00:00all right so whatever you know big time sports figure in our town holds a press conference if
00:06we're not carrying it live we'd like to listen to it for you sift through it and bring you the
00:10most interesting stuff that was said in this case it's brad holmes general manager detroit lions
00:16yesterday he met with the media a couple of house cleaning issues they haven't finalized
00:20their big board yet which i think is interesting uh two is there's no update on the terry on
00:26situation so no huge surprise there right terry arnold yes uh and the whole what is it uh the
00:34the kidnapping charges of people he was associated with down in florida so those things get them out
00:40of the way there's nothing there he didn't say much about the fifth year options other than they're
00:44being discussed so that's yeah i think it's kind of interesting is the reporting on it was went both
00:51ways it was talking about you know picking up the fifth year extensions for uh the the two players
00:58were drafted in the first round jameer gibbs and and jack campbell uh and also talking about how they
01:04haven't had talks yet but they do still want to look at extending not only those players but laporta and
01:11branch which is more imminent because they're entering their last year here which i do find interesting to
01:18see what they decide to do what they could just simply agree to pick up the fifth year
01:22for both of those first round picks and you know let them play it out and then work on extension
01:28later
01:29um but the fourth year guys are the guys you know you really got to think about would you give
01:35an
01:35extension to brian branch or sam laporta and at this point i'm not ready to commit to either of those
01:41players yeah it certainly calls into question makes a tougher decision um all right but do you need a
01:46draft to tackle and an edge in the draft or can your free agent signees larry bornham and dj wanham
01:53start for you and do well here's what brad holmes said
02:05um
02:07and
02:11and
02:30they're kind of intriguing in that you know they they've done a decent job finding some
02:37diamonds in the rough over the years but you know i think it's smart not to lock yourself in to
02:43say
02:44yes in case the board doesn't fall your way which is what i really think is going on there
02:50i'm a little bit more encouraged by borum than want him but that's his belief and i mean at this
02:58point why do anything other than show faith in your guys and not sound desperate by the way yeah
03:03i mean i i think he's presenting the the best picture he can to the media that the reality is
03:09that they didn't have they weren't going to spend money that they had a budget they kept to that
03:15budget and you can agree or disagree that that's the budget they had to work with but that's the
03:21budget they decided to work with could they have freed up more money yeah they could have freed
03:24up more money they could have gone deeper with golf's contract to free up more they could have
03:28gone with one of the other players they extended and restructured their contracts to free up more
03:33money but this is the uh the model they're going after now so it is what it is but it
03:38certainly
03:38sounds like they're comfortable with with borum at at right tackle and putting sewell over on the left
03:44side and we'll see what that looks like okay uh next up the topic a topic of tackle came up
03:50again
03:50and somebody asked do you feel like you have a long-term need a tackle that could get addressed
03:55last in this draft here's what brad holmes said
03:59so
04:06so
04:12so
04:13so
04:14so
04:15so
04:18so
04:19so
04:20so
04:21so
04:21so
04:30he's so
04:31he's so vague
04:31he's very vague
04:34but
04:34he
04:36i would be shocked
04:39if they haven't put a little extra work in
04:42on the tackles
04:43when decker retired
04:46and given that it's a strength of this draft
04:50i think it only makes sense
04:52that they are pouring over tackle tape
04:54yeah
04:55and look he can
04:57wax poetic all he wants about borum
04:59the reality is he signed to a one-year deal
05:01yep
05:02so
05:03i think
05:03and kang had brought this point up a long time ago about
05:06with free agency
05:07that they would
05:09sign a tackle
05:10and free agency
05:11and still draft a tackle
05:13because
05:14they want to get him ready to go
05:16and it makes all the sense in the world
05:17i i would agree with that philosophy
05:19i don't know
05:19borum's the guy i would have
05:21looked at is
05:22okay he can do it
05:23but they say
05:23he can
05:24and he has
05:25and they like the tape that they see
05:26all right
05:28but i'm still drafting a tackle at 17
05:30if i can
05:30if one of my guys is there
05:32and
05:33when you start looking at the future of this team
05:35okay
05:35that's a five-year deal
05:36you got him for
05:37five years before you have to pay him
05:39big-time money
05:40now he gets first year
05:42or first round pick money
05:43which is good
05:44but it's not like
05:45you know free agent money
05:45and
05:46you start to think about
05:48penne sewell
05:49and you know
05:50how long his extension is for
05:52and when is that going to end
05:54and
05:54you don't want to have to pay two tackles
05:56an exorbitant amount of money
05:57well the best way to do that
05:58is to draft one of the first rounds
06:00you have him for five years
06:00and you don't have to pay him
06:01yep
06:01so
06:02then there was
06:03um
06:04i think it was
06:05Wojo
06:05asked him a question
06:06about targeting specific needs
06:08hey
06:08and
06:09here's what brad holmes had to say
06:37tellレイ they go have a gas
06:48she said
06:48is her
06:50or she said
06:50okay
06:54you know
06:56how are you
06:58going to be
06:59to ici
06:59here
07:01as well
07:02as to
07:03I can say
07:03it is
07:04and
07:05you know
07:05where
07:17so that that's his one of the reasons why he says he doesn't do it here's something we need to
07:21keep
07:21in mind and i do this too is i look at weaknesses and i want to address them in the
07:25draft what
07:27they're trying to do is win a super bowl they might say yeah borum isn't isn't a great starter
07:34but the player that i can get here i think takes my defense to an elite level that makes up
07:42for
07:42us not having a great starter somewhere else i think this player is so good he helps us win a
07:50football game more than the guy that at a position of need that we could take here so i'm going
07:56to
07:56roll with my marginal player over here because i think this player at another position helps
08:03me win more football games right now in the short term is that what you're saying or long term
08:10like i mean you know if you if you don't like any of the tackles don't take one right and
08:14you none of
08:15us would see here's what i got that's why i think he manipulates a draft that's why i think trading
08:19up
08:20is a real possibility my first thought that came to my mind hearing that cut about halfway through it
08:25i'm always fixated on what he said and that is you know he's lost sleep who did he reach for
08:32who's the guy who was asked to follow up and he he said i don't he doesn't what he said
08:38i don't i
08:39don't think i reach for anyone well then how does he know he loses sleep i don't know that's what
08:44i'm
08:44saying he would lose sleep if he did it but i mean we can look back in hindsight he didn't
08:50in the time
08:51when he took project martin he didn't think it was a reach when he took giovanni mano he didn't
08:57think it was a reach at the time hooker and hooker he didn't think it was a reach that round
09:01picks are
09:02really haunted isaac tesla he doesn't think there was a reach what he does lose sleep over a gator i
09:06think in my opinion is when he doesn't reach for his guy when he lets him slip by when he
09:11says i really
09:12want this guy how can i get him and he doesn't get him i think that's where he loses his
09:16sleep but he's
09:17not going to ever reach for a guy for because they need a position and he's he's been pretty
09:22upfront with that yeah i'm just saying he admitted that he lost sleep over some ads i'm just curious
09:27what what was going on there um and then if he says well i i didn't okay well it's i
09:33guess i'm just
09:34you know looking at the way that he stated it i i just to take it as a statement about
09:39not reaching
09:40for players of course why you don't want to reach for players because of positional need you don't want
09:45to do that um i think it's easier to do that later in the draft but you sure don't want
09:50to do that in
09:51the first few rounds uh final thing here from brad holmes and you heard this yesterday stoney asked
09:58the question but if you weren't listening yesterday we just played this one cut near the end of the
10:02show would you make an f them picks move here's what he said
10:24rest assured brad not very many people if any get mad at you for making too many f them picks
10:29moves
10:30i it's funny he it sounds like he has a different definition of f them picks and what like the
10:36rams
10:36think f them picks are or what we think the f them picks is i think we go around thinking
10:41the f them
10:42picks move is to trade first round picks for a nfl player not for a draft pick i think what
10:49brad thinks
10:49is f them picks move is is moving maneuvering around the draft because he's done it so much
10:54but maybe not necessarily with the first round pick although he's done it but throughout the i mean
11:01we've already cited several examples where he has moved maneuvered through the draft with third round
11:06picks all right we've got uh some feedback coming in here on national ex-spouse day
11:13people are texting about their ex-spouses oh boy and we're here for it let's go what do you got
