As the country celebrates its 62nd anniversary as an Independent nation on Saturday.

Servant Embau Moheni from the National Joint Action Committee stopped by Morning Edition to discuss how far we've come as a nation.
Transcript
00:00Servant Mbahu Mohini says NJAC's entry into the 1970 Black Power Revolution in TNT brought
00:07an unprecedented outpouring of love and togetherness under the leadership of Chief Servant Makanda
00:12Daga.
00:13Mohini explained the reason for the 1970 march in Tobago.
00:18We were trying to get the nation to begin to live and act as a nation in terms of the
00:28building.
00:29Okay, for instance, the question of national unity, right?
00:33It is NJAC in 1970 that advocated to that need for national unity, hence you had a demonstration
00:43with 40,000 persons involved down to Kaunee, down to Cuva in order to unite the nation.
00:52Mohini says as soon as Brother Daga announced that NJAC was going to march, a number of
00:57things took place.
00:58However, the march did bring a sense of unity and togetherness across the country.
01:03Within about three to four weeks, you began to hear people speaking about a new consciousness,
01:10right?
01:11So, just within that short period of time, people's thinking, their approach.
01:19I witnessed it because I'm from Tobago and I witnessed areas where two families or two
01:27individuals would have been at loggerheads with each other.
01:31That movement, they said, look, let us put that aside, let us unite for a better nation.
01:37He says NJAC also recognized that the vast majority of people in TNT were not benefiting
01:43from the country's natural and human resources.
01:46NJAC addressed the entire economy as a whole, right?
01:53And the position was that the commanding heights of the economy should be in the hands
02:01of our people here.
02:04Because if you are talking about an independent nation, right, we should be able to feed ourselves.
02:09Look at the import food bill today, right?
02:13Our people should be educated and trained and to be able to occupy high positions within
02:21the society.
