00:00All right, let me ask you about what you did see today, and that was Todd Munkin at his press
00:03conference.
00:04Daryl, the Miles Garrett story continues to get all sorts of traction.
00:09In an interesting way, there was definitely ways you could have answered if you're Todd Munkin that let Miles off
00:14the hook.
00:15I thought his way of answering was rather peculiar, all things considered.
00:18Do you feel like after hearing him talk about not only the people that he thought could be there and
00:23could benefit in particular from being there,
00:26did you think any part of that messaging was actually about Miles Garrett?
00:30Yeah, I mean, you want your best players to participate in the offseason program, but here's the thing.
00:42Miles Garrett never participates in the offseason program.
00:45Miles Garrett is there when he absolutely has to be there, and when he is there, he's the absolute best
00:52player on the field.
00:53So I don't subscribe to the Miles Garrett is the leader of this football team, so he has to be
01:02at everything, because I just don't think that Miles is a leader.
01:06And I'm not throwing shade at Miles at all.
01:09I just don't think that's in his personality.
01:11He leads on the field by being the best player on the field and a future Hall of Famer.
01:19So I kind of just shrugged my shoulders at the whole thing because this is nothing new.
01:26In other news, water's wet.
01:27Miles Garrett didn't show up for the offseason program.
01:32But look, I do understand the coaching point of view, but obviously Todd Munkin can't say he wants Miles Garrett
01:42there because it is a voluntary program.
01:44So he has to be careful in what he says and how he says it when it comes to not
01:51just Miles, but any player's absence from the offseason program.
01:55For me, the players that are supposed to be there are there, and that's quarterbacks.
02:01Those are the players that need to be there, the quarterbacks.
02:04So I'm not all that concerned about it, and I thought Todd handled that about as well as you.
02:11Let's put it this way, Todd Munkin handled the Miles Garrett question a lot better than I handled your Deanna
02:16Russini question to me.
02:17That's a fair response.
02:20Darrell, question for you.
02:21So, you know, obviously when you – the Browns are picking at six, and I've been a proponent of taking
02:26the best player available,
02:27and I've been big on Jeremiah Love and Caleb Downs.
02:31Have you gotten any insight of kind of where the Browns are leaning, and what are your thoughts, and where
02:35would you go with that pick?
02:37Well, no, I don't have any insight, and I don't think the Browns have any insight.
02:41Right now, you know, I think they're still sorting through it, and they've got five picks in front of them,
02:45right?
02:45You've got to see who falls to you.
02:47But I have maintained consistently that if Caleb Downs is there, Jeremiah Love is there, Tate is there.
02:58Like, if those three players are there, that's like the jackpot for Andrew Barry,
03:02because then he can trade out of the pick very easily and let someone come up and pay to select
03:10one of those three players.
03:11And there's a couple other guys that, you know, if they fall to you, you're in a similar situation.
03:18I would have no problem with Caleb Downs.
03:22Grant Delpit's contract is up this year.
03:24You've got to recycle your roster.
03:27He is an impact player defensively.
03:29So is Grant Delpit.
03:30So, you know, if they intend to re-sign Grant Delpit, I don't know that I would take Caleb Downs
03:37there.
03:37I might go a different direction.
03:38But if they don't have any intention of extending Grant Delpit again, then, yeah, I think that Caleb Downs,
03:47between him and Jeremiah Love, I do feel like those are the two best players that are available in this
03:54draft class.
03:55And it is a little crazy to me to think that the two best players in the draft class might
04:00get drafted outside the top five.
04:03Let me go back to the Munkin stuff really quickly, Daryl,
04:05because between Schwestinger's comments that Munkin had said and he brought up Super Bowl in the big speech that he
04:12was giving to everyone,
04:13do you feel like that was the right tone?
04:14Do you feel like that was the right message?
04:16Or is that just a – that's a pretty big statement, all things considered.
04:20That's a coach just being a coach.
04:24I am trying to keep a – I tried to keep a straight face.
04:27I just wanted – yeah, I wanted your reaction on that because we had Ashley on earlier,
04:30and Ashley was like, that was pretty telling that he brought up Super Bowl in that conversation in that moment.
04:35Yeah, like, I mean, I don't think that there's anyone on this planet other than maybe Todd Munkin
04:40that thinks the Browns have a realistic chance at the Super Bowl this year.
04:45They'll be lucky to be 500 this year, let alone – they'll be lucky to make a playoff.
04:50They'd be lucky to win the division.
04:52Like, there are so many things that would have to come before the Super Bowl.
04:56But look, I mean, that is the quintessential coach, given your, you know, initial speech.
05:01Yeah, of course he has to have that mindset.
05:03So I'm not going to criticize Todd for doing that because that's the mindset he has to have.
05:10Coach Riz and I talk about that all the time.
05:12You don't hand out losses until you've earned them type thing.
05:17But, like, you know, you plan to win every single game that you're competing in.
05:21They don't have the talent to win the Super Bowl, okay?
05:23They just don't, especially on the offensive side of things.
05:26Maybe defensively they do, but offensively they just – yeah,
05:31they don't even have enough talent to compete for their own division.
05:34So unless Andrew Barry works miracles in the next three, four weeks or so here
05:40to infuse this offense with, like, elite blue-chip talent at multiple positions,
05:46including the quarterback position, yeah, I think that that's a – you know.
05:52And also, too, this is his first type coaching job.
05:55This is his first real introduction to the team, right?
05:58So, clearly, Todd Munkin went into that room guns blazing earlier this week.
06:03No question about it, right?
06:05Darrell, let me ask you a question about Todd Munkin compared to the previous staff.
06:09Is he going to be a guy when you guys ask him questions,
06:13do you think he's going to kind of wear it on his sleeve a little bit more than Kevin did
06:16and give you more information of what's –
06:17I think it's impossible not to wear it on your sleeve any more than Kevin did
06:21because a little bit is going to be more than what Kevin did.
06:23So, I mean, I'm saying, will it be the opposite of that, though?
06:25Will it be too much, you think?
06:26Or will it be – you know, will he be a lot more – like, too emotional,
06:31as were Kevin had no emotion whatsoever?
06:34I'll say this, that every time we carry a Todd Munkin press conference,
06:38fingers need to be on the dump buttons.
06:41They did curse today, yeah.
06:42He did, yeah, okay.
06:44So, yeah, I mean, he – yeah, I mean, he – I think he gives a little more
06:50than Kevin Stefanski ever did in six years.
06:54He's very honest when he answers the questions,
06:58which I think is going to make criticizing him at times difficult
07:02because, hey, he's answering questions honestly.
07:04Like, what do you want from the guy, right?
07:07And so, yeah, no, I do think that, you know,
07:12he's going to carry it on his sleeve a little bit.
07:16And that'll be a good thing, but also, too, that could be a bad thing as well.
07:21So, he's going to have to learn to kind of ride that fine line.
07:26But from my perspective, I certainly appreciate and respect
07:30any time a coach is very open, honest, and candid when given answers,
07:36even if it's, you know, the answer we're not all looking for.
07:39And he did that a couple of times today when he was asked things.
07:44So, he did it when it came to Miles.
07:46He did it when it came to the quarterback situation.
07:49He did it when it came to, like, the offseason program
07:51and, you know, what they're trying to accomplish.
07:53So, he did it when asked about the haircut stuff
07:57and the perception of the Browns, right?
07:59Yeah, he's going to be very quotable, I think, is how I'll put that.
08:06All right, Darrell, we know you're at the Cavs game.
08:07I want your thoughts on what Atkinson had to say coming up in just a second.
08:10But, well, final Browns thing for us here.
08:12One of those jersey sites, you know, with the jersey Twitter accounts
08:15that tweet out when a player takes a number, et cetera.
08:18I had that the special teamer, Daniel Thomas, the defensive back,
08:22he's going to wear number 24 this year.
08:24Obviously, last assigned to Nick Chubb.
08:26Should Chubb's number have been off limits?
08:29No, and here's why.
08:32Because in the NFL, it's very hard to retire numbers now.
08:37The Browns, I believe, have – I forget how many numbers specifically
08:43that they have retired, but, like, it's hard to retire numbers these days
08:47in the NFL.
08:49I know Nick Chubb's a fan favorite.
08:52I know there are some fans that say nobody should ever wore 19 for Bernie Kosar,
08:57right?
08:59So, no, I think it's –
09:02So, the Browns, I looked it up.
09:03The Browns have five jersey numbers retired.
09:05You're not wrong about that idea, though, and I think a lot of people don't know that.
09:09Like, the Bears, for instance, Sterrell.
09:11You're a Hall of Famer.
09:12Yeah, like, you've got to be a Hall of Famer, I think, to have your jersey retired, right?
09:16Yeah, the NFL came out and was like, the Bears can't retire any more numbers.
09:19Like, it's a real thing they monitor and they keep track of.
09:23And so – but it's never been established that's the standard, though.
09:26Like, for the Indians slash Guardians, that's been the standard.
09:30It's been like, we don't retire a number unless you make it to the Hall of Fame.
09:33It doesn't matter who you are.
09:35Until you make it to the Hall of Fame, we won't retire the number.
09:37And when you make it to the Hall of Fame, then we can have that discussion.
09:40Meanwhile, the Cavs, if you make a couple All-Star games, they'll hang your number.
09:43Yeah, they got Bingo Smith up there.
09:45They got all sorts of people up there.
09:46And it's like – so, it's always interesting where that line crosses.
09:49And for someone of Nick Chubb's stature, I feel like he – the sad part for myself, Daryl,
09:54is I feel like, first off, he's not eligible to be in College Football's Hall of Fame
09:57because he never made an All-Pro.
09:58So, he's not in that.
09:59I think he's going to just miss out on the Hall of Fame.
10:02I don't think he's ever going to get the amount of votes.
10:03I think he's very close to fringe, and it's just not going to be enough.
10:08And then it's like, all right, the Browns, you can pick up the slack
10:10and make him an all-timer.
10:11But I don't think they're going to do it either.
10:12I think he fell just short for the Browns, too.
10:14And it's just kind of a sad realization that for as great of a career as he had
10:19and as memorable of a player as he is, he's going to get lost in the shuffle here.
10:24Yeah, well, I mean, they'll make him a Browns legend.
10:26That absolutely will happen.
10:28And so, they will honor him in that way, okay?
10:33But, no, I think that the retiring of a jersey is for the greatest of the great.
10:42I mean, there are players in the Ring of Honor right now, which, by the way,
10:45are only Hall of Famers with the exception of Clay Matthews Jr., okay?
10:49Those are the Ring of Honor guys.
10:52There are guys in the Ring of Honor whose jerseys are not retired.
10:55Yeah, I guess I wondered if they needed to – we show a little bit more tact in this moment.
11:00You know what I mean?
11:00It's obviously never going to get retired.
11:02Well, Trump's been gone a while, though.
11:03He's been gone for a couple years.
11:05So, like, you know, I have to go back and look off the top of my head.
11:10I can't remember if they gave his number away right away.
11:13But, I mean, you see that all the time, that once players leave, no matter how popular they are,
11:19you see their numbers are given away right away.
11:21I remember when LeBron left the first time, like, the Cavs gave 23 away, like, almost immediately.
11:27Which is a crime.
11:27It's an absolute crime.
11:28Right.
11:29Now, the second time after he left now, no Cavalier has worn 23 since then.
11:34And I don't anticipate any Cavalier will wear that ever again because they will retire that.
11:38At some point, Kyrie's number two will get retired.
11:42I agree with that.
11:43The zero will get retired.
11:43I agree with that.
11:44In the NFL, I just think it's – the standard has to be just, you know – and look, we
11:52all love Nick Chubb, okay?
11:54And it's unfortunate that his career did not have the longevity required for him to, you know, reach those specific
12:04marks.
12:05But, yeah, I don't think that retiring his jersey would be the right thing to do.
12:11All right, Darrell, final question.
12:12I saw you post some of Atkinson's quotes.
12:14We have not heard it yet.
12:15We're going to play it coming up next segment.
12:17But it does seem as if he gave off the impression tonight that the Cavs are going to be essentially
12:21a full go in trying to win this game.
12:23Yeah.
12:24Yeah.
12:24And also, too, very important.
12:26They've only had, like, less than 80 minutes of floor time for their new core four.
12:31That's Harden, that's Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jared Allen.
12:38They're going to get a look at that tonight.
12:39Very, very important tonight.
12:42So he's going to play this straight up like a normal game, not worried about playoffs or hiding anything or
12:47playing vanilla or anything like that.
12:50Full go.
12:51Going to try and win this tonight.
12:53Really get a look at those guys.
12:55And then they'll make a decision about, I think it's Friday they play, and then they'll play again to wrap
13:01up the regular season on Sunday.
13:03They'll decide what they're going to do for those final two games when it comes to playing time and whatnot.
13:08But tonight is very, very important for him to get a look at these guys together because they just haven't
13:14had a lot of floor time.
13:15So straight up tonight, and then we'll see what they do for the final two games.
13:21All right, Darrell, fantastic insight as always.
13:23We appreciate you.
13:24You bet.
13:25All right, good stuff.
13:25Darrell Ryder right there, brought to you by Shabbin Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
