00:00We go to the Wisehart Wright, we make it right, call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:04She covers the Browns for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland.com.
00:07She is Mary Kay Cabot.
00:08Hello, Mary Kay.
00:09Hi, Mary Kay.
00:10Hi, guys.
00:11How are you doing?
00:12We're all right.
00:14Are you, is your guard down?
00:17Are you relaxed?
00:18Or is everything okay?
00:20There's no team out on the field right now.
00:23You know, we have this little bit of time where we get an opportunity to kind of dial it back
00:28a little bit.
00:28But it goes very, very quickly.
00:31And you just have to pack it all in as quickly as you can.
00:36All right.
00:38So, Chad.
00:38That was a big basket.
00:39It is because I'm getting tired of this story.
00:42But you caught the Chad Ochocinco, like, had inside information that Deshaun Watson is going to be the starting quarterback.
00:49Like, I'm hearing these stories and, like, nothing shocks me and nothing is overwhelming to me.
00:57And if I was a head coach who just took over a team, I would probably want the guy that
01:03has the most reps in the NFL at least to get things started in the beginning of the year.
01:07Or was it a wild epiphany that Chad Ochocinco said that it looks like Deshaun Watson is the starting quarterback
01:14for the beginning of the season?
01:15To me, it's not.
01:16But no.
01:17No.
01:17No.
01:18It was not.
01:19I mean, you can look all over the Internet and find different opinions, different reports on what's going on with
01:26the Browns quarterback competition.
01:27And just because a former player who may have talked to whoever puts something out there like that, it doesn't
01:36mean that it's true.
01:37There are a lot of people that are seeking news and tidbits of information on this quarterback competition.
01:44And it changes from day to day.
01:46And there's just nothing going on with it right now.
01:50There's nothing new.
01:51This is the break.
01:53And nothing has changed.
01:54So the reality of the situation is that those two guys will come back in training camp, and they will
02:01battle it out, and we'll see where it ends up.
02:04Mary Kay, where is everything with Brendan Sorsby right now?
02:08And has the thought changed that Browns probably not getting involved there?
02:14Well, once again, it's that time of the year where everybody is on their break, and it's really kind of
02:20hard to get information about things like that.
02:23But I still, for now, I'm sticking with what I reported last week or two weeks ago, that they are
02:31unlikely to put a bid in on him.
02:35As of right now, I don't believe that has changed.
02:39There will be a pro day coming up on July 10th.
02:42Maybe things would change after that.
02:43Maybe they'll meet with him one-on-one.
02:45I don't know the answer to that yet.
02:47But I think at this point, they're still probably steering clear.
02:54Is there any part of you that thinks that maybe it's not a bad idea just to put in a
02:57bid on Sorsby?
02:58And if you did, and if you think it's a bad idea, just say no.
03:02But if you did, what would you be willing to put in as a bid for him?
03:06You know, I mean, I've gone back and forth and back and forth over this.
03:10And I think at this point, it probably isn't something that they really should be doing just because of the
03:19situation that they're in.
03:20And I always say, I do think they need to turn down the noise in their quarterback room some.
03:26So it might not be the best time in the world to do something like that.
03:30But it's so close to him just getting out of rehab, and it's very difficult to stay clean in these
03:36types of situations.
03:37So probably not the best opportunity for him in this moment.
03:42But I don't know.
03:44I mean, I wouldn't be completely 100% opposed to a bid.
03:50And then you get him into your program, into your structure, and you see where maybe that might take you.
03:57So I don't think that they necessarily should do it, but I wouldn't be 100% opposed to it.
04:03What do you think the Browns have?
04:04I asked this question the other day, and I'm really curious, especially for someone who's around the organization as much
04:09as you are.
04:09What do you think the Browns have learned about trying to bring in a high-profile media circus-type guy
04:17that is going to bring attention?
04:19What do you think that this ownership group has learned over the years about doing that and how to deal
04:26with that?
04:28Well, I think that they take it on a player-by-player basis.
04:32And if they feel that the player can come into their program, their infrastructure, and farewell, and they can give
04:40him the supporting cast that he needs,
04:41they're willing to take a chance on those kind of guys.
04:43And we know that Andrew Berry is a GM of second opportunities and that he's always willing to reach his
04:49hand out and help someone who he believes deserves a chance.
04:53So from that standpoint, I don't think anything has changed much.
04:57I think he's always operated that way.
04:59We've seen that from minute one, that he will bring a player in if he feels like he's a good
05:04person who perhaps made a bad mistake.
05:06So nothing has changed in that regard.
05:08I just don't know if at this point in time, as Todd Munkin observed, that they are willing to go
05:15down that slippery slope.
05:17Mary Kay Cabot joining us, PlainDealerCleveland.com.
05:20A mandatory minicamp comes to an end with four of the five starters on the offensive line seemingly in place,
05:27Mary Kay.
05:27The other spot is interesting because it could go a lot of different ways.
05:31Seem to be good reports about Austin Barber, the tackle that they drafted out of Florida.
05:37Could he be involved in this in some way, shape, or form, or do you expect him to be a
05:41backup at tackle this year?
05:43I would expect him to be a backup this year, but you never really know.
05:49They're open positions, and they have some shuffling and mixing and matching that they can or will do.
05:55And so I don't know how it's actually going to turn out.
05:58As of right now, I don't think he's slated to be one of the starting five, but I do think
06:04there's a world in which he will get on the field this season, maybe at tackle, maybe somewhere else.
06:10He certainly looks the part.
06:12He almost has that Joe Thomas left tackle look about him.
06:17But I don't think in the early going that he's necessarily one of their starting five.
06:25Is Parker Brailsford that guy?
06:29Well, I know they would love it if Parker Brailsford could end up being that guy and start right away,
06:34but I think it's trending right now a little bit more towards Elton Jenkins at center.
06:39I think they're looking at it and realizing that maybe it might be a little bit too much to have
06:44a starting rookie left tackle and a starting center, and it, of course, might depend on who your starting quarterback
06:50is.
06:51If you've got Shador back there, you might need a more veteran center who can slide the protections and do
06:57some of those kinds of things.
06:58So, it will all come together, and they just need to put the puzzle pieces together.
07:05Mary Kay, the schedule, the training camp schedule was released yesterday.
07:09Just your thoughts on having the Bills with a joint practice on August 20th and how important that will be
07:16for Todd Munkin?
07:18Well, first of all, just to kind of correct this a little bit, the training camp schedule was not put
07:24out yesterday.
07:25That hasn't come out yet.
07:26The only thing that came out yesterday was when the rookies report, when the veterans report.
07:33So, just a reporting date, that means really nothing to the fans for the most part, and then the one
07:38date that they will be practicing against the Bills.
07:39So, we're still awaiting the Browns training camp practice schedule.
07:43That's not out there yet.
07:45It is fair to say, though, that's probably, I would think, the 29th.
07:49I mean, if their veterans have to be there on the 28th, right, at the latest, it would be the
07:5329th?
07:53It would start.
07:55Right.
07:55But just in terms of when fans can come out and how many practices will be open and all of
08:01those kinds of things and how to get tickets and all of that, that information has not been released yet.
08:05And that should be out, I would think, sometime this week, I would guess.
08:11But we'll see how that goes.
08:13But, you know, I think it's going to be interesting.
08:15I think the practice against the Bills, I think that's going to give them a great gauge and barometer of
08:21where they are with a lot of different things.
08:24And, you know, it will give them a chance to go against a really good quarterback and a good defense.
08:30So, looking forward to that.
08:32It looks like it's only going to be one practice because if it's August 20th and the game is the
08:3722nd, I guess that's only going to be one day of that.
08:40We'll see how that goes down.
08:42So, yeah, I mean, it's exciting and it's going to be here before we know it.
08:47Mary Kay, time for our favorite position here, and that would be wide receiver.
08:51Yay.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Isn't that the truth?
08:54Great reports on Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston at a mandatory minicamp.
09:00How does that translate when we get to the regular season?
09:03Did you see things that make you think, yep, okay, they nailed this and they're good to go?
09:08Or are they still going to be in a huge, who's going to be our top wide receiver stage?
09:14No, I think they upgraded the position significantly.
09:17Secondly, I think the fact that they did so well in OTAs and minicamp bodes well for this season for
09:23those guys.
09:23What I'm not sure that they have is that bona fide number one surefire receiver.
09:30Jerry Judy has to play that role, but maybe he would be better suited actually to a number two receiver
09:36role.
09:36But they do have what they need to excel in the pass-catching realm this year.
09:41And, of course, we didn't even see any of Harold Fannin during practices.
09:44So when they add him into the mix, I think that's going to even enhance the whole picture.
09:51But it's going to be much better this year than it was last year.
09:54Did Boston or Concepcion, one or the other, look significantly better to you or more intriguing?
10:01No, I don't think so.
10:03The only thing that you would notice about the two of them is that Denzel Boston has such incredibly sure
10:10hands.
10:11I may have seen him drop or miss one pass.
10:14It doesn't have to be a perfect pass.
10:16He doesn't have to be open.
10:18It can be a contested catch.
10:20He's making that catch.
10:21He's got great hands, and I think fans are going to love that about him.
10:25Thanks for joining us, as always.
10:27Sure.
10:28Thanks for having me, guys.
10:29Thanks, Mary Kay.
