00:00He joins us now, courtesy of Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:05Daryl, welcome to the show.
00:07Hello, boys.
00:08So, did Kenny Atkinson go full, just knock the you-know-what out of the Cavs again today before the
00:14game,
00:15or was that just last night?
00:16No, I think the message was delivered sufficiently last night, his displeasure with the defense
00:23or the lack thereof that they have been playing recently.
00:26It is a message that he had been trying to deliver for the last couple of weeks
00:30and had not been seeing results on the floor.
00:34And so, he was actually asked before the game, why do that last night?
00:38Why call out your basketball team in that fashion publicly?
00:42And, you know, that's basically trying to get the message home that if they continue to play that way
00:48on that end of the floor, you know, in the postseason, you're just not often going to have a lot
00:55of success
00:55when you're running up and down the floor trying to outscore teams, you've got to bring it defensively.
01:02And I think that it also plays into the narrative that it has hovered over this basketball team
01:08the last few years about being soft, not being intense enough or strong enough.
01:14So, you know, the message was set and tonight provides them with a pretty good opportunity.
01:19Actually, the next two games, I should say, because Miami will be here again on Friday.
01:25But a good opportunity against a Heat team that can get up and down the floor, whether or not that
01:30message was actually received.
01:32Yeah, Darrell, I didn't hate him doing that.
01:35I really didn't.
01:35But I do think the timing of it is a little peculiar, right?
01:38Like, wouldn't you rather deliver that message when the next game is a game that the Cavs can deliver on
01:43that
01:43and be like, yeah, we listened to our coach and we heard and responded,
01:47not when you're about to do the second night of a back-to-back.
01:50Right.
01:51Well, and again, against the, you know, a Miami Heat team that can score.
01:56But they're running out of time, Jonathan.
01:59I mean, that's just the reality of the situation here.
02:02The playoffs are going to be here in a blink of an eye.
02:04They don't have many games left on the schedule.
02:06He made no excuses.
02:07He didn't want to hear about how Jared Allen has banged up, even though he is their best rim protector.
02:12You know, Evan Mobley, who Kenny talked about before the game, is he's mostly a quiet type of a personality.
02:20But even he recently has been calling guys out for missing assignments on that end of the floor.
02:29And that's something that, quite frankly, they need.
02:31And one of the people that Evan called out was Donovan Mitchell.
02:35And Atkinson acknowledged that a year ago, Evan Mobley doesn't do that.
02:39So, you know, I think that the timing is, yeah, I just, I don't think that there's a luxury of,
02:48at this point of the season, Donovan, for them to find the right time to call the team out.
02:52They only got like 11, 10, 11 games left on the schedule.
02:54So, they do not have a lot of time to get this thing fixed on that end of the floor.
03:01Darrell, normally we just charge ahead and ask you a question about the Browns and Miles Garrett,
03:07modifying some of the language in the contract.
03:09But this came out as you're covering the Cavaliers.
03:12Have you had a chance to look at it?
03:14No problem if not.
03:15No, but I can take a second.
03:18Let me, yeah, if we were in the middle of Kenny Atkinson's contract, what did he,
03:25basically what did Miles do?
03:27Well, how about this?
03:28Because I don't want you to speak about something that I'm going to poorly paraphrase here.
03:31We'll just move on.
03:32I just want to see if you had seen it, but since you haven't yet.
03:35Well, I see it here from Field Yates here, so.
03:43So, I'm just reading it right now.
03:44No, we know that.
03:46We know that.
03:46We could have given you a quick synopsis or something.
03:48I don't think I could have.
03:49I think that's the problem.
03:50No, is that it?
03:50Yeah.
03:51I mean, it just looks like what they did was they moved back the dates for option bonuses.
04:00So, yeah, it just looks like that it's just been pushed back an extra week, or no, it's
04:07been pushed back to seven days before the regular season each year.
04:19So, what that does, though, is it gives the Browns some flexibility.
04:24We see them do this with players all the time.
04:27Like, for instance, Denzel Ward, right, they converted, you know, part of his contract
04:35into a bonus and then go and convert his salary in late August, early September into another
04:43bonus, and that opens up salary cap space.
04:46So, what this does is this gives the Browns another runway, a longer runway to do that with
04:53Miles.
04:53It's similar to with, like, Deshaun's contract and how they just convert his salary into a
04:59bonus to lower his cap figure.
05:03That's really all this is, is he's getting the same amount of money.
05:07Just the structure of when he receives that money changes a little bit.
05:13But, again, instead of them having to do this a week after the new league year, now they
05:20can do it like a week before the season begins.
05:24There are about, like, 10 different GMs and coaches at Ohio State's Pro Day today.
05:28The Steelers are always there.
05:29They were there when Tomlin was the head coach.
05:31Now they're there with McCarthy and Omar Khan, both in attendance today.
05:35Cat Hickman was there.
05:36Glenn Cook was there.
05:37Is it odd to you that Andrew Barry doesn't go to this?
05:41Well, I mean, it's not odd because this is how Andrew Barry does things.
05:47So, normally, last year was an exception, though.
05:50Yeah.
05:51I was just about to say, last year was a bit of an exception when they did go on the
05:56quarterback
05:57tour there.
06:00It also included ownership.
06:02Let's be clear about that.
06:04So, you know, ownership stops lying around the country looking for a quarterback this
06:09year.
06:09So, no, it's not odd to me only from the standpoint of this is how Andrew Barry normally operates.
06:16Now, do I think it's odd just from an overall?
06:20But, yeah, a little bit.
06:22You know, I remember previous GMs.
06:25We would rip them a new one when they wouldn't go to pro days.
06:30But I hope that whatever process they used last year leading up to the draft and allowed
06:38them to have the success that they did, I just hope that they're replicating it this
06:42year.
06:43They're not changing anything that they did last year from a scouting standpoint.
06:49But him sending Hickman and Cook on the road for the pro days to do that type of leg work,
06:57that is not out of...
07:00That's not something that is abnormal.
07:04That is just how Andrew Barry has done this for most of his tenure here.
07:09So it's kind of hard for me to criticize him for doing what he typically normally does.
07:15Daryl, the Ohio State Pro Day today, as we have been talking about here, is Carnell Tate
07:20the easiest pick to sell to Browns fans at six?
07:26Yeah, it might be.
07:28I think that's, you know, probably the easiest sell, as you put it, Nick.
07:37Freeling, I don't think will excite anyone other than, you know, people like me to be like,
07:43hey, well, they got their new franchise left tackle that they've been looking for, right?
07:51But, you know, it's a football factory down in Columbus.
07:56And it's not just about players that get drafted.
08:00For me, it is about players that are also successful in the National Football League.
08:10And Ohio State Buckeyes have a tremendous track record for success in the NFL.
08:20So, you know, I made the joke last year about his...
08:24Because his draft strategy had been not producing results in previous years,
08:30I joked that he should just take the best Buckeye on the board.
08:33I think that Caleb Downs could still be another real viable option and, you know, hard to argue against.
08:43But I would take either of those Buckeyes at six.
08:47I would find it very hard from my standpoint, Nick, to criticize Barry if he turned the card in with
08:52either of those two names on it at six.
08:54But, Daryl, Albert made some waves yesterday when we had him on.
08:59Nick put it at 90%.
09:00I put it at 80% that Shador Sanders would start week one based off of what we know right
09:05now.
09:06And the idea that anything can obviously change.
09:08Albert said 30% for Shador Sanders to start week one.
09:11A lot of his reasoning is baked into Deshaun Watson.
09:14He seems to think Deshaun's really in play.
09:16What percentage chance would you give the idea that Shador Sanders would be the week one starter as of right
09:21now?
09:22I'd probably put it at about 45%.
09:25He's got to win the job.
09:28Deshaun absolutely is in play.
09:30The organization is making that very well known to people that Deshaun is in play.
09:35Now, could part of that be that they're trying to motivate Shador and let Shador know that, hey, you know,
09:44this thing isn't being handed to you, right?
09:46Yeah, I'm sure that could be part of it.
09:48But, yeah, I mean, right now I would probably say without seeing anything on the field or how reps have
09:56been divided or anything like that,
09:58I'd probably say 55% Deshaun Watson week one, 45% Shador Sanders week one.
10:04And then, obviously, these are the Browns.
10:06There's always the wild card.
10:07But, you know, we are at the end of March.
10:09They still haven't added another quarterback to the roster.
10:13So, it really is looking like that they will either draft the guy or sign an undrafted free agent to
10:21be that fourth arm for them this offseason.
10:24Obviously, that can change here in the coming days.
10:26But, you know, Joe Flacco's got himself a new contract in Cincinnati.
10:31So, you know, a lot of the retreads have already come off the board in free agency.
10:37Daryl, we appreciate you, buddy.
10:39Thank you so much for your time, and we'll catch up down the road.
10:41Thank you, Daryl.
10:42All right, guys.
