Fans are starting to get irritated with Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes.
Transcript
00:00All right, it's Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
00:03Look, it's kind of a disappointing day when a player at a position of great need
00:09gets traded from one NFL team to another NFL team
00:11for what appears to be a reasonable price in your organization.
00:15The team that you cover and the team that people here in Detroit love
00:19doesn't make that move.
00:21Look, it's a frustrating day because that feels like a trade
00:28that would have made a ton of sense in Detroit.
00:29And based upon the information we have available now,
00:32I feel like Brad Holmes really, really blew it here.
00:36And, you know, I'm at the start of the show saying I'm turning in my Brad Bach card,
00:41and I am.
00:42I mean, this is the faith that's been eroded because that is a –
00:48I mean, it's a move that seems to make a ton of sense.
00:50Are you ready to get back to the calls?
00:52Yeah.
00:52Okay.
00:54Let's go to Keith and Romeo.
00:55You're on 97.1.
00:56Hello, Keith.
00:57Hey, guys.
00:58You know, I'm pretty blunt, so I'll be direct on this.
01:02Brad, there was no way Brad was going to trade for him.
01:05We know that.
01:06That's his history.
01:07This guy only wants to say F those picks during draft day,
01:12not for a proven commodity.
01:14Joey Porter's a proven commodity, and he wasn't willing to give up a second and a sixth to get it.
01:20Let's face it, with Dallas, that's really a third and a seventh because they're not going to be picking early
01:27in the rounds either.
01:29This is –
01:29They might with the second.
01:31They might with the second because they're looking at losing a lot of players to free agency.
01:36Getting a second-round pick two years from now, that could be really a shrewd move by Pittsburgh.
01:41Well, see, and that's the other thing.
01:43So Brad doesn't – and Brad doesn't look at – he's not there to get us over the hump.
01:48If he can't do it with the draft picks, he's not going to take a chance.
01:51And that costs us, I really believe – I'm sorry, going back to the San Francisco championship game,
01:58that season we had a chance to get two defensive ends that sure would have been nice to have during
02:03that game against San Francisco.
02:05One went to San Francisco.
02:07The other went to Chicago.
02:08They gave up a second round and a third round pick, those two teams.
02:12And, yes, it was only a rental, but they would have gotten a third-round compensatory pick if they had
02:18lost a player.
02:19And so Brad just wouldn't do what's necessary.
02:22I'm sorry.
02:23It's time for him to go.
02:24Oh, hold on, hold on, Keith.
02:27Hold on, Keith, Keith, Keith, Keith, Keith, you'd fire him today.
02:32Yes.
02:33It's inexcusable.
02:34We're not going to get there with him.
02:37His picks have been terrible in the drafts recently.
02:40We're not going to get there with him because he's not willing to do what he can't do.
02:43Do you think, Keith, if they fired him today, people around the NFL, like people that cover the league,
02:47people that have a national perspective would go, well, that's totally justifiable?
02:52Or do you think they'd say, what the hell did the Lions just do?
02:55You know, what I'm saying is he's not there to get us to the Super Bowl.
02:58He's not going to vary from his plan.
03:01He's like Iserman.
03:02Iserman wasn't going to vary from his plan.
03:04This guy's not going to vary.
03:05You've got to go all in when you've got the chance.
03:08All right, Keith, thank you.
03:10Look, I'm pissed at Brad, and I'm going to really question some of what he's going to do.
03:18If the Lions announced that Brad Holmes was fired today, the NFL would go, well, did he insult the owner?
03:29The rest of the NFL would be shocked.
03:33Shocked.
03:34Yeah, but maybe less so today than what they were a year ago.
03:40Yeah, but.
03:41I mean, there's been some writing on the wall with doing some things to improve this team.
03:45I'm disappointed, too.
03:46It hasn't been done.
03:47But that's not a reasonable take.
03:49I'm not saying firing is a reasonable take.
03:50I'm saying that I think that his job that he's done over the last year, the last calendar year, leaves
03:59a lot to be desired.
04:00Yeah, you can be in.
04:01I mean, I'm starting to question.
04:30Mm-hmm.
04:31Really good draft selection for them on the offensive line.
04:35Skylar Gill-Howard looks like that's a pretty good and astute draft pick, and the jury's out on a lot
04:41of the other picks for sure.
04:43He hasn't been perfect, and nobody is.
04:45But there have been misses, and that draft that they had here in Detroit was a monster miss of a
04:51draft, particularly with those first two picks.
04:53Yeah, well, I mean.
04:55Unless Rakestraw turns it around.
05:14Unless Rakestraw turns it around.
05:15And Mahogany's starting for them, and they're all from that draft.
05:20But I do wonder a little bit, did they not make this trade because of the 20 pass set plays
05:29that Ennis Rakestraw had?
05:31Well, the 20 coverage snaps he had?
05:34I hope not.
05:35I hope not, too.
05:36That feels like a...
05:37Wasn't there a story written yesterday, and yesterday's paper may have been from Tuesday night.
05:41I think it was in the free press.
05:42They had a story about Rakestraw, and does this help to alleviate some of the concerns we have now?
05:49I don't know.
05:50It just...
05:51We're a long way away from feeling comfortable.
05:54I just want to see him standing upright and ambulatory when the game is over.
05:59And not hurt.
06:01But if he...
06:03I would feel like it would be unwise to say that Ennis Rakestraw's 20 coverage snaps in this past game
06:13were a reason not to trade for Joey Porter Jr.
06:16And I don't believe that that's the case.
06:20248-539-9797 here are the texts.
06:23I no longer believe Brad Holmes is trying to win a Super Bowl.
06:25I honestly don't believe any Detroit GM is trying to win it all in any of the four major sports.
06:29It's from an unnamed texter.
06:32No, I will say this.
06:33You don't like the way they're trying to do it.
06:36They'll all tell you that they are motivated by winning a championship, and they will all believe it.
06:41They aren't...
06:42They all don't...
06:43You don't like the way they're doing it, but they're trying to do it in a different way.
06:47Yeah.
06:47So here's from the free press story from a couple days ago, Dave Burkett.
06:51The Lions could be in the market for secondary help before November's trade deadline, but they plan to get a
06:56longer look at one of their developing young cornerbacks first.
06:59Rakestraw made his season debut as the Lions' number three corner in last week's win over the Jets, and Coach
07:03Dan Gamble said that Rakestraw played well enough to have a bigger role going forward.
07:10I think part of the problem with this whole thing is that this trade was made last night after three
07:15weeks in the NFL.
07:17Had this had some more legs, lasted another three weeks or so, maybe the Lions get in on it and
07:22are a little more hard and heavy.
07:23Right now, they're still afraid to pull the trigger.
07:26All right, 248-539-9797, big swing taken by another NFL team, 97-1.
