The Royal Chartered Borough of Arima has officially launched its August festival.
00:05
It kicked off today with a curry duck competition and Mayor's Trophy Challenge.
00:11
Our cameras may have been a bit early to sample the duck,
00:14
but we were right on time to catch the Mayor and Council unveiling the plans.
00:20
As Mayor, for the past two years,
00:23
I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve my hometown.
00:31
I hold the highest regard for it and a place that has shaped my chapter of my life.
00:43
It's a dual celebration for Burgesses.
00:46
Today, on the eve of a dual national celebration,
00:53
I wish the people of Trinidad and Tobago a joyful Emancipation Day.
01:01
And I extend heartfelt greetings to the people of Arima
01:05
on the occasion of our 137th celebration of the Borough anniversary.
01:15
The Borough presents the first People's Cannon Blast from Calvary Hill Park at 6 a.m. tomorrow
01:22
and a 7 a.m. smoke ceremony.
01:25
And of course, you can cool off in the afternoon as it's race day at Santa Rosa Park,
01:30
featuring the annual Emancipation Day Derby.
01:33
August 1st marked the abolition of slavery 187 years ago.
01:43
A day Arima was declared Royal Chartered Borough in 1888.
01:53
Two milestones that speak religion, freedom, dignity and identity.
02:02
There ought to be key cultural events.
02:06
As we come here, this borough of Arima,
02:09
I encourage all of us to be guided by the spirit of unity, pride and purpose
02:20
to stand together in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow.
02:26
Let us move forward with one mind, one Arima, one spirit, one future and one love.
02:37
The events follow straight through until September 1st
02:41
and it represents the Arimian way of giving back.
02:45
Our borough has given us so much to this nation.
02:50
From the leadership of Sir Solomon Wuchoy, the first local governor-general was from Arima,
03:01
to a brilliant cultural icon like Lord Kitchener,
03:07
Bunjigalin, sporting legend legends such as Larry Gomes,
03:14
Cliff Bertrand, Inslee Armstrong.
03:18
Arvashid Tawari, Rupnarain, TV6 News.
