00:00Let's start following the 30-day visit breadcrumbs on your official home of the Cowboys.
00:08Good morning, Metroplex. I'm Sean Sharif next to RJ Choppy and Cowboys insider Bobby Belt.
00:14Roberto, who are they talking to?
00:16We got a few of them already. We have four that have been reported now.
00:20And I would say only one of these is like, yeah, we expected that name.
00:25The first one.
00:26I know the one where I was like, huh?
00:28Huh? I was on a couple of them.
00:31Mansoor Delane, cornerback, LSU.
00:34That makes sense.
00:35That's somebody that they would want to talk to,
00:38somebody that they'd want to be interested in,
00:39probably somebody who goes around where they pick.
00:42After that, it gets a little bit different.
00:45We've got Rene Conga from Louisville,
00:48who is projected to be an undrafted free agent, was not invited to the combine.
00:53And I assume this is just was not invited to the combine.
00:56So they got to figure out if he's even on their board because they need to find out a medical
00:59is what I would guess.
01:00So they're bringing him in to do medical.
01:03Next, Kamari Ramsey, a safety from USC who's projected to go in the third or fourth round.
01:09And then finally, and probably the most interesting one on the list,
01:13Indiana wide receiver, Omar Cooper Jr., who's expected to be a late first, early second round pick at receiver.
01:19And I don't know why.
01:21I mean, he was at the combine.
01:22I don't know unless they were doing a medical recheck or they had something specific they wanted there.
01:26I don't know why they would want to go use a visit up on him.
01:30But now they've got it.
01:32So they've got Omar Cooper, Kamari Ramsey, Renee Conga, and then the only player who seems like, oh, yeah, that
01:37makes sense.
01:38Monsoor delaying the cornerback from LSU.
01:39Those are four of their 30 visits at this point.
01:42But they will use these for not only just medicals.
01:45They've used these in the past to they could they could call in Arvel Reese.
01:50Why? You're not going to pick Arvel Reese.
01:52He's way ahead of where you're going to be.
01:53Yeah, but we'll interview him.
01:54We'll talk to him.
01:55And then subtly throughout the thing, we'll start finding out things we want to know about Sonny Stiles and Caleb
02:00Downs, too.
02:00Yeah, about whether they were really doing things on defense that we think they were doing.
02:03And how often are these used for like their second, third or fourth round projections versus I think when I
02:09hear these, I'm like, all right, these are first round.
02:10These are your first round options.
02:12That's it versus doing the homework on even the middle round.
02:15So in the past, they were pretty consistently the top of the draft guys that kind of shifted when McCarthy
02:22was here.
02:23And it was less like that was definitely the case when Garrett was here.
02:26But it shifted a little bit when McCarthy got here and it's continued now.
02:30Two years in a row with Brian Schottenheimer, but they will they've used these before.
02:36Sometimes, like you said, like it could be a middle round where they need to find out something medically where
02:40it's like, well, he would be a target of ours in the fourth round.
02:42We need to know about him.
02:44Or in some instances, they'll use it as this is recruiting time for a guy they know is not getting
02:50drafted, but somebody that they'll want to compete for an undrafted free agency.
02:54And they're using it almost as just like a pitch at times for some of these guys are just like,
02:59oh, check out the facility.
03:00And then when they go to sign, you know, undrafted free agents in six weeks, then they go, hey, you
03:05remember Star was nice and we really enjoyed having you here.
03:08You could you could see yourself here.
03:10And so they use it for a lot of different things.
03:12It's not just, hey, this is our top targets, but it's usually not three of the first four reported are
03:18like, yeah, I don't.
03:19I wouldn't think that either one of those would be a pick for them in the first round and the
03:23Indiana receivers projected where late first, early second.
03:26OK, so I mean, he's a good player.
03:28It's just I you don't have a second round pick.
03:30I don't have a second round pick.
03:32I don't think he's going to be there in your third.
03:33And if you picked him at 20, I think some people would be freaking out that that's what you used
03:37your capital trade down.
03:40Maybe candidate, maybe, maybe.
03:41But even still, I would be stunned if you're using any pick in the top 64 on offense.
03:48But I mean, it's I guess it's possible.
03:51And how often do these visits correlate with them taking one of those people or they try to throw some
03:57off the scent in years past?
03:58So in the past, they have absolutely been used for Jason, right?
04:03Like that was always Jason.
04:04It was 100 percent of the time.
04:05That was somebody they were interested in under McCarthy less consistently, but still was there.
04:11I don't know that they've ever used somebody.
04:13I had asked that one time about like, hey, do you guys ever use these to just kind of like
04:16throw some people off or do whatever?
04:19And somebody told me, they're like, we get 30 of those.
04:21We're not we're not.
04:23Yeah, we're not burning those on misdirection.
04:25We got to know.
04:26And so a lot of times I think it is as simple as I think in McCarthy and Schottenheimer, they
04:31get a handful of guys they like in the first round that they want to visit with.
04:34And then behind that, it's a lot of just logistical.
04:38We need to check off medical boxes.
04:39We need to find out about this guy.
04:41And they use them in that way.
04:42Do all these players do medical stuff while they're there?
04:46Can they refuse it?
04:48Well, I mean, I assume probably like I don't think they can just tie you down and do medical, but
04:54like showing up to the visit is the case.
04:57Yeah, that's what that's one of the things you're allowed to do as a team is that you are allowed
05:00to get medical from them there.
05:01We have a trade as the Kansas City Chiefs are sending a six round pick next year to the New
05:09York Jets for Justin Fields.
05:11If New York just released Fields, of course, they traded for or acquired Geno Smith.
05:16They would have had to eat ten million dollars in guaranteed money by trading him.
05:21They take on just seven of it.
05:23Kansas City will pay three.
05:25And Justin Fields now as Pat Mahomes insurance to start off the season.
05:31However, you define the term insurance.
05:33Well, yeah, I know.
05:34Right.
05:35But, you know, we just saw like for him to go there and for basically, you know, for a six
05:40round pick, you get the insurance from Mahomes.
05:42I don't know when Pat's going to start.
05:44Are they going to run him and Andy going to run some kind of single wing?
05:47Let's go some little.
05:48They need to do something different for Andy Reid's plays to work again.
05:52That's the truth.
05:53Who will have the ball?
05:54Your Andy Reid is by Josh Allen.
05:57But, like, Josh Allen, like, oh, I'm going to take every little thing.
06:01You've taken every jab you can.
06:02Yeah, except I have, like, a lot more argument to make because of this Chiefs offense over the past couple
06:09of years.
06:10And no one on TV will have the balls to say it.
06:13No one will dare be like, is Andy Reid the problem?
06:16Is Andy Reid an issue?
06:18No one's going to say it.
06:19No one's going to say it.
06:20But, you know, they don't really have a great backup.
06:24They had Chad Henney for a while.
06:26Yeah, I could not.
06:27Chase Daniel for a while or something like that.
06:29They had decent backups.
06:30They don't have.
06:31I can't even remember who their backup was last year.
06:34They don't have a great backup quarterback.
06:37This is, there's nothing wrong with this.
06:39You know, you just get Justice Fields and.
06:41They had Minshew.
06:43Oh, yeah, that's right.
06:44Oh, Minshew mania.
06:45Yeah, they are, this is definitely an insurance policy.
06:50Now, you'd like to say, like, I don't know how much of an insurance policy it is.
06:53I would say in terms of just prominence and for whatever reason, how many people around the league have just
06:59thought he's going to turn it around with Justin Fields, which is odd to me.
07:03Man, like, I have.
07:04He has never once in five years really given you an idea that, oh, yeah, he's going to be ready
07:10to go.
07:11He had like a two-game stretch, and one of those games was against us.
07:13What was the, they traded him to the Jets for, or traded him to Pittsburgh for what, like a fifth?
07:18Or like, Will was melting down.
07:20That's where we got the, I'm having a bad effing weekend came from, because he thought Justin Fields should have
07:23gone for like a second.
07:25No player in the NFL last year.
07:27I don't know who his PR is, but he has a tremendous agency because this guy gets propped up and
07:35treated with kid gloves more than any other bum that I know in the NFL.
07:40And that's what he is.
07:41He is a bum who can run a little bit at times.
07:44He's never come close to living up to expectations, yet he gets so much attention.
07:48Top 10 MVP, finalist in 2022.
07:51No, David Mooligata is his agent.
07:54Okay.
07:55So they've generally been pretty good at making sure their guys are maxed out.
08:00And you were thinking about Cowboy backup quarterbacks with this?
08:03I was just looking at like, you know, because they got a sixth, and they're going to give the fourth
08:09to last pick of the sixth round for him.
08:11That's what Kansas City gives.
08:13The Cowboys gave a fifth.
08:15So number 171, which is a comp five, right?
08:20174 for Joe Milton.
08:21They also get back a seventh, but it was like a 40-pick difference, 170-ish to 210.
08:27It's like a 40-pick difference.
08:29I think Milton's worth that.
08:30You think he's worth that much more?
08:32And is it simply the unknown?
08:34Yeah.
08:35It's just the lottery ticket.
08:36I think a lottery ticket is worth more than I know what Justin Fields is.
08:40He's a known commodity.
08:41And Milton, you've got to remember.
08:42We know what he is.
08:43Milton, you've got to remember.
08:44It was one year, and the only time anybody saw Milton on the field, like, he played well.
08:48Yeah, and so, yeah, I think Milton was absolutely, at the time, like, end of the fifth round,
08:53that's good value for a quarterback who's a freak athlete who's like, yeah, I mean, sure.
08:57That's a much better trade.
08:58I do not complain about the Joe Milton trade the same way I do the Trey Lance trade.
09:02That's a much better trade than the Trey Lance one.
09:05Cowboy fans not thrilled with Troy Aikman coming out and saying, yeah, I'm going to work with the Miami Dolphins
09:11just a little bit more.
09:12I'm going to have to sit down today, I guess, and listen to that whole two hours of that podcast,
09:17because he said enough stuff in it that it's popped a little bit.
09:21Troy Aikman had done a podcast interview recently, and that's where we got the clip of him talking about,
09:27I didn't like how I was portrayed in The Gambler, but this was on the Rodeo Time podcast,
09:32and he was talking about why he's never gotten into front office work and how, you know,
09:37maybe this Dolphins thing will be more than just a job search.
09:40It wasn't until my youngest graduated from high school back in 2021 that if I was going to pursue a
09:48front office position,
09:49that that would have been the time to do it.
09:51But when that rolled around, I was just getting ready to go to ESPN.
09:57I was really enjoying where I was in the broadcasting.
10:00I liked my life, and so I've stayed that route.
10:03Now, this year, the Dolphins reached out to me and asked if I would help them in their GM search
10:10and head coaching search
10:13and kind of caught me out of left field.
10:15I wasn't expecting that, but I dove into it and decided I would do it and thoroughly enjoyed it
10:24and felt like I was of some help.
10:26And, you know, where that might go, I'm not sure.
10:29I'm going to continue to work with them in some capacity.
10:32And so that's kind of scratched whatever itch I had when it came to being in the front office.
10:39Tom Brady has opened the floodgates of conflict of interest.
10:44It makes a ton of sense why you'd want to talk to somebody like Aikman.
10:48Like, if you were going to hire a GM search firm or whatever else,
10:52as somebody who he works all the games, he talks to all the people around the league pregame,
10:56he's a smart guy, he knows the sport, I understand why you would want to.
11:01I'm just stunned the league has allowed guys to do this, that they've allowed.
11:04I mean, that they've let Aikman, Brady, everybody continue to do this.
11:08Eventually, there's going to be enough guys going, well, I want to do it.
11:10I want to do it.
11:10The league's going to have to address it.
11:12They're going to have to do something about it.
11:13You know, Shaq, I guess no one cared.
11:15Shaq was like a part owner of the Kings.
11:18And he said they're doing broadcast work for TNT, but nobody cared.
11:22Could he name all the players on the Kings?
11:24No way.
11:25No chance, right?
11:26I think everybody just feels like with Shaq, like, I didn't even remember that.
11:29I feel like with Shaq, he might be like, Kings suck.
11:32Like, he wouldn't even like.
11:33Or D. Wade.
11:34Yeah.
11:34Like, Dwayne is tied into Utah.
11:37Right.
11:38So, what are the differences?
11:41What's the difference between Aikman and Brady?
11:43Obviously, Tom is.
11:44We care about football.
11:44Yeah.
11:45But between Aikman and Brady, obviously, Tom's an owner, but still, you're talking to teams
11:50every single week and working for one.
11:55The care level, the threshold for what you're willing to be upset about is much lower in
12:02football because it matters more.
12:03They did put rules, quote, unquote, in place for Brady.
12:08I wonder if, like, now if Aikman's saying, yeah, I'm going to continue.
12:10I wonder if the NFL goes, well, you've got to have those same ones.
12:12You can't sit in the production meetings anymore.
12:14Yeah.
12:15They should.
12:16Yeah.
12:16I mean, if it's to be consistent, they should do that.
