Did Jim and Jon like the Lions draft?
Transcript
00:03Good morning. Happy Monday. Jim Costa, John Jansen, Gov and Greg behind the glass. We'll
00:08get Heather Park back tomorrow. Got a busy sports weekend. The good of the Lions draft,
00:13the bad of the Pistons game and everything in between. Good morning. Good morning. How's
00:17it going, man? Good. It's good to see you on a Monday morning. Off and running. Yeah.
00:21How was the weekend? It was good. I didn't have to travel for the first time in a couple
00:25weeks. So yes, you were down. I finally mowed the grass, got a little yard work done, set
00:30out some of the patio furniture. Do you have to plug in your mower too? No, John. That's
00:35just the snowblower. Okay. Well, I mean, it's possible, but it was starting to look a little
00:41unsightly. Yeah. Well, good. Now, are you one that edges and weed whips or do you just get
00:48the mower as close as possible? You got, especially with fences, you got to get in there with the
00:51weed whip. Good for you. Thanks. I'm proud of you. Um, it was a beautiful weather weekend
00:58and I was a little bit, uh, chillier on Saturday, but, um, you know, Hey, you had a chance to
01:05go watch, uh, on senior day for Michigan rowing, uh, that over at Lake Belleville, that was a
01:11great day and, uh, a lot going on there. Uh, yesterday, same thing, got the yard mode, got
01:18some projects in the house. Uh, so it was a busy Sunday and, and watching the Tigers
01:25and listening to the Tigers, keeping an eye on the Tigers, because why would you keep an
01:31eye on anything in the NBA right now? It feels like it's just a no good, no fun. You're talking
01:37about the NBA or Jalen Duren? Um, well, I'm just talking about, uh, it's, we heard it and
01:43he just abbreviated, Hey, three teams with a three, one lead. And he just goes, boom,
01:49boom, boom. Well, none of them are surprises. Well, none of them are surprises and none of
01:55them are the Pistons. They couldn't be three in one right now, but they are down to one
02:00and it just is, it's been frustrating and disappointing. And I'm not sure if I'm more frustrated or if
02:07I'm more disappointed or disgusted could be all the three put a pin in at six 35, we'll
02:13get into the Pistons. Okay. 702. We're bringing back over react gyms where we can hit on the
02:19draft at large little Pistons, little Tigers, little NHL NBA playoffs. Let's start with the
02:25good from the weekend. I like what the lions did. I like this draft from Brad Holmes. I do
02:31to, uh, it was, I don't want to sit there and say it was excellent. We don't know if
02:38it's excellent. We don't know if it's bad. We won't know any of these until we get a chance
02:44to see. We're still trying to figure out if 25, like what's the quality of that draft? I
02:49think this is, it's one of those drafts where you're just looking at it going, it's
02:57not sexy, but it filled a lot of needs. And I think it's going to prove to be a draft
03:05where a lot of these guys have a lot of playing time and production, and it continues to go
03:13up throughout the course of their careers. They typically don't draft for need. And it
03:19just happened to work out this way is what Brad Holmes said, right? When you get, yeah,
03:24exactly. When you get to this point, you're not in your first or second or third year.
03:28You're not at the rebuild start. You're closer to contention in a title. You only have a few
03:32things that you need. And if you can get them in the draft, that's awesome. Offensive line,
03:39defensive line, and five of the picks coming on the defensive side of the ball. Just first
03:44blush. You feel good about that. No, I can't speak to how all their careers are going to
03:48play out, but I liked the direction they went in. This is an easy draft to follow along and
03:55root for. The word I would use to describe this draft is identity. They kind of lost their identity
04:02in 2025. The whole grit and moving people and imposing their will. They had to get back to
04:08the trenches. The first picks the offensive line. It feels like this off season has been about
04:14getting that identity back on the offensive line, getting back the ability to maul people,
04:19move people, impose their will, and dominate the line of scrimmage. And then the rest of the way,
04:24essentially, it was defense, including John, big headline, an edge player, someone who will
04:30impact the quarterback that they used a meaningful pick on. So yeah, it's easy to look at that draft
04:36and say, I like what they did. I am not going to disagree with that at all. Now they took
04:43a couple
04:43of Wolverines, so I know you're pumped. Yeah. And I'm pumped because some that we had talked
04:49about. Now we didn't bring up Derek Moore. He was mocked in a couple of, of mocks to the
04:55lions. And I said, Hey, this would be great. I think it is. It's nice to see that since 2022,
05:02they have taken an edge in the first two rounds. And now all of a sudden we're looking at it
05:08going, well, you know, no one's going to look at Derek Moore and go, that is Cam Jordan
05:15this year. Okay. It's, it's, he's not, he's going to be a quality defender that is going
05:22to hopefully improve throughout the course of the year. And in years two and three be
05:27much better. That's why he's a second round pick versus a first round pick. Jimmy Rolder
05:33is a guy that I brought up especially, and it was more because of the need for depth
05:38at the linebacker position. Now I know that, you know, you, you see depth charts and all
05:42of a sudden, Hey, they slot these guys in, they got them behind, uh, Rodrigo. I think
05:47there's a chance that he could compete for a starting spot unless they add a proven linebacker,
05:54maybe somebody that's not on a roster right now. I don't think they'd make any, I don't
05:57think they make any substantial trades, but I think he could be competing for a starting
06:02job next to Jack Campbell. I think this was high quality. And from what we're hearing,
06:11it's okay. I'm not going to sit there and say Dan Campbell type guys. It looks like high
06:16character guys. I think it was a sterling draft. The first two picks are guys that have played
06:22a lot of football. I think there's something to be said for that too, that they want guys
06:25who they feel a certainty with, especially given what's on the line and what's at stake and
06:30that these guys need to be plug and play contributors. So everybody knows Blake Miller.
06:34We highlighted it on Friday, 54 career starts. Derek Moore played a lot of football at Michigan
06:38and was incredibly productive. Uh, you look at 10 sacks his last year, but he was a guy
06:43that was a six TFLs, his sophomore, junior, and then 10 in his senior year, played a lot
06:49of football. He had a sack in their college football playoff matchup with Alabama in that
06:53game that went to overtime, the semifinal game. He has a track record, right? So I think
06:59they feel better about leaning on these guys to contribute because they saw them play a
07:03lot of football. Yeah. Especially those guys. Now, when you start talking about, uh, Jimmy
07:07Rolder, only a year really of only a year, but could have been a lot more. Now here's the
07:13question about Jimmy Rolder and I brought it up is he only has one year because there was
07:18always a reason prior to that where he was hurt. Now, what does that injury status mean
07:25moving forward? What we'll find out. I think their thought is we're going to get him with
07:30upside because of it. Oh yeah. There's no question. You get there's, there's a large
07:34upside with Jimmy Rolder, but there's always a risk, right? If you have a guy that that was
07:37hurt for three or four years of college football and had one year of, of production. Well, why
07:43was he hurt? What's going on now? What you do have is you have guys that, okay, here's
07:49what I have to do to make sure that I'm not hurt. Here's what I have to do. When I
07:52have
07:53aches and pains, they learn those things and hopefully they find ways to manage those or
08:00prevent those and be on the field more. What was your favorite pick that the lions made?
08:05Well, I'm between Blake Miller and Jimmy Rolder. I mean, I'm a big fan of Jimmy Rolder. I said
08:13it the last couple of weeks. I texted you because that's a name that you had brought up like
08:17just a dozen times leading up to the draft. He's it. So obviously when I'm around the players at
08:24Michigan, he's a great kid. He really is. He's got a high football IQ and what would you miss a
08:31lot
08:31of time? The risk is, Hey, you're just there working out. You're in the rehab, but you don't
08:36pay attention to what's going on. That's not him. He is, is a guy who played in, in similar systems,
08:43but with different coordinators, different voices and picked everything up, was able to be
08:49productive when he finally found a chance to get on the field. And I mentioned it at the beginning
08:53of last year in that locker room or that, that linebacker room last year, I thought there were
09:00a number of NFL caliber talents. Now, Ernie Hausman, I don't think he got drafted. Did he? No,
09:07I don't think he got drafted. And I'm not even sure he got signed as an undrafted free agent,
09:11but some issues going on there. He's an NFL talent. We saw Jay Sean Barham get Dallas get
09:17drafted. Cole Sullivan, who transferred to Oklahoma, will eventually be probably a second
09:24or third round linebacker pick. And then you've got Jimmy Rolder. I thought there were four guys
09:27in that room that we're going to be playing on Sundays. And now we'll see if Ernie Hausman
09:33can work his way back into the good graces of the football gods. But, um, I think he eventually
09:36will twitch comment. The second round and fourth rounds were a little surprising. I didn't hate
09:41them, but they both seem to be reaches to me. So he's talking about more and Rolder. So the reason
09:47that at least it's being reported that they traded up to get Derek more was because Baltimore
09:54picked the pick after their, their, their trade, they wanted to jump because they felt that Baltimore
10:00was going to take, um, Derek more and explain the connection. Obviously. Yeah. Jesse mentors
10:06knew that the new head coach, he was a DC. He knows extremely well. What, what Derek more
10:11can do. They said this was their top guy. They didn't think their top guy would make it one
10:15more pick. Yep. They burned all of a fourth rounder, which was an extra fourth rounder, right?
10:21The trade they made for receiver on day three, they burned the extra sixth rounder, right? Like
10:27guys, they weren't going to play nine rookies this season. So the idea that they burned extra
10:32picks on day three to go up and target specific guys they liked, I'm never going to fault a
10:36team for that. Right. And if you're looking at that, that extra six that they did not have
10:41anymore, what's that guy going to fill out the practice squad and hopefully maybe by the
10:45end of the year, if somebody gets hurt, he can come in and you know, if it's a wide receiver,
10:48catch one ball or just fill up a role. No, it's, you could fill the practice squad out
10:54with a lot of different guys. They're going to be cut around the league, but you want to
10:59try and get as many productive players as possible. And they did that. The other pick
11:04we haven't highlighted. It might be my favorite pick. Keith Abney, the second corner
11:09out of Arizona state third round grade on a lot of these consensus boards. They get them
11:13in the fifth smaller corner, which is why I think he fell, but ball skills, physicality,
11:18playing the run a meek Robertson. Like I like it. I'm going to fill that nickel position
11:24certainly helps there. No two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97. We'll take some
11:29of your feedback on Brad Holmes draft. You got one word to describe it. I said, identity
11:33it's 97 one.
11:34You got one word to describe it. You got one word to describe it. You got one word to
