00:00Now, we welcome on the Wise Heart Right, We Make It Right, Call Kyle Wright Hotline,
00:04none other than esteemed Bill Nunn Award winner, Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer,
00:10and Cleveland.com. Mary Kay, thank you for joining us today.
00:15Thanks for having me. Great to be here.
00:16Well, Mary Kay, we often give you a barrage of different quarterback questions,
00:23but the draft is over, right?
00:24So there's not going to be any questions about any prospects going forward.
00:27Until I heard this from Todd McShay on the Todd McShay Show via The Ringer.
00:34If I'm the, I don't know, the Browns, more importantly, like the Jets, the Cardinals,
00:40I'm meeting as if this is April 1st or maybe March 15th with my staff right now.
00:46Like, come back.
00:47Because if we have the quarterback coach and we have the contract the right way,
00:52we have the psychologist putting a stamp on it,
00:54we have the FBI agents working in the security department in our organization.
00:58If we can get aligned and say collectively, we are comfortable taking this risk,
01:04I'm not batting an eye, man.
01:06That risk is on Brendan Soresby, the quarterback who is no longer eligible to play college football,
01:14meaning that he is entering the supplemental draft.
01:19Mary Kay, the supplemental draft has been very kind to the Browns previously when it comes to a quarterback.
01:25Is that something that should be on the Cleveland Browns radar?
01:30Well, first of all, I'm not entirely certain that Soresby will be entering this supplemental draft.
01:37The latest that I had seen was that he went into, and I'm not 100% certain this is accurate
01:43yet,
01:44but that he may be seeking some treatment for what could be a gambling addiction.
01:51So I think some of those things have to be sorted out first.
01:55First, and I would say that the Browns, they don't just study quarterbacks one year out.
02:01So they've already done work on Soresby.
02:05They would have to.
02:06I mean, that's what you do.
02:07You have a couple of years out that you're looking at,
02:10and he would have been in the draft next year.
02:12And, of course, they're already looking at many of the quarterbacks
02:15and doing their due diligence on many of them that are coming out next year.
02:20So that's first.
02:21Then the other thing is you would have to determine and really vet thoroughly what could be a serious gambling
02:29addiction.
02:30And, again, I'm not taking his inventory.
02:32I don't know if he has a serious gambling addiction.
02:34But the team would have to find out themselves if he does.
02:38And if he does, then they would have to try to determine if that is a risk worth taking.
02:45I used to talk to Art Schliester a fair amount because he had a radio show, and I would go
02:49on his radio show, you know, on a regular basis, basically.
02:54And he was a fine human being, a really nice guy.
02:58I enjoyed talking to him.
03:00And he really had a hard time with his gambling addiction and couldn't beat it.
03:05And he spent a lot of time in prison, and he may still be in prison.
03:09I'm not really sure about that.
03:11But you have to figure out if that is going to be a continuing problem.
03:16And that would be hard to determine because the fact that he is seeking treatment is a new phenomenon for
03:23him.
03:24And you really can't predict how that's going to turn out.
03:26Mary Kay, with some of the baggage that came with Deshaun Watson, and I guess a little bit of the
03:32PR hit that the Browns had to absorb with that trade,
03:36is that something that they'd even be willing to entertain again?
03:40In a world where Soresby does complete his treatment and is on the straight and narrow as it pertains to
03:46the gambling,
03:47would they be willing to take another risk at a quarterback that has had a little bit of off-the
03:53-field troubles
03:55to try to cure this search for the franchise QB that seems to be ongoing since 1999?
04:02Well, let me say that I actually would put in a bid for him in the supplemental draft if he
04:10enters the draft.
04:10I don't know that I would put in a first-round bid, but I probably would put in perhaps a
04:15second-round bid.
04:16I think I would do that because, once again, nobody is going to know in June whether or not he
04:22has beat his gambling addiction.
04:24You would have to take a risk.
04:25I probably wouldn't take a first-round risk.
04:28I probably would take a second-round risk.
04:31So that's where I come out on that.
04:34And as far as the Browns are concerned, Andrew Barry, if you guys and nobody in the world knows this
04:39by now,
04:39is a general manager of second chances.
04:42He believes that probably everybody has redeeming qualities and deserves an opportunity to overcome a mistake in their lives
04:51or overcome some kind of an issue in their lives.
04:55So he is definitely a general manager who is willing to take on players who have something in their past
05:03that other teams might not want to go near.
05:07And in some cases, that's worked out very, very well for him.
05:10There were a number of players last year that had issues coming onto the team,
05:15and then they did not have legal charges against them, and they did not receive any sanctions from the NFL.
05:23So it has worked out for Andrew, and many of the players that he has taken on have gone on
05:29to be not only productive players,
05:31but productive citizens and really good guys in this community.
05:36So you have to vet each situation for what it's worth.
05:40I'm sure that the Browns will do that, and they will make their determination.
05:44And again, I think it would be worth a second-round bid.
05:48I probably wouldn't do the first.
05:50I just think it's interesting in this case, for once, the Browns wouldn't have to lose games
05:56to be able to get the quarterback that could potentially turn their fortunes around,
06:00which I think a lot of people are wondering what kind of year this is going to be in general.
06:04Mary Kay Cabot, playingdealercleveland.com.
06:07So we had Todd Munkin in studio on Friday.
06:10I can tell you, in the 20 minutes before he went on the air,
06:13and then the 30 minutes he was on the air, and then the 20 minutes off the air,
06:18where he sprinkled in some Kentucky Derby talk as well,
06:20man loves his horses.
06:21Mary Kay, he never once denied your report about who is ahead in the quarterback derby,
06:29so to speak.
06:30With all of that said, it does seem like he wants to find that starter earlier rather than later.
06:36Is Shador Sanders, does he have enough time to try to make this up?
06:41Well, they do have 10 OTA practices and probably the entire three-day mini camp.
06:50And once again, as I've mentioned before and as I've written,
06:54just because you have the edge right now and just because maybe you have the inside track right now,
06:59it doesn't mean that you necessarily win the race.
07:02So no, it is still ongoing.
07:04And I did not report last week, as you know, that Deshaun Watson had been declared the starting quarterback.
07:12I said he emerged from the voluntary mini camp and, for all intents and purposes,
07:17the first month of the off-season program or the first three weeks or whatever of the off-season program
07:22ahead.
07:23That was it, ahead.
07:25And yes, I do think there is a chance that Shador Sanders can come from behind
07:32and overtake Deshaun and possibly win the competition.
07:37That's why there is a competition.
07:40I did also say, and this part was my opinion, not a report.
07:44My opinion was that if Deshaun is ahead, then go ahead and let him take the first-team reps
07:52or the bulk of the first-team reps so you can get this offense ready to play.
07:56I've watched that offense, everybody has, for the last couple of years.
08:00And this first-team offense, they need to get it together, and they need to get it together quickly.
08:04And I'll say that, you know, seven days out of the week.
08:09This offense is going to have potentially a rookie starting center, a rookie left tackle,
08:15two new rookie receivers, and they have to start repping it over and over and over and over again.
08:21And they have to start doing that now, or they will be behind the eight ball in training camp.
08:26Is there any chance, Mary Kay, if Deshaun is truly, you know, ahead,
08:32even if it's a slight edge on Shador Sanders, through that voluntary portion,
08:38should we be bracing for Deshaun to be the first quarterback up then
08:42when they start divvying up these snaps and OTAs the next time that everybody reports to Berea?
08:48Well, here's the thing to remember.
08:51When we see the veterans out there again, it's not going to be until May 20th,
08:57which is going to be OTA session number two.
09:00There should be probably, I would think, ten of those sessions,
09:03and sometimes they end up with nine.
09:05But there should be ten of those.
09:07And so we don't see them out there again until OTA two.
09:10Now, when we watch that one practice of that week,
09:15it could be the day that Deshaun gets most of the first team reps.
09:20It could be the day that Shador gets most of the first team reps.
09:23Those guys have been, you know, dividing up some of the first team reps, apparently.
09:31So we're not going to know for sure what that means for the other days of the week
09:36unless we dig and ask and find.
09:39And there are many, many ways to find out what 90 guys are doing on a practice field
09:44or what 70 guys are doing on a practice field.
09:47So there are more than one way.
09:51I mean, there's more than one way to find things like that out on the days that we're not there.
09:57So we'll have to see.
09:58It doesn't mean if we see Shador getting the first team reps on May 20th
10:04that he is for sure in the lead.
10:07And it doesn't mean that Deshaun, I mean, Deshaun, yes, Deshaun would be in the lead
10:14if we necessarily see him getting those reps on May 20th,
10:17because it could be different on the 19th and the 21st.
10:20And I want to make one other point really quickly here.
10:21And that is my point about that I think that the guy who is in the lead
10:28should get the reps with the first team in OTAs and minicamp.
10:34If that's Deshaun, then give those to him and let them roll.
10:40If that's Shador, give those to him and let him work with the first team offense in bulk.
10:48Because these guys last year and the year before did not have enough time together
10:54before the season began, and it just didn't look good.
10:58Mary Kay, rookie minicamp getting underway soon.
11:02Who are you most excited to see with all those first-round mocked rookies
11:08that the Browns were able to draft?
11:11I'm excited to see Taylin Green.
11:14I mean, I'm really excited to see what he can do operating that offense.
11:19Well, we're not going to see him operating, obviously, the full offense.
11:22But throwing the ball, I want to see what his arm looks like.
11:25And, of course, he's going to be throwing to Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston.
11:29I'm looking forward to seeing that.
11:31And why?
11:31Because quarterback is the most important position on a football team.
11:36And I want to see what they have in this QB, in this dual-threat QB.
11:41So I'm anxious to see what the arm looks like.
11:43I'm anxious to see what the speed looks like
11:47and how he operates primarily with those two receivers.
11:53So that's probably where my attention will be.
11:55Mary Kay, obviously, Taylin Green, at this stage in the preseason,
12:00isn't expected to really play a factor in the Watson versus Sanders quarterback competition
12:07that's going to take place.
12:08But I know you know how these Brown seasons have unfolded.
12:12Is there any chance in your mind that we could see Taylin Green on the field
12:17in the regular season for the Browns at quarterback this year?
12:21Well, first of all, anything can happen.
12:23And we've seen that in the past three, four, five years, whatever, here,
12:28with so many quarterbacks getting on the field in any given season.
12:31So you can't rule anything out that way.
12:33But Todd Munkin has already said that he would like to give, if he's ready for it,
12:39Taylin Green a package of plays where he can play in short yardage, goal line, four minutes.
12:44And if he demonstrates he can do that and he's ready for it
12:47and that he's not going to be turning the ball over at the rate he did at Arkansas,
12:52then he is going to be out on the football field.
12:54And that's why I think he is really a good candidate to make the 53-man roster.
13:00All right, Mary Kay, once and for all, have you figured out the difference between a diploma and degree?
13:06Because I was educated on that earlier in the week.
13:09I was met with heavy criticism for me congratulating Shador Sanders for a diploma,
13:16which I thought that's what it was called.
13:18That's what I...
13:19Well, you receive a diploma at the end of it, don't you?
13:21I thought so.
13:22I've got a diploma on my wall.
13:24You do?
13:25Mary Kay has a diploma on her wall.
13:29Well, let me just say this really quickly, because that did turn into a little bit of a thing.
13:34So the Colorado Buffaloes first put out a tweet saying that Shador came back to receive his diploma.
13:44Okay?
13:45And so I thought that was awesome and amazing, and it's great news.
13:51So I did go ahead and write that, and I was not 100% certain at that moment.
13:59I was following the lead of the Colorado Buffaloes in saying diploma, which they later changed to degree,
14:06but it was put out there as diploma, which, of course, is an accurate way to describe what happens on
14:12graduation day.
14:13But I didn't initially put degree in the headline because I thought that perhaps there was a chance,
14:23based on the tweet that the Colorado Buffaloes put out themselves,
14:27that maybe he actually did graduate last year and just didn't have an opportunity to enjoy commencement exercises
14:36and therefore went back this year to have that special moment.
14:42So I did not want to be inaccurate about that and make it seem like he didn't get his degree
14:50last year if, in fact, he did.
14:52So that's where the diploma versus degree thing came in.
14:55But receiving your diploma, your college diploma, and going back to get that is, you know,
15:01that's really no different than the degree, which I stated in the story that he got his degree in sociology
15:06and whatnot.
15:07But I didn't want to shortchange him if he actually did go ahead and get that degree last year.
15:13And I'm guessing that maybe he didn't get it now until this year, but I still don't really 100%
15:20know that for sure.
15:21There is no show in the country that can go over the verbiage of such a significant accomplishment like this
15:31show that we just did for four minutes.
15:34Mary Kay, that's why we're a little bit different from everybody else.
15:36The hard-hitting debates.
15:39We're not afraid.
15:40We are not afraid to address it.
15:42And so thank you, Mary Kay, for coming into the hot seat on that.
15:45We got that sorted out.
15:47Thank you, Mary Kay.
15:48Oh, no problem.
15:50I just, yeah, I was a little taken aback that that became a little bit of a thing.
15:55And you know what I like about Mary Kay?
15:56She's not going to go scorched earth on the Shador fans and be unprofessional and take it too far,
16:02like maybe somebody that we played earlier in the show.
16:08Thank you, Mary Kay.
16:10Oh, I thought you were about to play a clip.
16:13I'm sorry.
16:13No, you know what?
16:14We're done for the day.
16:15We're done with the day with Mark Schlereth for the week, maybe.
16:18I think we're done.
16:20Mary Kay, you mentioned this new offensive line that's going to be out there for Browns rookie camp.
16:24I think we're out of time.
16:26Yeah, we're out of time.
16:27See, Nick's familiarizing himself.
16:29I'm new to the slot, Mary Kay.
16:30Sorry.
16:31I'm used to talking to you on Sundays.
16:32And then you wrap it up.
16:33We're working on clock management over here.
16:35Thank you, Mary Kay.
16:36Let's do it again.
16:37Thank you, guys.
16:37Take care.
16:38It's like high school basketball in here now.
16:40I'm just...
16:41I'm just...
16:41I'm just...
16:41I'm just...
