Who was Brad Holmes trying to trade up for?
Transcript
00:03Michigan's schedule came out at the same time.
00:08They got Michigan State, Ohio State, and Minnesota in home-and-home.
00:12Everyone else one time.
00:14Big Ten released the basketball schedule today.
00:18Okay, so we said we'd get to a mystery here.
00:21Wait, but you think it's important to get out the national champion schedule?
00:28They released both the schedules.
00:30Okay, man, okay.
00:32So here we go.
00:34This is from the Lions mystery.
00:37The Giants released a video of their general manager, Joe Shane,
00:46on the phone before they made their second-round pick.
00:50And he's talking to a team about making a trade.
00:54The team he's talking to about making the trade,
00:59has picks 118, 128, and 157.
01:06And they were going to offer those picks for the Giants' pick at 37.
01:16So the conversation is taking place when 36, the Houston Texans, are on the clock.
01:24Actually, Vegas was on the clock.
01:25They traded it to Houston.
01:27So it's the 36 pick is being made.
01:29Giants are sitting there at 37.
01:31They have a player they want.
01:32If that player goes, they're going to trade the pick to the team that has 118, 128, and 157,
01:38which we know is the Lions.
01:40Here's how the conversation went down from the Giants' side.
01:44And this is Joe Shane.
02:13So they made the pick, and they didn't take the offer.
02:16Now, what isn't clear here, and Kang, you saw the whole thing.
02:20Was it just for two-fourths and a fifth, or was it the Lions' second-round pick plus two-fourths
02:25and a fifth?
02:26In the video, that's all he says.
02:29Okay?
02:30So I, you know...
02:32So the Lions would have got 37.
02:34Do the draft chart value thing and see if that adds up.
02:37At least within the, you know, if it's close enough.
02:39Yeah.
02:40Here's the question.
02:43Who do you think the Lions were trying to get?
02:46This is the mystery.
02:48Who do you think the Lions were trying to get with the pick at 37?
02:54Now, who they ended up taking at 44 was Derek Moore.
02:57It could be they just wanted to trade up and make sure that they got Derek Moore.
03:03Seems kind of unlikely that they would trade up to 37 to take Derek Moore, but you never know.
03:12So if you look at the players that went between 37 and 44, I'll start with Kang so he can
03:23get it out there.
03:24Kang, who do you think they were trying to trade up for at 37 to make that pick at the
03:30top of the second round
03:31when they offered two-fourths and a fifth for the Giants' pick at 37?
03:35Well, obviously, Doug, they were going to go with Miller time.
03:38Kristen Miller, defensive tackle from Georgia, who I thought they were going to take in the second round.
03:44Obviously, because he was still available when they had allegedly tried to move up to 37.
03:49So if you missed it, Kang had predicted going into the second round that they would get Kristen Miller,
03:55who went, Kristen Miller, who went two picks before the Lions picked.
04:00So you are speculating that what you predicted is exactly what they were trying to do to move up to
04:0537.
04:06Damn you, Giants.
04:08But yeah, that would be...
04:09But you're right, Doug.
04:11It could have been for Derek Moore, who they end up selecting anyways.
04:13Because we all know that Brad Holmes can get ultra-aggressive during the draft.
04:18And according to that video, he was trying to get ultra-aggressive once again.
04:24I think it's obvious he was going after, who could it be, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez out of Texas Tech.
04:33That must have been what it was, right?
04:36Right?
04:37Well, I mean, I have a different opinion, Doug.
04:40I think they were going to try to trade up to get Trayden Stooks, the safety out of Arizona.
04:47This is great.
04:4838 to the Raiders.
04:49This is great because these are all names that got thrown around by us on the day leading into the
04:56second round, second and third round.
04:59The Lions didn't have a third-round pick, tried to get some extra capital in the second round.
05:09Stooks, Miller, Rodriguez, all those players went between, and I think that's pretty much the three guys that we coveted,
05:18all went between 37 and 44.
05:21I mean, is it possible Cassius Howell was one of those guys that was an edge rusher?
05:25Speed edge rusher out of Texas A&M?
05:27Possible.
05:29And then it became, I think, kind of obvious because they were thinking that Baltimore was going to take an
05:34edge rusher at 45.
05:37And they valued Derek Moore more than Zion Young, so they got ahead of Baltimore so they could do that.
05:43Well, and look, I mean, the Ravens and Jesse Minter, who's their head coach, that had coached Derek Moore in
05:50Michigan.
05:50Makes all the sense.
05:51It makes a sense that they were going after him, but the players that went, Colton Hood was the corner
05:56out of Tennessee.
05:57Now I feel like we're going to be watching Colton Hood who went 37, Trayton Stooks who went 38, Denzel
06:02Boston, the wide receiver, who they weren't going to do that.
06:06R. Mason Thomas.
06:07That was the guy who was highly regarded.
06:08That could have been a player, an edge rusher out of Oklahoma that seemed to have, did he meet with
06:13them?
06:13He met with them in Indy, right?
06:16Cassius Howell, the edge rusher out of Texas A&M, went 41.
06:19Kristen Miller, defensive tackle out of Georgia, went 42.
06:22And Jacob Rodriguez, linebacker out of Texas Tech, went 43.
06:26And the Lions at 44 actually took Derek Moore.
06:29Do you think any of the reporters will ask him about this now that it's out there?
06:32And you think Brad Holmes is upset that it's out there?
06:35Like, Giants, what are you doing, man?
06:36Now everyone knows, you know.
06:38Well, they better hang on to this because I don't know if Brad Holmes is going to speak again anytime
06:41soon.
06:42Well, they can hang on to it.
06:44I think they can do that, Gator.
06:46Hey, you never know when he sits down for a podcast all of a sudden.
06:50You never know.
06:51Do I think he'll say anything?
06:52No, I don't.
06:53I don't think it's his style.
06:55Well, if he's pressed on, hey, who are you looking at?
06:57And you think he'll just kind of plead the fifth on that?
06:59Like, hey.
07:00I think he'll avoid the question.
07:04Or he'll say Derek Moore.
07:06He could.
07:07I mean, he could.
07:09We were prepared to take him at 37 if we can move up there.
07:15Is that your Brad Holmes?
07:16I don't know.
07:16It's weak.
07:17Dude, it sounds like a Cleveland from Family Guy.
07:21He's got some Cleveland from Family Guy, though.
07:23He does.
07:25Cleveland is more.
07:27Who's Rod Wood?
07:30What if Quagmire were the GM of the...
07:32Unemployed shortly.
07:33What if Quagmire were the GM of the Lions?
07:36Giggity.
07:36I can't do a Quagmire.
07:39But, yeah, I think this is something that I would love to have answered.
07:43But you're never going to get it.
07:44What the answer you're going to get is, yeah, we value Derek Moore very much.
07:48And if he's going to admit that the Lions are the team that was going to try to move up
07:52and take him,
07:53yeah, we were prepared to take him higher in the draft.
07:56We were really fortunate that he lasted until 44 and we were able to trade up to get him.
08:01That's what he's going to say.
08:02The truth is it was probably Kristen Miller.
08:04Let's be honest.
08:05It was probably Kristen Miller.
08:06Why?
08:07Just because of Kane's track record?
08:08Just because he's the Brad Holmes whisperer, and it was probably Kristen Miller.
08:12I'm going to ask Holmes and say, don't say anything if it was Kristen Miller.
08:18Don't call into the show.
08:19If it was Kristen Miller, don't call into the show.
08:21If it were, that's right.
08:24In the next 10 minutes.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Don't call into the show in the next 10 minutes, Brad, and then we'll know.
08:29What's the phone number?
08:29Brad, it's 248-539-9797.
08:32We can email him.
08:34Oh, right, right.
08:35All we do have the email address, which is?
08:37B underscore homie at DetroitLions.com.
08:40It's DetroitLion.com.
08:41That's right.
08:42Detroit Lion.
08:42That's a mistake many people make.
08:44Right, right.
08:44They throw the S at the end.
08:46B underscore homie at DetroitLion.com.
08:51I hope David does well.
08:53I do, too.
08:54We haven't heard from David in a long time.
08:56All right, so there it is.
08:57Great mystery.
08:58We'll probably never know the answer to.
08:59Oh, we know.
09:00Do you see the numbers?
09:03Lions announced the numbers of the new players.
09:05I saw those yesterday, and I thought one thing is interesting, not the number, but the fact
09:12that Ennis Rakestraw has changed his number for a third time.
09:18I think he's going to wear number two this year.
09:20He's played eight games with the Lions in three years.
09:22So that's the good news.
09:23Probably not a lot of people bought the Ennis Rakestraw number nine jersey.
09:27Or?
09:28I don't remember what he was the first time.
09:29What was the first number?
09:32I don't recall.
09:33I think it was IL or something like that.
09:36Oh, wow.
09:38Wow.
09:4071 upside down, maybe?
09:42Yeah.
09:46Anybody you're interested in?
09:48Anybody you care about?
09:50Well, they don't have the rookies on there, and that's really what I care about.
09:53But I don't think they have the rookies.
09:54These were just...
09:56No, it's all the veteran guys.
09:57I like that the...
10:00The Hassassin is going 99.
10:02I always like 99 for defensive end.
10:03So I think that's cool.
10:06It changed from 61.
10:0761's kind of an easily forgotten number.
10:09It's an easily forgotten number.
10:11Yeah.
10:14Yeah, none of this is particularly moving the needle.
10:17Well, the...
10:17Yeah, Rakestraw is going from nine to two.
10:20The single digits.
10:21How many guys are at single digits?
10:22Just Rakestraw changing?
10:23No, Teddy Bridgewater is signed, and he's number five.
10:27Greg Dorch is number eight.
10:30Rakestraw is number two.
10:32Isaiah Pacheco is number 10.
10:36That's not single digits.
10:38It's a running back wearing number 10?
10:40Didn't he wear 10 at Rutgers?
10:42I don't remember.
10:44Pacheco, Rutgers, Google search.
10:47I think he did wear 10 at Rutgers.
10:49Apparently he wore number one.
10:51So...
10:51Minus the zero.
10:53Mm-hmm.
10:53He wore 10 at Kansas City.
10:54Okay.
10:55Yeah.
10:56So that would...
10:57It just seems unusual for a running back to wear the number 10.
10:59Yeah, things have gotten to the point where...
11:02I don't think you can predict what numbers people are going to wear anymore.
11:06Linemen are going to wear linemen numbers, but everybody else, you never know.
11:09I'm sad that Teddy Bridgewater...
11:11Didn't he wear 50 for the lines one time when he was with us?
11:15He did, right?
11:1650 for a quarterback.
11:19What was the reason he did...
11:20It was something strange.
11:22Like, really strange.
11:23Was it when he came back late?
11:27Teddy Bridgewater wore number 50 for the lines during the 2023 preseason.
11:32An unconventional choice for a quarterback by available jersey numbers and a nod to Detroit-based media.
11:36He wore it because he preferred number five.
11:38It was taken.
11:39It was a temporary choice allowed by relaxed rules during the preseason.
11:44He's rolling around in 5-0.
11:45No, in the game of quarterback.
11:47Number 50.
11:48What?
11:49I'm sorry.
11:50What?
11:50Seriously?
11:5250.
11:53He wore 50.
11:54Teddy Bridgewater.
11:55It's Carson Anderson, 97-1.
11:57The ship.
