00:00Let's go out to the Wise Heart Right. We make it right. Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:04His name is Daryl Ryder. He's our Browns Insider. He's brought to you by Shop and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry
00:08store.
00:09Daryl, how are we doing today?
00:12I am a little extra crispy and steamy right now.
00:16Oh, really? Did you get sunburned out there?
00:19Well, I don't know about sunburned, but yeah, we're a little hot right now.
00:25And the hair is, well, that's a sight to behold.
00:29If anyone wants to see what a disaster that is, head on over to our YouTube channel and check out
00:33the daily recap I did with Coach Riz from today's practice.
00:39I should have wore a hat.
00:40Man, I got sunburned from over the weekend, and not only did I – I don't look that much like
00:46a tomato, but I got sunburned so bad that it started to itch like crazy.
00:49And I've been, like, spraying anti-itch lotion, and I have been taking medicine and doing all that just to
00:56stop the itch.
00:57And it's quite uncomfortable, Daryl.
00:59Yeah, hopefully I don't get there, but I am at the age where I'm using the sunscreen regularly.
01:05You have to.
01:05You just have to.
01:06I stress this to Nick all the time.
01:08Nick doesn't wear sunscreen, and I tell him, like, this is not the fight you want.
01:12You're not tougher than the sun, man.
01:14No.
01:14It's the sun.
01:15Yeah, I've reached the age where sunscreen is definitely mandatory, or else I start landing planes with my nose.
01:22All right, Daryl, we're going to get into what you thought about Chador and Deshaun on the field.
01:26Off the field, though, is where I want to start with you guys and some of the commentary that was
01:29made today.
01:29I thought Deshaun had one of his strongest days as far as press conferences are concerned.
01:33Actually, I thought he had – I thought he composed himself well.
01:37I thought that it was informative in some ways and interesting in others.
01:41What stood out to me the most, though, was him saying he had no doubts he'd play again, and when
01:47pressed why, he said from internal conversations.
01:50What do you think – what do you make of those comments and the idea that he was basically all
01:56but assured a chance to play?
01:58Yeah, well, I mean, they invested $230 million in him, so not all that surprised.
02:08I hope he plays better than does press conferences, though, because today was not one of those days.
02:15His press conference was better than his day on the practice field.
02:19But, yeah, I mean, that's not a surprise.
02:23They got him on the practice field last year for that four-week stretch before putting him on the shelf
02:31for the rest of the season there.
02:33So, look, I mean, from his standpoint, all you can ask for at this point is an opportunity, and the
02:41Browns are giving him that.
02:43It's kind of on him what he does with the opportunity from there.
02:47Darrell, obviously the two guys back and forth, I mean, you would have had to pull teeth to get them
02:51to say negative one thing about the other.
02:54But is that, in your eyes, kind of the right approach to this, or is the typical, you see a
03:00little bit of bickering back and forth, two guys being cutthroat, more of what you want to see for a
03:04starting quarterback in the NFL?
03:06No, they're handling it the right way.
03:08You don't need to do any bickering back and forth.
03:10Shadour was asked a question about attending offseason, whatever, get-togethers, or doing his own get-together.
03:17If he's going to go to Deshaun's, whatever, and he didn't really appreciate that question, thought it was divisive.
03:23I thought it was a pretty fair question.
03:24You know, what are you going to do?
03:25You're going to do your own thing?
03:26You're going to do it with Deshaun's?
03:28Well, you're going to Deshaun's?
03:30Like, I think that's pretty fair because that's what these guys do in the offseason in between their vacation is
03:35they do these offseason get-togethers where they, you know, they work on the playbook with teammates.
03:41So, but yeah, I'm not, I really don't care about a war of words.
03:47I just like to see better play on the football field between them.
03:50That's where I want the competition to be.
03:51All right.
03:52So what did you see from Deshaun Watson today on the field and include yesterday as well?
03:56Oof.
03:58I mean, if he's the lead dog in this race, I don't know if that says more about how far
04:05behind Shadour is
04:07or just what an interesting season we'll be in for, I think is how I will put it.
04:13I mean, look, I mean, he'll throw a beautiful ball on one throw and then the next throw, miss a
04:17receiver by five yards.
04:19Like, just it's the way she goes.
04:24So I honestly don't know what to make of it.
04:27It's not a surprise Todd Munkin's not naming a starting quarterback after this mini camp.
04:32Uh, this thing's going to go into training camp and I have no idea when he's going to be able
04:38to name a starter
04:39because neither one of these guys distinguishing themselves, not by any stretch of the imagination.
04:43Yesterday was Shadour's turn to get the, uh, the, the first up reps today.
04:48It was Deshaun Watson's turn and we'll see what they do tomorrow.
04:51I think, uh, if I remember correctly, Munkin told us yesterday that he's going to,
04:55it's going to be more even and balanced on day three.
04:58So, uh, one day Shadour, next day Deshaun, even for day three, we'll see if ultimately that ends up being,
05:05um, uh, the repetition there, but, um, not the least bit impressed with Deshaun today.
05:12And I've not really been all that impressed with him this off season, other than he is healthy,
05:18which is good for him.
05:19He's healthy.
05:20He's in one piece.
05:21Um, we see glimpses, but the, the consistency that we used to see from Deshaun in practice,
05:27pre all the injuries, uh, just is it's, it's not there.
05:31Um, and so I think that's somewhat problematic because this is actually the easy part of,
05:37uh, the calendar.
05:38Daryl, help me with that.
05:39Like I've never seen Deshaun out at training camp personally, but all I hear is the fact
05:44that every single time he's at training camp or mandatory mini camp, this is where he looks
05:48great and he blows everybody away.
05:50But over the last couple of days, I'm hearing far more of the opposite.
05:53Yeah, no, he ain't blowing anyone away other than football's out of bounds or,
05:58uh, so yeah, I mean, and that's the thing, right?
06:02This is usually when he is impressive and he's not impressive yet.
06:05Now we can flip that around and say, well, that's positive because he's building up to
06:08it.
06:08He's just, you know, whatever.
06:10But, uh, again, this is the, the easy part of the assignment.
06:14It gets harder from here.
06:16Um, especially when they put an defense on the field.
06:19So, um, yeah, I'm, I'm, I just, I'm not real optimistic right now, uh, what they're going
06:26to be able to get out of Deshaun Watson at this point, other than, oh, he's available
06:30and healthy to play.
06:32Uh, so, you know, we'll see what it looks like, I guess, come training camp.
06:37What was your takeaway with Shadour?
06:38It felt like he was, it was just kind of different for him today.
06:41Yesterday he was really, we had a really nice day.
06:43I didn't get anything positive or negative.
06:46Usually, usually it kind of comes through, through the, through all the different plays
06:49that, that media members put out.
06:51I did not get a good sense one way or another.
06:53Yeah.
06:54I don't, the reason I don't put a lot of videos out is I can't even see what I'm shooting
06:58because it's so bright.
06:59I'm looking through, uh, sunglasses and I can't see the screen on my phone.
07:04So I have no idea what I'm shooting.
07:08Okay.
07:09And, uh, and, and trying to do the, okay, let me put the phone under the shirt so I can
07:13see what I just shot and see if it came.
07:15Nope.
07:15It didn't come out.
07:15Okay.
07:16Let's try it again.
07:18So, but, uh, yeah, uh, yeah, you know, I, I, I, Shadour didn't do anything to really
07:24stand out to me today or wow me or blow me away or disappoint me.
07:28So, yeah, I mean, I thought it was interesting, Daryl, because, you know, you mentioned coach
07:32Riz and coach Riz, you guys do these recaps and, you know, it did kind of feel like in his
07:36recap today, it was just very like, all right, Shadour was there.
07:38It just kind of existed.
07:40Present and accounted for.
07:41We can confirm he practiced.
07:42Yeah.
07:43Meanwhile, yesterday, you know, coach Riz had texted me and said, I think he's clearly
07:46the starting quarterback, you know, such an emphatic exclamation point.
07:50Yeah, I know.
07:52And again, this is, you know, when you get, not just you guys, but when all the shows ask
07:57me, Hey, who's going to be the starting quarterback?
07:58I'm like, the heck if I know, like, I don't think the Browns know at this point, neither
08:03one of these guys has been consistent enough to earn that spot.
08:10Right.
08:11Both have had their good days and their bad days, their pluses, their minuses, their great
08:16throws in the, oh my goodness gracious, how are you in the NFL throws?
08:20So, I mean, that's just the way it's gone, which is, you know, unfortunate, but look, that's
08:27the reality of the situation.
08:29I can't gloss over it, not by any stretch of the imagination.
08:32So, you know, I guess tomorrow's the tiebreaker.
08:36We're even 1-1 and we'll see what tomorrow is.
08:38Oh, I can't even call this even.
08:40I think Deshaun, I think he blew it and I think he's 0-2 right now.
08:42I'm trying to be nice at this point, okay?
08:45Listen, Jonathan, it's June.
08:46I'm trying to be as positive as I can, okay?
08:48And I'm also trying not to talk myself into a deep depression before training camp even
08:53gets here when it comes to the quarterback play.
08:55All right, Daryl, that means I'm going to ask you more about the quarterback play.
08:58Great.
08:58Awesome.
08:59Excellent.
09:00Yes.
09:00Fire away.
09:02So, obviously, Todd had mentioned earlier this week, he kind of goes back and forth
09:06between what quarterback's in the lead on any given day.
09:09Is it too early right now to say what we've seen out of Shador Sanders, that he would not
09:14be named the starter, but in the competition currently in the lead?
09:17No.
09:20These guys are, in my view, these guys are tied for awful.
09:24Like, it's...
09:25They're all.
09:25They're tied for consistently...
09:26What happened to the positive?
09:27I thought it was June 10th.
09:29I thought you were positive.
09:29They're tied for consistently inconsistent, okay?
09:33Here's the bright spot.
09:34The receivers do look better.
09:37Denzel Boston has a tremendous catch radius and catches everything thrown in his general
09:42direction.
09:43That's nice.
09:44I just...
09:45I can't get on board with this quarterback stuff right now.
09:49Maybe after six weeks off from being away from this, maybe my attitude will change, but
09:55right now, I...
09:56In fact, you know what?
09:57After...
09:57I need six weeks away from that.
09:59Oh, jeez.
10:00Okay?
10:01We need six weeks away from watching that.
10:03I mean, Todd Munkin, I'll say this.
10:06You know, he gets after these guys.
10:09I mean...
10:10Doesn't have a voice right now.
10:11I know.
10:12That's how much he had to get out.
10:13Now do you understand what type of a day it was out there?
10:16Todd Munkin blew a vocal cord today, okay?
10:19He's always like one yell away from blowing a vocal cord.
10:22Oh, he's got the...
10:22He's always right on the edge.
10:24This is going to be a horrible impression.
10:25He's got the coach Luke going.
10:29That's what he's got going.
10:31He's got the John Lucas voice rolling.
10:33Mack rightly gave a look of, I don't know what's happening right now.
10:36I don't know.
10:37Neither do I.
10:37I think I just blew a vocal cord trying to do that.
10:40I didn't think it was bad.
10:41I didn't think it was great.
10:41But I didn't think it was bad, Darrell.
10:43Hey, you know what?
10:44Just like the quarterbacks.
10:45Not bad.
10:46Not great either.
10:46So if you notice, because in the past we've talked about Munkin, and I don't know that
10:50I'd call you a skeptic.
10:52I don't want to go that far with it.
10:53I was a skeptic when they hired him.
10:55That's fair to say.
10:56So it seems like, has your tune changed at all based off of watching the practices and
11:00seeing how these things have gone?
11:01Look, I like the way he's handled everything.
11:03I don't know how successful he's going to be, but I certainly have an understanding of
11:08how he's handling things on the field.
11:10I like it.
11:11I like the fact that he's not afraid to tear into players right in front of us and stop
11:17plays when things aren't being done correctly.
11:21He's holding guys accountable during practice and not waiting, I guess, to the film room to
11:26do that.
11:27So yeah, I'm a little more positive about the Munkin experience that we may or may not be
11:36having.
11:36But look, he's going to be a victim of the quarterbacks, or he's going to be the beneficiary
11:41of the quarterbacks, right?
11:43He'll keep his job as long as he wins games and as long as the quarterbacks perform, you
11:50know, but I do have to give him his credit.
11:53Yeah, I'll admit I was a skeptic.
11:55I don't, yeah, of course, but I certainly understand what he's trying to accomplish in
12:01practice.
12:02And I certainly understand the level of accountability he's trying to bring to the practice field
12:06as well.
12:06And I got to be honest with you, it's almost refreshing to see in some respects.
12:12All right, Darrell, last one.
12:14Who has impressed you the most in the past couple of days or stood out the most to you
12:17and something you've noticed where you're like, all right, this feels like it's real
12:21and this might be, this is different than what I initially expected.
12:24Isaiah Bond and Denzel Boston.
12:27Both.
12:28They both have impressed me.
12:33Isaiah looks like a guy who actually had a chance to have an offseason and put a little
12:41weight on, good weight, work on his game a little bit.
12:45It's vastly improved, no question about it.
12:48And as I said earlier, Denzel Boston, he just catches anything thrown in the same area code
12:52of him, which the Browns desperately need.
12:55He's got a big frame as well.
12:58So those are my two favorite players that I have watched during the offseason in the
13:03last couple of days.
13:04All right, Darrell.
13:04Fantastic insight.
13:05We appreciate you.
13:06We'll catch up with you later.
13:07Thanks, sir.
13:07I'm sorry.
13:08Was I supposed to mention a quarterback when you asked that question?
13:10No, that was perfect.
13:11Exactly what we're looking for.
13:12Thank you, Darrell.
13:13You bet, guys.
13:13Have a good one.
