00:13Mary Kay, what will ultimately decide who gets the starting job at quarterback for week one for this football team?
00:20It really is going to come down to who is going to give them the best chance to win.
00:24And it's going to be difficult to figure that out because until the lights are on, until you're getting sacked
00:31and hit and having to read the defenses and do all of those kinds of things in a live game,
00:36it's going to be really tricky to determine who gives them the best chance to win.
00:40But I think it's going to be an incredibly, incredibly lively training camp.
00:44I think it's going to be a very heated battle.
00:47I think you can see that the stakes are really high.
00:50These guys are already going all out in their summer break to prove that they want this job.
00:57Deshaun comes back into town.
00:59And before you know it, Shador comes back, too, and they're battling it out.
01:04So it's going to be intense.
01:06It's going to be heated and let the best man win.
01:10Jared Verse said that he's seen two elite quarterbacks here in town.
01:17Is that just a good teammate saying really nice things, or does he have reason to believe that there's some
01:22real talent in that quarterback room?
01:26Well, I'm sure he has reason to believe that there's some real talent in that quarterback room.
01:30He hasn't been around very long to see it.
01:33He was only in a couple of OTAs and then mini camp.
01:36So, I mean, he has a pretty good handle on it.
01:40But we'll have to see.
01:41Once again, they weren't in pads.
01:43They weren't doing some of the things that they will have to do to win a football game.
01:48So I think as camp goes on, everybody will get a much better feel for where this thing is going
01:54to go.
01:55It seemed like there was a bit of a controversy, not with us.
01:59We had zero problem with it on this show.
02:01But we saw some of the scuttlebutt regarding the quarterbacks having their own either camps or having workouts with various
02:09players that were different.
02:11Did you have any issue with that whatsoever?
02:14And were you taking inventory of who was working with who?
02:20No, not really.
02:22I remember, of course, during mini camp when we asked Shador about it, he said they didn't want to do
02:27separate camps because it was divisive and things could get kind of weird that way.
02:33And, you know, he did not want that.
02:36So, no, not really necessarily taking inventory.
02:39These guys are going to get ready in the way they know how to get ready.
02:44And, you know, what I do know is that Deshaun was hosting a camp down in South Florida.
02:50I think he's already done it or he's doing it now or something.
02:54I'm not exactly sure about that.
02:56But, no, I don't think too much needs to be read into that.

03:05Coach Riz on Twitter yesterday said he did want to discount Dylan Gabriel having a possibility to be the starting
03:13quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
03:14I don't necessarily think he was talking about week one.
03:17I don't even think we're going to make it to the end of camp that Dylan Gabriel is going to
03:21be a part of this team.
03:22I think he'll probably be traded.
03:24What's the future hold for him?
03:27Well, I think the future for Dylan Gabriel is to go out in this camp and prove that he deserves
03:33to be the third quarterback on this football team.
03:36And that will be his task.
03:38They will put three quarterbacks on the roster.
03:41And then they probably will have one on the practice squad as well.
03:45And it's probably going to come down to what happens between Dylan and Kalen Green.
03:51If Kalen demonstrates that he's ready to go out there and do what he wants, Dylan Gabriel probably would have
03:58an opportunity to go somewhere else and see if he can get his career back on track with another football
04:04team.
04:04If Kalen is not ready for that, then Dylan will have that chance to be the third quarterback and they'll
04:10try to perhaps squeeze Kalen onto the practice squad.
04:13Don't know if they could do that, but they might be able to do that.
04:16So I think that's where it stands.
04:18And I've always said that, you know, Dylan hasn't really had a chance to showcase his skills or talents here
04:26in the best situations.
04:28He was really, really put behind the eight ball last year, starting in London, starting in Pittsburgh, and really nobody
04:33was in a great situation last year with the supporting cast with the offensive line.
04:39I mean, even Joe Flacco had to go elsewhere to be able to complete some passes and gain some yards.
04:44Who would start with the leg up between Kalen Green and Dylan Gabriel?
04:47Because we all believe it was Kevin Stefanski's choice, but there's a new head coach, but the same general managers
04:53here.
04:54What does any of that matter?
04:55Who do you think?
04:56Would it just be Dylan Gabriel because he's got two years in the NFL instead of just starting off?
05:02In terms of becoming the third quarterback?
05:04Yes.
05:05Yes, ma'am.
05:08I think it has yet to play out.
05:10I think that Kalen is still learning.
05:12He hasn't had all that many opportunities to work with the starters or anything like that yet, and he won't
05:18get a lot of those.
05:19Neither will Dylan.
05:20But I think those two guys need to kind of battle it out and see who's ready for that number
05:24three role.
05:25I think if the season started tomorrow, I do think that it would probably be Dylan.
05:31But once again, Kalen did a really nice job, especially towards the end.
05:35He's coming on strong and coming up the learning curve, and he's got to go quickly and show what he
05:41can do.
05:42And as I mentioned, in that regard, then you probably would listen to some offers for Dylan Gabriel.
05:48Mary Kay, we were talking about this earlier, and we, this show, I'd like to speak for Ken.
05:54Maybe he disagrees.
05:55We don't really like the victimization thing of quarterbacks.
05:59Like, most Browns quarterbacks have not had a great setup over the years, since 1999.
06:04With that said, we've heard so much about Shador and what, all the ways that the team held him back.
06:11What about Dylan Gabriel?
06:13Have we been fair to Dylan Gabriel?
06:15I mean, he loses his job because of a concussion.
06:16He gets booed by the fans at the end of the year when he dared come into a game in
06:21relief of Shador for a play or two.
06:23Like, that's not normal circumstances for a rookie.
06:27No, it's not at all.
06:29And I've been saying that pretty much all offseason that Dylan Gabriel really got a raw deal last year.
06:35He was put in very, very trying circumstances.
06:39He's a much better quarterback than he's been given credit for, and I do think he's one of those guys
06:45that will be around this league for a while.
06:48And maybe primarily as a backup, but when he gets his opportunities, he will be ready.
06:54And the thing about Dylan with the Browns right now is he's just not going to get any of those
06:59chances, really,
07:00to show that he can be, other than right now, the third quarterback on this roster.
07:05He's not going to get them.
07:06They don't have those chances.
07:07They are not conducting a three-way quarterback competition.
07:11This is a two-way quarterback competition.
07:13He's going to get the scraps, and Taylor Green is going to get the scraps.
07:16But I think there's more to Dylan Gabriel than he was able to show last year,
07:21and I do think that people are way too hard on him.
07:24Well, if we have four quarterbacks in this camp, what's going to show me that we're different at all,
07:28or is this also going to be another disaster like last year?
07:32Well, once again, it's not a four-way competition,
07:34and I don't think that they're going to be spending as much time on the other two guys as they
07:39will with Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders.
07:42They can't.
07:43They don't have that luxury of being able to do that.
07:46I mean, they will get their reps, but they're certainly not going to be getting their reps with the first
07:51team.
07:51Maybe a couple here and there, and with Talon, you have to throw him in there.
07:56If you actually want to use him in those ways we talked about,
07:59you're going to have to give him some of those reps occasionally here and there.
08:02Now, the place where they can make their hay will be in the preseason games.
08:06I do think that both Deshaun and Shador will play in those preseason games,
08:11but Dylan and Talon will have an opportunity to finish out those games,
08:16and that's where they can showcase their skills.
08:18Last night at the ESPYs, there seemed to be a nice moment between Miles Garrett and Shador Sanders.
08:25I don't know.
08:25Was Shador up for any awards or anything?
08:27I don't know.
08:27I didn't watch it.
08:28Why would I watch that?
08:29They had a nice moment there that was captured by, I think, Shador's video team.
08:34Do you think, Mary Kay, if Shador had played better, that Miles Garrett is still a Cleveland Brown today?
08:42Oh, that's hard to say because I think that Miles was going for something more than a quarterback playing better
08:49than he played last year.
08:51Miles was going for the bright lights and the big city and a chance at the Super Bowl and all
08:56of those kinds of things,
08:57and I still don't think that that was going to be enough to make him want to stay here.
09:02Why'd you ask that question?
09:03Ken seems irritated with me, Mary Kay, for asking that question.
09:08Because I'm not going to bog it down.
09:10I'll bring it up later.
09:12I heard Lance Reisland.
09:16Sorry, I was looking at draft stuff, too.
09:18Lance Reisland said that he could see Jerry Judy having a big season.
09:24Nick Wilson said he could see Jerry Judy, like, not making the team.
09:29What type of season do you think we could get out of Jerry Judy?
09:33Making those one-handed grabs.
09:34Those are very different opinions of Jerry Judy right there, Mary Kay, on this station.
09:42Well, I really do think it's an opportunity for Jerry to rebound.
09:47He did not fare well with all the quarterback, the lack of continuity last year and everything that was going
09:53on at quarterback.
09:54He's working really, really hard this offseason.
09:57He seems rejuvenated, but it's going to come down to, I think it's going to come down to the quarterback
10:03play.
10:03He's going to get his chances.
10:05He's still going to be the number one receiver, or at least he's going to start out the season as
10:10the number one wideout.
10:11So he'll have an opportunity to go out there and have that 1,000-yard season again and have that
10:17Pro Bowl season again.
10:18And it will be interesting.
10:19He and Shador Sanders did not have chemistry on the field last year.
10:24They just did not.
10:25We all saw it.
10:26There were times where they even argued, and we could see that captured on film.
10:30So those two guys, if Shador wins the job, they have to make sure that they have their act together.
10:37And if Deshaun wins the job, then they have to find some chemistry.
10:40And I think they've already been doing that, those two.
10:43So I think he has a real opportunity here, and he will for sure get his chances.
10:48Do you need a top-five quarterback in the NFL?
10:53No.
10:54You don't need a top-five quarterback.
10:55Whoa!
10:58Wow.
10:58Okay.
10:59Go ahead, Mary Kay.
11:00If you have a good enough defense and you have a good enough supporting cast,
11:05then you can have, I would say, a top-15 quarterback and still challenge for the playoffs.
11:12Now, ideally, of course, you would want a top-five quarterback, but you can still get the job done.
11:17They're just going to have to make sure that they don't have too much of a defensive drop-off this
11:21year with Miles gone,
11:23because that's when you can get away with a top-12, 13, 14 QB.
