00:00So yesterday, Matt, we had Brian Baldinger on, our Odyssey NFL insider expert,
00:08and he used the term clean slate, that that's what Todd Munkin has to have
00:12when it comes to his perception of our quarterback situation,
00:16and more specifically, Deshaun Watson.
00:19And of course, that's an impossibility for fans, right, Matt?
00:21We've seen some of the worst quarterback play in NFL history these last few years,
00:26but that was highlighted by Deshaun Watson and his bad quarterback play.
00:30Last few years, decades, brother.
00:33Well, we've had a number of them.
00:35We certainly have.
00:37Analytically, it's been very bleak.
00:38Sure.
00:39Especially since they have new numbers to kind of track all these things,
00:42and Deshaun Watson was bottom basement,
00:45and really all three quarterbacks last year for the Browns were horrendous.
00:49So then, of course, afternoon show in their weekly with Albert Breer,
00:53they asked him about whether there could realistically be a clean slate
00:57for Deshaun Watson, and here's what he had to say.
01:00I just look at the amount of money invested,
01:02and it's going to wind up being $230 million,
01:05and the draft picks that you put into it,
01:07you didn't have a first-rounder for three straight years.
01:10Like, I just don't know why you wouldn't at least want to make sure
01:14in this last year, which is a year of transition anyway,
01:17whatever got him into the top five or so quarterbacks in the league,
01:20whether or not that's in there at all anymore.
01:22And I think if you start the season with Shadour Sanders or Dylan Gabriel,
01:26it becomes really hard to do that.
01:28I think you almost, with a veteran player,
01:30you almost have to start with him as your starter.
01:32And if it doesn't work out, then it's really easy to go to one of the young guys.
01:35I think if you're talking about, like,
01:37who has a chance to be a top-shelf quarterback,
01:39who's the most talented quarterback on the Browns roster,
01:41I still think there's very little question that it's Deshaun.
01:44It doesn't mean the other guys aren't going to make it,
01:46but if you just look at the success rate of guys who are drafted
01:49in the top half of the first round versus guys in the third and fifth rounds,
01:52if you just look at the physical ability versus the other two,
01:55you know, I still think Watson's got the best chance,
01:57even if it's a very small chance of actually getting back where he was before.
02:01All right, Matt, where are you on this?
02:03Because obviously it's something we're going to be talking about
02:05until the coach names a starting quarterback.
02:08He said he'd like to have things settled by the end of June
02:11as you get closer to actual training camp.
02:14I can make the case that Shador would be better off for his career
02:18to actually come off the bench here.
02:19I know a lot of people don't want to see that.
02:21So what do you think about this?
02:23He used the term year of transition.
02:26I think that's garbage.
02:27And I like Albert Breer.
02:29I'm a fan.
02:31But that's crap.
02:32There's no such thing.
02:33How many more years of transition do Browns fans have to go through?
02:37Seriously.
02:38You know, it's a year of transition.
02:40I know you have a new coach, and he's never been a head coach before
02:43at this level and all that stuff.
02:45But, no, you play the best people, and you try to win.
02:48Everybody's been going crazy about this Browns draft and how good it was
02:51and how much young talent they have from the last two drafts.
02:54I think it's too early to – yeah, you want to talk about it.
02:57We've got topics.
02:58We've got Albert on.
02:59You've got Baldinger on.
03:00You're talking football.
03:00I get that.
03:01But to make that decision today?
03:04No.
03:04I want to see what Watson looks like in camp and everything else before we go crazy.
03:08But to say, well, it's a year of transition, so you might as well see what you have.
03:12No, if Shadour Sanders is the better guy, play him.
03:15Play the better guy.
03:15Well, I think if it's remotely close, you go with him, don't you?
03:19Like, even if Deshaun is better, but it's like slightly,
03:22and you're wondering coming off the surgeries when the bullets are actually flying,
03:27I think if it's remotely close, I think you go with Shadour.
03:30I agree.
03:31Because he's the future.
03:33Or at least could be.
03:35Watson's not.
03:36I can't even believe we're still having this conversation, but I get it.
03:40Oh, we will continue to have this conversation.
03:43Are you kidding me?
03:44Of course.
03:44This is the lifeblood of all Brown's conversations right now.
03:48But I don't want to couch it, or I don't want to preface it with,
03:53well, it's a year of transition.
03:54No.
03:55No.
03:56You've got young players.
03:57You've got an angry leader of the team that's not showing up for stuff.
04:01Let's win.
04:03Oh, you're talking about Miles Garrett?
04:07Sure.
04:08You're saying he's angry?
04:09What do you know, Matt Derry?
04:11I just listened to 92.3 The Fan.
04:13I get yelled at.
04:14I get yelled at when I'm like, he's clearly sending a message.
04:17Of course.
04:18He has to be.
04:19He didn't even come to the groundbreaking.
04:21Hello.
04:22That's right.
04:23Ken Carman went to the groundbreaking.
04:25Miles Garrett, is Ken Carman the leader of the Cleveland Browns?
04:29Did Ken put on a hard hat?
04:31Matt, did he have one of those guitar shovels?
04:33You know he brought his own with him.
04:35He puts it on every day.
04:36Yeah.
04:37He's a nitty-gritty Ken Carman, Matt.
04:39Yeah, we had the groundbreaking and everything.
04:41I saw.
04:42And the shovels had guitar handles on them, Matt.
04:44They did.
04:45Yes.
04:45So this is the Rock and Roll City, for those that don't know
04:48and listening outside the city of Cleveland.
04:50Every logo, every time, for every sport.
04:54Oh, my God.
04:54We'll see, though.
04:55The WNBA, they haven't officially named the team yet.
04:59Are they going to go back to the Rockers?
05:01Wouldn't they just go back to the Rockers?
05:03If the Cavs lose tomorrow night, that will be our topic the following day.
05:08So I do want to ask you, though.
05:11I see no reason why this thing needs to be settled by late June.
05:14That is the one thing I'm a little confused.
05:16We had Todd Munkin in studio on Friday.
05:18He was great with you guys, by the way.
05:19You guys did a great job.
05:20I thought he was.
05:21I thought, man, he was really good.
05:23Great radio.
05:23I could tell you, at no point did he reject any of the reporting
05:30that has been out there from Mary Kay or anybody else
05:32about Deshaun Watson having the lead.
05:34And we talked to him 10 minutes before the interview.
05:36We talked to him 20 minutes after the interview.
05:39When are you getting Mary Kay and Shiloh Sanders in the studio?
05:43Well, we will have Mary Kay on tomorrow.
05:46I'll text Shiloh.
05:47Yeah, let's see.
05:49Thank you, Owen.
05:50Let's see.
05:50Hey, do you think there needs to be any kind of a rush to do this in June?
05:55By June?
05:57Like, what about, don't we hear every year that the joint practice
06:01is where you find out what you really have?
06:04Because preseason games are totally a joke.
06:06They're totally watered down.
06:07I think we're closer and closer every year to, like,
06:10eliminating all of them completely and just saying,
06:12hey, like college football teams, just start your season
06:15and we'll go from there.
06:16They're going to keep adding games anyway.
06:17And so the joint practice, they got Buffalo this year.
06:20You're telling me that if Deshaun Watson is your starting quarterback
06:24but looks terrible against the Bills and Shador plays well,
06:28that we should start Deshaun Watson?
06:29Does that make any sense?
06:31None.
06:31None.
06:32Makes no sense.
06:34It's about winning.
06:35This is no longer the days of, you know, and I get, like I said before,
06:39new coach, new staff, all of that, but year of transition, no.
06:44No.
06:45Uh-uh.
06:46I'm not buying that at all.
06:47You play the best guy.
06:48Are you, are you, you said you listen to the Todd Monk in interview.
06:52Are you, are you buying the tough talk?
06:55Because I could tell you what he said on the air.
06:58Uh, it was a, a little bit of a sanitized version off the air.
07:05I mean, the, uh, what everybody said about him and how he talks a hundred percent true.
07:09One of the most fabulous talkers that I've heard off of.
07:12Oh, my God.
07:12Oh, I bet.
07:13I bet.
07:14I mean, we almost had to delay the rest of the show because he just wanted to talk
07:17about the horses in the derby.
07:19He was, did he give you any parenting advice?
07:22No.
07:23No, he was, he was talking about this big house that he was, that he bought on,
07:26uh, I'll just say on the West side and he's like, I don't know what I'm going to do with
07:29this thing.
07:29All these rooms, all these, I got no kids in the house.
07:32Empty nester.
07:33Wow.
07:34Amazing.
07:35He should have me over.
07:36I've, he should have a party at 93, the fan party.
07:38And this is the thing.
07:39I feel like Todd Munkin is unlike Kevin Stefanski in that Kevin was walking on eggshells, always
07:45worried about, well, you know, I grew up in a professional family of sports.
07:49We got to keep this gravy train going.
07:51We can't, we can't stomp on any egos or any of that.
07:54Uh, Todd Munkin.
07:57I can tell you this.
07:58If they start out like, Oh, and three, Todd Munkin's going scorched earth.
08:01He's not worried about his next job.
08:02He's very, it's very genuine.
08:04That's the thing.
08:05Like, and I get what Albert was saying on the afternoon show yesterday, but Munkin seems
08:09very genuine and transparent and is going to play the best players.
08:14I truly believe that.
08:15I don't think he's going to go with year transition year or the ownership wants to take a look
08:20because they're paying him.
08:22I think he's going to play.
08:23Who's the best guy.
08:24That's that's that novel concept.
08:26I love, I know.
08:27I love that.
08:27By the way, we didn't even mention that.
08:29Uh, Jimmy has them.
08:30I love when he name drops Daryl Ryder, uh, during a press conference.
08:34You have a great question there, Daryl.
08:36I love that.
08:36Well, Daryl's Daryl's commish set into a side.
08:39Oh, I love that.
08:40Well, listen, Daryl, uh, Daryl was scoop central when it came to all the stadium stuff.
08:45So, uh, Jimmy's probably wondering, how do you, how do you learn all this?
08:48How do you find out about all this?
08:50Who's the leak?
08:50Is it me?
08:51Is it Jimmy Haslam?
08:52Is he the leak?
08:53And Daryl's been playing at Coy all these years.
08:55That's the boosom buddies that we get.
08:56I've been waiting my whole life for it.
08:58Those two are hanging out.
