00:00All the reports coming out of, most of the reports coming out of OTAs are that Deshaun has continued to
00:06look good.
00:07I think it was Dan Lobby on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast suggesting,
00:12comparing it to how Joe Flacco took control of the quarterback job last offseason
00:16when Kenny Pickett was hurt and Dylan Gabriel was banged up.
00:20I'm saying that could be this moment for Deshaun Watson, but it was Daryl Ryder who was on with?
00:25The Morning Boys.
00:26Yeah, Morning Boys.
00:27Earlier today, I had to confirm that because I couldn't remember off the top of my head,
00:31talked about the legitimacy of the Browns quarterback battle this year.
00:35It appears to me like they're trying to keep the reps between Deshaun and Shadour as equal as possible.
00:43I don't get the impression that Todd Munkin has his finger on the scales like Kevin Stefanski did last year.
00:49I do feel like this is more of a legitimate quarterback competition between Deshaun and Shadour.
00:55From my standpoint, I think Deshaun is in the lead just because of his experience.
01:00And it stands to reason that he most likely will win the quarterback competition and be your Week 1 starter.
01:06Do I think he'll be the Week 17 or 18 starter?
01:08No, I do not.
01:09And I also look at this like, I don't think it's imperative that Shadour wins the quarterback competition.
01:15If it is Deshaun Week 1, I don't view that as a failure on Shadour's part at all.
01:20If anything, I think a little bit of a benefit, hey, that just buys him some more time.
01:25So, specific to the beginning part of that clip where Daryl says this is a more legitimate quarterback battle than
01:32last year,
01:33do you buy that?
01:34Yeah, it does feel like it is.
01:36And I'm kind of surprised that I feel that way, mainly because of what we went through last year,
01:40where it just kind of felt like, as Daryl said, like the thumb was on the scale.
01:44It did feel that way with Stefanski and a lot of how that went down.
01:49Munkin seems like he's running it the right way.
01:51And if Deshaun has the advantage, Deshaun probably should have the advantage right now.
01:54So, it's interesting.
01:55I think there's a lot of things that you can compare to the last year of Stefanski,
02:01and it's just going to look good by proxy.
02:04I might do it a lot, Nick.
02:05Well, no, I don't mean that in like a bad way to Munkin or that, you know,
02:08but like I just I think Kevin was in a bad situation given look at the four names in the
02:16quarterback room.
02:17And I also think Kevin was like if you follow the story of how things have unfolded here,
02:23I think he went from a position of power to the second they tried to switch the offense around Deshaun
02:29and it aggressively failed.
02:31I think he was in quicksand from that moment on.
02:33So, and again, I think that's a benefit to Todd Munkin because I think Todd Munkin can come in
02:38and I do think the same thing we can say for Browns fans, the same thing in the locker room.
02:44Todd Munkin just being different than Kevin Stefanski gives him an early leg up for this season.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Because a lot of these guys don't tie coaching changes with dysfunction the way that they did
02:55maybe when Kevin Stefanski came in where half of those guys had experienced, you know,
02:59three different head coaches in three years.
03:01Sure.
03:02I once got in a little bit of an argument with Coach Riz on the air about the idea of
03:06whether or not
03:07Munkin would be able to look at this objectively and be able to look at it as if it was
03:11a true
03:11quarterback competition.
03:13And the argument that Coach had made was at 59 years old, he just wants the best quarterback
03:16out there, right?
03:17And from what we can tell so far, he's operating with that mentality.
03:22And I think that's all anybody can really ask for in this, right?
03:25Yeah.
03:26I mean, I think it doesn't feel rigged.
03:27It doesn't feel skewed one way or another.
03:29As Daryl mentions, the reps have been basically split between the two of them down the middle.
03:33Like it did, it feels like it's a fair shake.
03:36I think, uh, I just think it's a little early.
03:39Oh yeah.
03:40This could all change by the way.
03:41And I, and I think that's where, and that, by the way, it doesn't mean I expect Munkin to
03:45be different in any of this, but there's a lot of factors in here.
03:48Uh, it, could I see the organization?
03:52If Todd Munkin says, Hey, Sean's a guy, could I see the organization?
03:57Maybe say putting, putting their hand on the scale sure could, um, either way, like, Hey,
04:04I think Shador's taking advantage.
04:06Well, we're going to go ahead and put Deshaun out there again.
04:08Like, I think the organization and when I say organization, I'm talking not just of Jimmy
04:12Haslam, but Andrew Barry, I do at the analytics department.
04:16I do think that's a bit of a wild card and I just, just because it has been a seemingly
04:24fair to this point, doesn't mean once you get to, uh, certainly even mandatory OTAs
04:30that it's going to stay that way.
04:32And so it's interesting.
04:34We're in a spot where I can't tell whether Browns fans are super into this quarterback
04:39battle or completely out on it.
04:42I think it's kind of going, it's about as interesting as I think it possibly could be
04:46at this point though.
04:47Well, we just have such little information, you know, like we just actually just don't
04:51know so much about what their thought process is, how they're actually performing all of
04:55this.
04:56We just have so, so little to go off of.
04:57Now, what is interesting to me too, and Daryl put it in that clip, Daryl mentioned the
05:01idea that, uh, well, I, you know, I don't think it's going to be the quarterback week
05:0417 and I'm going to, you know, we, we went down that road yesterday, that idea.
05:08Uh, and I've made the comment, something along the lines of how I, I thought that you don't
05:12worry, Shador, if you don't win the job, you're going to get on the field eventually.
05:16And that comes from an idea that I just don't believe in Deshaun Watson morning show also
05:19touched on that as well.
05:20And they went down that same path.
05:22And then the belief that if Deshaun starts, they believe that your door will see the field
05:25eventually.
05:26Isn't there like a, isn't there just a fundamental flaw, Nick, when this many people just don't
05:32believe that if you throw Deshaun out there, he's going to finish the season.
05:36Uh, yeah.
05:37Yeah.
05:37Like, shouldn't that be, shouldn't that be some sirens going on for a lot of people that
05:41if you, if you say Deshaun's going to start the season, as many people as we can talk to
05:46just don't believe he's going to finish the year.
05:47But I mean, that was a fundamental flaw last off season where, I mean, I think the Browns
05:52were even like, we're probably going to see multiple quarterbacks this year.
05:55And I think you and I both were people saying, you know, that's not how you win.
06:00And everybody else just kind of like, I, I, I think the one thing the Browns do really
06:05well is I think they normalize ideas.
06:07I think they've normalized the idea of Deshaun Watson starting, uh, in the fifth year of,
06:11of this, this tumultuous run in a way that I don't think a fair amount of other organizations
06:17would.
06:17So I think it's, you're right, but, but it's just, the Browns are really good at normalizing
06:23this and people kind of just go, well, sounds like we're going to see multiple quarterbacks.
06:27Think about how lack of faith that has to be in a quarterback to put them out there with
06:30the idea that 95% of people when they discuss it are like, yeah, but Shador will get a chance.
06:34Yeah.
06:34But I feel like if Shador won, it'd be the same thing.
06:36No, but I just look at it differently.
06:38I, cause if, if you told me Shador is a starter week one, I'm betting on him starting all 17
06:42games.
06:42I think you would.
06:43I don't think most Browns fans.
06:44Really?
06:45You just, and you let me know.
06:47My perception on that is wrong because I, I feel like, and he could just stink up the
06:51joint around week 10 or week 11 and we call it a day.
06:53I don't worry about his injury history.
06:55I don't worry about whether or not he's going to end up.
06:58Cause the big thing with Deshaun, although I don't think he's going to be good.
07:00But I don't think he'll stay healthy for 17 games.
07:02That's got, that's got to weigh into that way more.
07:04I think the Shador thing is a hundred percent people just, the, the people who do not expect
07:08him to last a full season are the people that just don't think that guy can play.
07:12I think, you know, you, I just think that's what it's about.
07:16So you don't think it'd be 17 games for Shador if they started in week one?
07:18Oh, not what I said.
07:19That's why I'm at, no, now I'm asking you.
07:21If Shador wins, I would expect him to start the full season.
07:23All right.
07:23So we, we feel it the same way then.
07:25But I think most other, I mean, we, I just, every time we talk about Shador versus Deshaun,
07:30I just, I get way too many, or even like the videos that we post about, uh, from, from
07:3692, the fans account that we get tagged in of our videos, it's, it's a, you know, $230
07:41million quarterback versus a fifth round pick.
07:43What are we doing here?
07:44And I think there's enough people out there that believe that mentality that Shador is
07:47just a fifth round pick.
07:48I mean, a year two quarterback, uh, that I feel like is going to be, again, I'm not, I'm
07:53not saying he's going to light up the world or anything like that, but my suggestion
07:56would be, he's going to at least look functional out there for 17 games enough to the
08:00point where he doesn't get benched.
08:01I can't say the same about Deshaun.
08:03And I I'm speaking just even from a health standpoint, I can't say that, but I, I, if
08:07I uno reverse this in my head, if Shador gets to start week one, he's starting all 17 and
08:11I don't feel the same way the other way.
08:12Oh, I just think with, well, maybe I just have more belief in Shador that way.
08:18Maybe that's where you come in too.
08:19Maybe we just have more belief in Shador, the quarterback.
08:21And that just is what that is.
08:222-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-9-2 is a more legitimate quarterback battle than last year.
08:29All we can ask for, there's going to be a lot of things.
08:32And again, like this isn't, this is actually the nice way in which Todd Munkin taking over
08:36for Kevin Stefanski is a, it's a good thing for him is the first time the Browns win and
08:42you get that post-game press conference where Todd Munkin does the Mike Pettin, everything's
08:48better after winning kind of comment.
08:49It's the whole raspy voice going.
08:51Fans are going to react to that and say Kevin Stefanski would never.
08:54He's going to be dynamic in that, the post-game locker room speeches, the ones that everyone
08:59thought like Kevin was doing because he was held hostage to do.
09:02The Munkin ones are going to slap.
09:04You mean the heavily edited ones of Kevin?
09:05The heavily edited ones.
09:07The ones that Niles Garrett rolls his eyes in the background of?
09:09Yeah.
09:09Yeah, those ones.
09:10Those are going to go great for Munkin.
09:12The nice thing is I think Niles will still be rolling his eyes in the Todd Munkin ones.
09:16Just maybe in a different, nope, can't even do it.
09:19Nope.
09:20He's not Jim Schwartz, so I'm going to roll my eyes.
09:22Yeah, yeah.
