00:00Mary Kay Cabot joins us right now on the Wiseheart Right We Make It Right called Kyle Wright Hotline
00:04because OTAs are here and it seems Mary Kay that there are plenty of people in the national media
00:10that want to dust their hands off and say that's the quarterback competition Deshaun Watson week
00:16one. How's it looking right now? Well it looked to me yesterday like Deshaun did get more of the
00:26reps with the starters in those two spotting periods so if you just added up the reps where
00:33he was actually working with the ones Deshaun got more of those but then when it came to
00:40an important period later in the practice Shador got a really nice choice drill where he was able
00:47to be the first man up in an 11 on 11 full speed period so I thought that was a
00:55good sign for
00:55Shador in the competition it wasn't like clearly we looked out there and it was like oh no
01:00Deshaun's getting everything it wasn't that Shador came back and was able to do that 11 on 11
01:07so they're still running a competition Shador still has an opportunity to come from behind
01:14and and try to take this thing over but I would say that just from the the sheer optics of
01:21it
01:21it looks right now like Deshaun is ahead so if Deshaun ends up winning the job we're not going
01:26to be freaking out are we like there's no there's not going to be any conversations like some people
01:31have called in about he should demand a trade I'm like no no no no no no let's not go
01:35nuts but
01:36I mean things did get nuts last year so we're not going to go nuts are we
01:41well I think the thing to remember here is that Deshaun is coming off of two Achilles surgeries
01:47and then also a shoulder surgery and he's 30 years old so just because he starts the season
01:52doesn't necessarily mean he's going to finish the season and so everyone has to be ready and as we've
01:58seen in the past few years almost every quarterback on the roster and sometimes and then some have
02:05started games for this football team so I would imagine that even if Deshaun starts the season
02:11that Shador Sanders is going to get some opportunities all right Mary Kay uh coach in the way the manner
02:19of which he speaks people absolutely love some of the stuff he's saying and yesterday he saw some
02:25interceptions in seven on seven without a pass rush and he was appalled um overall how were the
02:31quarterbacks uh do you think yesterday well you know it looks pretty good so far considering
02:38that they are installing a whole new offense learning all new terminology it looks pretty
02:43efficient to me I mean that Denzel Boston catch that was a great great play again that was in seven
02:50on sevens but that's what you want to see of course in seven on sevens you don't want to see
02:54interceptions and you're right Todd Munkin says things like that you know this was embarrassing
02:59he hates bad football that's just his personality and people probably aren't used to it yet uh because
03:05Kevin Stefanski was very buttoned down as we all know and we didn't hear him yelling and screaming
03:12and he never said anything was embarrassing he was very very even keel so you know this is different
03:18it's a change of pace uh but I think this is what he's going to need to do to take
03:23the bull by the
03:24horns and get this offense ready to play Mary Kay Cabot joining us on the show I'm not going to
03:29ask
03:29her about Miles Garrett that's up to you so I will find other things to discuss with her alignment
03:33because I know you want to do it and I'm not going to be the one that's blamed on it
03:36so do you want
03:36to ask the next question or should I uh I'm just I'll find plenty of things to ask I'm curious
03:40because
03:40obviously a big deal was made of Aaron Rodgers actually showing up to stuff in Pittsburgh and that
03:46made national headlines and then yesterday Todd Munkin once again confirmed he has not met up with
03:54Miles Garrett since he was named the head coach do you read anything into that no I don't we've
04:00asked Todd about this so many different times and he has said so many times that it's the offseason
04:06this is voluntary Miles knows how to get ready at one point he even said you guys are making a
04:12big
04:12deal out of this it's not a big deal and then the other thing to remember here about Miles Garrett
04:17there are certain generational players that they have a different set of rules and that's just how
04:24it's always going to be Lawrence Taylor was that player and Miles Garrett is in that category he's in
04:32that stratosphere where yes there is a little bit of a different set of rules now right now he's playing
04:37by the rules these are voluntary workouts so he is playing by the rules but even in times when maybe
04:44he strays outside of those lines a tiny bit that's just what you get when you're a two-time NFL
04:51defensive player of the year and arguably the best defensive player in the NFL right now well I keep
04:57getting it thrown in my face about Aaron Rodgers I'm like well one plays quarterback the other one
05:01plays defensive end I mean can I can I simplify it about that or am I digging my head in
05:05the sand
05:06and if you think I'm burying my head in the sand on this Mary Kay please let me have it
05:10well no I do think that a quarterback especially when you have a new head coach really needs to be
05:16there for OTAs I mean if you look out there at what's going on right now here with Todd Munkin
05:22and
05:22the offense they are installing a brand new offense and a new terminology and if you're not here for part
05:29of that right now I think you're really going to be behind the eight ball and the same thing is
05:34happening although we know that Aaron Rodgers has worked with Mike McCarthy it's extensively but
05:39he he's there I heard I don't know I don't think I don't know if Lamar was there this week
05:44and they
05:45have a new head coach I'd have to look into that I'm not sure if that's true or not but
05:48if you're
05:49the quarterback or anybody else on offense of a football team that has a new head coach and a new
05:54scheme and a new system I really think it's imperative that you're there especially for the quarterback so
05:59I do think there's a different set of standards I would agree Mary Kay I have the story by the
06:04way
06:04Lamar Jackson not there um because apparently communicated personal matters so they're supposedly
06:12on the same page there all right well then Mary Kay if they're on the same page that's fine but
06:17let
06:17me let me go this see I agree with you because one's a quarterback but you know I'm being told
06:22the
06:22puppet master is trying to get into John and John's trying to challenge me which ain't gonna be no
06:27challenge uh about well it's still important because one it's a new head coach and I'm going
06:33it doesn't matter to me it does not matter Aaron Rodgers is a mercurial figure kind of in the same
06:38way that Miles Garrett is but Miles Garrett plays defensive end the other one plays quarterback if
06:43Miles Garrett was quarterback of the Browns and decided to go to Egypt when training camp started
06:46like Aaron Rodgers did a couple years ago I'd be critical of Miles Garrett but I don't have to be
06:51now do I no I'm you know I'm looking at Lima when I'm yelling that I'm sorry Mary Kay you
06:56have
06:56to play referee so many times about it uh let me ask you about um what if Joel Batonio says
07:02he wants
07:02to come back and play football what do we do on the offensive line because we haven't mentioned
07:07Joel Batonio in months wait he didn't retire I not that I know of now I was on vacation a
07:12few weeks
07:13ago so maybe that happened and I didn't know Mary Kay what do we know can you answer that question
07:17then what do we know about Joel's future well we really don't know anything definitive yet it seems to
07:24me the longer it goes the less likely it is that he's coming back here to play um but Andrew
07:31Barry keeps on saying that if he wants to do so then there is a place for him and just
07:36like in the
07:36and as the case is with Miles Garrett Joel doesn't need these practices and he can show up uh pretty
07:43much whenever he would want to and uh and go out and play some good football so we'll see how
07:49that goes
07:50I I was told that you know it's just a little ways away yet what's happening with Joel yeah
07:57because I I just looked it up Joe Thomas retired on March 19th the 2018 so we're in to May
08:04I
08:05Joel can make his decision really whenever he wants I'm just kind of or is there any chance I think
08:10I'm just kind of operating that he's he's going to retire is this crazy to think I know you have
08:14to
08:15have a mindset sometimes especially as a football player but is there any chance Petonio is just
08:19going to sit and wait for maybe a significant injury on a competitor and wait for the phone
08:25call and have his agent put that out there Jason Peters kind of do something like that I'm not
08:29there have been guys that do it I just but on the offensive line I know I know it's a
08:33it's a
08:33little different but if there is a big time injury on a contender sure it's happened a couple times I
08:39just can't I'm trying to remember if Jason Peters did it I keep mentioning that name I'm probably wrong
08:43go ahead Mary Kay I suppose there is a world in which something like that can happen and you have
08:49to remember that Joel Petonio played at a very high level last year and a lot of it will depend
08:56on how
08:56his body feels right now but I suppose there is a world in which if someone picked up the phone
09:01and
09:01wanted him to come play for them that he might possibly consider that I don't know if that's where
09:07his mind is at right now but he still has plenty left in the tank I quit Sean Judkins
09:12there was talk about just how good he looked is he back to normal does that mean we're just going
09:20to get a fresh start and you know not have to worry about any of the limitations with the injury
09:25this
09:25year well I wouldn't say he's 100 back to normal he wasn't even working in team drills when we were
09:33out there for voluntary mini camp in April so he's ramping up but he did look good and explosive
09:40yesterday and he was in 11 on 11s I was very surprised about that I thought that they would
09:46ramp him up a little bit more slowly during these OTAs and then maybe work him into some team during
09:51mini camp but no he's in 11 on 11s now he looks very very good and I think fans should
09:58be really
09:58excited and encouraged by that because they are going to need him to have a big year this is an
10:03offense of course that is new and young they're going to need that running game they're going to need
10:08their power running game and uh and he just looks to me to be even further ahead than I than
10:14I thought
10:14he would be all right no we uh we learned over the last week uh Deion Sanders made it abundantly
10:20clear
10:21that he thought the prior regime didn't necessarily respect his words of wisdom is that going to change
10:29this time around with Todd Munkin well you know we forgot to ask him that yesterday uh we got back
10:38to the media room and sometimes you you know you kick yourself you're like oh we forgot to ask a
10:43certain
10:44question and that was one of them uh I did kind of have it on my list of of things
10:48to ask and and I
10:49I just didn't get it in but uh but yeah I it will be interesting to see if Todd Munkin
10:57is uh open to
10:59that kind of a conversation I don't know why he wouldn't be I'm sure he will be it's Deion you're
11:04not going to just have him show up in town and decide that you're not going to be open to
11:08that so
11:08I'm guessing that those two guys will talk and I'm sure it will be helpful I think shouldn't he be
11:14able to talk to him considering he is a current college football coach tone yeah I didn't say I
11:20didn't see that big of a deal with it now the question is um what is Deion offering up like
11:26what
11:27what is it what is his ultimate goal is it just for two football guys two coaches to just talk
11:33it up
11:33is it just about you know doing everything he can to to get his son in as the starting quarterback
11:39like what is the design what is he trying to get out of those conversations and I think
11:44probably only Deion would would know what that is what his intentions are well he knows the right
11:50buttons to push with Shador he knows how to motivate him he knows how to get him going he knows
11:56uh you
11:57know just what he needs inside the classroom and on the field and in the game and I think he
12:01wants to
12:02to share those little shortcuts and tips of things that he knows will work for him so if I were
12:09Todd
12:09Munkin I would certainly be open to that kind of a conversation uh because if it can help you
12:14unlock some of the keys uh to better quarterback play then why not go for that Mary Kay I am
12:20actually
12:21hoping I saw the uh picture of the judge in Texas with the Red Raider mascot I was encouraged by
12:28that
12:28because I'm hoping Brendan Soresby uh wins his case and is able to go back to college I don't want
12:32us
12:33having any crazy ideas here uh if he is somehow barred from the from playing football again by a
12:40guy who is a Red Raider fan because we saw the pictures he if he had to go to the
12:47supplemental
12:47draft how interested would the Browns be I I know that you've given your opinion of him but how
12:52interested do you think the Browns would be it's tough to say because I think it comes down to
12:59the gambling addiction and how you think he might be able to handle that moving forward
13:05I think that is the number one factor here from a football standpoint if you have a chance to get
13:11your hands on a on a good first round quarterback for whatever draft pick you would bid and you have
13:17that opportunity then just from a pure football standpoint I would take that but from a gambling
13:24addiction standpoint I think that he's probably got a lot of work to do ahead of him so far
13:30and he's still in rehab right now so I think that's a risk but from a football standpoint I think
13:38it
13:38would be tempting have they ever kind of communicated to you guys is the question ever been asked of like
13:42Andrew I don't know when his next media availability would be but like you know we're going into a new
13:48era here I mean sports gambling is basically all across the country and in so many ways and and online
13:53and
13:54if it's not Brendan Soresby there's going to be other guys I'm sure how do they navigate those
13:58waters when it comes to that I mean we've talked about substance abuse and and other things other
14:03crimes but this is kind of we don't have a lot of experience with athletes openly being addicted to
14:10gambling like that no it's kind of a newer phenomenon of course and I don't know how they will view
14:18it
14:18I think it's it's a very very difficult topic because it's it's tough to overcome a gambling
14:24addiction I used to go on the radio a lot with Arch Lister and he was a great human being
14:31I really
14:32enjoyed talking to him and he just struggled with that his whole entire life so it's a tough it's a
14:39tough call but remember Andrew Barry is a man of second chances he believes that players who have made
14:47mistakes in their past they deserve him to reach that hand out and pull him in and give them a
14:53second chance so I wouldn't be surprised if they would at least consider putting a bid in on him
15:00but I don't know that for sure Mary Kay Cabot you got anything yeah real quick we gotta go are
15:06you
15:06putting up the Cavs 22 point collapse in the Eastern Conference Finals game one in the same stratosphere
15:12as the drive as the fumble I saw people doing that Mary Kay we'll see it depends on if they
15:19can come back in and win the series if they win the series then it can't go into those buckets
15:26all right Mary Kay thank you very much for the time all the very best to you and yours and
15:29we'll
15:29talk to you again next week sounds good thanks guys Mary Kay Cabot on the wise heart right we make
15:35it right call car right hotline
