Is this an indication in what the Lions want to do in the 2026 NFL Draft?
Transcript
00:00But first, it's time for our daily Detroit Lions NFL pre-draft news aggregate thingy.
00:08All right, so here's the very latest on the Lions.
00:10We start with an updated list of pre-draft visits put out by CBS Sports.
00:15What do you make of this list?
00:17Here's who they brought in.
00:18Wide receiver Demarcus Lacey from Marshall.
00:21Defensive lineman Tyree West from Tennessee.
00:24Defensive tackle Caleb Banks from Florida.
00:27Linebacker Jimmy Rolda, Michigan.
00:29Defensive lineman Jay Hunt from Cincinnati.
00:32And defensive back Malcolm DeWalt the fourth, or the third rather.
00:35No, the fourth from Akron.
00:37Gator, what do you make of this list of players that they have brought in?
00:41I think it's an interesting mix.
00:43I think the name that stands out is Caleb Banks, the defensive tackle.
00:49And though I don't think he'd be somebody they'd look at in the first round,
00:52is he somebody that I think might be there at 50?
00:56And would they jump on him because he's very talented?
01:00Some people have been the first round.
01:02Could this be the next in line along what they'd be for with Brian Branch and Sam Laporte,
01:08getting those guys in the second round that also had like first round grades?
01:11Does Caleb Banks have that grade?
01:12And if he's there at 50, how can they let him pass them by when they've got some issues on
01:18the defensive line?
01:19Kang, what do you make of this list of players?
01:21I think the list matters because we know the Lions like to meet with their guys before they draft them,
01:26right?
01:26It seems like their history is they've met and did like one-on-ones or something with all the players
01:30they've drafted.
01:30I agree with you, Gator, as far as who stands out.
01:33Defensive tackle Caleb Banks stands out because they just drafted a defensive tackle in the first round last year.
01:41I know they're going to probably lose DJ Reader this year, but maybe this is the second round guy.
01:46And I don't think, by the way, they wait till 50.
01:48They really like Banks.
01:49They're going to have to move up in the second to get him.
01:51And they've shown in the past they will be aggressive when they have a first round grade on a guy.
01:55Banks is the guy to watch out from this list.
01:56What stands out to me is that all but one of them are defensive players.
02:01And I think that might be indicative of how this draft may go.
02:05In fact, three of them are defensive linemen.
02:08So, you know, based upon what this team's strengths and weaknesses have been,
02:12and none of these guys are first-rounders.
02:15So first-rounder, it's starting to line up, right?
02:17Take the tackle in the first round and come back and just load up on defense the rest of the
02:21draft.
02:22Could very well be.
02:23The other name I find interesting there is Jimmy Rolder from Michigan.
02:26As a linebacker, this would be a guy.
02:29I mean, if you're going to ask me which guy do I think out of this group of players, will
02:32they draft?
02:34I got a hanker or at least a hunch that I think Jimmy Rolder is the guy.
02:37That they can get, like, the fifth round and that's who they take as a linebacker.
02:41Next up, Benjamin Raven of MLive.
02:43Today did positional breakdowns and he does them on a daily basis.
02:46Today did quarterbacks.
02:48One of his conclusions, and it's rather obvious but stated nonetheless,
02:52the Lions don't need to draft a quarterback.
02:54But if they do, there are a number of mid- to late-round prospects that could interest them.
02:58Day two and day three prospects include Garrett Nussmeyer from LSU, Carson Beck from Miami,
03:03Cade Klubnick from Clemson, Drew Aller from Penn State, and Cole Payton from North Dakota State.
03:08Other late-round fits.
03:10Talon Green from Arkansas.
03:11Haynes King from Georgia Tech.
03:13Jalen Daniels from Kansas.
03:14Any of those guys interest you as a mid- to late-round pick?
03:19Cole Payton does.
03:21Interesting.
03:22Nodak State.
03:23I'm a fan of Nodak State.
03:25I just think it's a program that knows how to win football games and they do it.
03:29And good size, 6'3", 233 pounds.
03:33He had a hell of a season last year.
03:35This is a guy who completed 72% of his passes last year for 2,700 yards, 16 touchdowns, only
03:424 picks.
03:43Not only that, he ran for 777 yards, almost a 6-yard average, and 13 more touchdowns.
03:50There's a lot there.
03:51He's got a guy who can throw the ball very accurately and also knows when it's time to tuck the
03:56ball and take off and go.
03:58And sounds like a guy in short-yarded situations is a real threat to hang on to the ball.
04:03And that's something that's completely different than what the Lions have right now, the quarterback position.
04:08Just like a little change up here.
04:09Kang, what do you make of this list?
04:11Is there anybody that might interest you?
04:12Yeah, Drew Aller would be the guy for me.
04:14Obviously, his career at Penn State wasn't as what he expected it to be.
04:18But with that being said, this is about the professional football league.
04:20And I think for the NFL, Drew Aller, he's got the prototypical size for an NFL quarterback.
04:266'5", big guy, make all the throws, as they say, strong arm.
04:30Maybe he just needed better offensive talent around him and better coaching.
04:33I think Drew Aller would be a guy with really high ceiling.
04:35Interesting.
04:36So, I, like Gator, am intrigued by Cole Payton.
04:40I'm also intrigued because he was a guy that the Lions met with in Indianapolis, according to reports.
04:46Bit of a wild card because there's not a lot of film on him and that he only started for
04:51one year at North Dakota State.
04:53But then all the reasons you cited, I feel like this is a high upside as a potential backup quarterback.
05:00And I do think Detroit needs to explore other options other than Teddy Bridgewater, who feels like long on the
05:08tooth, out of the league and coaching, comes back.
05:11I loved Teddy Bridgewater as a backup in the past.
05:14But I have to wonder if that ship has sailed a little bit.
05:17Now, is handing it over to an inexperienced rookie makes sense?
05:21Maybe not, but this might be more of a long play than a short play.
05:25All right, next up, NFL.com.
05:27Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah and the Move the Sticks podcast, they've talked about how scouts will stand around the
05:34table and, or stand on the table, rather, and scream about guys that they think will outperform their draft status.
05:40They call them Red Star guys.
05:42So, these are basically sleepers.
05:44Do you have what they call a Red Star guy, that if you were a scout and the Lions invited
05:50you into the draft room, that you would stand on the table and say, this guy is better than the
05:55draft projection of a, somewhere outside the first round?
05:59I got two guys that stand out to me.
06:01I don't know if you wanted the two, but I'm going to give you two.
06:03My first one is, is edge rusher, Danny Dennis Sutton from Penn State.
06:08I love this guy.
06:09Great size, 6'5", 265.
06:12He's got a massive RAS score.
06:13I know you're big on the RAS score, well into the nines on that one.
06:18He's got eight and a half sacks each of the last two seasons at Penn State.
06:22He's a menace.
06:23I really like him.
06:24The other guy I like is Eli Raritan.
06:27He's a tight end from Notre Dame.
06:29Notre Dame seems to put out some pretty good tight ends.
06:31He's got a good size at 6'6", 245.
06:34Loves to block.
06:35Also a high RAS score guy.
06:38I think he'd be a real nice piece to have if perhaps they have to move on from a tight
06:43end.
06:44Sometime soon.
06:45Kang, your thoughts?
06:46Why stop now, guys?
06:48Jake Slaughter, center Florida.
06:50He's anywhere from the second to fourth round.
06:52They're seeing him.
06:53So I would stand on the table.
06:55This guy is going to outperform his draft status.
06:57No matter where he gets drafted, he's going to be in the league for 9 to 10 years as your
07:01center.
07:01Because high character guy, physical guy, film room guy.
07:05Sounds like a line to me, guys.
07:07Center from Florida, Jake Slaughter.
07:08I have two guys that I was standing on the table for a month ago, two months ago.
07:13But I feel like both their draft stock is moving up and I'm not sure they qualify anymore.
07:18One is Jacob Rodriguez.
07:19My draft crush on him is approaching Campbell proportions.
07:22And the linebacker from Texas Tech, I'm starting to think he might sneak into the first round.
07:28Same thing with our Mason Thomas, the edge rusher from Oklahoma, who's small.
07:31And that's why he gets downgraded.
07:34But the film doesn't lie and the numbers are there.
07:37But the Lions emphasize film.
07:40Nobody's got this guy in the first round.
07:42And another player that probably size hurts him.
07:44But if you watched Indiana football, cornerback D'Angelo Pons made plays all over the field, jumped the routes, was
07:53a big-time hitter.
07:54And he just looks to me like a guy screams Detroit Lions.
07:58So that would be my Red Star guy.
08:01Finally, Chad Reuter, NFL.com, has a mock with trades.
08:06And in his mock, he's got Brad Holmes moving up four spots from 17 to 13, giving up a fifth
08:17-rounder this year and a third-rounder next year.
08:21Those two picks go to the Rams and the pick at 17.
08:25And the Lions, on the clock at 13, select Spencer Fonu, tackle from Utah.
08:31Would you make this deal?
08:34I don't think I would, me personally, because I think there's talent to that tackle position.
08:39If you wait to 17, you're going to get, maybe at worst, it's Caden Proctor.
08:44And I actually like him.
08:46I know John Jansen doesn't like the fact that he's as big as he is.
08:49And there's concern with weight.
08:51Can he keep weight off?
08:52Is he dedicated enough?
08:53I got that.
08:54That's something you can take care of in an individual meeting.
08:56You'll have a better idea about that.
08:59But I think that's too high of a price to pay just to move up four spots unless you absolutely
09:04love it.
09:05Now, if they do it, it's because they absolutely love the guy and they think his head and shoulders better
09:08than everybody else that's available.
09:10So, you know, I'll trust Brad Holmes that he knows what to do when it comes to the first round.
09:14When he's maneuvered in the first round, he's done pretty well with that.
09:17But me personally, I wouldn't.
09:19I think Monroe Freeling might be there for him.
09:21Caden Proctor is there for him.
09:23I'd like those guys.
09:24In this mock, Freeling is gone for the purposes of just so you know.
09:28Can you?
09:28Would you make this deal?
09:29I would make the deal because I think there's going to be a run on tackles.
09:31And I think you're going to have to get aggressive to get your tackle.
09:34And if they identify Fano as the guy, then you make the deal.
09:37And by the way, there's your starting tackle.
09:39I don't feel comfortable with Boreham as a starting tackle as much as they do.
09:42So I would make this deal.
09:43And they've made a big deal before the Rams and the Lions.
09:46So they'll do it again.
09:47True.
09:47You know what I like about this?
09:48And I do like the trade.
09:50I like that Brad Holmes isn't going to let the board dictate who the best player available
09:54is at 17.
09:55He's actually marrying BPA with position of need by moving up in this mock.
10:02Malinoa is gone and Monroe Freeling is gone.
10:04If he's moving up to take a tackle, that's because he's like, okay, I'm not going to do
10:09BPA at 17 and lose out on my guy.
10:12I'm going to move up where I can do BPA.
10:14And it helps the team in terms of position of need.
10:18I think that's manipulation that helps you get the guy that you want at the position of
10:22need.
10:23Well, it tells me that he would think there's big separation between Fano and Caden Proctor
10:28or Max Ahanacher.
10:30Those are guys that would be available.
10:31And if you think there's that big of a gap, then okay, then you go for it.
10:35Incidentally, kind of interesting because Chad Roeder did five rounds here.
10:39In the fourth round, he's got the Lions taking Logan Fano, his brother, an edge rusher from
10:46Utah.
10:46So he's got Fano and Fano coming to Detroit.
10:49And in the fifth round, he's got the Lions taking Cole Payton, quarterback, North Dakota
10:54State.
10:55There you go.
10:56So there it is.
10:57That's the latest on the Lions and the draft aggregated today for you here on Carson Anderson
11:02on 97.1.
