Transcript
00:00every day we get all the latest on the detroit lions draft news that's out there where they're
00:07being mentioned what's being talked about we put it in one place we call it the lions aggregate
00:12draft thingy and scott and kang we got some interesting stuff today starting with espn
00:19this morning on get up mike tannenbaum played matchmaker who's the perfect player for certain
00:26teams tannenbaum said the perfect fit for the lions at 17 edge rusher akeem mesador he said this will
00:36help them score points on offense and close out games on defense what do you make of tannenbaum's
00:42opinion that the perfect fit is akeem mesador edge rusher miami first of all i love akeem mesador
00:49you know this i've been touting him for a long time i don't care that he's older i think he's
00:53just
00:54he's got the mature body he's ready to go and uh i would expect him to kind of hit the
00:58ground running
00:59at a position where guys usually don't hit the ground running edge rusher kind of takes a year
01:04or two before you get you know some uh semblance of being the guy that people think you are there
01:10are exceptions i mean we saw a bunch of pressure from aiden hudgeson jared verse has been that guy
01:15um but really this all depends on who's on the board at 17 in terms of what the perfect pick
01:20is i think the
01:21perfect pick lines up with their needs which is more offensive tackle than it is edge rusher not
01:27that they don't need an edge rusher because i'd address that with the 50th pick um but it depends
01:31on who's there if the group of tackles that i really like is there i'm going that route now as
01:36far as the
01:36other point of helping them score more points i'm not sure i agree with that i think um that it
01:43actually
01:44is achieved more with the tackle position than with the defensive line i don't know what he meant by that
01:49yeah it's i want to i want to add to the offensive line to make it better so that a
01:53i score more
01:53points and two more importantly if all of a sudden we've got this run game going right that you control
02:00the clock and you keep your defense off the field which i think is key when you have an ailing
02:05defense
02:05like the lions have right now so i i actually disagree with his take tannenbaum perfect fit
02:10the key mesador kang what do you think yeah i would hesitate to use the term perfect but i do
02:15like
02:15the player uh he is older which means he's plug and play i think he can come in and play
02:19right away
02:20even maybe start depending on how his camp goes he's got really good technique which to me means
02:25he's very coachable so whatever they want him to do wise like i think he is very receptive to that
02:30type of stuff um as far as the offense i'm not sure about that but defensively yes he's gonna help
02:35close out games guys like that that are on the edge get sacks to end drives those are helping you
02:40you know close out games so i do like the player though i i don't attack the source very often
02:45i think it's i think it's a weak argument when you just go well that guy blah blah blah
02:50i will say this about tannenbaum i think he's obsessed with getting the lions another edge rusher
02:55again we talk about tannenbaum's opinions whenever miles garrett rumors come up detroit max crosby detroit
03:01and now he wants to get him an edge rusher but i think this is acceptable i think it's more
03:06than
03:06acceptable i think mesador makes more sense than a tackle the more i think about it and it's my
03:13belief in uh larry borum more than my belief in dj want him these are two free agents that they
03:18brought
03:19in i think i'm more comfortable with them going with borum next year than i am with dj want him
03:24opposite of aiden hutchinson and the age point i think is a great one he's more ready to play some
03:32people downgrade him for this i upgrade him for this he is more ready to play because he's physically
03:37more mature he had 12 and a half sacks last year 17 and a half tackles for loss and i
03:42like that he's
03:43older i love this match oh mesador in detroit at 17 and then i kind of like the depth at
03:50the tackle
03:51spot to maybe get your guy in the second round interesting next up bill barnwell espn writer did a
03:57story about teams that should move their first round pick one of the teams he wrote about was the
04:03detroit lions of the lions barnwell wrote they probably don't want to drop too far to ensure
04:08having a shot at a player who can step in as a starter in 2026 but dropping down a few
04:13spots and
04:14getting a third round pick back would be the ideal scenario for homes would you be in favor of this
04:19100 i'd be in favor of that i think every detroit lion fan out there says trade back but it
04:25comes with
04:25the caveat as long as you get the guy that you want we know that brad's got a bucket right
04:30you do
04:31not want to trade past your bucket of players and as long as you select from that bucket you're not
04:35reaching and you've added more draft capital and that's the name of the game i would love to see
04:41them uh trade back i'm curious to see how far they think they'd be able to trade back and still
04:46get
04:46their guy because the further you trade back the better the return you're getting is it possible that
04:51you can get a second round pick from somebody if you're trading back like to say 28 is that
04:57possible i don't i don't know but if you can get a third round pick for just trading back a
05:01few spots
05:01i'd do it 10 times out of 10. kang what do you make of this yeah i mean that's the
05:05dream scenario i
05:06think for most presidents and gms is to go back a couple spots get extra draft capital like a third
05:11round pick and still get the guy you would have took if you just stayed where you were at look
05:15what
05:15they did with jameer gibsey a few years ago everyone wanted jalen carter everyone thought maybe
05:19bijon robinson they wanted jameer gibbs the entire time they moved back got more picks and still got
05:25the guy they would have took at their original spot this would be a dream scenario yeah you gotta
05:29it's how far back and how many players are still there that you want and it's simple math if it's
05:35three spots back and there's four guys i still want i know i'm still gonna get at least i have
05:39a
05:39crack at one of them so you know if it's oliva venga awane if it's freeling if it's mesador if
05:45it's
05:46caden proctor whomever i mean it makes sense if they're all evaluated roughly the same position
05:53this is one of those deals that it all depends on what happens with the first 16 picks yeah uh
05:58next
05:58up last night on path to the draft on nfl network discussion came up about reuben bain and the car
06:04accident that resulted in a death of a passenger bucky brooks said his floor is the detroit lions at 17
06:10he'd be a competent playmate to aiden hutchinson i think about his energy his motor his relentlessness
06:15when it comes to getting to the quarterback how do you feel about reuben bain to detroit at 17
06:20he would be so hard to pass up on and i think i'd only pass on him for two reasons
06:27one if monroe
06:28freeling is there for the lions uh or if you get some kind of crazy offer um to trade back
06:34because
06:34some team sees reuben bain's there and they really want him i like reuben bain a lot um he strikes
06:39me as
06:40a jared verse type i think he could be one of these guys that from day one is a pressure
06:45monster
06:45out there because that's what he does he and mesador is so good last year and i and i do
06:50like
06:50both of those guys but i think um that reuben bain is is a bigger upside as far as the
06:56tragic decision
06:57from his past teams know about this teams have known about this it may not have been reported uh as
07:03as much
07:04but they do know so when brad holmes let it slip yesterday about that not slip but when he talked
07:08about it he said they've done their due diligence as is every other team um it's it's it's got to
07:15be
07:16incredibly difficult for him to live with that i feel bad for the guy but i don't think he's going
07:19to slide that much i don't think this is a gas mask bong situation like we had the eve of
07:24the draft
07:24kang what do you make of it yeah i don't think the car accident matters to gms as much because
07:29they've known about it for a while as much as his arm length i know this is the thing people
07:32like
07:33are they overreacting or not i think it matters i don't think he falls out of the first round but
07:36i think he might slip out of that top 10 top 15 range where he could be available to the
07:41lions
07:42now i think doing the research guys that are with this short of arm length historically this short
07:47they just don't pressure the quarterback well in the nfl and they don't get drafted in the first
07:52round a lot of times i think he's a guy who can set the edge and stop the run but
07:56if you're looking
07:56for a guy with consistent double digit sacks in the nfl i don't think he's going to be that guy
08:01so i'm not against drafting him but yeah i think your expectation if you're thinking you're getting
08:06the next aiden hutchinson i don't think you are based upon the information available to us i don't
08:11like it here's what's available to us the accident itself is one thing but no field sobriety test was
08:18administered it was 4 a.m when the accident happened he may have well fallen asleep but i'd like to
08:25know
08:25more information there but here's what i really don't like the fact that he had another another
08:30incident report this past season he was cited for careless driving this past season a police
08:37report cites that there was an accident but the cause but the case rather was dismissed because of
08:43a quote defective citation so in lieu of more details my instinct is to pass on him final thing
08:51nfl.com has a mock draft out this morning from writer gennaro felice and with the 17th pick the
08:58detroit lions select offensive tackle blake miller from clemson is this an acceptable pick well
09:07again it's all about you the team's evaluations he doing some research on on him uh he's got blake
09:14miller has got a high upside a very high upside he's a big guy six foot seven three hundred and
09:19fifteen
09:19pounds had a really good ras score but he does have warts and the warts are poor technique needs to
09:26get
09:26stronger and he's got leverage issues why because he's six foot seven it's hard to get that body bent
09:31down to get the leverage on the defensive lineman but all that stuff is actually coachable right
09:36technique is coachable getting stronger well you can do that by working harder in the weight room
09:41and and learning to use your body better for leverage again it's coachable and it's going to take some
09:45time but that being said i think there are five tackles when i go through the list that i would
09:51rather have on the lions than blake miller but if i'm hell bent on a tackle at 17 and the
09:56other
09:57edge rushers are gone then i'm and i can't trade away i i don't think i'd be upset to land
10:03him but i'd
10:04go for other guys if they're available i think this might be like the least sexy pick but also maybe
10:09the most solid pick his comp is like taylor decker to be honest with you and not like you know
10:13i mean
10:14not going to be an all pro tackle but solid for you know to the the right side for like
10:19six seven
10:20eight years if he's like the eighth tackle taken i'm not sure i like that you know i don't want
10:25to
10:25take but if he it's weird because it's gonna sound weird but if he was like the third tackle taken
10:29by
10:29the lines then they must have real conviction they like this guy a lot on paper like i said not
10:34the
10:34most sexy but he might be the solid guy on the right side taylor decker you know in this mock
10:40felice has caden proctor still on the board okay and he writes in the real world the lions need
10:47immediate help and tackle following the lease of taylor decker no time for a project and miller
10:51oozes experience having started every clemson football game all 54 of them over the past four
10:56seasons i guess i don't think of proctor is a project i think he's got he could come in and
11:01be
11:02a plug and play guy he's not a perfect candidate don't get me wrong but i like proctor better than
11:07miller so i don't love this pick well and jordan reed from espn has his list of players they have
11:13ranked in the ranked by position he's got him ranked as the fifth best tackle ahead of caden
11:17proctor who's number seven on the list you can take that for what it's worth 54 starts i think they're
11:23i don't know if they're consecutive he's gonna make 54 career starts at tackle in college that's a lot
11:28of playing at that position at a very high level so that there's there's like i said there's a lot
11:33of
11:33offside with him and that concludes our detroit lions draft aggregate thingy 248-539-9797 it's
