00:00Daryl, hello. Hello, boys. Daryl is obviously is brought to you by Chive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:07It's wonderful to talk to you, Daryl. Daryl, you might have heard Baker Mayfield's snippet of audio over the weekend,
00:12did you or did you not?
00:13Yep.
00:14Okay. I wanted to know, one, would you bring him back? But I guess I gotta ask, we're getting texts
00:23from the boss right now, and I think he's absolutely crazy.
00:25Well, Ken, Jimmy said that he needed an adult in the room by the time it was done. I go,
00:31he also said that Sean Watson was a swing and a miss.
00:34Like, I don't think any of that matters. I don't. I think that if they feel that this is the
00:39best opportunity, they could just go, oh, it's just business and try to work something out.
00:42But real quick, your thoughts on Baker before we move into things that are actually realistic in 2026?
00:48Yeah, I don't think the Browns would want him back.
00:51Really? Of all the people they've been willing to take chances on, they're not going to take Baker back?
00:56I think they had enough of the Baker Mayfield experience. That's why he's not here.
01:00Now, was that the old Baker Mayfield experience? Because it seems that Baker's a little different from the old Baker.
01:07Oh, really? You heard the comments. Does that sound like a new Baker to you?
01:12Well, wait a minute. You're talking about life change and money there. He's being honest. He said he wants to
01:16raise his kids in Tampa.
01:17That sounds a lot different from old Baker, but old Baker didn't have kids.
01:21Okay. I guess you can't raise your kids on $40 million a year. The economy's pretty tough.
01:26Okay, Latrell Sprewell.
01:30To relax over there.
01:33I get it. He wants his market value.
01:37The pay scale for quarterbacks is what the pay scale for quarterbacks is, even though I think it's insane.
01:43It is what it is.
01:44Yeah, I mean, yeah, it is what it is. But, yeah, I think that I don't think that the Browns
01:52enjoyed their first Baker Mayfield experience, and I don't know that they'd want to go down that path again.
01:58I think that's the way I'm going to put it, because it was not enjoyable for a lot of folks
02:03that tried to help him out while he was here and tried to help him mature.
02:08Spicy.
02:09I mean, hey, these are the facts. I mean, there's a reason Jimmy Haslam said what he did say about
02:14the adult in the room.
02:15Now, I get they went to Deshaun Watson, and that ended up being pretty terrible in and of itself, but
02:22I just think that they had their fill of Baker.
02:26I did say over the—no, I was in with Jeff Phelps on Friday, and I said that I thought Baker
02:32Mayfield going to the Pittsburgh Steelers would be delicious.
02:34It really would be.
02:36Like, if you think about what—between these two cities, it would really take like that.
02:40We always look at ways to escalate a rivalry.
02:43It's not delicious, no.
02:44Oh, for what we do for a living?
02:46It would be scintillating.
02:48Twice a year, it would be great.
02:50Who's our quarterback before we do this?
02:53We got to find our quarterback first.
02:55You can't just be hoping they get themselves a decent quarterback and we still don't have one.
02:59That's not Soresby?
02:59I thought for sure it was Soresby after our conversation.
03:01Oh, well, that's a great way to lead into the conversation.
03:03Go right on ahead there, Tony.
03:04Hey, listen, I don't know that Baker Mayfield is elevating them beyond Aaron Rodgers anyway.
03:08That's why I'm not too worried about it.
03:10I'm just worried about it twice a year.
03:11Oh, so you just don't think Baker's that good.
03:14No, he doesn't.
03:15No, no, I think Baker just has a ceiling on him.
03:18I think he'll help you win anywhere from 10 to 12 games a year.
03:21He'll get you into the playoffs.
03:23Maybe you win a playoff game or two.
03:25I just don't know that Baker Mayfield is the guy that's going to help you go out and win a
03:30Super Bowl.
03:31I feel like there's a ceiling with him.
03:33Now, granted, that is a hell of a lot better than what we're accustomed to dealing with here in Cleveland.
03:40But I just feel like there is a ceiling with him.
03:44And I don't see him being one of the all-time greats of the year.
03:50I don't see him being a top-five quarterback in the league.
03:55I think his ceiling is anywhere from 15, maybe to 10 or 9 in that range, which, again, better than
04:06what we've had.
04:06But, yeah, I don't know that he is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
04:10All right, we saw the injunction not go the way that Brennan Sorsby would have wanted it to for going
04:19back to Texas Tech and making $5 million.
04:21So the supplemental draft could be the next step.
04:25What are your thoughts considering what is out there?
04:28There's a lot of speculation, too.
04:29But what is actually provable right now with his gambling addiction, him going to rehab, and whether or not he
04:37should be on the Browns' radar.
04:38Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly with what Todd Munkin said a week ago at the Browns Foundation golf outing.
04:46I think it's too risky, too much of a gamble, quite frankly.
04:50There's a lot to unpack with that.
04:55And the Browns, I just don't think that the Browns have the luxury of taking that kind of a chance.
05:01I really don't.
05:04And, yeah, that's some PTSD from prior chances that the Browns have taken at that position.
05:10But I think we've had enough of that, okay?
05:16And can we just get somebody that doesn't have baggage here to do this?
05:21So I'm not interested.
05:22If I were the Browns, I would not be interested.
05:24I know when you're desperate, you do dumb, desperate things.
05:27And for me, I think Sorsby is, you know, that just is just too much desperation.
05:34And nothing good comes from that.
05:35Darrell, I think I agree with you for most of what you said there.
05:38And Lyman, you put me through my paces.
05:40Do it to Darrell.
05:41Well, I just want to answer the tough question.
05:43Let's say, because the Browns undoubtedly are doing their jobs just like every other team in the league.
05:48We know that they have their surplus of third and fourth round picks, whatever.
05:52What, they have four between those two that they could just throw in a bid and see?
05:58And then there's, what's the risk there, right?
06:01Like, if you end up getting a guy that could go top five, according to some, next year,
06:05if you get that person in the third round this year, like, holy cow, that's a coup, right?
06:08You don't think so?
06:09Not if he's not available to you.
06:13Look, gambling, look, you can do a lot of unsavory things in the National Football League
06:17as a player off the field, okay, and be allowed to play the sport.
06:21You can't gamble.
06:22He's right.
06:23Okay, that's the line.
06:24That's the bridge too far.
06:26Believe it or not, there is a bridge too far in sports when it comes to player off the field.
06:31You think this is by far worse than domestic violence?
06:35You think this is worse?
06:36Now, don't be putting words in my mouth.
06:38Well, I'm asking.
06:38That's why I'm asking the question.
06:40You get to put the words in your own mouth when I ask the question.
06:42I'm just saying the NFL will look the other way with a lot of stuff,
06:48and they have looked the other way with a lot of stuff.
06:51And the penalties for off-the-field behavior, including what you just asked about,
06:56have, they pale in comparison to penalties for gambling.
07:02That's the point I'm trying to make.
07:03They'll put up with a lot of stuff off the field when it comes to players,
07:07and they have over the years.
07:08The one thing you can't do is gamble.
07:10I mean, that is the line too far.
07:12As sad as that is, that is the truth.
07:15I mean, it's the one thing that we can think of that you can get banned for life.
07:19I mean, good God, we're talking about Henry Ruggs getting parole.
07:23Guys will be accused of murder in the Hall of Famers.
07:25That's what I'm pointing out, though.
07:27But that's what Daryl's saying.
07:28Like, Daryl personally, obviously, I'm going to think that that's –
07:31I thought the question was a little sideways, to be honest with you.
07:33But fine, you want to put it through the pace?
07:34I told him to.
07:35But what Daryl's bringing up is that you look at what the NFL has been willing
07:39to not look the other way for, but get past with some of their guys.
07:42Gambling and professional sports ain't it.
07:45So if – say he does arrive to me and say we – okay, fine.
07:50We've decided to give up a second-round pick for Brendan Soresby.
07:53How long is he going to be suspended?
07:55All right, if he's suspended but he's still around to be in the building,
07:57that's fine.
07:57Okay, great.
07:58So if he's still around to be in the building, that's going to be great.
08:00And then he plays for a little bit, and then they find out that he gambled again.
08:03Well, what the hell is going to happen if they find out he gambled again
08:06after the 2027 draft?
08:08Then we're in a hell of a lot of trouble now, aren't we, Tone?
08:10It's just not – like, Daryl –
08:12So you don't think there's any coming back from gambling?
08:15You think this is a sickness –
08:16Oh, Daryl, go ahead.
08:17That is the one sickness you can't overcome.
08:19We have rehab for everything, but this is the one thing you can't come back to.
08:21Obviously, I think you can overcome it, but I just think it's too much of a risk.
08:24But I'm not the one you were supposed to be interviewing here,
08:26and I apologize.
08:27Daryl, go ahead.
08:27I'm sorry, Daryl.
08:28I'm sorry.
08:29Well, I mean, here's the thing, right?
08:32He says that he got treatment for an addiction, right?
08:36And everywhere you look around NFL stadiums and NFL properties
08:39and NFL broadcasts, there's nothing – there's gambling ads everywhere now.
08:44I mean, it's in his – you know, it's in his face.
08:47So I think that that's tough for any human being.
08:52You know, there is the human element, and, you know,
08:56when you're talking about addiction, that's a serious thing, okay?
08:59But, you know, look what the NFL did to Josh Gordon back in the day
09:06with his substance abuse and addiction, right?
09:11And the penalty that he paid for that, okay?
09:16And so I just – I think it's just way too risky of a move for a team
09:22like the Browns.
09:24Had they not gone through what they have gone through at that particular position,
09:29ranging anywhere from Johnny Manziel, right, to Deshaun Watson,
09:36I'd be a little more open-minded to it and be like, yeah, sure, why not?
09:40It's a flyer.
09:41If it doesn't work out, no big deal.
09:43And if you're talking like a late-round pick, Anthony, all right,
09:47I might be a little more willing to listen to it.
09:51But when you're talking about a second- or a third-round pick, no,
09:54because those are assets that Andrew Barry is going to need to be able to do
09:59what he wants to do next April, and that's move up in the draft to get one
10:04of these quarterbacks that are coming out that are just as talented
10:08and also don't carry that type of baggage off the field.
10:12Yeah, Darrell, listen, I'm genuinely – I'm genuinely –
10:16Ken says put people through the paces when I question.
10:18I think we're going to get a lot more of Brennan Soresby's over time
10:23because this generation has quite literally grown up with it on their phones.
10:27Yeah, I mean, it's – look, we do – I do acknowledge we live in a different
10:30world, and there is, I think, something a little hypocritical when it comes
10:37to these leagues bringing in all the gambling revenue, right,
10:41which, by the way, has helped elevate player salaries because that's fresh money,
10:46fresh revenue for them.
10:47But also at the same time, the players are prohibited from participating in any way,
10:53shape, or form in some sports.
10:55Some sports, it's just, hey, you can't – you know, you can't bet on the league.
11:00I'm old – look, I'm old enough to remember when the National Football League
11:03wouldn't even acknowledge fantasy football, okay?
11:07He's right.
11:08You know what I'm saying?
11:10And now here we are.
11:11It's the National Football League brought to you by insert your gambling company name
11:15here, right, or this particular feature is brought to you by this particular
11:19gambling company here, right?
11:20They have completely embraced it, but I just – again, with what he's – you know,
11:27what he's been accused of, what he's gone to therapy for, I just think it's way too risky.
11:33Is there any chance Deshaun Watson or Shador Sanders can separate themselves as the
11:37starter this week?
11:38It would be nice if one of them would, right?
11:40Maybe something would be great.
11:42Yeah, it would.
11:42But, you know, and I've talked about this a lot on my show, on other shows, that just
11:46it's been consistently inconsistent.
11:48You go back and listen to what Todd Munkin had to say last week when he was talking about,
11:52hey, you know, my opinion changes by the day.
11:54And I think that that's just because one day Deshaun has the good day.
11:57The next day it's Shador that has the good day.
11:59And then back to Deshaun, back to Shador.
12:01Maybe they put back-to-back days together.
12:02But then you're going back and forth.
12:04I just think that's a byproduct of the inconsistency.
12:07And, look, we're only out there for one of the three practices.
12:09Now, this week will be for all three, Tuesday through Thursday.
12:12But during OTAs, we're seeing one of the three practices each week.
12:15So we don't know what's going on on the Tuesday or on the Thursday as far as, you know, what
12:19the coaches are seeing and whatnot.
12:21But it has been inconsistent with what we've seen.
12:25We've seen good stuff from Shador.
12:27We've seen not-so-good stuff from Shador.
12:28Same thing with Deshaun.
12:30So neither one of these guys has been able to separate themselves.
12:33And I think that that's what Todd Munkin's ultimately looking for.
12:36He's looking for some consistency.
12:38And he's just not gotten that.
12:39From either one of these guys.
12:41Now, he can stand up there and say he's got two starting caliber quarterbacks in the NFL.
12:44I'm going to disagree with him.
12:46Because I think if you say you've got two, you've got none.
12:48Yes, you have two guys who have started games in the National Football League.
12:51But right now, they're just wildly inconsistent when you're talking about this time of year
12:56where there's very minimal defensive pressure.
12:58You're not really under siege.
13:00You're not going to be hit.
13:01Whatever.
13:02Yes, you're doing some installs and things like that.
13:04But this is supposed to be the easy time of year.
13:07Right?
13:08I mean, for a quarterback.
13:09This is the fun time of year where all the passes should be completed relatively easy.
13:14But that's not been the case for either one of these guys.
13:17But I do think that that's exactly what Todd Munkin's looking for.
13:20He wants somebody to take the reins in this minicamp so that he can move forward in training camp with
13:25the number one guy.
13:26I just fear that we're going to go into training camp with another one of these dreaded quarterback competitions.
13:33Darrell, I've got 30 seconds.
13:34Do you think it's been more that Deshaun Watson hasn't elevated himself throughout this process?
13:40Or is Shador elevating himself so much that it's becoming a question now that Shador could possibly be the number
13:47one quarterback heading into the actual season?
13:50I'm not dodging that, Ken.
13:51I think it's both.
13:53I think it's a combination of both.
13:55That's fine.
13:55But Shador's better than he was last year, right?
13:58And he's actually getting reps in practice instead of throwing to the ball boys like we saw last year.
14:03And then also, too, you know, Deshaun, who's still recovering, shaking off the rust, all those things.
14:08He does look physically healthy.
14:09He's got that going for him.
14:11But there just have been a few moments where you're like, yep, that's the Deshaun Watson that we saw coming
14:17off the suspension, coming off the shoulder injury starting the 2024 season.
14:22Darrell, thank you very much for the time.
14:24Blessings to you and yours.
14:25You bet, guys.
14:26Have a good one.
14:27The great Darrell Ryder.
14:28Brought to you by...
14:29Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
14:32What's the takeaway you had from that?
14:34Well, obviously, aside from the Sorsby stuff, he says, absolutely not on Baker Mayfield.
14:39That door is closed.
14:40Well, it's also that maybe we shouldn't be calling it a comeback.
14:45Maybe it's something that's naturally going to happen.
