00:00You know who's really fun to hear talk is one Dave Fleming and he's going to join us right now
00:05on the River Islands guest line and he is brought to you by the YMCA join the YMCA of Greater
00:11San Francisco for their youth community festival Saturday May 2nd at Crane Cove Park in San Francisco free for all
00:18ages it's fun live music and activities sign up at YMCA sf.org slash the game Dave glad to have
00:26you here on as you are in Philadelphia you got a couple games
00:30today so that'll be a fun day this first game though feels like a big one for Logan Webb in
00:36terms of kind of showing that he's getting his season back on track the last two starts have been very
00:40good I feel like this is the start today though that for him kind of puts that rough start behind
00:45him and kind of moves forward with him being the pitcher that we know that he is yeah I hope
00:49so hopefully you guys can hear me too we're approaching game time so it's a little loud in the ballpark
00:56I came into the Phillies GM booth so if Dave Dombrowski
00:59he barges in and kicks me out in the middle of this interview you'll know what happened if the phone
01:04goes flinging up against the wall the it's a it's a cool matchup man I talked to Tony Vitello yesterday
01:12about like you know you don't get it as much as we used to in baseball where when I was
01:19a kid you open up the paper that sounds obsolete to anybody who's under 20 now you open up the
01:25paper in the morning and then you look at those starting pitching matchups and you sort of rank the
01:29games by oh my gosh look who's matched up against who like a Logan Webb Christopher Sanchez game is a
01:35really cool game so they need the best out of Webb because I know the Giants had some pretty good
01:41at bats against Sanchez back in San Francisco a couple weeks ago but the chance of that happening two times
01:47are not great you just always expect him to pitch well so when you got your your own ace on
01:53the other side of things you hope you can sort of stalemate it and win it in the late innings
01:57and I think that would be a great outcome for the Giants you know it's been a couple days so
02:02Sunday's win over the Marlins it was a rubber match game in that series and it felt like it really
02:08tilted the homestand you know going three and three after winning the first two against the Dodgers that would have
02:13been deflating in a weird way and going four and two in the way that they did it and Tony
02:18Vitello sticking with Landon Roop I mean is this it's got like a vocal song like feel
02:25to it in terms of his emergence into this rotation it feels like found money 18 in a row to
02:33finish the game from Landon Roop was unbelievable on Sunday and to me he's kind of like one of the
02:40big stories on this team and in baseball right now not a bad comp I actually like that Ryan Vogel
02:47song because Roop's got this sort of very quiet determination
02:52determination and competitiveness that is pretty edgy right now you know I think he's gone from a quiet rookie or
03:00a quiet second year guy to a edgy vet and it happened pretty fast and the only way that happens
03:07is if you back up your attitude with performance and he's done that and like this guy's really good really
03:12good and getting better and working hard to get better so you know fingers crossed he's never really stayed healthy
03:20for a full year I think that's
03:22so we're seeing the performance jump and clearing that bar to become like an upper echelon starting pitcher I think
03:29he's done that in my mind he's done that the next last one for him is okay then prove it
03:34over a full season and you know he looks like he's in great shape he's strong I the future is
03:42very bright for this young man and I like the vocal song stuff because I think that's the vibe that
03:47he gives off you know it's not a loud boisterous personality
03:52but it's sort of like a seething competitor in there when you see him at all times he looks to
03:57me like at all times he's in game mode and he is a fun guy I like talking to him
04:02and he can have a smile or a laugh but not all that often most of the time he's sort
04:07of focused on the competition part of being a big leader Dave going back to Sunday as well it just
04:13feels like his team the resiliency to score that many runs that late in the game that was awesome
04:19I mean like that really was awesome Casey Schmidt's big time swing it's got me thinking and I'm just this
04:25team has got to get creative to find ways to get his bat into this lineup third base second base
04:32first base could they even try him in left field like I don't know how you can sit Casey right
04:39now given how important his bat is to this lineup
04:44I mean for now you don't have to worry about it now I'm with you like if you're kind of
04:49planning ahead thinking ahead maybe you start to at least talk about those possibilities so that when Eldridge is ready
04:57or whatever maybe you've had that conversation and you you've thought about okay if Eldridge endeavors are going to split
05:04first base and DH how can we still have Casey out there because it's a good point you make
05:09uh the the thing about all this kind of stuff is it's it's never a bad thing to have too
05:15many good players and that will sort itself out so for now I think while Eldridge is still in triple
05:21-A working his way up here for now Casey's gonna get every day at bats I mean there's gonna be
05:26almost every game he's gonna be in there and it it feels to a lot of us and I'm sure
05:31to you too like it's a little bit of a waste because Casey's a really talented defensive player so it's
05:38like man that's our
05:39dh usually your dh is reserved for a guy who is not a very good defender but I think they're
05:45prioritizing a you know Devers is the long-term guy over at first base Chapman's signed long-term uh they're
05:53just prioritizing Casey focus on the offense keep getting better and he'll be in there if I because I do
05:59agree with you uh like he's a guy who he's got some flaws as a hitter but if you make
06:06a mistake to him he's punishing it and
06:08the Giants haven't had enough of that this year like the Giants hitters have had a hard time making pitchers
06:13pay for mistakes not Casey you throw it in there he's gonna hit it hard
06:18uh Dave another guy who had a great day on Sunday was Jung-Hoo Lee had four hits that day
06:22and
06:22Tony Vitella said something I believe it was on Saturday that he really liked it was he's getting into a
06:27rhythm of who he is like he's not swinging a bat like a hot bat this is just we feel
06:31who he is right now
06:32um just is this kind of the Jung-Hoo Lee in your opinion that we were kind of expecting to
06:38see when the Giants signed him a couple years ago like are we finally seeing the vision of what they
06:42saw in him coming to fruition
06:46I sure hope so I mean like look I think there are still some things he can get better at
06:53I do uh I still think Jung-Hoo can bunt every once in a while and that can be a
06:59weapon for him
06:59I still think he can be a little more aggressive on the bases not necessarily you know he's not going
07:05to steal
07:0540 for you but I think Jung-Hoo can he's such a smart player I think he studies moves studies
07:12pitchers
07:13I think there's upside for him in in being a better base stealer when he gets on that would expand
07:19his game
07:20so I I still think there's a different level for Lee I think just purely as a hitter he does
07:26look more
07:26comfortable this year he does look you know he had a slow start I talked a long talk with Jung
07:31-Hoo yesterday
07:32um and you know he does sort of feel like maybe the WBC kind of interrupted his preparation for the
07:41year
07:41and so maybe that's why it took him a couple weeks uh being left-handers because I think he's
07:47I think his at-bats against left he's been much better and maybe the numbers don't totally bear that out
07:53and he's I think he agreed with me he said you know I always hit lefties in the KBO but
07:58he said
07:59the lefties here are a lot better I was like yeah uh they're not Jesus Luzardo is not pitching in
08:05the
08:06KBO so he kind of made me laugh uh it is a challenge uh he's still making that transition but
08:12I've seen a
08:13lot of positive progress I just want him to still push the envelope because I think he can be even
08:19better
08:19than he is right now all right we've got Willie Adamas struggling big time right now Rafi it seems
08:26like a good game a couple of bad ones then he gets a good one a couple more bad ones
08:31if you had to
08:33choose who could go on a like a hot streak right now for a week which guy would you pick
08:37if I made
08:38you pick between the two clearly we need them both but which one for you is more pressing more
08:42immediately well I think if you're asking me who's closer I think Devers is closer to being
08:49ready to go like I I think Devers actually has looked I know it the numbers still are really ugly
08:56but I think it's looked closer to me lately I mean he had a huge hit on that Sunday game
09:02that we keep
09:02talking about uh his at-bats the other night against Luzardo we're not very good Jesus Luzardo that was
09:07about the best stuff I've seen in the last couple years like I I know they've been shut out six
09:13times
09:13that stinks way too many games where the offense has just not been there but Tuesday night was that
09:20is in a different category man that's one of those games where a guy just has awesome stuff and over
09:27162 there's going to be about 20 of those where you got to tip your cap and say we were
09:32not winning
09:32that game with him pitching like that so I you know I know Devers it was a little ugly on
09:37uh Tuesday
09:39but I I think his at-bats over the weekend to me look more like a guy who's ready to
09:44get it going
09:44awesome we got Dave Fleming here joining us on the River Islands guest line uh presented by YMCA
09:49Dave a conversation that Joe and I were having yesterday was about like it seems like this team
09:54is really struggling to generate consistent momentum early on in the season where the win a couple games
10:00you think they're about to turn a corner but then they just take like a tough loss and it's like
10:04there's still a couple games below 500 what do you think is going to be the key for this team
10:08to start
10:09generating some momentum going forward and going on some extended winning streaks so they can get
10:13above 500 then start putting some distance between themselves and 500 yeah I mean I think probably the
10:20biggest problem has been the offense but I think the biggest easiest path to smoothing out some of those
10:27uh ups and downs is just more consistent starting pitching you know I I the offense has to get a
10:35lot
10:35better I mean pitching has been sneaky inconsistent too I mean we're talking about Roof and Robbie Ray's
10:42been excellent and Webb's not been as normal but Webb's been fine uh but just too many ups and downs
10:49too
10:49many games where they're falling behind early um and so I think that's the easiest to just finding
10:55footing and getting you know whether you care about soon getting back to 500 and just feeling like
11:02okay now we're on our way we're up we're a contending team we're not a struggling team I think there's
11:07a
11:07little psychological barrier there the easiest way to do that is just have the starters say two times
11:14through the rotation like let's get those starting pitchers all clicking and you know then you can have
11:19some games where even if the offense is scuffling you win two to one or three to two or whatever
11:25that's actually you know you look at the scores they haven't had many of those you know most of
11:29they've been blown out and shut out and then they've had a lot of sort of lopsided convincing wins they
11:35haven't had the formula of like let's win some close giant style pitching duels yeah uh we got Dave
11:41Fleming voice of the Giants brought to you by YMCA so Flem uh Sunday was youth league day and I
11:46knew
11:46little leagues were out there and the pony league in San Francisco SFYBL there were thousands of kids
11:52out there really cool to see the on-field parade and then just to see all the kids in the
11:56stands
11:57um with their jerseys on and everything like that's a special day and you know you're always there for
12:03those ones um how'd it go down on Sunday hello did you hear me I I mean I heard the
12:14first part of
12:14your question then you cut out oh my bad I was saying it was youth league day on Sunday at
12:19Giants
12:19Ballpark and how cool is it to see all those young ball players wearing their jerseys doing the on-field
12:25parade and just seeing them all in the stands I love it I love it my favorite part of winning
12:32three world series was I mean it wasn't the parades it wasn't the ring ceremonies my favorite part of
12:39those three world series was little league enrollment blowing up in the bay area for a decade I love
12:45it that's how you create new fans and you know it's amazing uh I I went out on uh a
12:53night fairly
12:54recently down to a a place you all would know in the marina just to hang out with some buddies
12:59and it
12:59was a very young crowd down there like a lot and I was not amazed but I was a little
13:09surprised at how
13:10many of those young folks wanted to come up and say hi and take pictures that's like a lot of
13:16a lot
13:17of young you know we hear like baseball's an old sport and baseball's audience is old and not in San
13:23Francisco man like the the 20-somethings are into the Giants and into big baseball and I think a lot
13:29of
13:29that is because of the you know the world series like a lot of those kids who are pounding beers
13:34in the marina on a Saturday night are the ones who were taking the little league parade in 2013
13:39like that's the same crowd and so not that I'm spinning this forward to a decade from now when
13:46all those uh kids who are so cute waving on the field or are having uh some fun times uh
13:53out on the
13:54town I'm not doing that yet I don't want to accelerate their childhood but that's how you
13:59build baseball fans forever and yeah that's why it's important for the Giants to get back to the
14:04playoffs and have some more teams that people remember for a long time it's really important
14:09for the baseball community awesome totally agree Dave thank you so much for that I know you got a
14:14couple games to get to so we'll let you go right now uh thank you so much for joining us
14:17and uh have
14:18a great couple of calls today 9 35 in the morning and then 35 in the afternoon back uh in
14:26the bay area
14:26we got two telecasts for you and hopefully the Giants can make it a two win day that would be
14:31fun
14:31those days are twice as good as the one win days I say and live golf all folding we'll we'll
14:37talk about
14:37that next time Dave yeah I'm I'm broken up I'm weeping oh we'll get through it together Dave
14:46go Giants Dave have a good one thank you so much there that's Dave Fleming joining us on the River
14:50Islands guest line courtesy of the YMCA hey Joe there's a lineup out for today's game you want to
14:56hear it all right all right leading off in left field Elliot Ramos against the lefty Chris Sanchez my
15:03guess is they don't want the lefty Jung-Hoo Lee going against the lefty Chris Sanchez because as Dave
15:07just said lefties here have been more challenging in the big leagues than they were for Jung-Hoo in
15:13the KBO understandably so Matt Chapman batting second at third base makes sense he's had some
15:17success against Sanchez Luis Arias batting third at second Casey Schmidt will be your cleanup hitter in
15:23the DH spot Rafi Devers batting fifth at first base Willie Adamas in the lineup batting sixth at short
15:29Jung-Hoo batting seventh in center field Gerard Encarnacion is getting a start today out in right field
15:35he's supposed to hit lefty as well so be nice if he could do that today and Pat Bailey in
15:40the squat
15:41behind the plate he will be doing the catching today for your pitcher Logan Webb so that is your giant
15:47starting lineup for today and I kind of agreed like it would be great if this was a two-win
15:51day I
15:52I feel like you just again as a team that needs to keep building momentum going into a series in
15:57Tampa against a very very good raised team just keep stacking series wins you don't have to
16:03necessarily get sweeps because that it's difficult to sweep in baseball keep stacking series wins and
16:09moving in a positive direction that is the best way for this team to start generating this momentum
16:14until the pitching as Dave said can get you one or two solid turns through the rotation
16:19and Rafi and Willie can start hitting like we know they're supposed to be hitting
16:24Rafi more so than Willie right like do you really have like grand illusions that
16:30Willie's going to be a 270 hitter with 35 jacks no I think I have grand illusions that
16:36Willie can be a guy a 240 hitter with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs and Rafi can be a
16:43you know
16:45a 250 260 hitter okay with 30 home runs I would hope that bad average would be higher but I'm
16:51with you
16:52I mean the way he started out he needs to get hot well I think the batting average get hot
16:55now
16:55the reason I have the batting average so low is because it is so low right now and uh you're
17:01just
17:01gonna be chasing a high batting average for the rest of the year like his batting average from
17:05today onward could be you know like 290 the rest of the year but because he's hitting a crisp what's
17:12he hitting right now Rafi is hitting 211 right now so he's hitting 290 from this day forward
17:18you're gonna be around the 250 260 range who had Casey Schmidt being their best power hitter
17:24I didn't I've said just insane this is a lesson of how unlinear uh development is for these guys
17:31there were so many times over the last couple years that it's not linear but keep going I say that
17:37you said unlinear but that's fine I think it's non-linear words are difficult I could be wrong
17:41I just I just I went steiny on you I totally irrelevant I just got in there I shouldn't have
17:46interrupted you just non-linear non-linear okay unlinear so you were right steiny oh I just you
17:52know Joe the Steinmetz Shasky over here I'm playing he's an educational genius he does he knows he's
18:00probably the smartest host of the station um um Willard I'm gonna give it to steiny steiny's got
18:07the the wisdom through the years you know that's true like steiny's seen so much more than any of us
18:12could possibly imagine um this all to say I know it's not me well yeah it's the if you're the
18:18smartest person in the room you never say that you're the smartest person in the room you know
18:21that's just what smart people do well I just don't think I am that's that's totally fine with me
18:25you're smart in a lot of ways you're smart when it comes to one man can't be this gifted you
18:30know
18:30you're you're smart when it comes to golf stuff except for on Monday apparently terrible on Monday
18:35well in fairness you did just do a show and you had your brother talking your ear off and
18:38you had to carry grandy's bag and all that stuff so it's even the even tiger woods would would wilt
18:45in that situation I'm done with tiger yeah okay maybe that's not the yeah even bryson to scambo
18:50would uh shambo sorry I don't anything it would wilt the big cat oh my gosh what's wrong with him
18:57but it's back on subject here before we hit the break um it just shows yeah it there was a
19:01lot of
19:01times I think the last couple years you could have given up on casey schmidt and I love the fact
19:05the giants have stayed with him stayed with him stayed with him and I saw like this this past
19:09weekend he just looks like such a more comfortable guy in that clubhouse to where he's not you know a
19:15wide-eyed rookie or younger player who's just along for the ride like he is one of the characters in
19:21that clubhouse and I love that you're seeing that from him and he's got the perfect personality for it
19:26um and so yeah very happy to see the casey schmidt premiere bat but just a very important guy
19:32in the clubhouse so love seeing that
19:34you
