:37He was, I've heard some people say, had he had been in the draft this year, he might
03:41have been late second.
03:44But we know how the inflation works with quarterbacks.
03:46Like, if they talk about you as a late second pick, you're on the fringes of being a first
03:51round pick.
03:51And that's this year.
03:53What would he have been next year on a team that's supposed to be pretty loaded at Texas
03:57Tech, a very expensive team?
03:58Can we just avoid the drama?
04:00Can we please?
04:01So, a couple things here.
04:02Peter Schrager saying he's told, he has been told, that this is a non-factor with the Browns.
04:09Do you know how the supplemental draft works?
04:11Yeah.
04:12The bidding process?
04:13Yeah, it's a bid.
04:14Right.
04:14And then it goes back to last year's draft.
04:16So, any of the teams that were ahead of us last year would have the opportunity.
04:20So, let's say we put in a bid and, I don't know, name a random team.
04:26Vegas.
04:26Vegas.
04:27Jets.
04:28Giants.
04:28Any one of them.
04:29If we said he's a seventh rounder and we're willing to bid our seventh rounder for next
04:33year's draft, if any one of those six teams ahead of us, or five teams ahead of us, put
04:37him in, they would get him.
04:39So, I don't want to sound crazy here, but given that that is the process for this, wouldn't
04:46you want to leak out that you have no, if you did want him, wouldn't you want to leak
04:50out that you have no interest whatsoever because you don't want to overbid any higher than you
04:56have to, and you don't want other teams to know that you're interested, wouldn't it behoove
05:01you to say, I have no interest in this guy whatsoever?
05:05And then when it's time to put a bid in, try to steal him at a round that would be
05:10an
05:10incredible value judgment.
05:12For what?
05:13Because you have a chance to get somebody who could very well be in the first round next
05:17year.
05:17Come on.
05:18He's not selling jerseys.
05:20There's no reason to do it.
05:22Can you hang tight here?
05:24It's not an option either.
05:26It's a bid.
05:28One chance at it.
05:29You don't get to go, I'm a third.
05:31Well, I'm a second.
05:31Now I'm a first.
05:33No, but what I mean is if other teams didn't think the Browns were a threat, that they may
05:39low ball on the round.
05:41They might say third round because we don't think the competition is there.
05:45And you think you're missing out if another team takes them third round?
05:47Well, you could get them in the second round is what I'm saying, and you win.
05:50It could be a team that is worse than you.
05:52I think you have to evaluate what you're willing to give up for him and be okay with the result
05:57that if you don't get what you're willing to give up and someone else does, then he
06:01just plays for that team.
06:03So do you think, though, that Andrew Barry could be seeing this as incredible value?
06:07You don't have to tank for your quarterback, so you don't have to put an intentional losing
06:12product on the field come November.
06:14You can actually still try to win games.
06:16You don't just have to go young for the sake of going young, which tanking teams do.
06:21What's that round number to you?
06:23Well, I think this guy could easily have been a first-round pick next year.
06:26Okay, so what's the round number for you?
06:28If you get him in the second round now and you don't have to tank for it, isn't that a
06:31huge value?
06:32Why would you do that when you have, what, three fourth-round picks?
06:34Why wouldn't you use one of your fourth-round picks?
06:36Well, then you might not get him.
06:37You're trying to get him.
06:38I don't care if you don't get him at this point.
06:39No, no, you don't care.
06:40I mean, do you seriously want a guy that's going to step out on the field and hang on a
06:43second?
06:44No, if he steps out on the field and throws an interception, you're like, oh, whatever
06:47much money he had on this game.
06:49You don't do that.
06:50God, man, you don't hang out with my friends.
06:52They think every player is doing that every time.
06:55You have problematic friends, though, Anthony.
06:56Yeah, you do.
06:57That is true.
06:58They do accuse a lot of players being on the take, including some of the nicest guys in
07:02the league.
07:02All I'm saying is, from a value proposition standpoint, and Andrew Barry is all about
07:07value, right?
07:08He's all about exploiting market inefficiencies.
07:12Well, here you have a guy in next year's loaded draft.
07:15A first round, could be a first round pick next year, and you can get him now this year
07:19without having to tank?
07:21I mean, and then he could sit.
07:23Here's the problem.
07:24He could be suspended.
07:24There's no pressure to play him right away.
07:26You can, I mean, obviously, they'd probably trade Shador in that case.
07:30So you wouldn't have any of them.
07:32You wouldn't have the legions of Shador fans calling your coach all sorts of names because
07:36he's not playing them.
07:37So you remedy that.
07:39And then you get through the season with Deshaun Watson, and it's over.
07:43You wash your hands of that, and then you got your starting quarterback next year, and
07:46you didn't even have to tank.
07:48I'm just saying.
07:49Again.
07:50I think I laid out a pretty good case.
07:52I said this yesterday.
07:53You know, if you want to put your hand on the oven and burn your hand, that's great.
07:57You know how to do that.
07:58You did that with Johnny Manziel.
08:00Then you put a second hand on there with the way things went down with Baker Mayfield.
08:03Brandon Whedon seemed like a nice enough guy.
08:05How'd that work out for him?
08:06Just get naked and sit on the stove.
08:08Brady Quinn seemed like a nice guy.
08:09How'd that work out for him?
08:10I mean, in the end, you got to fix the position.
08:12You'll do whatever it takes.
08:13I mean, you look at Shador Sanders from last year.
08:14You look at Gabriel.
08:15Like, why the hell did you draft two quarterbacks?
08:17You're just asking.
08:18If they would have just drafted Shador and no one else, the drama we have would be minimal.
08:25Let me ask you this.
08:26Minimal.
08:26Why do you continue?
08:28Why do you put your head inside the fireplace over and over and over again?
08:33Stop.
08:34What is a worse situation off the field when it comes to baggage?
08:39Is it what Deshaun Watson was accused of, or is it this situation?
08:43It's this situation because it's gambling.
08:48Okay.
08:49And if we're talking about him betting against this team.
08:52A lot of these guys gamble, right?
08:54Come on.
08:54Let's not be stupid.
08:55What color is his dot?
08:56Is he an orange dot guy?
08:57Because they made it pretty clear to us that they were looking for orange dot guys.
08:59What if he's a high character guy that has had a gambling problem in the past?
09:03Well, then that's not high character.
09:04Dude, two words.
09:05You know it better than anybody else.
09:06Arch Leister.
09:07Okay.
09:08Come on.
09:08We're talking to a lot of guys right now that are listening on the radio who they know
09:12for a fact their kids have wagered on a game before.
09:14Does that make their kids bad kids?
09:16On their own game?
09:17No, I'm just saying in general, sports games, sports gambling.
09:20No, no, no, no, no.
09:20There's a difference, though.
09:21We can't act naive here.
09:21There's a difference.
09:22What?
09:23You're going to put $2 down on a horse racing bet?
09:25Well, he said, remember, they said he's made thousands of bets, and most of them were
09:29in the single-digit category, right?
09:32They're trying to establish whether or not he has actually bet against his team.
09:37Okay.
09:38Listen, by all means, you've got to have the investigation and figure out what he did and
09:41what he didn't do.
09:42Right now, he's a kid who's in rehab, and do you believe gambling can be a sickness?
09:47Of course it's a sickness.
09:48So he's going to get treatment for it?
09:49But does that make him a bad character guy?
09:53Compared to the players who've had domestic assault situations, I'm just trying to establish
09:58how fans feel about this, because this is going to be coming up.
10:02This is not just going to be a Soresby thing.
10:04I don't think you're trying to establish anything right now.
10:06I don't think you're trying to talk down to everybody about this.
10:09No, you're right.
10:10I'm asking how, because as society, we all have to figure out how we feel about, hold
10:16on, Andy.
10:16We are all trying to figure out how we are getting our arms around this.
10:22Gambling's not a new phenomenon, but the accessibility to it, the fact that the states have said,
10:28we need the money so bad that we're going to make it ubiquitous.
10:31And so we throw out a gambling hotline at the end of all of our reads.
10:35If you've got a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
10:38How do we feel about this societally?
10:41Are you a bad character kid if you have been gambling on sports?
10:46It depends on that.
10:47Every situation is different.
10:48They're doing the investigation.
10:49Yeah.
10:50So they'll investigate and we'll see where we're going here.
10:52I mean, it's not like, and by the way, why are we ripping?
10:55Why are we ripping this?
10:56You're ripping yourself.
10:58You realize that?
10:58Because what's happened is for years we've had gambling and we've reaped no benefit from
11:04a business.
11:06Gambling is a business.
11:07It's what it is.
11:08And so now that the people, the great people of the state of Ohio decided, you know what?
11:12People are going to gamble.
11:14We get it.
11:14Why don't we get money back on taxes for that?
11:17Why is gambling not taxed the way we do other businesses?
11:20The people of the state of Ohio said, and by the way, the people is you.
11:24It's you, Anthony Lima, right?
11:26You said, okay, we can have gambling in the state of Ohio.
11:29So now we can get some of the benefits from that by taxing it.
11:34That's all there is.
11:35Anthony, you asked if he's a bad character kid because he places bets.
11:38It's not the fact that he places bets.
11:41It's the fact that he knows the rules and he breaks the rules.
11:43That's what makes him a bad character.
11:45It's not as bad.
11:46And you can't put that in the same spectrum as the domestic violence stuff.
11:50That's also bad character.
11:51I'm not saying that those, but they aren't exclusive to each other.
11:55I totally agree with you.
11:56When you choose to take a position for a professional or college sports team, you say, I'm giving
12:02up my right to gamble on certain things.
12:05If you work for the Cavaliers, you can't gamble on NBA.
12:10You can't gamble on AHL.
12:12You can't gamble on a number of things.
12:14And when you sign the paper to say you want to work there, you're giving up your right to
12:18gamble because it's not right.
12:21So when he stepped on campus, okay, what was he, 18, 19 years old, right?
12:26And he's being accused that first year of doing that.
12:30Hey, Baker Mayfield got arrested when he was 19 years old.
12:34Like, can he, can he, didn't he have that goofy, I'm just saying bad judgment, right?
12:39So bad judgment.
12:40So could it be, that's a character issue.
12:43Would you, would you be willing to, they obviously overlook that he was able to overcome
12:48that.
12:48Can this kid overcome the gambling or they've looked over, they've looked over murder.
12:54I mean, come on.
12:54Yes, they can.
12:55They can overlook it.
12:56They'll overlook it.
12:57But I'm just saying the Browns don't need to get involved in this.
13:00That's what I'm saying.
13:01The Browns could for once.
13:03Can we back off on a drama situation?
13:06There you go.
13:06You'd be okay.
13:08You'd be okay if the Steelers ended up with him, if he ends up being really good.
13:12No, because I want Will Howard to start.
13:14Oh, okay.
13:14Not Drew Aller?
13:15No.
13:16Oh, man.
13:17I'm still torn.
13:17Yes, I forgot about that.
13:19Oh, man.
13:20All right, real quick.
13:21Can we get both those guys out of there, please?
13:22Evan, we've got Daryl Ryder coming up next segment.
13:24Evan in Lindhurst.
13:25Go ahead.
13:26Yeah.
13:26Real quick, I would start Struis or Tyson, and then I would play a lot more Schroeder with Harden or
13:33Mitchell.
13:34Those two together aren't working so far.
13:36The source we take is, if you were trying to come up with a sickness comparison, gambling addiction is a
13:41sickness.
13:42Yes.
13:42But this guy's got leukemia, and he's about to undergo radiation for a year.
13:46I mean, maybe he comes back in, like, December, and then he might have leukemia come back again.
13:53I mean, like, I don't want to kill the kid because we're all gambling.
13:56I put a couple of bucks on the Cavs.
13:58But you don't work for the Cavs.
14:00That's a thing.
14:01That's a real sickness if you bet on the Cavs yesterday.
14:03Yeah, right.
14:04Thanks, guys.
14:05All right.
14:05Thank you for the call.
