00:00That is Bonte Hill. He is live in studio presented by Ceremony for your various Ford store courtesy of the
00:05River Islands guest line Bonte. So nice to have you here today. How you doing? Good morning guys. How you
00:09doing? We're doing pretty good. I mean the Giants are playing good baseball right now. So that has us in
00:12a good mood. We're talking Giants. We're talking drive. What are we doing? Oh, Giants are playing better. And by
00:17the way, you know, in a way, it's very similar. Luis Arise and the way we're looking at this NFL
00:26draft and how teams make their picks.
00:29A lot of people were out on Luis Arise because of the metrics, because of what was perceived to be
00:34weak defense. Oh, well, he could hit into a lot of double plays. Well, how's Luis Arise been for the
00:39Giants? How's he been? He's been great. But if you had it the analytical way, you would have said no
00:46to him. Instead of just saying, you know what, this guy's a baller. Let me ask you guys something. Because
00:50we're getting to the draft and I don't even know if I like the draft. I really don't. But when
00:54you guys in fantasy football or fantasy baseball, and it's not a like for like this.
00:58We're talking about big boy business. But how do you go about your fantasy baseball or fantasy football drafts? Do
01:03you look at the rankings? You pick players you like? Yeah, I will pass on other guys, but I'll pick
01:08players that I like. But I also understand that the pool of players is so big. By year's end, I'm
01:13probably going to cut, move, wave half my roster.
01:16Same thing with the NFL roster. When they do the opening 53-man roster, how many of those guys are
01:21on the roster by the end of the season?
01:22Or are they on IR or whatnot?
01:24But I also view my first couple of picks very specific. I will not reach egregiously.
01:33Fantasy is so different.
01:34It's so different. You know what I'm saying?
01:35I will not reach egregiously.
01:36It's so different.
01:37Because I am about, there is a value proposition.
01:39If you can get, you know, a running back who's a starting running back in the back of the second
01:44or third round, you feel like you stole money in a league where running backs go.
01:48No doubt. No doubt.
01:49I kind of go about that in the way I do my drafts.
01:52It's like, I put it in my queue, players that I love, players on teams that are going to compete,
01:57players on teams that's going to have highly potent offenses, players on teams that's going to be in position to
02:02score or position to succeed.
02:04And I think we look at the 49ers and their system, they won 12 games last year.
02:09You know, the rhetoric, and I'm not here to tell a fan how to feel, but you can't have it
02:13both ways.
02:13You can't say, we want this, we want this, we want this, and then bitch and moan when you get
02:17this.
02:17Because my thing is, we talked Thursday and Friday about the overall team speed.
02:22They needed to improve it.
02:23Now, I wanted a safety bad.
02:25They didn't get a safety.
02:26At all.
02:27They didn't get a safety.
02:28This tight end class was pretty weak, so I don't really lose sleep over the tight end spot.
02:32They got to go get somebody at a free agency.
02:34They need somebody, but this tight end class was weak in the draft.
02:37Why force a pick when you know that tight end's probably not going to make your squad and you don't
02:41like them?
02:41I'm okay with that.
02:42But overall, they got quicker, they got more explosive.
02:46Now, are these players going to help out on day one?
02:48That's why I can't wait for training camp.
02:49I cannot wait for training camp.
02:51And the same rhetoric last year where they reached, hell, they reached, quote, unquote, for Diomedo Lenore.
02:56How's that working out for this football team?
02:57He was a fifth rounder.
02:58I'm okay reaching on day three.
03:00Did you see his big board, though?
03:01No, I know, but I'm saying I'm okay reaching.
03:03They took Aubrey Thomas ahead of him.
03:05They took Aubrey Thomas ahead of him.
03:06And he's gone.
03:07Yeah.
03:07Gone.
03:08Gone.
03:08Alfred Collins was the second round pick last year on the big board.
03:11He was, like, ranked in the 70s.
03:12They took him 43rd overall.
03:14Alfred Collins helped win the game of the year.
03:17He's been solid.
03:18I mean, he got better and better in the way those coaches and players talked about Alfred
03:21Collins from day one in training camp.
03:23Now, he's not a superstar.
03:24He's a rotational defensive tackle.
03:27But I go back to Philadelphia.
03:28And when those defensive linemen worked out in front of me and Shasky before the game,
03:31and you said, Shasky, wow, look at how deep they are.
03:34You've got to have deep defensive lines.
03:36So I don't care about them reinvesting in the tackle spot if you get productive players.
03:40You can't whiff on it, but you've got to get more productive players.
03:43But I'm not going to sit here today and say that it was the worst draft in the league.
03:46I don't know that.
03:47No, I think it's.
03:48But I don't think any one of us said that.
03:50I don't know who said that.
03:51There's a lot of dialogue about that.
03:53I'm sure there's someone out there.
03:53There's a lot of dialogue about that.
03:55Fans are losing their minds because you took another receiver after that.
03:59We've kind of had receiver vortex, you know, insanity over the last couple of years,
04:03which I understand.
04:04I hear that.
04:05And I think that they're looking at this and they're like, we got dominated in the trenches.
04:09Sure, playmakers were a part of it.
04:11But we got dominated in the trenches.
04:12And it just feels like the team continues to tell us year after year after year that
04:16they don't prioritize offensive line.
04:18That's their prerogative and their philosophy.
04:19And I think a lot of fans just don't agree with that philosophy so that we're going to
04:22be angry.
04:23A couple of things about that.
04:24The first thing is that you're listening to 95.7, the game key, GMZ, FM and HD1, San Francisco
04:28and Odyssey Sports Station, the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live
04:31on the free Odyssey app coming to you live from the Laughing Monk studios.
04:33The other thing is, I think the frustration that comes with reaching Bonte and like you
04:37bring up Alfred Collins, I think.
04:38Do we know they reached though?
04:39Well, we don't know they reached.
04:40We didn't like you hear Bucky Brooks and Greg Cosell yesterday on Willard and Dibs and
04:44they're like, and even Daniel Jeremiah on NFL Network, struggling started getting a lot
04:48of love.
04:49Apparently, we don't know that because we're not in the war rooms.
04:52We don't like I'm not trying to tell fans how to act.
04:54I don't care how you act personally.
04:56I don't care.
04:56Like it's what's cool about sports is everybody can have an opinion and that's awesome.
05:01And some people are going to be proven right.
05:02Some people are going to be proven wrong.
05:04It is what it is.
05:05But all of a sudden you sit back in the NFL draft and by Sunday you're like, wow, Daniel
05:09Jeremiah says struggling started getting a lot of buzz.
05:11I had no idea about that.
05:12Now, personally, this draft, I probably did.
05:17I didn't do as much research on this job because of the end of the warrior season.
05:20Obviously, I just had a kid who's three weeks old.
05:22Right.
05:22So I've been on father duty.
05:23That'll keep you busy.
05:24But a lot of people said this was a weak draft.
05:27But stripling apparently started getting a lot of buzz, a lot of buzz.
05:30And the Niners felt like, you know, by 33, I don't agree with the receiver position.
05:35Like I was shocked.
05:36I was one position for Toledo.
05:37But the guy could be a player.
05:39A couple years ago when they drafted Ricky Pearsall, you and I went so deep on wide receivers.
05:45And the two weeks leading up to it, you and I went through every single receiver.
05:48No one had Ricky Pearsall that high.
05:51And they reached on him.
05:51And we were lukewarm.
05:53And the guy, when he's been out there, has been solid.
05:56A productive player.
05:56Yes.
05:57But he hasn't been out there.
05:58He's been hurt.
05:59And I think the reach tab on Ricky, it might have been accurate.
06:04This is a big make or break year for him, I feel like.
06:07But CJ Stratton, I remember CJ Stratton on draft night.
06:09He was like, man, Ricky Pearsall with Shanahan, man, they got themselves a player.
06:13Once he got picked and got into the system, people thought Ricky could play well.
06:18Now, Stribbling, we don't know.
06:20We know this about Shanahan.
06:21He can scheme guys open, correct?
06:23Mm-hmm.
06:23Yeah.
06:23This guy's got speed.
06:25This guy's big.
06:25I mean, did you see who was their leading receiver in Philadelphia?
06:28It was Demarcus Robinson.
06:29Exactly.
06:29I didn't see that coming.
06:31Kendrick Bourne off the streets had like 300 yards in two weeks.
06:34And that's the brilliance of Kyle Shanahan.
06:36But I think, Bonte, you bring up the reaching thing here.
06:38And I think where the fan frustration comes from is when you're reaching for a guy,
06:42it's like you took this guy when you could have made a move to where you still got that
06:46guy, but you also could have gotten something else on top of that.
06:49That's where I think.
06:50Do we know that, though?
06:51Do we really know that?
06:52I mean.
06:52Because Mel Kiper Jr. says something and his sorry-ass big board.
06:56Like, nobody's talking to Mel Kiper Jr.
06:58No, that's not right.
06:59They're telling Mel Kiper Jr. what they're going to do.
07:00They probably use him as a mouthpiece to get their intel out.
07:04I don't know what it.
07:04See, that's the problem.
07:05My biggest frustration with the draft analysis after the fact is we just don't know what
07:10was on people's big boards.
07:11I don't know that.
07:12I don't know if it was a reach or not.
07:14Well, I mean, you could also make the argument.
07:15We don't know how many people were interested in Dejan Stribling.
07:18I mean, maybe the Niners fed that out there because they want to try and cover their footprints
07:22or cover their ass and be like, you know, yeah, we had to make this pick because, you
07:26know, we thought someone was coming there, coming after him.
07:28Do they know that for sure?
07:29Or were they just saying that because they want us to come out and say, oh, well, that's why
07:34they reach for Stribling is because they thought he wouldn't be there when they wanted to
07:36get him.
07:37That's like my reach thing is, you know, they're sitting on that pick all day long.
07:40They were trying as hard as hell as they could to trade it.
07:43Like was the plan they wanted to trade back, maybe take an edge rusher or a safety at 33
07:48and then they take Stribling later in the second round.
07:50I don't know if that was part of their strategy.
07:52If that was their strategy, they just couldn't execute it.
07:55That's one thing.
07:56But when I see reaches, it's that you reach for a guy that you could have had later and then
08:00still gotten something else on top.
08:02Apparently, the Jaguars are trying to move up.
08:04Apparently, they were going to get past the Texans.
08:06Apparently, this guy wasn't going to get past 50.
08:08We could disagree with the pick off.
08:10Again, I wanted a safety from Toledo.
08:11So when they didn't get the safety from Toledo, I'm like, damn, he's sitting right there.
08:15When they didn't get Jenny's dunker out of Iowa, who sat until the third round, I said,
08:19damn, he's not there.
08:20But again, we got to take him.
08:22We got to take into consideration.
08:24They believe in their system, Shanahan and Lynch.
08:27And when you look at the bottom line since 2019, what's their record?
08:31Despite the drafts, because that's one element of team building.
08:34There's free agency.
08:35There's trades.
08:36They've made true trades to kind of cover up some of the holes with some of these mixed
08:40picks.
08:41What is their record since 2019?
08:42They've had many winning seasons and two losing seasons where the quarterback got hurt.
08:4772 and 45.
08:48You've been knocking on the door.
08:50And they didn't lose Super Bowls because of bad draft picks.
08:52They lost Super Bowls because of poor execution.
08:55That's poor execution.
08:58Let's get into this on the other side.
08:59The second one, you could say one player here or there.
09:02I mean, you took a freaking kicker in the third round and a tight end.
09:05The kicker.
09:05The guy got cut from the team.
09:06He didn't even play.
09:07The kicker made two 50-yard field goals in the Super Bowl.
09:08And he missed the extra point.
09:09Christian McCaffrey.
09:10I know.
09:10Christian McCaffrey fumbled.
09:12Drake Grilock gets vert.
09:13If they would have invested a third round pick into a guard, maybe they block Chris Jones.
09:16I don't know.
09:17It's a woulda, coulda, shoulda.
09:18And that's the thing.
09:19You never know.
09:19And so I think.
09:21Chris Jones is a Hall of Fame player.
09:22He makes plays.
09:23Of course.
09:24Somebody's everybody.
09:25You bring up the 49ers record over the last few years, and it is very good.
09:27And I think the question maybe we can dive into on the other side is, is the 49ers draft
09:31record something you could still depend on?
09:33Because, again, the last four years, their drafts have been kind of underwhelming.
09:37How's last year's draft?
09:38I think it's in.
09:40I think you got.
09:41Stout?
09:41Well, Stout was good.
09:42But that's a solid rotation player.
09:44Solid rotation player.
09:45He played 31% of the snaps in a closeout game.
09:47Would you say those are impact players, though?
09:48Collins was okay.
09:49Collins was okay.
09:50He got better and better.
09:51Did Collins impact the game?
09:53I need impacts in more than just one game, though.
09:56He was solid.
09:57Alfred Collins was solid.
09:58I like Alfred Collins a lot.
09:59When Seattle ran the ball down the Niners' throat in the playoffs, they were hitting the
10:02edges.
10:03Who's the guy missing off the edge?
10:04Mike Cale Williams.
10:05When Mike Cale Williams was playing, they had the sixth best run defense in the league.
10:08He gets hurt if they go down to 20th.
10:10But the proof was there.
10:12When he was in there, they were a top 10 run defense.
10:14Were they not?
10:15Let's continue this on the other side.
