00:00And the first round is officially over.
00:02The Niners did not make a pick.
00:05They had 27.
00:06They traded down to 30.
00:08They traded down from 30 to number 33.
00:11And the Niners' picks now, as a result, are number 33.
00:15That's to begin round two tomorrow.
00:17Number 90 in round number three.
00:21They have still a few picks in the fourth round, 127, 133, and 139.
00:28Plus, they gained back number 179 from that most recent trade with the Jets in the fifth round.
00:35The Niners, 33, 90, 127, 133, 139, and 179, have not yet made a pick and still six total picks.
00:44But you have better picks as you got back into the third round.
00:49And you gained, of course, a pick to begin the second round as well.
00:52Yeah.
00:53First of all, I mean, that makes sense by the Seahawks, considering they lost Kenneth Walker.
00:57And, yeah, I mean, you're just wondering what they're going to do at running back.
01:00Charbonnet here.
01:01Charbonnet, yeah, tearing his knee.
01:02But I think for the Niners, this is a draft that no one is going to have an issue with
01:08unless, of course,
01:09there's someone within that range at the back end of the first round that pops.
01:13And it also depends on what they're going to do tomorrow.
01:16They could take Denzel Boston, who's still on the board.
01:19Someone that we were talking about earlier.
01:21There's a couple players that we've identified that are still available for them.
01:25So this may end up being a situation where they get their cake and eat it, too.
01:29I kind of look at this first round for the Niners as there's going to be some weird sports math.
01:35But, like, Osa Odigizua, in a way, was basically the first pick.
01:41Because they ended up turning it into a third, which is what they traded for Odigizua.
01:47And they ended up also getting, I believe, a late fifth.
01:50So they turned that first round pick and a player that it didn't sound like they were in love with
01:55anybody at that position,
01:57number 27, into a proven commodity at a position of need, who's also under contract and in his prime
02:04and ready to help you now, in addition to a couple of other darts to throw at the board later.
02:10So that's how my brain wraps, you know, sort of is wrapped around this first round
02:15and why I don't have a problem with what the Niners did at all.
02:19Even if you take it at face value and say the Niners made no picks in round one,
02:25still feeling as confident as I was that they were still on the board at pick 27 or 30.
02:30Maybe even more confident.
02:32Because at pick 27, whether it's Omar Cooper Jr. or somebody else, okay,
02:36now I know who you got, you can dissect and get into it.
02:38But now it's like the crop of players you could have got at 27 minus one or two guys
02:43are still on the board there, which inherently is better valued
02:47knowing you can get a third round draft pick in return.
02:49So I think John Lynch and co. played the board very smart tonight.
02:53Obviously, I'm sure each fan out there has a guy they wanted the Niners to pick.
02:57I think we all did.
02:58But I think from a consensus standpoint, most of the players that have been mocked to San Francisco
03:03are still there.
03:05Cassius Al, Denzel Boston, and many more.
03:08So it's not as if San Francisco didn't get, you know, one of the guys that were mocked to them
03:13and whether it's Mel Kuyper's draft board or some of the other draft gurus boards.
03:18And maybe to some degree, I feel more confident that they don't have to make that pick
03:22and only get a first round draft pick in a second.
03:25And I can sit back tomorrow and say, wow, pick 33, pick 90.
03:28Or maybe they can make some more moves up tomorrow and get somebody at pick 33, 58,
03:34and go back in the 70s and get somebody else.
03:37So I love what San Francisco did tonight because I think it sets them up for an amazing day two
03:41and three.
03:42Yeah, so okay, the net of the Niners trade.
03:45So they had number 27, they trade away 27, and they get 30, but they then trade that away.
03:50So just the net results of their two trades today.
03:53They give up their first round pick, 27 overall.
03:55They also give up a late fourth round pick and number 138 overall.
04:00They get back the first pick in the second round, 33 overall.
04:04They get back a third round pick, number 90 overall, and a late fifth round pick, 179 overall.
04:09So the price to move down six spots from 27 to 30 plus a late fourth round pick.
04:16You move down six spots and you give up a fourth round pick.
04:20You get the first pick of the second round.
04:22You get a third round pick and you get a fifth round pick.
04:25That is the business for the Niners today.
04:28So you don't have a first round pick, but you don't feel like you're missing out on all that much.
04:32And you get back some pretty valuable assets as a result of being willing to move down six spots
04:37to begin tomorrow's second round.
04:39This also kind of looks like the strategy from a lot of other general managers,
04:43especially at the back end of the draft.
04:45Houston traded up 26.
04:47Miami obviously traded with the Niners to 27.
04:49New England trade, I believe, with Buffalo for 28.
04:53So many picks.
04:54The Jets traded back into the first round with the Niners at number 30.
04:57And then the Titans did the same thing at 31.
04:59So it's like everyone, I think, was kind of trying to figure out how much value
05:04they could squeeze out of the end of this first round.
05:07And clearly the Niners board didn't have any player there that was a first round grade
05:11or worth enough to not get an extra pick throughout this draft and improve one of your other fourth round
05:18picks.
05:18So I like what they did.
05:20I do think there is a little bit of the thread the needle aspect to this that we're going to
05:24find out,
05:25as Sterling said, will be determined by their draft day tomorrow in the second and third round.
05:30But for a team that has, I think, felt a little quick on the draw or like has had an
05:36itchy trigger finger in years past,
05:38especially in the first round, I was pleased to see them not jump for somebody that is probably going to
05:45be available tomorrow.
05:46And you net something in addition.
05:48So and also, too, the last three first round picks they've had have not really worked out.
05:54So maybe a second round pick is what's going to get them to turn this thing around.
05:58I think you're right, Evan, that we've seen whether it's Shanahan himself, John Lynch and company,
06:03they've fallen in love with certain prospects, whether it's the person themselves or the player they don't end up becoming
06:10because they see a bright future, then it backfires.
06:13I'd rather my organization that needs to find star caliber talent or starters immediately be a little bit more patient
06:21and pick and choose, you know, how aggressive they're going to be.
06:25And you saw the Dallas Cowboys trade twice tonight.
06:28You saw the Dolphins trade twice tonight.
06:30The Patriots traded twice.
06:31The Bills did the same thing.
06:33You're seeing all these teams move up and down the draft board trying to squeeze value, like Evan said,
06:37out of the late first round.
06:39And I think San Francisco, you know, kind of leading things off tomorrow on day two,
06:43if they do indeed stick at pick 33, which they may not, for all we know.
06:48You know, trades come in throughout the night and throughout the morning tomorrow,
06:51so we'll see what they do.
06:53But it's really hard to watch this organization be overly aggressive for near a decade.
07:00And it's nice to see them take a step back and say, wait a minute, we don't have to be,
07:04you know,
07:05pedal on the floor, all gas, no brakes.
07:08We can take a step off, kind of survey the landscape and see what gets and brings us the best
07:13value in this year's draft.
07:15Yeah.
07:15I mean, I think a lot of fans out there, and I can count myself in this bucket as well.
07:19You want, like, to get excited about somebody and you want, oh, this is our first round pick.
07:24Like Mikel Williams last year.
07:26I remember, Sterling, you were pumped.
07:28You were fired up about Mikel Williams.
07:30And I know you're still pretty confident in who he's going to be going forward.
07:33Someone's got to be.
07:35Whoa.
07:35Maybe Evan isn't.
07:36We can talk about that going forward in a little bit as well.
07:39But you get past the initial, like, disappointment of we don't have a new player to wrap our arms around
07:45and to get excited about.
07:46And I'm seeing it on the text line.
07:49The 650 writes, we waited all night to see two tradebacks.
07:52This better be worth it.
07:54And he then writes, I mean, with the history of the first round, maybe it's a blessing in disguise, but
07:59it better pan out.
08:01You get past the initial disappointment of not having a guy immediately to get excited about.
08:05And I know our boss, Matt Nahagian, was going to be, like, contacting the college of the team that the
08:10Niners drafted the guy on and try to get his head coach on to join us tonight.
08:14That's going to have to wait until tomorrow, potentially.
08:16So we don't have that to talk about tonight.
08:19But I do think from a strategic standpoint and from a way that this draft kind of broke down, once
08:25you got to a certain point in the first round and the guys that were falling, stopped falling, like Makai
08:31Lemon at number 20 overall, Thienemann at 25 overall.
08:35Once that happened, it's like, OK, the guy that we're going to pick at 27 is probably pretty similar to
08:40a guy that could be available at 40.
08:42So what's the point in making the pick at 27?
08:44And we don't have that many picks in this draft in general.
08:47Well, let's move back, stalk our war chest a bit, because who knows?
08:52Maybe there's a trade up back in the second round from some of the picks that they just gained, and
08:57they make two second round picks tomorrow.
08:58That is also a possibility.
08:59So I think it was pretty smart maneuvering by the Niners today.
09:02Once you get past the initial, like, disappointment of not having a new Niner to celebrate.
09:06Well, and the reality is, too, if, you know, if they were looking to address, say, the edge or a
09:12defensive line, they would have probably had to trade five or six spots to get the guy they wanted.
09:18So instead of, you know, foregoing capital, they accrued some.
09:24And to me, that's, I think, for where the Niners are at, especially given the fact they only had six
09:29draft picks, that was probably more of a sound and safe strategy.
09:33I know people want to see their team swing and go big and stuff, but, you know, if Akeem Mesidor
09:39and Malachi Lawrence were the last two guys that they were really legitimately looking at and saying if they fell,
09:45we'll take them.
09:46Maybe if they fell to 25, you know, you might have been able to move up two spots and forego,
09:52you know, or have a fourth round pick swap, something like that.
09:55I think that might have been a strategy they were interested in, but the guys, I think they had targeted,
10:01especially with the way the rest of the players who fell or drafted at 27 and behind.
10:09It leads me to believe the Niners are really in love with guys that were taken in the early 20s,
10:15and they just did not feel like there was enough to trade for that kind of player, given their cupboard
10:21at this point.
10:22And I don't have a problem with that.
10:25I know that, again, everybody wants some sexy first round pick, and they want to look back and see a
10:30team that kind of, you know, snuck one by another other team and had a pick in the 20s that
10:35popped.
10:36But, and not just because the Niners haven't done it as of late, but I just think that's more of
10:41the exception than the rule.
10:42And so I don't really have a problem at all with what the 49ers did.
10:47Yeah, I could rest easy knowing the Niners didn't make a first round pick just for making a first round
10:53pick's sake.
10:53And they can now look at tomorrow and say, we have pick 33, 58, and maybe something else down the
10:58road in between, you know, pick 58 and 90.
11:01I also don't want fans of the Niners to look at this and say, oh, they messed up, because there's
11:07still so much talent on that board.
11:10Only 32 players have been picked, and the next 10 to 15 very easily could have been maybe picks 20
11:17through 32.
11:18Cassius Howell from Texas A&M is still there, who's often mocked to San Francisco.
11:23I think Vic Taffer from The Athletic mocked him.
11:25Matt Barrow is as well to San Francisco.
11:27T.J. Parker has been, you know, a very common mocked edge rusher to San Francisco, still there.
11:34Zion Young from Missouri, still a powerful guy on the board.
11:38Denzel Boston, obviously, still there.
11:40Jeremy Bernard from Alabama is still there.
11:42You hear names like Emmanuel Pregna and Chase Pesantis.
11:45For all those people saying San Francisco has to find a safety, a guard, a receiver, a defensive tackle, an
11:52edge rusher,
11:53they are in a better position now with the draft picks they got in the trades they made
11:59than where they would have been taking a player at 27 or 30.
12:02So, overall, if you're drafting based on need and filling the multiple holes they have,
12:07you have to be not just pleasantly surprised but overjoyed in what San Francisco got done tonight
12:12from pick 27, 30, now 33 tomorrow morning.
12:15Yeah, so it depends, obviously, what you view as a position of need for the Niners.
12:20You look at, it also depends who you view as the best prognosticator out there
12:26and who you trust in terms of rankings.
12:28But, in general, you're going to hear a lot of these names as potential targets for the Niners
12:32to begin the second round tomorrow.
12:35Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is safety out of Toledo.
12:38He's on the board.
12:38Denzel Boston, wide receiver from Washington, is on the board.
12:42If you want to go edge rusher, TJ Parker of Clemson very well could be the best guy available.
12:48You mentioned Cassius Howell, Sterling of Texas A&M.
12:52He's available.
12:53If you're a fan of Zion Young of Missouri, he's another edge rusher as well.
12:57If you want to go into your offensive line, Chase Basantis of A&M as well, a guard.
13:03He's available.
13:04There are a few cornerbacks available early.
13:07I don't think the Niners are going to use their first pick this year on a cornerback,
13:11but there are a couple of good ones available here as well.
13:14But I probably just named the guy the Niners are going to draft to begin the second round.
13:18Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, Denzel Boston, TJ Parker, Chase Basantis, Zion Young, Cassius Howell.
13:26If they make the pick at No. 33, it'll probably be one of those guys.
13:30Well, I assume the third time's the charm.
13:32I don't think that they'll trade back again, but I could be wrong.
13:36I feel like they, you know, the Jets obviously wanted to get back into the first round,
13:40and a reason for that is probably something that Sterling mentioned.
13:43The extra year does matter to some teams.
13:45But if you're the Niners and you have the first draw of the second round,
13:48you know, it also gives you a night to sleep on it and feel like,
13:52is this the guy that we want? Is he there?
13:55Heck, maybe they wake up and they take no time at all,
13:57and the first person off the board is someone that they've known for quite some time.
14:01And I guess if there is a guy in this range that I feel like they may end up regretting,
14:08it would probably be Omar Cooper Jr., just because that's someone that,
14:12at least from what I've read, they were in love with,
14:15and he had an outstanding season at Indiana as someone who can make contested catches,
14:20someone who can really help a lot of football teams not name the New York Jets.
14:24And it just, you know, to me, that's the one guy that I think the Niners may have liked
14:29that depending on how his first couple of seasons go,
14:32they end up not taking because they could have got him at 27.
14:37They also could have got him when they traded back to 30.
14:39Really quick, Sterling, before you jump back in, I want to correct the mistake.
14:42Like, I read off the Niners' picks, and I forgot the second-round pick of their own that they own.
14:48So the Niners' picks now, 33, 58, those are both second-round picks.
14:53Number 90 in the third, they got three fourth-round picks at 127, 133, 139,
15:00and then a fifth-round pick in 179.
15:02The net of the trades is one-plus pick overall.
15:06They now have seven total picks in this year's draft, Sterling.
15:11Yeah, and I think, you know, while it gives them rammunition to Evan's point of, you know,
15:17maybe the one guy they're going to look back on in a couple years and say,
15:21man, maybe we should have taken him, that being Omar Cooper Jr.
15:24What does it say that they had him in for a top-30 visit, something this team values,
15:30and they still said, no, we don't think he's the right guy?
15:34Does that make you more comfortable, less comfortable?
15:37Does it make you say, you know what, maybe San Francisco made the right decision?
15:41What the fact is, they weren't in love with him at pick 27 or 30.
15:45That does make me a little more confident in their decision-making, but what about you two?
15:49Do you think the fact is they had him in the building, talked to him for a long time,
15:53and then still said no?
15:54Does it make you feel better in trading back from 27, 30, now on to 33?
15:59A little bit. I mean, obviously, you literally traded the pick that the Jets took him in for.
16:05I mean, you decided that that was not going to be your guy,
16:07and maybe it's because they felt like whoever's at the 33rd overall pick,
16:14if they take the wide receiver, you know,
16:17then you're immediately going to be measuring him against Cooper,
16:20because that's kind of the question at this point.
16:23I think at this point, it's too early to tell.
16:25Like, I don't have a problem with what the Niners did at all.
16:28I would have been far more wary if they had traded up for somebody
16:33and used one of their picks to go get someone,
16:35because I'm not sure in this kind of draft if there is a massive sort of game-changer.
16:42And I also just don't think the Niners are in a position in their franchise
16:44where they can forego picks.
16:46They have a lot of elder talent.
16:48They have, as evidence of last season, a lot of injury-prone talent,
16:53and you need bodies.
16:55And so I just feel like them trying to net an extra pick at whatever position,
17:00because while the Niners have not done great in the first round,
17:03maybe even the top three rounds,
17:05they have found some gems in the later rounds.
17:07So I think giving them more bites at the apple
17:09is probably the best strategy at this point,
17:11because odds are, especially if you look at last year,
17:15among these seven guys,
17:17four or five of them are probably going to have to play.
17:19Yeah, like I think in general that the Niners haven't done a great job of late,
17:25and this is probably specifically the Shanahan and Lynch era,
17:27but maybe more so in the last few years,
17:29haven't done a great job playing the value game when it comes to drafting.
17:33They have a guy that they love,
17:36and kind of expectation or, you know,
17:39ADP average draft position where you expect that guy to go,
17:43they kind of throw that to the wayside,
17:45and they say,
17:45I don't care if we're picking him 20th overall.
17:50We think he might be available 35th,
17:53but we don't pick again until 60.
17:54We're going to pick that guy that we want at 20.
17:56Like that kind of is the way,
17:58and not just in the first round,
17:59but also happening in later rounds.
18:01When they have a guy that they like,
18:03they kind of have thrown that value game to the wayside,
18:06and part of the reason why they did this tonight
18:09was probably because they did not have a guy that they loved,
18:12but to get back to your question, Sterling,
18:14they had Omar Cooper Jr. in for a top 30 visit,
18:18and they had the opportunity to draft him,
18:20and they said no.
18:21I like in general them not feeling the need to force something
18:27because of a decision that they made a long time ago
18:31about when they were going to bring this guy in,
18:33and what they learned about him is maybe they don't love him
18:35as much as they thought they did,
18:36and I like them not just sticking to that decision from a while ago
18:41and taking into account new information that they've learned
18:44and kind of playing that value game a little bit more
18:47because there's been times, I mean, Ricky Pearsall is one,
18:50and I'm seeing some of it come through both on Twitter
18:52and on the text line about, well, you gave up a year of control
18:56by not having a first-round pick, and that's absolutely true,
18:59but let me tell you, it does not matter if the player sucks,
19:02so you just got to make sure that you get a player
19:04that you believe in, but the balance there as well
19:08is that it's worth the pick with which you draft him.
19:11If you feel equally as confident about Omar Cooper
19:14as you do about Denzel Boston, and your intel shows you
19:18that one of those guys will be there at 33 tomorrow,
19:21then you make the pick, and maybe that's what,
19:24or you make the trade, and that's, I think, what the Niners did.
19:27Yeah, I just don't think there was anybody that knocked their socks up
19:31at this point in the draft, and who knows?
19:33There may not have been a bunch of players in this draft overall
19:35that they felt like were true game changers,
19:37so I think the Niners, and overall, I feel like they kind of looked
19:42at this draft as just being an extension of the offseason.
19:46I think they did a ton of their work already this summer,
19:49and they got a lot of good character guys.
19:51They got a lot of prototypical 49ers.
19:53I think they have relieved themselves of the majority of,
19:58you know, kind of the negativity of last season.
20:00I was curious to see if we might see a draft day trade
20:03with Brandon Ayuk, which we obviously did not.
20:06Could happen tomorrow.
20:06It could happen tomorrow.
20:07Or Saturday.
20:08Yeah, that, I mean, he's not going for a first-round pick, so.
20:11Well, no, but that's true, I guess.
20:14Ty Simpson went 13, Mark.
20:16Anything's possible.
20:17That's a good point.
20:17Anything is possible.
