00:01starting the show talking loose bodies good morning Jim Costa John Jansen Heather Park
00:07Gov and Greg behind the glass I do want to attempt to talk people off the ledge
00:19I don't think people are panicking about the matchup with Cleveland I do sense some panic
00:23about the Tigers John good morning oh hey I'm good okay okay no no I know you're proud of yourself
00:41though um and I'm about to be real proud of myself because on the way home last night I picked
00:47up Jack
00:47from his baseball game I was telling hey did you hear the news about Tarek Skubal oh yeah I mean
00:53the guys were talking about it and um I asked he uh he said what is what does loose bodies
01:01mean
01:02and very good question yeah because I mean I want to know as well John can you let me know
01:07well and I told him I like okay so this is insert dad jokes I'm like uh that's the diagnosis
01:13I had
01:14before I lost weight but it was only one I just had one loose body um and then I went
01:19further with
01:20like I'm like well you know I mean hey there's certain women may have that reputation oh god
01:27and so what does that mean dad yeah exactly well he's in high school he knows exactly what that
01:33means uh and so yeah that's so what do you see what Skubal's been up to uh I'm just his
01:38elbow
01:40so I I don't know what that means um but it it so he googled it and I said well
01:47better be careful bud
01:49yes um and he said it is it could be bone or cartilage that is floating around in your joint
01:57and he had searched elbow so it said bone or cartilage that's floating around in your elbow
02:02sounds uncomfortable and if you saw him in one of her more recent starts he took the glove off and
02:07kind
02:07of had that awkward yeah what's going on with my elbow motion and I was listening to Dan Dickerson
02:14and Dan Petrie um and Dan said Dan Petrie said he had that same thing and he would actually be
02:24on
02:24the mound and it would lock up and he would just have to shake his elbow to to you know
02:29unlock it
02:29and go and he had the surgery and he said it was instant relief and you know so it's it's
02:35not uncommon
02:35no you'll find I mean you could get another thing pump pump into google and type it in right
02:40you'll see a bunch of pitchers this year that are going through it so this is not uncommon it's just
02:46the third elbow surgery for Tarek Skubel he of course had Tommy John when he was younger he had
02:52the flexor surgery in 22 and now he'll have another procedure under the knife with his pitching elbow
02:58none of this is good the Tigers are going to be without him for an extended period of time
03:03that's not good especially for a team that's already missing Casey Mize and Justin Verlander and
03:08they don't have Jackson Jobe or Troy Melton yet both expected back later in the season so none of
03:13this is good the team is 500 after a loss last night so I which is not good except you're
03:20in the
03:20bad division yeah no none of this is good so I get this sense of dread like okay but I
03:28want to attempt
03:28to talk Tiger fans off the ledge he is not expected to be done for the season correct selfishly he
03:35needs
03:35to come back and pitch well at the end of this season for his own wallet the Tigers shouldn't fall
03:42apart in the AL Central there's no runaway train in this division first place is 500 so if he comes
03:48back
03:48you're still in it he has to pitch well because he wants to get paid and maybe his market comes
03:56down
03:56because of the the looming work stoppage and three events on the elbow now does it make it more likely
04:02it's not his last year in Detroit these are just all the things I'm processing and realizing
04:06it doesn't have to be the end of the world no it doesn't um and so the matter at hand
04:13is how do the
04:14Tigers keep their head above water until he comes back now this is a guy that's only going to be
04:20pitching one out of every five games and so you have the four other ones that are already scheduled
04:26and you have Frambois Valdez Casey Mize will be back the issue is Flaherty Montero has actually
04:34been pretty good yeah he's been solid yeah um and when do you get Melton when do you get Job
04:40you know
04:41and those are you know measured throughout the course of the season it sounds like maybe for Melton
04:46the end of May beginning of June it sounds like Job is not going to be until August right as
04:53long as
04:53his team doesn't go into a free fall right reinforcements are on the way so the stat since
04:58the start of the 2024 season the Tigers are 46 and 23 with Tarek Skubal on the mound without him
05:07145 and 146 a game below 500 they didn't have Valdez during that stretch see that's the other
05:15right beauty of making that move in the offseason was you had insurance for when he leaves now you have
05:21insurance for when he's hurt right you still have a front line guy to break up any long losing
05:27streaks start some winning streaks and now they can't be a 500 team but in this division 500 can
05:35keep you afloat so I don't think there's a cause for panic nobody likes this this isn't a good thing
05:41it's going to make it a lot harder for the Tigers right well I mean if if you were or
05:47if say you if
05:48we were say in the American League East okay I'd be a little bit more panicked if we were in
05:57any of
05:58the NL League divisions yeah if you told me we got to win 90 games I'm starting to do the
06:03number
06:03crunching going uh right but if you're just sit there saying okay our we've got to keep pace with
06:09the Guardians who at full strength are a 500 team the White Sox who okay they found themselves a
06:16a home run hitter but there I think they'll start to drop off again they're not a 91 team no
06:23a Kansas
06:24City maybe they found a little bit of juice in the last week they've won four in a row do
06:29they make a
06:29run at it okay but they're they're not going to be any better than right around you'll give or take
06:37two or three games around 500 so it's the division that helps you manage your anxiety yeah in regards
06:46to what does it mean with Scooble being out for call it three months okay yeah I mean it's it's
06:54it's
06:54and we've heard some doctors say if you know if they if they take a loose body out there was
06:59an article
06:59in the free press today and there's no other complications there's no arthritis it's a minor
07:06loose body or bodies anywhere from six weeks to 12 weeks 12 weeks would be three months three months
07:14right so it's again we won't know and I don't know that the Tigers tell us very much no I
07:21don't do
07:21their like updates on the status of injured players periodically but they're not going to put like a
07:27a release date type of no maybe we get a well it was it was more positive than we thought
07:34he's on
07:35a mound you know you'll get updates along the way what do you make of this from his standpoint and
07:40his
07:41financials because that's what this is all been it's been a right a staring contest I'm going to be
07:46a free agent I'm going to get paid hundreds of millions of dollars how does this play into it not
07:50good not good at all because every time you go under the knife and it could even be just a
07:56minor
07:56one and they'll play you know Boris and Scooble and everyone in their camp is going to downplay
08:02this as well it was a minor procedure you know that pitchers go through this is not a big deal
08:06nothing to see here it's his third time under the knife and every time you open up a joke even
08:13if
08:13it's only arthroscopic you're still you're still rummaging around in there and teams are going to
08:24get scared away but does that mean instead of seeking 40 million a year for 10 years eight years
08:31now he's looking at I don't know 25 or 30 oh I don't know if it crashed that dramatically it
08:38all
08:39depends on what what comes out of this because they're gonna have to share that he'll have to share
08:43that with other teams and the last blurb in the free press article you're referencing again where
08:47they cross-reference with a doctor the last blurb is about you never know what if he needs a future
08:52Tommy John surgery a second Tommy John surgery that's when you would really start to screw with
08:57you're not getting eight-year eight-year commitments and 10-year commitments it may be more of a short-term
09:02deal correct and the only thing I'm saying is and I don't know how many teams would have been in
09:09the scoobal market anyway it's I mean are we talking about four or five teams that's Yankees
09:15and so for him it's probably more term and ultimately amount because the more the longer
09:23you contract the more you're going to make yeah but over it's it's probably a shorter term deal
09:27that's the big concern that we had here even before this in the offseason we're like hey he's already
09:31had a couple arm events well you never know it could be a Dodgers type team that swoops in and
09:36does what they did with Kyle Tucker and says hey we don't feel comfortable giving you a 10-year
09:39commitment an eight-year commitment but we'll overpay on a three or a four-year commitment right
09:45because we have the funds and and if it doesn't work out we're still going to be okay we'll be
09:49fine we'll just sell a few more show hey sign bats and it'll all be all right right exactly
09:54248-539-9797 but I think the uncertainty plays into like he can't just kick his feet up and take
10:00the
10:01year off right he has to and I think he will rehab to get back and be pitching let's call
10:06it three
10:07months that's August ramped up September this team's expectations the postseason and he can't
10:13limp to the finish line knowing he has hundreds of millions of dollars so that's where it's in
10:17our benefit here if he had been on a multi-year deal or had multiple years of club control I'm
10:24not
10:24risking it it's just too valuable I'm not risking right he has to risk it because of what's at stake
10:29and I'm curious of because there's been a roller coaster of emotions of how people feel about
10:35how the Tigers have handled this is it ultimately proving that they've handled this correctly
10:44with a pitcher's arm and the fact that he's already had a couple arm events they didn't commit
10:52term or major funds to him they took him to arbitration that was one thing hey did they handle
10:58it right did they not handle it right what's Boris doing what's Scoobal doing did they ultimately
11:03handle this is it playing out that they've handled it the right way because they did they're not going
11:10to get stuck with a guy that's had now three arm events it's a great question and it's hard because
11:16do I give them credit because of an injury well no but it's it's playing the odds game and it's
11:26a
11:26pitcher he's got a violent motion like how long does this last do we think he's going to have a
11:33career like JV very rare right that's the that's the that's the thing is you if you map this out
11:39and
11:40you go boy he's got the third procedure now third surgery I'm not putting it into the universe other
11:47than to suggest it's been discussed what if he needs another Tommy John at some point yeah you really
11:53start to screw up right the 30s you know the longevity of your career and the Tigers wouldn't
11:59be on the hook for a single cent after this season correct 248-539-9797 we'll get some phone calls
12:07in
12:07the mix talking Pistons at 635 and John Marossi at 702 a special guest to talk some baseball get some
12:14of his thoughts on scoobal mcgonigal and the Tigers it's 97-1
