00:00Browns-Steelers on Sunday. Today was the turning of the page.
00:03We talked about Todd Munkin's press conference today,
00:06him downplaying this game and this rivalry on Sunday.
00:10We talked about the Connor Orr dream trade for the Browns,
00:15which sounds like a bit of a nightmare to continue talking about all those things.
00:18We welcome on Daryl Ryder, brought to you by Shabin Jewelers,
00:21Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:23Daryl, welcome to the show.
00:24Hello, boys.
00:25How you doing, bud?
00:26Doing good.
00:27Cleveland, 5-2, feeling pretty good about this weekend.
00:31I'm pretty good about this weekend.
00:33Am I detecting a note of confidence there?
00:36I think you are.
00:38Do we have a guarantee, Daryl?
00:39No, no guarantees.
00:42But are you going to pick the Browns?
00:44I am leaning heavily in that direction, Nick.
00:47Could you do me a favor and not pick the Browns?
00:50Oh, because you're afraid I'm going to jinx them?
00:52Are you a mush?
00:54I never thought of you as one.
00:55You could be a cooler.
00:55I don't know, because the Browns have never been that good,
00:58but you could be a cooler.
01:01Actually, one would make the argument that Daryl helped the Browns win their
01:04postseason game against the Steelers.
01:06Yeah.
01:06Did they give everyone COVID?
01:09No.
01:09Are you why Kevin was in his basement?
01:12No.
01:14We'll leave it there.
01:15Okay.
01:15Yeah, we'll leave it there.
01:17Daryl, getting to this game on Sunday.
01:20Actually, no, I want to start with the Munkin thing.
01:22I didn't like the way Todd Munkin handled the talk about this rivalry game on Sunday.
01:28I just thought he downplayed it too much.
01:30I understand the reason why he would do that.
01:33He's trying to minimize the pressure on this game.
01:37I don't like it.
01:38I want to hear him say he wants to beat the Steelers.
01:40Yeah, I agree in that respect.
01:43I think that publicly he's downplaying it, but I don't think there's a chance privately
01:50that he's not bringing up the history and the fact that the Browns have not won a regular
01:58season game there since 2003.
02:01I think absolutely it has come up.
02:04It will come up.
02:05The players tried to have the poker faces on today when fielding questions about it.
02:12They're aware.
02:14They're very much aware of the Browns' plight when they travel to Pittsburgh.
02:21So I don't necessarily believe Todd Munkin.
02:29I think that he is just trying to set the tone, if you will, and I have no doubts that
02:39he's getting them properly prepared mentally to go into that building because he's gone
02:48there and won.
02:49He actually knows what that's like as a member of the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff.
02:55So that is not a foreign concept to him like it is pretty much a foreign concept to the
03:02rest of us.
03:03Daryl, are the Steelers making too big of a deal of Jared versus comments after the game?
03:08You got Cam Hayward going on Rich Eisen.
03:10You have Mason McCormick telling Mark Caballi that he's going to get him back at some point
03:15in this game.
03:15Are they making too big of a deal or is this just the bulletin board material they needed?
03:21Nah, it's nice to see Brown Steelers back, isn't it?
03:24I mean, this is what it is.
03:27I mean, the games get chippy.
03:30Extracurricular stuff does happen.
03:32It's a matter of what the officials are going to throw the flags on and what they're not
03:36going to throw the flags on.
03:38So no, I don't think a big deal is being made of anything at this point.
03:43It's just nice to see that the Browns are going to head to Pittsburgh this weekend and
03:46play a relevant football game in this rivalry.
03:49The winner gets first place in the division and is in the driver's seat.
03:52Uh, and the loser will have some catching up to do.
03:55Um, uh, so, uh, the Browns obviously have an opportunity to sweep this series, which they
04:00haven't done, uh, since the 1990s.
04:03And, um, you know, the, the Steelers have an opportunity to, uh, regain control of the
04:09division.
04:10So no, I, I, I, I am not going to get the least bit bent out of shape about anything
04:16that anybody is saying.
04:17The more talking, the merrier.
04:20All right, Daryl.
04:20So, uh, did you, uh, you're very online these days.
04:23Uh, did you see Connor ors, uh, dream trade for the Browns of the deadline, uh, for them
04:30to trade for a backup quarterback that Todd Munkin might actually want to play.
04:33Yeah, that is correct.
04:35Yeah.
04:35Now he uses the logic and this is, he says, I think the idea of turning to, uh, Shador
04:41Sanders is a non-starter for Todd Munkin.
04:43Have you gotten any sense to believe that is the case?
04:46Uh, no, um, but also I, you know, would understand why if at some point Munkin does make a change
04:57with QB two.
04:59Now it was interesting today, Todd, I want to be careful how to phrase this.
05:04Cause I, I want to be fair to Todd here.
05:06He was very quick to answer the question when he was asked about, uh, any changes coming to
05:13the quarterback depth chart or room, uh, with the activation of Dylan Gabriel off injured
05:19reserve.
05:19And he very quickly said, I haven't thought about it yet.
05:23We know that's not true.
05:24Um, cause remember on Monday, uh, similar response to whether or not they're going to activate
05:31Dylan Gabriel from injured reserve.
05:34And then two hours later, lo and behold, the Browns announced they activated him.
05:37So I do think that Todd Munkin has thought this through.
05:40I think that, uh, you know, he certainly had three weeks to think about it as well, since
05:44they designated him to return, I'm not going to sit here and say that Todd Munkin's got
05:48some beef with Shador Sanders and, uh, you know, and like was insinuated there, uh, by
05:56Connor or in what he wrote, but, um, it would not like, I just, I wouldn't be shocked.
06:02Now I'll tell you based on the reps that I saw, the individual reps that I saw at practice
06:07today, no changes should or Sanders was right there next to Deshaun Watson as the number
06:12two quarterback, taking the, the individual reps during the portion open to reporters.
06:17Should we be talking more about some of these other quarterbacks that Connor's bringing
06:20up?
06:20Like Spencer Rattler, who I think is no good, but should we be discussing these guys more?
06:24Yeah.
06:25I, I, I think that a quarterback trade could be in the offing, but that's more so one leaving
06:31here as opposed to coming here.
06:34Um, you know, I, I don't think that in four weeks they're going to have four active quarterbacks
06:40on this roster.
06:41I think they'll do it for a little bit here, but I just think it stands to reason.
06:45One of these guys is getting voted off the Island.
06:48Um, just the, the, uh, roster attrition of a season.
06:53I just don't think that's a luxury you can have is four quarterbacks on your active roster.
06:58It's just, it just doesn't register with me.
07:01Now we've seen the Browns use four quarterbacks in a season out of necessity.
07:05Hell, they've had seasons where they've used five of these guys, but you're seven weeks
07:09into this thing right now.
07:11Uh, so, um, yeah, you know, I, I think that, yeah, it, it probably be more about one of these
07:18guys leaving than them making some, you know, big trade to bring somebody in.
07:24Daryl, uh, we mentioned a Connor or his dream trade.
07:27Do you have a dream trade target, uh, for the Browns at the deadline?
07:32No, I, I, I honestly, I don't.
07:35I think that right now with the way this is going, it is best to hang on to your assets.
07:44If you're Andrew Barry and play this thing out, you're all you're ahead of schedule.
07:48It would appear, I don't know how the rest of the season is going to go, but I do believe
07:52this is sustainable.
07:53I do think that, um, they're going to be in the playoff conversation come late November,
07:59early December.
08:00I don't know if they're going to get there, but they'll, they'll be in contention.
08:03I don't see this thing falling apart or the bottom falling out from underneath them.
08:08Like we have seen in some seasons, a lot of folks want to point back to 2014.
08:13Um, you know, this is the late, uh, you know, one of the latest years that they've had.
08:17I mean, they were, you know, in, in 2020, they were five and two as well.
08:20That season didn't fall apart.
08:22Um, that was obviously it was the COVID year, but in 2014, when they were five and two and,
08:26you know, people behind closed doors on the second floor of the building were anxious
08:31to play Johnny Manziel.
08:32Well, that guy's not on the roster.
08:34Um, so, um, I, I, I think that this will be sustainable for them.
08:41Um, and I, I'm not sold that Andrew Barry needs to go out there seeking some big blockbuster
08:48trade, uh, to get this thing over the top.
08:51Um, uh, just based on where they are in their team building process.
08:55I think they need those first round picks next year and their second round picks next year.
08:59And quite frankly, with how well Andrew Barry's done the last two years in the draft, I think
09:03Browns fans should want him to keep those in his back pocket as well.
09:06Has Judy now become untouchable since they're in first place?
09:09No, I don't think he's untouchable, but I see the value in keeping him.
09:14I, uh, have said I, uh, that I, I would not trade Jerry Judy.
09:19I think that there's value there, but if behind the scenes, if Jerry, and I want to be very
09:25clear, I am not saying this has taken place.
09:27This is my opinion.
09:29If Jerry Judy behind the scenes has gone to Andrew Barry and said, Hey, could you find me a
09:33better situation here?
09:35Um, then sure.
09:36Go ahead and move them.
09:37But, um, outside of that, no, I don't think they should be shopping him.
09:42If the phone rings, obviously answer it.
09:44And if you get an offer that just knocks your socks off, you pull the trigger.
09:48But I would not actively pursue a trade of Jerry Judy.
09:54Daryl.
09:56Appreciate you.
09:57Good stuff.
09:58Thank you, Daryl.
09:58You too, guys.
09:59Daryl Ryder brought to you by Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
10:04I, I do think, uh, I, I think people are confusing giving away a lot of picks to be your,
10:11you know,
10:12dream targets.
10:13Yeah.
10:13Like Charlie Kohler, who was with the Ravens with Todd Munkin for a few years.
10:17He's I think tight end two for the, the chargers.
10:21If I could get him for a fourth or fifth round pick.
10:23I, to me, that's a great, great move for this team.
10:26I'm yeah, I'm not fourth and fifth round pick guys.
10:28I'm perfectly fine with go, go after do even Khalil Mack is a huge name still comes with production.
10:34I don't think they're getting a top 100 pick for Khalil Mack.
10:38He's 36 or 37 years old.
10:40I mean, look at what the market's already done.
10:41We, we saw a hall of famer and Quentin Nelson go for a third and a fifth.
10:45So it's, it's interesting to me, especially in these aspiring deals, Nick, it's important
10:48to point out like the compensatory picks that get attached to all this stuff.
10:51Like it's not, it's not, it's not really the stretch that it used to be.
10:54Like when Jeremy Fowler's trade primer, he had Yahya Diaby of Tampa Bay is one of the
11:02guys linked to the Browns.
11:03Yahya, who you know is good for, he just had a three sack game this last week and he did
11:07not have a single one up until that, but that's a guy that you're guaranteed six, seven sacks
11:11somewhere in that range, seven, eight sacks in that range, any given season with him.
11:16But like Khalil Mack, Jermaine Johnson.
11:18And by the way, I tend to think Yahya Diaby fits what you want to do more because he's more
11:23of a hand in the dirt guy than Khalil Mack or Jermaine Johnson.
11:26But any one of those three guys, I, maybe Diaby is going to cost the most cause he's still
11:30a young player, but still very doable.
11:33Oh no.
11:33I think he's very reasonable.
11:35I would be shocked if he goes for anything more than a third rounder.
11:38I would put him in fourth or fifth round grade.
11:40And if you can get a fifth rounder for him, you do that immediately.
11:42But like Dallas Goddard's another name out there.
11:44Now, now that's not somebody that Fowler pitched to the Browns because it was on the honorable
11:49mention list, but Jatavian Sanders, I don't know if Sanders actually makes sense for you
11:53because he's not the best blocker in the world, but like he's an undervalued guy that you might
11:57be able to get on a deal.
11:58There's plenty of names here.
12:00I think people, people are really paranoid about giving up a top 64 pick.
12:05I think you could fortify this team, give up a couple of, you know, more, more day three
12:12picks than anything and still have the ammo you want to go get the quarterback.
12:15Here's what I would stress.
12:17I mean, again, you don't get to choose when your team becomes competitive.
12:20And so if they're competitive now, there's no promise you'll be competitive next year
12:23or the year after that or anything in between.
12:25And so, like, I mean, I would do this cautiously.
12:27I would do it with the idea that you're going to end up building towards something that is
12:31really sustainable and here a long time while also acknowledging this is the best chance
12:35under Andrew Barry since Stefanski took him to the postseason and won that playoff game
12:40so many years ago.
12:41216-474-0092.
12:44We asked Darryl for his dream trade targets for the Browns.
12:48And he said, I don't have one.
12:50I don't want to give up these picks.
12:51I think he just didn't have one on the spot was all.
12:53I think if you gave him a few minutes, I think he would have got there.
12:55I think he was just thinking of name candy.
12:57Or maybe he was thinking everything has to be a first or a second round pick.
12:59Is that the idea?
13:00I think that's what dream equals splash, I thought, in his mind.
13:04I think that's what dream is happening.
