Find out who Doug, Gator and Khang pick for the Lions at 17.
Transcript
00:00All right, here we go. Carson Anderson, 97.1. We'll keep taking your Pistons calls throughout
00:07the day. We do something leading up to the draft, our mock drafts. How do we do our mock drafts?
00:12Well, we try and figure out who the people really want, right? Who the people want the most at 17
00:19within reason. And for the purposes of this exercise, we do not, cannot trade the pick.
00:26Um, we had, um, previous mocks where, you know, we, we try to find the players. If a player is
00:35available in, in a couple of mocks, they're available for the purposes of this exercise.
00:39So it's 17 in Carson Anderson, 1.0. The, the, uh, selection was, uh, Caleb Lomu, uh, offensive
00:48lineman from Utah in 2.0. It changed and it was a keen Mesidor. Now there's something to
00:56keep in mind that edge rusher Miami, something to keep in mind. The day we did 2.0, it was
01:06announced during the show that Taylor Decker was leaving the lions. In fact, it was near
01:12the end of the show. So it was like all the votes were in the Mesidor had won the thing.
01:17So here we sit at the beginning of the, the start of 3.0. And we're going to start up
01:24right
01:24now. And we want to know who the perfect pick is at two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97,
01:2997. The list of unaccessible players includes Fernando Mendoza, the running back, Jeremiah
01:38love the three receivers, Tate lemon and Tyson, the tackle Francis Maui Noah. I know we talked
01:44about him last hour, possibly dropping to the lions, but nobody has even come remotely
01:48close to saying he's going to drop that far because of the injury, the edge defender, styles,
01:53Reese, David Bailey, Ruben Bain, the defensive backs, Caleb down and Montsor Delaney. We have
02:01left on the board and we got subject to debate. We kind of debated it most of the morning, but
02:06Monroe Freeling, Caden Proctor and Caleb Fano, the Spencer, sorry, Caleb Lomu, Spencer
02:13Fano, Spencer Fano, the tackle from Utah, the guard, Oliva Venga Awane from Penn State, the tight
02:22end, Kenyon Sadiq, the edge rushers, Akeem Mesidor, Keldrick Falk, and Zion Young, the cornerback,
02:29Jamad McCoy from Tennessee, and the safety, Dylan Thieneman from Oregon and everybody else. But just to
02:36kind of prime the pump a little bit, we gave you those names. The question becomes, who's a perfect
02:41pick at 17? Everybody would consider trading. Like if you, if somebody gave you a great trade
02:47offer, we'd all take it. But for the purposes of exercise, it's impossible to predict what
02:52those are going to be. No trades in Carson Anderson 3.0 or 2.0 or 1.0. Who is
02:57the perfect
02:57pick at 17? Out of those guys, who would you want the most? Doug, there's a lot of names on
03:07that list that you gave out that I'd be very happy with if they got any of those guys, right?
03:12But we're looking for the one. The one I think that makes the most sense. And I think it lines
03:18up this year. I think the need and players available, best player available, I think
03:23they both line up this year in the draft. And I think you're looking at offensive linemen.
03:28Yes, they signed Larry Borum in the offseason, right? But they only signed him to a one-year
03:32contract. So I could see them drafting an offensive lineman in the first round and that
03:37player competing from day one to earn that spot. May not be starting the season as your
03:42right tackle. I think Borum is going to be your right tackle to start the season. But I think this
03:48is a guy that competes for it and at some point probably overtakes him. And we know how injuries
03:54play a role too. And you hope that that's not the case, but nonetheless, the pick is in
04:04with a 17 selection in the 2026 NFL draft, the Detroit lions select offensive lineman,
04:13Monroe Freeling tackle Georgia. I'm not going to sway from that one. I think, I think this guy's
04:19a perfect fit for them. He's a massive individual. He's athletic as hell. He has like the fourth
04:26best RAS score in NFL combine history since they've been doing that. And I saw him on the
04:36up and Adams show with Kay Adams. And she asked him an interesting question about, you know,
04:41what do you say to people that, that have the criticism that you haven't started enough?
04:45He's like, yeah, I get it. I've only had like 18 starts at the, you know, on the, on the
04:49line.
04:50What I say to that is that while I wasn't starting, I was competing against the best defensive lineman
04:57in college football every single day at practice. When you look at the, you know, the Jordan Davises
05:02and the Jalen Carters of the world, this guy was out there every day in practice working against
05:07those guys. So I thought that was a really good point to bring up because isn't that what you want
05:12to know? Don't you want to test yourself against the best? And he was going against that Georgia
05:17defense for years. So I really liked that response to that was, I already thought that he was my guy
05:23that really kind of solidified for me. So there's a couple of things about this. I want to bring up
05:27you have, have, I know you're huge on Monroe Freeling and I'm going to, I'm going to ask Kang this
05:33and Kang, you just, you just tell me if you, what you think. Do you think even a scotch of
05:401% Gator
05:42wants it to be Monroe Freeling? So he can say Monroe Freeling the way Mel Kuyper does. I'll take the
05:47over.
05:48Okay.
05:50Two is all the things you brought up. Many of the things you brought up is one of the reasons
05:56why I
05:57think he is a, a player that the lions would covet. I think he's a player. The lions would like
06:03the
06:03RAS score thing is proven to be a predictor of who they take. And I said it two months ago
06:08that if
06:09he's on the board at 17, I think they take him. And I, I concur with that. I still think
06:16that's
06:16true. I still think if Monroe Freeling is there, they take him, but this is who I would take.
06:21No, I get it.
06:21And who I would take is somebody different. And I, and just to be, you would not be upset
06:27if they took, I would not be upset if they take Monroe Freeling.
06:29Kang, would you upset that took Monroe Freeling? I would not be upset. Okay. Doug,
06:33but my pick is in and with the 17th pick, the Detroit lions select edge rusher,
06:38Akeem Mesador from Miami. And this is about ready to make an impact right now. It's also,
06:45he's in that bucket of players that I think should be there amongst the best players available at 17.
06:52And I have more faith in Larry Boreham than I do DJ Wanham. And I think the defense needs help
06:57more
06:57in the offense. The offense isn't perfect that it definitely needs to be, you know, fixed up.
07:04But at the end of the day, if they go, Oh, tackle, I really hope they get reinvigorated and go
07:10into the
07:10free agent market and go get Cam Jordan at edge rusher. But in Mesador, if they go Mesador in round
07:17one,
07:17I hope they come back with an offensive lineman to compete with Larry Boreham in round two.
07:21I'm a huge Mesador fan. I like him a lot. I just, I like how the, the need matches up
07:27with tackle
07:27better. Um, but Mesador, when you watch Miami play down the stretch and you compare him to Bain on the
07:36other side, I mean, this is what a wealth of riches that they had having those two guys out there
07:40in
07:40the field at the same time. I don't think I'm out of line and saying, I thought Mesador showed up
07:45more than Ruben Bain did. And Bain was there. He was in the backfield the whole time, but Mesador was
07:49always there and making plays. And I, I just, I, I love his frame. I love his attack mode and
07:57you
07:58know, the knock on Bain is he's got the, the, the small arms, little T-Rex arms out there rushing
08:03to
08:03passer, still got to the quarterback, but there aren't those concerns with Mesador. Um, the, for some
08:10people have a concern that he's older. I don't care. I like Mesador a lot. Kang, is your pick in?
08:15I'll get right to it, boys.
08:19With the 17th overall pick, the Detroit line select office of tackle from Clemson, Blake Miller.
08:26I think Blake Miller is way under the radar here. I think, I, I think he'd be the perfect fit.
08:31I don't know if the lines would take him because I really truly believe they like Borum. They really
08:36do. They feel very comfortable with Borum at right tackle. If he's the starting right tackle
08:39to start the season with that being said, I would still take Miller because you add depth to the room
08:45yet competition, right? And he's your long-term solution at tackle. He might be your day one
08:50starter. He might be that good. All right. Huge frame, six, seven, 320 pounds or so Raskor through the
08:57roof. He set the program record with most career snaps played at Clemson. He was pissed. He missed
09:03one practice. This guy screams lion and he's the opposite of not being available. You know,
09:09a lot of fans always text us and call us like, Oh, he's injured. He's a Brad Holmes special.
09:14This guy, Brad Holmes is going to draft him. This guy plays. He wants to play. He hates missing
09:18practice time, let alone playing time.
09:20He's a Dan Campbell special.
09:21Yeah, he is. And so the issue with him, apparently with some people is his ceiling isn't as high as
09:27other players, but his floor is very high. I think he still has room to grow as a player as
09:31well, but
09:32I think Blake Miller would be the perfect pick for me. I think as far as defensive end, I like
09:36Macedor too, Doug. I think you can get away with rotational guys at defensive end, whether it's
09:41Wanham or Peyton Turner or whoever, Hassanine or whoever else they pick up. But if something were to
09:46happen at tackle the last year, they were caught with Dan Skipper, man who wasn't ready this,
09:52this year, don't get caught with your pants down. All right. So who's the perfect pick at 17? We've
09:57told you who the lions do not have access to and mock 3.0 Mendoza love the three wide receivers.
10:04Now we know of the tackle, the edge rusher styles, Reese, David Bailey, Ruben Bain, the defensive backs,
10:09Caleb down and Mansoor Delaney. That leaves everybody else. If it goes perfectly, who do you
10:17get? Who do the lions get at 17 in your world? This is your pick, not what you predict. They're
10:21going to do 2, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97. Get your picks in right now. When, when you
10:26tell us the pick
10:27is in, you will get the chime. So get your pick in as Carson Anderson 3.0 is underway. We
10:34do take
10:34texts and tweets as well. You can follow the link on Twitter at Doug and Gator 971 and respond to
10:39that. It is Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
