The San Francisco Giants just made history for all the wrong reasons. Joe Shasky and Marc Grandi (filling in for Joe Spadoni) react to the soul-crushing doubleheader sweep in Philadelphia. From Willy Adames’ defensive lapses to Rafael Devers’ league-worst OPS, the guys break down why this high-priced roster feels like the "same team from the last decade," only more expensive. Plus, a deep dive into the questionable coaching decisions that cost the Giants a chance at victory.

00:00well i was gonna say happy friday but it doesn't feel like a happy friday because of what happened
00:04in philly to the giants yesterday welcome in it's the morning roast no spadoni today
00:10grandy in so shaski and grandy with you man shaski that giants doubleheader last night
00:17consecutive walk-off losses at the hands of the phillies in philadelphia you had both those games
00:23won it felt like and yet you come out of that uh losing both and you get swept in philly
00:27coming
00:27into that series philly was the the the worst team in baseball and the giants lose all three games
00:32good morning i just yeah i know i just sorry no no i mean it's just this team just
00:39you know the niners drive me crazy the warriors drive me crazy this team the part that's so
00:45maddening and like there's the small there's like the two blown losses yesterday yep and then then
00:50there's like the macro which is like i'm not sure i believe in this you know core of guys that
00:55they
00:55have right now let's go to a small first
01:00we got a shortstop who's got paid 182 million dollars there was a giants tax i acknowledge
01:06that people will say that's flawed thought process but i don't think you're bringing him in unless you
01:11dramatically overpay that being said we probably overpaid for adamus and we all like him i like
01:17him like i really like him i want to root for him i really really do like him like i
01:21do as a person
01:22he seems like a great guy as a teammate i'd love the clubhouse guy i'd love to play with him
01:27like
01:27legitimately we probably gave him 85 million dollars too much and that is a that's a lot i mean
01:34like is anyone gonna deny that and and i was here for the signing and i understood why you brought
01:40him
01:40in i understood why you overpaid him but that even being said you still probably overpaid for like 85
01:46million that's a tough play in the hole but that's a play how many athletic you're talking about the
01:52end of game one yes infield walk off yes it's a tough play i'm not denying that it's not a
01:56tough play
01:57but he has no mustard on his throat and when you pay a guy to be your shortstop not just
02:03for the now
02:04but all the way to 2031 which is five years from now 2032 six years from now you got to
02:12be able to
02:12make that play in your prime what's it going to look like two three years oh yeah down the line
02:16and and you know i have questions about him playing the shortstop position just a calendar year from now
02:23and and then i i haven't even gotten to the at-bats well the at-bats is where i'm concerned
02:26the most
02:27top of the 10th of game two runners on first and third nobody out after the terrible in a mile
02:32outside
02:32of the after the terrible decision by hector board the third base coach to not send drew gilbert on
02:37a single up the middle by ramos that got deflected at second base which makes it the easiest send in
02:42the
02:42history of sends i know but all right still first and third nobody out get a run in just give
02:46us a
02:47positive a be a productive out yes willie and what does he do as you mentioned swings at a ball
02:51that
02:51his feet off the plate strikes out not even close and and i just don't understand the two striker push
02:56but but back to willie for a second like i think he's got to make that play to defend ryan
03:00walker for
03:01a split second i think he's got to make that play that's a play a 200 million dollar shortstop
03:05should make is it tough absolutely i seen crawl make that play a gazillion times yeah and was never a
03:11200
03:11million dollar shortstop that being said we all know crawls way better than him defensively
03:15it goes without saying ryan walker fair or not the stats tell you he has the fourth most blown
03:22save since 2025 he is not a closer i don't think that's a knock on him he can be a
03:28useful bullpen arm
03:30for you somewhere in the seventh or eighth maybe it's certain high leverage situations he's not a closer
03:35and when randy rodriguez went down with tommy john last year after you traded away uh camilo duvall
03:41your job as a front office executive must suppose he was to solidify the closer spot every bullpen
03:48that has ever been good whether it be the giants or teams elsewhere you work closer down do you not
03:55yeah everyone falls in line after the closer is solidified closing games is very difficult the ninth
04:02inning is its own unique you know tapestry that you have to navigate and ryan walker for whatever
04:09reason buffers in the ninth inning more times than not he's like he always falls behind 2-0 first guy
04:15he faces because because it's just and that's what happened last night yesterday and then adales
04:21garcia let it off with a single because he's in the count and and logan webb 13 strikeouts was
04:26absolutely brilliant he's been scuffling coming into this game he's not 13 strikeouts or 13 whiffs excuse me
04:3213 swing and misses excuse me six or seven strikeouts yes he was great no he was awesome he was
04:36absolutely awesome but we haven't seen the swing and miss stuff from him in a long time and i think
04:41that was the big thing for me and he looked fantastic and for them to not capitalize on how many
04:46runners left on base how many in game one oh i'll look it up for you 14 15 if you'd
04:53have told me it was
04:5425 i'd have believed you nine left on base in game one in game one only nine wow 15 left
04:59on base in
04:59game two there you go so 24 left on base yesterday and everybody's terrible you got 450 million dollars
05:07in dead weight offensively right now you're talking about devers and adams yes yeah you know i'm looking
05:13at just like overall this year you get two guys with 40 strikeouts two guys with 40 strikeouts they have
05:22a combined 232 at bats and a combined 80 strikeouts that's almost half the at bats are strikeouts and
05:32those are supposed to be your two best hitters i don't know two best hitters i don't know and and
05:37and the two like cornerstone pieces of buster posey's tenure i know and so far they've been
05:44unmitigated disasters i'm doing cartwheels in game two because devers got a sack fly
05:50and a cni single yeah which was like we're like get through get through get through get through thank
05:55you god and if the runner wasn't an emotion it's a double play but we're celebrating it it's just that's
06:01how bad things are how about this rafael devers his ops and i know you know maybe not everyone knows
06:06what that stat means it's on base plus slugging it's a good it's a really good measure of i agree
06:10of how good of a hitter you are it's better better indicator than the batting average my favorite of
06:16all the offensive statistics rafael devers ops is 5 30 among every major league baseball player this
06:23season with at least 120 plate appearances that is worst of all major league hitters with 120 or more
06:31played appearances 5 30 ops worst in the entire game were you listening to me the other day this
06:37is two days ago i play fantasy baseball i'm not sure if you do not this year i have in
06:41the past
06:42where do you think rafael devers in baseball stacks up as a fantasy player this year this year oh i
06:48mean
06:48i don't know like 771 after i was gonna guess 300 wow oh no 771 he is the 771st ranked
06:58baseball
06:58that's impossible how that's exactly oh god are you kidding me like he'd be one of the 120th best
07:05guy in fantasy baseball there are 700 people in the majors
07:10that's crazy it's jaw dropping i don't know what the what the salute like what do you do
07:18now we get to devers devers um i'm still doing the deal as crazy as it sounds i'm still doing
07:25the deal
07:25he cannot be your best player for like six or seven reasons right there's there's like my best player
07:34has got to be a forward-facing person like you you normally need your best player to be someone
07:39who's of great stature who can stand in front of the media and and talk to everyone it doesn't
07:44have to be that way but it's a lot easier bobby witt jr for example aaron judge for example now
07:50does shohei stand in front of the media and act as the number one for the dodgers not necessarily
07:55but they have freddie freeman they have other stand-up guys man but mookie's not necessarily
08:01like the clubhouse guy who was the guy in boston when it was mookie and endeavors it was not those
08:07two well mookie was more so than than what they won a world series no doubt but i mean we
08:12went
08:12through that team the other day and and they had a lot of really good contributors jd martinez was a
08:16lot older and and he was like a veteran presence that they had brought in and he was a clubhouse
08:20guy
08:20um it's just we're in the same spot the giants and this is where i get i always get depressed
08:29because at least the niners and i've talked about like the kind of the bermuda triangle of
08:33loser-ness that they've been stuck in and it's driven me insane the giants just make me really
08:38sad and the reason why i feel really sad is that it just feels like though the front office has
08:44changed
08:44coaching staff has changed they're in the exact same spot it feels like they've been for about a
08:50decade meaning not good enough and just good enough to make you rip all your hair out of your head
08:57and they just don't have the prerequisite stud that everything can be built around
09:04and i thought bringing in these guys i thought devers would be that he's been awful i mean devers
09:10for almost a decade has been one of the best hitters in the entire game and then he comes to
09:14the giants and he had an all right second half of last season he's all right but this year i
09:19mean
09:19he's legitimately the worst hitter in baseball like look we we've witnessed some amazing times as giants
09:25fans and there's a lot of fan bases out there that have it worse from a macro perspective but it
09:30feels like this team is cursed offensively like we're we're sitting here and we didn't do a lot
09:34of shows leading up to the to to uh the start of the season but the conversation in general was
09:39this
09:39has the possibility to be one of the giants best lineups in a really really long time let me give
09:45you they're the worst offense in baseball well they have the what is it almost dead last in homers
09:50how does this happen almost dead last in walks they've got some quality bats almost dead last
09:55in ops you know it's the most you want you want to hear a stat you want to blow your
10:00guys's minds
10:00well i don't know if i'm ready can you name who i mean you know who last year led the
10:04team in
10:04stolen bases right was it chapman no it was uh it was adamus with 13 oh was it adamus yeah
10:09jung
10:10huli i believe had like 12 chapman got hurt so he missed a bunch of time i think he had
10:13double
10:14digits yeah but do you know who leads the team in stolen bases this year this is just i i
10:20saw this
10:20and i go you can't no no is it drew gilbert louise arise louise arise with four dead last in
10:29stolen
10:29bases and so and then i get to the defense and the defense has been just a little like all
10:34over the
10:35place they've got one of the worst left fielders defensively in my eyes ramos is just an adventure
10:39atrocious defensively um chapman has had moments where he's been brilliant he's also been under
10:46performing defensively at third base for a man of his caliber i have big legitimate sincere questions
10:52about a domicile shortstop long term arise has been a bright spot first base adventure doesn't begin
10:58to describe it defensively casey schmidt made a play over his shoulder in foul territory yesterday
11:02and i'm going there's not a chance to hell devers makes that play not a chance and then you get
11:07to
11:07like the bright spots jungoo lee big bright spot farhan era you know that deal didn't look great
11:13last year yeah it's looking great for a couple weeks right now i'm really happy with jungoo lee
11:19casey schmidt oh my god he's been amazing he's been incredible he's their best hitter by far and he's
11:25it's so ironic he's known for the glove in the arm and what's the thing that's keeping him in the
11:30bad it's where would they be without him drew gilbert though not the most spectacular though he can't
11:36be measured by box score similar to gp2 he's a guy you just got to kind of watch the games
11:42and you go
11:42he brings a lot of little things to the table now is he is he the greatest no he's probably
11:48a fourth
11:48outfielder but i like drew gilbert but he's not what he did at the end of the game of course
11:52two
11:53things number one he waited to catch it till the very end to see if that guy would jump off
11:56the base
11:57which was genius and then trying to throw a lollipop in you know from dead center field without
12:02throwing her on a on a all the way on the fly to home plate it was a pretty good
12:06throw it didn't
12:07matter because it was so deep he had no chance of throwing garcia out but but i love i like
12:11drew
12:11gilbert and then we haven't even gotten to to the situation in the second game where i just i don't
12:17i don't know what the third base coach is doing last year we had matt the win will will williams
12:21at
12:22third base just waving guys home no matter what and they're getting thrown out by a mile we've had
12:27jung lee get hurt on a play at home where he starts at first and it's a single up the
12:33middle
12:33and we're treating this guy like he's williams in his prime and we're writing a novel about you know
12:38some play that nobody ever actually saw because that's what happens with williams stories there's
12:42no video to corroborate it he scored from first on a single to right it was a flare to right
12:47he scored
12:47from first they're sending jung lee a week ago two weeks ago and he gets hosed at the plate it's
12:53one
12:53of the most ridiculous plays i've seen all year and then yesterday next trainings basing up the
12:57middle and we're not sending drew gilbert yeah so gilbert's the the the lead runner the automatic
13:03runner at second to lead off the 10th inning don't get it ramos a single up the middle ticks off
13:08the
13:08second baseman's glove which keeps it far away from the center fielder but it rolls far enough away
13:13from the second baseman that it's an easy send and gilbert would would score standing up yet for some
13:19reason the third base coach hector board uh holds him now luckily the giants actually converted later
13:25on in that inning and scored a run no they didn't score a run in that in that moment in
13:29that 10th
13:30inning um but i don't know like if i were to ask you shasky what do the what do the
13:36giants do well
13:38what do they do who are what's their identity okay drive me drive you crazy nuts
13:45they do a very good job of that myself out there good job good job you know i was listening
13:49to a
13:49song driving him i love blank blank that's my blank and problem and uh i think it's asap rocky is
13:56that
13:56is that the guy's name is that what it is i love bad baseball as in the giants that's my
14:03big problem
14:04i know my team sucks it's my problem and i just it it's driven me into this this like chaotic
14:12spin cycle
14:14i saw the keaton win situation playing out a mile away and i knew when they didn't score
14:19with the drew gilbert uh play coming around i go they're gonna lose this game on a walk-off
14:24i mean essentially i walked off twice in one day you not essentially that happened it's just
14:31um it's the first time that's happened to the giants where they lost both games of a double
14:37header in walk-off fashion first time that's happened since july of 1956
14:441956 1956 a young marty lurry was covering the game
14:50i just i've lost my mind with this team no like like am i wrong it feels like the exact
14:55same team
14:55for the last decade it's way more expensive this is worse because it's more expensive and because
14:59there's more talent here at least on the offensive side i i keep thinking about this one element
15:07individually i really like chapman individually i really like adamas as like as guys and as ball
15:14players like i do like them like i do and i like the concept of raffi devers i haven't been
15:20sold on
15:21what i've seen he's had moments here and there but overall he's been so underwhelming i don't think
15:28anyone would argue that i don't buy in on them being the three best players on a team that's
15:33doing anything significant and that feels like i'm being contradictive and it feels like i'm being a
15:38hater and i'm not i do i want to like those guys like i like willie i like chapman like
15:43generally
15:44i i want to like devers like the baseball card there's stuff to like in a giant's uniform it hasn't
15:52been that pretty chapman hasn't been terrible this year yeah but he's gonna be your third baseman
15:56for the next five years i got bigger issues with with adamas and endeavors right now i know but
16:03he's he's also on 150 million dollar yeah no he's not cheap either you basically have i'm not paying
16:08chapman to be the the team's best hitter no but i'm paying endeavors to be the team's best hitter
16:12you have 83 million in those guys salaries tied up till 2030 83 million and right now that's what a
16:20third of their payroll devers and adam is struggling as much as they they have also makes chapman look
16:26worse 100 but because you you need it from somewhere and if those guys aren't doing it
16:30you're next gonna look to chapman but chapman hasn't been bad but he's he's never gonna carry
16:34an offense no he's a six seven hitter and guess what williams is a six seven hit probably right
16:39and so like they're miscast in this situation and it's just it sucks because i want to like love this
16:45guy these guys and i just don't believe in them as the three best players of a team that's gonna
16:49go
16:49anywhere like i just don't where would they bat in the in chapman and adamas where would they be
16:54batting in the padre lineup seven eight six seven eight probably six ish yeah what about the dodgers
17:00oh like eight okay chapman would be batting eight in the dodgers lineup heck the cardinals are above
17:05500 right now what are you batting in the a's lineup well the a's lineup is really good like i'm
17:11just
17:11trying to go like some of the national league teams like look at the cubs lineup where they bat in
17:16the
17:16cubs line towards the bottom okay right and and this is the heart of your order and we've been moving
17:21these pieces around and the reality is like if these guys don't play well we are the titanic
17:25we're in trouble absolutely kc schmidt has salvaged the season and they're 13 and 18 after a month yeah
17:31we're coming to you live from the laughing monk studios laughing monk righteously brewed in san
17:36francisco the morning rush one sec brought to you by golden state serving the bay area for three
17:40generations when you succeed we succeed visit goldenstate lumber.com i want to get into the second game
17:45and the situation with swarber coming up the guy in the bullpen i thought this was the second time
17:51this week tony vitello um misplayed his hand earlier in the week i thought he stayed with with mallee too
17:58long and then in this game i thought he he didn't go to the right guy let's let's break it
18:03down the other
18:03let's do it
18:03let's do it
