00:00We are staring down the barrel of this quarterback battle, and Daryl was on with the morning show.
00:05Daryl, fresh off vacation, he'll be joining us Wednesday at 6 o'clock.
00:09Oh, his sabbatical is over.
00:10His sabbatical is over. The man is fully rested, and that'll last about three days.
00:16Like three minutes.
00:17Because we tend to work Daryl quite a bit here.
00:20But here's Daryl outlining his take on the quarterback spot from here.
00:25I think Deshaun, just because he's the veteran, just looking at the situation.
00:29I was thinking about this yesterday because I was out at the Shador Sanders two legendary youth football camp listening
00:35to what he had to say about the situation.
00:38But just thinking about where the Browns are at right now, I think it's much easier to transition from Deshaun
00:44to Shador than to transition from Shador to Deshaun, if that makes sense.
00:48And I do feel like there would be a transition.
00:51Now, I also feel like Shador could win this job, but if I had to put odds on it or
00:56whatever, I would say Deshaun is the favorite to win the job and start week one in Jacksonville.
01:02All right, so I don't have a problem with Daryl saying this because I think this is how a fair
01:07amount of people think.
01:08And so it's not that that – I think maybe my concern is if the Browns are thinking this way.
01:15I think we're trying to put ourselves in the position of the Browns and trying to think like they think.
01:21And so a lot of that is based off of what happened last year where they went into the season
01:25saying, you know what?
01:27We're going to do the four – or at the very least two quarterback dance this year and we'll kind
01:32of let it play out from there.
01:35If you're doing that this year, I think that shows a fundamental lack of growth from this organization.
01:42It doesn't work.
01:43If you go into the season thinking we're going to play two different quarterbacks and it happens to be these
01:49two specific quarterbacks, you're setting that locker room up to fail.
01:53Yeah, you can't be worried about the easiest transition.
01:55If you're thinking about that, you've already lost.
01:57If they end up losing, they end up losing.
01:59But you should be putting them in a position to succeed at all costs.
02:04And the way you do that is by running a clean quarterback search and sticking to it unless injury happens
02:13or, of course, the all hell breaks out.
02:15But you shouldn't go into it being like, well, week six, here comes Shinnor.
02:18No, yeah.
02:18Whoever gets this job, you should be thinking that they have the job for all 17 weeks.
02:22Yes.
02:22And I don't understand this thought process.
02:24And way too many people currently have it.
02:27That it's better for Shinnor to come off the bench.
02:29That's not going to do anything for Shinnor.
02:33Do I think Deshaun will be able to play all 17 games?
02:36No.
02:37I don't know anybody listening that does.
02:38But the Browns have to think that.
02:40If you give him the job week one, you have to stop thinking that it's going to be this easy
02:44handoff week eight, week nine, week ten, or whenever you get bored with Deshaun Watson.
02:48That's not how teams should operate.
02:51Now, the thing that I feel confident about is I do feel like Todd Munkin is in a better position
02:57of power to think like this and to follow through on thoughts like this.
03:03Meaning, hey, we want to start one guy this season.
03:06And that's a critical component to our success.
03:09Because Kevin, by the end, was a guy whose power had been chipped away.
03:14Kevin had told everyone who would listen.
03:16And the reason why I think that is because of what the report said.
03:20That Kevin really didn't have any power in any of the big decisions.
03:23Deshaun Watson?
03:23Oh, I kind of went along with that one.
03:26Right?
03:26Oh, Baker Mayfield moved on from Baker.
03:28Well, that was an organizational decision.
03:30Apparently, Kevin never made a decision in Cleveland.
03:32It was just foisted upon him.
03:34And I say that to say I don't think that's how it's going to go with Todd Munkin.
03:38I hope you're right.
03:39I hope you're right.
03:40I don't know.
03:41There's a weird thing that happens in Berea where the head coaches typically end up becoming puppets.
03:47And they're just playing out the hands of whoever's in charge and whoever Jimmy Haslam likes the most in that
03:51current moment.
03:522-1-6-4-7-4-00-9-2.
03:55Daryl's perspective on the quarterback plan is that he gives Deshaun the early advantage here because he is the veteran.
04:04And by the way, that makes sense to me.
04:05I don't agree with it because I've seen it.
04:08But I understand that line of thinking.
04:09You lean on the veteran, right?
04:11I just abhor the idea of, well, it's easier to go from Deshaun to Shador than it is from Shador
04:19to Deshaun.
04:20No, neither of those is easy.
04:21And if that's the way you're thinking, you've already screwed this season up.
04:25And here's the key element that I feel like not only Daryl might be missing, and I thought Baskin and
04:31Phelps also kind of missed this a little bit as well.
04:33Phelps had an interesting point.
04:34He brought up the idea that neither one of these quarterbacks seem like backups to him.
04:40And he's like, I just can't envision either one being backups.
04:43They might both have backup quality play, but I can't envision one of them being backups.
04:46And so when Daryl mentions that transition and how he's like, I can see Deshaun to Shador, but I can't
04:52necessarily see the Shador to Deshaun.
04:55I think it misses the element of Deshaun doesn't have a choice.
04:59And if Deshaun has to backup Shador Sanders and has to sit second, then that's what he has to do.
05:04People act as if Deshaun is this great power and great leverage in all of this.
05:10He really doesn't.
05:11He has to get on the field in order to showcase what he can do if he wants his football
05:15career to ever get off the ground again.
05:17So if you make Shador the starter, Deshaun has to just kind of go along with it.
05:22There's no revolt coming unless he just quits the game completely.
05:26I guess that is on the table.
05:27Do you get cap insurance for that too?
05:29He's going to step away, but he's not going to do that.
05:31He wants to play football.
05:32He wants to play at a high level.
05:34So he's got no choice.
05:35He's just going to have to sit there and then bide his time.
05:37And the same thing with Shador.
05:38Shador, and in terms of the idea of I don't see either guy as a backup, I hate that logic
05:44anyways.
05:46And I think it will be held against Shador in the future.
05:49If Shador doesn't work out here and next year he's on the open market, I think that perception around the
05:55NFL will hurt him.
05:56And I think it is so stupid.
05:57If your starting quarterback can't handle noise behind him or a quarterback having a camera crew or whatever it is
06:07that people don't like about Shador,
06:08I'm sorry, your quarterback isn't worth spit.
06:11It's just not.
06:12That's not that like, what are we doing here?
06:15And the reason why I don't worry about either guy here is the way to this point that they've handled
06:22the quarterback situation.
06:24You know, Deshaun and Shador could have made this divisive with the camp thing.
06:31They could have done that.
06:32There's a respect there.
06:33I know people don't want to hear it, but they like each other.
06:35And it goes back to Deshaun helping Shador at the end of last season.
06:39It goes back even before that, though.
06:40Like the relationship that Deshaun has had with the Sanders family is before Shador ever became a member of the
06:45Browns.
06:45But I think they have enough of a personal relationship right now from being coworkers that I'm just not –
06:52none of that – what matters is who gives you the best chance to win.
06:56And that was one more thing I want to tackle because I'm getting really annoyed at the phrase, who gives
07:02you the best chance to win.
07:04That is incredibly generic because there's who gives you the best chance to win week one,
07:11and then there's who gives you the best chance to win over the course of 18 weeks.
07:15And those are two definitively different things.
07:19Deshaun might give you a better chance to win week one.
07:22Shador might give you the better chance or probably gives you the better chance to stay healthy and play across
07:2618 weeks and develop.
07:28That's more what I'm interested in.
07:30And now it's time to figure out what the hell – which one of those Todd Monk is more interested
07:33in.
07:33Oh, for me, it's like a circle gets the square type scenario where Shador would be my answer for week
07:38one.
07:38Money would be my answer for the second part that you laid out all 18 weeks as well.
07:42I just – Sean hasn't shown me anything to think he's the best quarterback for week one.
07:46This just gets back to if you want to have an honest conversation about Shador, the football player last year,
07:53we can do it.
07:54But if you go with – if you start the sentence with statistically the worst quarterback ever, I know you're
08:01not going to be able to do it.
08:02If when we talk about Shador, the young man, and you say, well, he's just too loud, he's too this,
08:10he's too that, or whatever the hell Rex Wren was saying on Twitter, you've told me you've already made up
08:16your mind.
08:17And there are too many people that have made up their mind with Shador, and in fairness, that is on
08:21both sides.
08:23But there are people in the middle.
08:25Shador is a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
08:27I think he gives you the best chance to win across 18 weeks, and I really was intrigued by some
08:32of the playmaking.
08:33That somehow has turned me into either the biggest Shador hater or the biggest Shador stan.
08:39I don't know why he'd be a Shador hater.
08:41I don't know, because I didn't say he was fantastic last year.
08:44Okay.
08:45Yeah.
08:45Yeah, sometimes the Shador superfans have a weird way of being like, oh, wait, we don't understand you're trying to
08:53support what he's doing right now.
08:54And they conflate that.
08:58Guys, every person I meet wants Shador Sanders to start.
09:00I just, I don't, maybe I'm not meeting enough people, or maybe I'm not meeting the right people.
09:05I've now been trying to ask people for about a month straight when I meet them, who do you want
09:10to see at quarterback?
09:11I can't find people that don't say Shador.
09:13Now, maybe it's because they know I want Shador too, and they won't piss me off in the moment.
09:15I'm not sure.
09:16As if it turned you into the Incredible Hulk.
09:18Well, they think, they think I'll just all of a sudden rage on him or something.
09:21I don't know what that is, but I can't find people in the general populace that are like, oh, yeah,
09:26Deshaun Watson, this is what I want to see on my Sundays.
09:29I just, I don't find those people.
09:30Maybe they exist, but I don't find them.
09:32So, it's interesting you say that, because most everyone I've talked to would like Shador to play.
09:37And when they, when they, when they talk about, you know, who they want to play, if they don't want
09:44Shador to start, it'll just be, I don't want Shador to start.
09:47I've not heard a lot of, I want to see what Deshaun has, or I'm a big Talon Green guy,
09:52or I'm a big Dylan Gabriel guy.
09:54It's, well, I just don't want to see Shador start, which again, tells me exactly where you are on Shador.
10:00Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, I think you're right about that.
10:03It's just a, it's a wild spot that he's found himself in.
10:06He just, he cannot, for certain people, there's just nothing he can do that is right or that is good.
10:11And that's just, that's too bad.
