00:00I know a party when I see a party, and that was a party last night.
00:04Matt Susack joins us here on Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game.
00:08How are you doing today, Matt?
00:10I'm doing awesome, man. How about you guys?
00:12We're doing fantastic, but not as good as you.
00:16Can you bring us inside the group last night and what this experience was like?
00:23It looked like about 25 of you, and your brother goes three for three with a walk.
00:29They've never gotten him out in his whole career, Matt.
00:33Yeah, it was a pretty exciting time.
00:36I think there was about 20 of us all gathered there.
00:39Obviously, we're all from Northern California, so just soaking it up
00:43and watching that kid get his first hit, he deserves every bit of that.
00:48That kid works so hard, man, and I'm just proud of him, right?
00:52Seen him grow from a little guy all the way through, and he handled it with such poise.
00:57So just proud of the kid, big moment for the family.
01:02We were going nuts.
01:03We're a big Croatian family, so a lot of energy, a lot of cheering,
01:08but we were all there from day one for that kid, so it meant a lot to the whole family.
01:12You keep mentioning the kid.
01:14What's the age difference between you and he and your other brother,
01:17all three of you baseball players I know?
01:20Yeah, so Dan's 10 years younger than I am, and then Andrew is 13 months older than I am.
01:27Oh, wow.
01:27So I'm the mountain brother.
01:29So when I say the kid, in my eyes, he'll always be the kid, right?
01:33Yeah.
01:35So, you know, I remember the days, like, when Andrew was going through a lot of his,
01:39you know, high school stuff where he's doing all the All-American games and stuff.
01:43I was left at home with Dan, and so we would hop on the BMX bike,
01:47and, you know, he would stand on the pegs and stand on my shoulders,
01:51and we'd go to the baseball field, and I'd throw him BP for three hours.
01:54You know, he just never wanted to go home.
01:57So now seeing that and remembering those moments, too, what happened last night was just awesome.
02:03It was just a dream come true for the whole family.
02:06It's a beautiful thing, man.
02:07So Andrew Susack, who, of course, was a Giant once upon a time,
02:10and now the Giants trade for your younger brother, and it all leads to this moment.
02:17That would have meant the world, I'm sure, if it was in any ballpark in the United States.
02:23But the fact that this happened here, and he's playing for the Giants,
02:27what does that mean to y'all?
02:29Oh, it's almost too good to be true, right?
02:33It's, you know, your brother did it, and you have the video of you back when your brother got his
02:38first hit
02:38in the same stadium, the same seats, and now your little brother's there doing it.
02:43It's just he was running around in those halls at 12 years old, right?
02:47So he's known that stadium for forever.
02:50And we've been Giants fans our whole lives.
02:52Like, our whole lives.
02:54So it's just, it's really special.
02:57It's a really chaotic offseason.
03:00Obviously, we didn't anticipate the whole Rule 5 thing, and, you know,
03:03I think I could speak for Dan, but he didn't anticipate it either.
03:05And this is kind of the best outcome, right?
03:08You know, he got met with a lot of pressure, stepped up to the moment, and, you know, he deserves
03:13it.
03:14So, you know, it's just one game, right?
03:16You know, it was a long season.
03:19So I'm just happy that he's enjoying the moment and looking forward for things to come.
03:24So how does that work yesterday when you've got Susacks, as far as the eye can see?
03:29At what point do you realize that he's going to get the start and that all of you various
03:33Susacks need to get your butts to San Francisco and get 20 seats together?
03:40It was so brutal.
03:41I feel so bad for the player ops guy, man.
03:47A bunch of us traveled down to San Diego, too.
03:49And this is the worst part, is I wasn't going to miss this for the world.
03:52You know, he could have been playing in Japan.
03:54I would have been there.
03:56And so I flew down to San Diego with my wife and Chuck.
03:59And my parents went.
04:01Daniel's wife went.
04:03We had a lot of family members down there.
04:05And we thought he was going to play on Wednesday, the day game.
04:07And then we got notified that he wasn't playing.
04:09So we all switched our flights on Wednesday and came home early.
04:13We are landing.
04:15And we're finding out Daniel's going to the game.
04:17He's getting in.
04:19We immediately had regret.
04:20We're like, why did we do that, man?
04:22It was like number one rule of baseball.
04:27But I was happy he didn't get in that bat.
04:29So then we kind of figured, okay, he might get the start.
04:31You got a lefty going in San Francisco.
04:34A lot of family could be there.
04:36And his wife handles it so well.
04:38She just sends out a group chat and says, okay, who needs tickets?
04:43And so they got us all up there.
04:45It's a little tough with a two-year-old.
04:46I'll tell you that much.
04:48Especially being a night game.
04:50His bedtime is 7 o'clock.
04:52So he was not a happy camper.
04:54I think everybody saw that.
04:55So we kind of learned our lesson there.
04:58But, yeah, man, it was just dream come true.
05:02Dream come true.
05:03And I thought he handled himself behind the plate.
05:07Probably the best I've ever seen him.
05:08So it's awesome.
05:11He was incredible.
05:12Absolutely.
05:13So Matt Susack is our guest here on Willard and Dibs.
05:16His brother Daniel is the Giants backup catcher behind Bailey.
05:20Goes three for three with a walk.
05:21He even got a challenge in there last night and nailed it.
05:24You're absolutely right.
05:25Just a perfect night.
05:27Matt, I'm glad you brought this up.
05:29I know you know that there are people listening who are probably, like, I thought the whole
05:33thing was as relatable as all get out.
05:36I've got three kids.
05:37I've been there.
05:38When you've got them out at night and you're like, whoop, this got a little cranky, a little
05:44fast, and it's a tough moment.
05:47Can you share with people the experience of holding your son when Daniel gets his third
05:53hit?
05:55Yeah, you know, online's been pretty brutal, but I think context is important.
06:01Yeah, don't worry about those people.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Exactly right.
06:05No, I mean, he goes to bed at seven o'clock, right?
06:08730 max.
06:10And my dad had been feeding him Dippin' Dots all day, man.
06:15It was like, I knew it was coming, man.
06:19He was only going to last so long, and it just happened to be when the cameras are on
06:23us.
06:25You know, he was cranky all day.
06:27He was running up and down the aisles, and the ushers are so great there.
06:30They helped us out a lot.
06:33But, you know, it got loud.
06:36These two just wants to go down underneath the tunnel to go get gummy bears, man.
06:40I'm just trying to contain them, and yeah, the best way to do that is just to pick them
06:45up, and he decided I didn't like that very much, so.
06:50And that's the way it goes.
06:52That's the way it goes.
06:53I mean, I have a three-and-a-half-year-old whose bedtime is at eight, and you catch her
06:57at 8.05, and God help you, because, you know, these strict bedtimes, if you don't
07:02adhere to them, all bets are off.
07:05All bets are off, man.
07:06All bets are off.
07:07We were just playing defense at that point, man.
07:10It was a ton of fun.
07:13So, he was fine.
07:13I mean, we went down under the tunnel, and he got his gummy bears, and, you know, he
07:18was pointing at Dan on the TV when he was doing his interviews.
07:20So, as soon as he got in that car seat, I'll tell you what, he was out with him three
07:25seconds.
07:25All right, Matt.
07:26Yeah.
07:27So, Matt, he's, I'm sorry, how old?
07:30He's two?
07:30What's his name?
07:32His name's Chuck.
07:33That's Chuck.
07:33Okay, Chuck, Chuck Susack.
07:36Chuck Susack.
07:38Chuck or Charles.
07:38I like Chuck after Chuck Yeager, if you guys know who that is.
07:42Yeah, of course.
07:44My wife likes Charles Leclerc, so we kind of go back and forth with Charles or Chuck, but
07:49my whole family calls him Chuck.
07:51Chuck Susack.
07:52I've got him for, let's see, probably a Giants debut in, like, 2047.
08:02We'll see about that, man.
08:03I hope I didn't kill his passion for baseball last night.
08:05We'll see.
08:06I mean, as long as there's Dippin' Dots wherever he wants to play, I'm sure he'll be in.
08:10Oh, my gosh.
08:12Exactly.
08:13Matt, how'd you all celebrate after the game?
08:17You know, we took it all in.
08:18We all went down to the field, take photos with Dan.
08:22You know, I heard about some stories in the clubhouse.
08:24But the reality is it was 1230, man.
08:26We had to go back home to Sacramento.
08:28I had to work today, right?
08:30So I had taken a lot of time off to go follow Dan, so I had to get some meetings
08:37in today.
08:38So we took off, got home around 1, and we're going to head back to the Bay tomorrow morning.
08:43So we won't be there tonight, but next two games we'll catch.
08:47Okay.
08:47Yeah, Matt, you've earned a nap.
08:49So go get a little shut-eye because we've got another ball game tonight.
08:53You can at least watch it from there.
08:55You bet.
08:56That sounds like a plan.
08:57Hey, man, thank you so much.
08:59Thank you so much for coming on.
09:00It means the world.
09:02You bet.
09:03Anytime.
09:03Appreciate you guys.
09:04Okay.
09:04All right.
09:05Congrats to the whole fam.
09:06Matt Susack, that's Daniel's older brother, but slightly Andrew's younger brother.
