00:00Birthday traditions can range from enjoying a bake and a shark on Maracas beach to kick
00:05back at home with friends. Then there's Shamuddin Salim. He rides for 145 miles for his birthday.
00:13Naturally he was sore the first time he did it. Imagine I'm like a hundred feet from home but
00:18I'm standing on the pavement and I can't move holding my bike. And people thought I was like
00:23like I wanted to use the washroom or something but it's not that I just couldn't move you know.
00:27He survived that attempt and could not kick the habit. Prior to that ride every year I
00:33I normally do that ride for my birthday starting it three years prior to that. And my my goal is
00:39was to always pass my last mileage. So if I would do 120 I would look to cross that. So
00:47that's how
00:47I've come to doing 145 miles now. So it's a milestone in the making and continue to make it more.
00:54The ride starts at Price Plaza in Chagones at 3 a.m. and they are expected to return at
00:593.30 in the afternoon. We start early because of you know beating some of the sunlight. So
01:05by six o'clock we are having breakfast in Manzalina and the sun has even come out yet.
01:10So we're trying to beat the sun because we're trying to make the distance with less sun.
01:14So that is why we start so early. He said the coconut rim cyclists will be
01:19accompanied by support vehicles along the way as they pedal coast to coast.
01:24Saturday's ride that's coming. Our first stop from Chagones is to the uh velodrome in Arima.
01:29That's our first stop. Right. That's about probably 20 miles.
01:34Right. And then we'll stop there not for long with just a little water break. We'll probably eat
01:39some bananas whatever and then we're going again. The next stop from there is Manzalina. So we have
01:43stops on the way from Manzalina. We'll stop at the river mountain and before Mayaro there. Right.
01:49And we'll take like photos and stuff and then we'll stop in Mayaro for a little water break again.
01:56And then we move on to Tableland which is where we have lunch. So we have lunch provided on the
02:02ride
02:03and then so we're going down. However when the temperature rises the hills come calling as well.
02:08The most challenging part of this ride would be would be when you when you're leaving Rio Claro.
02:16So basically but yeah from from Rio Claro when Rio Claro proper the tongue heading to Tableland
02:24there are some rollers and those rollers tend to be a little challenging right because the hills are very
02:31high and they're consistent. You have like five very big rollers that you have to combat
02:37wit. The idea of a cold beverage post-race erases the trauma he inflicted on his legs.
02:45In a birthday ride you know we would have like little folks I have a after lime at the end
02:52of the
02:52ride by me cook some food we have some beers and you know we have scotch whatever you know the
02:58close guys who are custom riding with me you know they would come sometimes they might even go straight
03:04from the ride but let's take a refresh and let's follow me home. Salim indicated that he's lost 20
03:10pounds on his cycling journey but he's gained tons of enjoyment a greater appreciation for his country
03:17and the last for more miles as the years are on. Sergio Dufour, TV6 Sport
03:23Now we're just gonna come back to today.
03:23So now we're just gonna drive a little bit.
03:24We get into the ride.
03:25Then on the ride would be a little big.
