Arima has planned a full month of activities to keep you and the youngsters at home for the holiday a bit more occupied, from Borough Day Celebrations, to circuit car racing to horse racing and car shows. Arimians will be happy to host you.

00:00The Royal Chartered Borough of Arima has officially launched its August festival.
00:05It kicked off today with a curry duck competition and Mayor's Trophy Challenge.
00:11Our cameras may have been a bit early to sample the duck,
00:14but we were right on time to catch the Mayor and Council unveiling the plans.
00:20As Mayor, for the past two years,
00:23I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve my hometown.
00:31I hold the highest regard for it and a place that has shaped my chapter of my life.
00:43It's a dual celebration for Burgesses.
00:46Today, on the eve of a dual national celebration,
00:53I wish the people of Trinidad and Tobago a joyful Emancipation Day.
01:01And I extend heartfelt greetings to the people of Arima
01:05on the occasion of our 137th celebration of the Borough anniversary.
01:15The Borough presents the first People's Cannon Blast from Calvary Hill Park at 6 a.m. tomorrow
01:22and a 7 a.m. smoke ceremony.
01:25And of course, you can cool off in the afternoon as it's race day at Santa Rosa Park,
01:30featuring the annual Emancipation Day Derby.
01:33August 1st marked the abolition of slavery 187 years ago.
01:43A day Arima was declared Royal Chartered Borough in 1888.
01:53Two milestones that speak religion, freedom, dignity and identity.
02:02There ought to be key cultural events.
02:06As we come here, this borough of Arima,
02:09I encourage all of us to be guided by the spirit of unity, pride and purpose
02:20to stand together in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow.
02:26Let us move forward with one mind, one Arima, one spirit, one future and one love.
02:37The events follow straight through until September 1st
02:41and it represents the Arimian way of giving back.
02:45Our borough has given us so much to this nation.
02:50From the leadership of Sir Solomon Wuchoy, the first local governor-general was from Arima,
03:01to a brilliant cultural icon like Lord Kitchener,
03:07Bunjigalin, sporting legend legends such as Larry Gomes,
03:14Cliff Bertrand, Inslee Armstrong.
