00:00Giants get a victory, and one of the guys who was absolutely an integral part of that
00:05is none other than, and I guess we have to call him first baseman.
00:09We call him shortstop, third baseman, utility man.
00:12Right now, he is the Giants' first baseman,
00:15and he joins us on the River Islands guest line here, Willard and Tibbs, 95.7 The Game.
00:19It's Casey Schmidt.
00:20Hey, Casey, what's going on?
00:22Hey, how's it going, guys?
00:24It is going very well, and much better than maybe it had been over the weekend.
00:29So why don't you give us a sense of what kind of, I don't know if the word is relief,
00:34but how did it settle everybody down to finally get one last night?
00:39Yeah, I mean, I think it was good just to get that first one in the win column.
00:44Yeah, you know, just playing, relaxed, playing our game, having fun,
00:47and, you know, just trying not to press too hard.
00:50I mean, obviously, the Yankee series didn't go, you know,
00:53what any of us would have imagined.
00:56But, yeah, just coming out and getting that little reset
00:58and going out here in San Diego and playing and getting that win.
01:02And for Tony Vitello, his first win as a big league skipper,
01:06what was that like for him when he got back in there with you guys in the clubhouse?
01:09Did you do something, you know, kind of special, quote-unquote, for him?
01:14Yeah, we got him a little bit.
01:16Yeah, I mean, his first win at the major league level, you know, first of many.
01:22So, yeah, that was cool, you know, to have him come back, come into the locker room,
01:25and then we're all celebrating.
01:27And, yeah, it was a special moment for sure.
01:30Casey, he said that, yes, there was beer, but his eyes were burning,
01:34so it was other stuff too.
01:36My mind went to, like, I don't know, Ben Gay.
01:38Like, can you give us a little bit of an idea of what the hell Tony got doused with last
01:43night?
01:46I'll leave it at a little bit of everything.
01:48I'll leave it at that.
01:48Okay, all right.
01:50Oh, so it's maybe, like, we're a little risque here, maybe.
01:54It was, I mean, it was awesome.
01:56It was a lot of fun, and he loved it.
01:59Can you give us a little bit, I think everyone's interested right now
02:03to know how big leaguers are receiving somebody who's never managed
02:09or coached in the big leagues before.
02:10So I think that what you're talking about maybe speaks to the relationship a little bit,
02:15but how would you describe the relationship you players have with Tony?
02:19Yeah, I think it's a close relationship.
02:22You know, the way that he, you know, kind of gets everyone together.
02:25And, you know, we all, sorry about the noise.
02:28I don't know if you guys can hear that.
02:29No, you're good.
02:29You're good.
02:31There's some carts going on behind me.
02:34Yeah, I mean, it's just, like, a close relationship.
02:36And, you know, it's only getting better.
02:38Everyone's just building that relationship.
02:39We all got to build it during spring training.
02:42And, you know, just having him around, and, you know, it's been awesome.
02:46He's been great.
02:47He's been great.
02:48And, you know, we all really love, you know, having him around.
02:51And he came out, and he talked about, like, before the opener,
02:54a fire and brimstone speech.
02:56And, you know, before the first of 162.
02:58162, what is that like?
03:00And having a manager come out and that kind of a speech.
03:03What was that moment like before the start of the year?
03:06Yeah, I mean, he got us going.
03:09I mean, obviously, like I said, you know, the series didn't go as planned.
03:13But, yeah, we just keep going.
03:15We keep kicking.
03:16Keep playing hard.
03:17Keep playing our game.
03:19And, yeah, just try not to do too much.
03:20I think that's kind of the name of the game.
03:23I think that's kind of when things start to go a little bit south is when you're out there trying
03:27to do too much,
03:28whether that's, you know, in the field, you know, hitting, pitching, whatever it is, you know.
03:33But just try not to do too much.
03:34Just going in there and just doing your job.
03:36I think that's, you know, just the key thing.
03:39Giant Casey Schmidt is with us here on Weathering Dibs, 95-7 the game.
03:43And I have to say it that way.
03:45Giant.
03:45Because I don't know what – if someone, like, walked up to you and they did not know Casey
03:50and they're like, oh, you're on the Giants, what position do you play?
03:53What would you say?
03:55I'd say a little bit of everything.
03:58And what is your – what's your comfort level with that?
04:01We know your story.
04:02You came up as a left side of the infield player.
04:06And, by the way, a very, very good one.
04:08So can you take us through the journey of bouncing around the infield the last couple years?
04:14Yeah, I think, you know, maybe early on it was a little tough for me
04:20just to kind of have to bounce all those different positions around.
04:25You know, first it was shortstop and, you know, then it was, you know, then it was second.
04:29Now it's first.
04:30But I think over the last – these last, you know, two seasons,
04:35I think just getting more comfortable with, you know, being, you know, used everywhere
04:39and not letting it kind of affect me.
04:43And just, yeah, just being as comfortable as I can, being on the field,
04:48I think that's a huge thing for me.
04:50And I think this spring training was – it was big for me because I got to –
04:54I got to play every single position.
04:56So I got to, you know, touch all those positions and play there
05:00and work things out that way.
05:02So, yeah, I think it's all just because of spring training.
05:05It helped me, you know, gain that confidence
05:07and, you know, feel a lot more comfortable at every spot.
05:10So last year you played first for the first time in the majors.
05:13When you get the word that you're going to play first,
05:15what's the process of getting a first baseman's glove?
05:18Do they have an extra?
05:19Do you go out and get a new one?
05:21Like what's that like when you get told that you're going to play first base?
05:25Yeah.
05:26So, I mean, it was in Houston.
05:28I remember the night before they just told me to take ground balls over there
05:33and I took ground balls, you know, did my thing.
05:35I was using Sam Huff's first base glove and it wasn't really comfortable on my hand
05:41because, you know, I've never put my hand in one.
05:45But, you know, once that started getting implemented a little bit more,
05:48then I got my own glove.
05:51And then now I got my own glove, used it for that year,
05:56and then got my, you know, a personalized one.
05:59You know, I just got a random glove off the website just because I needed a quick one.
06:04But, yeah, I got my own glove now, so it says the schmiz on it.
06:08I love it.
06:10Yeah, I love having it now.
06:11So now my hand fits good in it.
06:13I'm comfortable with it.
06:14So now it's all good.
06:16You said the website.
06:16Is it like firstbasemansgloves.com?
06:21No, it was off the Rawlings website.
06:25I can't use anything else.
06:26I've got to use Rawlings.
06:27So I got it off the Rawlings website and had my agent send one over overnight shipping.
06:34Perfect.
06:34Like, all of a sudden I imagine Casey Schmidt, like, in bed in a hotel scrolling through Instagram.
06:42And because you guys were talking about firstbasemansgloves,
06:45they're all popping up in your feed.
06:47And you just grabbed one.
06:49You're like, yeah, I'll play there, too.
06:52Yeah, exactly.
06:53I was like, well, I do need one.
06:54So I guess this one will do.
06:55I got like a brown one.
06:58I got a brown one off the website, expressed it, expressed it in, overnighted it, got it broken in.
07:05And I used it.
07:06I didn't really like it that much.
07:09And then I put my own, you know, my own little touches on a new one.
07:14So now the new one, you know, it's black with a little bit of purple on the inside because of
07:18the City Connect.
07:19And, yeah, now I love it.
07:21Dude, you're a gem.
07:23If someone says, what kind of firstbasemansgloves did you get?
07:26You go brown.
07:29Like, that's it.
07:30You're just like the color.
07:31Is that what matters to you most?
07:34I didn't know nothing about the sizes or anything.
07:38I know the sizes of the other ones.
07:39But the first base glove, I don't even know what size my first base glove is.
07:43I just saw it and I was like, all right, this is what we're going to rock.
07:45And then we went from there.
07:47There you go.
07:48Hey, have you tapped the helmet yet?
07:52Say that again?
07:53Have you tapped the helmet yet in a game?
07:56No, I haven't yet.
07:57I haven't gotten a close one yet.
07:59But, yeah, looking forward to it.
08:02Okay.
08:02Now, did you guys experiment with it in spring training?
08:05And I think fans would love to hear what's the team-wide strategy?
08:10Because you can only be wrong twice and then they're gone.
08:14So what do you guys talk about and how do you approach replay?
08:19Yeah, I think we just kind of just did it, you know, at-bat changing or, you know, score changing,
08:24something like that, something that's going to be, like, pretty significant.
08:27Unless you know, like, 1,000% sure, like, that's not, you know, that's not a strike or whatever it
08:33is.
08:34Same with, like, the replay and stuff like that.
08:36You know, you want to be very precise with how you're using it and, you know, when you're using it.
08:41And it makes sense because, I mean, you've got spots where you could be, you know, selfish with it, I
08:46guess.
08:46If it's a one-two count in the third inning with nobody on base and you really, really want to
08:51use it.
08:51But if you're wrong, then that might cost somebody later in the game.
08:55Is there any sort of, like, internal conversation or internal rule about, like, you know, you have to do it
09:01in a certain spot?
09:02Or if you're really right, you can go ahead and use it.
09:05Yeah, I think it's just really up to you whether you think it's, you know, at-bat changing or, you
09:11know,
09:11could potentially, you know, affect the score in some way.
09:15But, yeah, it's kind of, you know, it's on you to see, to, like, feel out those situations.
09:21Casey Schmidt with us here on 95.7 The Game.
09:24Hey, the guys in the other room have one they want you to answer, Casey.
09:27How many shirts have you personally cut the sleeves off of?
09:32How many shirts have I cut the sleeves off of?
09:34Yes.
09:36Let's see.
09:38I like to cut the sleeves off of, like, the hoodies.
09:42Right.
09:43I think that's why the question.
09:44Yeah, that's why the question.
09:46Yeah, I like to do that.
09:48But I don't go with, like, the straight, like, tank top hoodie.
09:50I always leave, like, some sleeves on it.
09:53But I do have a turtleneck that I did cut the sleeves off.
09:58I made a crop top like Bader's.
10:00So I don't know if you guys have seen Bader's crop tops, but they're pretty electric.
10:04Well, we're starting to get to know Harrison a little bit.
10:09And my partner here actually just a second ago goes,
10:12he kind of looks like the right-handed Drew Gilbert.
10:15Can you give us a Drew Gilbert versus Harrison Bader personality breakdown, please?
10:20Oh, man, they're both one-of-a-kind.
10:22They're both treats.
10:24So, yeah, they're both one-of-a-kind.
10:27I mean, they're awesome.
10:28And what's that like?
10:30I mean, he comes in, and now it's, what, four games in?
10:32He hits the first home run.
10:33And I was telling my partner, Mark, that by the time he got to second base,
10:37he'd already flipped the bat, gestured up, two hands to the heavens.
10:41Is this guy just an absolute blast to be around?
10:45Oh, yeah, absolutely.
10:47I mean, he's a great person to be around.
10:48He brings a lot of energy.
10:50And, yeah, he's one-of-a-kind.
10:52You know, he's awesome.
10:54You know, with what he brings, you know, to the field every single day,
10:57you know, the personality he has.
10:58You know, he's awesome to be around.
11:01Hey, Casey, going back to first base for a sec,
11:04let's say Rafi Devers' hamstring gets all better, or who knows,
11:08maybe in a few weeks Bryce Eldridge is up on the team.
11:11Have they talked to you at all with regard to what is the plan for you this year?
11:18I have no idea.
11:19I'm just going in and going out and playing every day.
11:22So whatever is asking me, that's what I'm going to do.
11:25I don't have any, you know, I don't know anything other than that.
11:29Ron Washington added this year as the fielding coordinator,
11:32the defensive coordinator, for lack of a better way to describe it.
11:35Are you still out there taking ground balls at second and at short,
11:38or right now are you just primarily focused on first?
11:42Right now, I mean, right now just doing first,
11:45because that's kind of where most of my reps are.
11:47But I'm imagining at some time here,
11:49so I'll just go around and just touch the different positions
11:52and just kind of just do everything I can just to stay ready at every spot.
11:58Okay, Casey, it's time for the big finish.
12:02A couple of fun questions on the way out the door.
12:03Are you ready to go?
12:05Oh, yeah, I'm ready.
12:06All right, let's find a lot of fun.
12:09All right, Casey, you won't remember this,
12:11but you played this with us once before,
12:13and we have a clip of you saying that your favorite nickname
12:17for something you did on the field is when that ball got Schmidt on.
12:21So that's what came out of the last time we did this.
12:24That was so good.
12:25Yeah, so here we go again.
12:26The two categories, you pick one category.
12:29The categories are Casey at the bat or Aztec.
12:36So let's go Aztec.
12:38Let's see what we got here.
12:40Aztec.
12:40All right, here we go.
12:41What's the best part of being an alum and going to San Diego State?
12:47I think just going to be able to go back to the field,
12:51go back to the stadium.
12:52I do some of my lifts and stuff there,
12:58my beginning of the offseason lifts,
12:59and some of my hitting there and stuff like that,
13:02and always just kind of just having that area to go back to
13:05and just like the relationships that I've made, you know, there.
13:10And I saw my head coach at the game here yesterday.
13:14I got to talk to him a little bit and still keep close contact with him.
13:17And, yeah, I think just the other relationships that I've made there,
13:20you know, it's just I love it.
13:22It must have been fun, like, playing there,
13:24being from Chula Vista about 15 minutes away.
13:26Did you get a lot of people, like,
13:28from your childhood coming out to watch your games?
13:30Yeah, this series, every time it comes to San Diego,
13:35I play for free.
13:36I was going to ask you,
13:38how much did you spend in tickets last night, Casey?
13:41I don't even know.
13:42I think I had, like, 14 of the ones that I had to pay for,
13:46and then everyone else just got their own.
13:50I mean, that is so great.
13:51The pride of Chula Vista Eastlake High School.
13:53My first college girlfriend was from Chula Vista,
13:56but that's neither here nor there.
13:58Question number two, Casey,
14:00what's your favorite use of technology?
14:03Is it video games?
14:04Is it social media?
14:05Is it watching stuff on your phone?
14:11Gosh, I got to go to video games, man.
14:14I love playing video games.
14:16It's cool for me just because.
14:19Oh.
14:21Boom.
14:22That's not the noise we're looking for.
14:24No.
14:25Damn it.
14:25We're not done with Casey.
14:27No, he'll be back.
14:28That was a.
14:29He's calling back.
14:29Yeah, he's calling back.
14:30I think that was a cheek hang up.
14:32You ever be on the phone?
14:33Yes.
14:34Like, and you press it against your ear,
14:36and it just boom.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Well, we'll ask him.
14:38And it just goes away.
14:39Yeah.
14:39Did you just have a cheek hang up?
14:40What just happened there, Casey?
14:42Yeah.
14:42I don't even.
14:43I couldn't even tell you what just happened.
14:44Okay.
14:45But you were talking about video games.
14:47Which ones you like?
14:49You know, where you play them?
14:51Yeah.
14:51So, like I said before, before my phone decided to end the call.
14:57Favorite use of technology is not this phone.
14:59Oh, man.
14:59I love my training.
14:59Hang it on to you.
15:00Here we go.
15:01Here we go.
15:01So, obviously, I'm not going to pick my phone after that.
15:06I'll go.
15:07Yeah.
15:07Video games.
15:08I get to connect with, you know, friends that I played with and, you know,
15:11everyone that lives in different states and everything.
15:15We all get to, you know, hop on the games and play and, you know,
15:17talk to each other and just be able just to keep in close communication
15:21with each other.
15:21I think that's always, you know, such a good thing for me.
15:24And a key thing for me is just keeping my, you know,
15:26keeping my friend circle.
15:27And, you know, we're all very, very close, very tight.
15:31And, yeah, we all just get to go out and play video games together.
15:36Last one, Casey.
15:37And you're not allowed to say they're both really great.
15:40I'm going to take that answer from you.
15:42So, better Mexican food, San Diego or San Francisco?
15:51All right.
15:54Did we lose you again?
15:56You can't put me on the spot right here like this.
15:59I don't think it's – it's not that offensive, is it?
16:03Like, a non-answer means that the answer is San Diego,
16:07and you don't want to say it up here.
16:09I get enough heat, guys.
16:11Are you kidding me?
16:12You're going to put me on the spot like this.
16:13Okay, so the answer is San Diego.
16:16Do you like the – do you like the fries and the burrito?
16:19Do you do the California burrito?
16:21Yeah, I mean, that's – oh, God.
16:23That's my thing, man.
16:24I love San Diego.
16:26I love San Diego's Mexican food.
16:30Gosh, I'm getting – you guys are doing this to me.
16:32But, yeah.
16:32Did you get one –
16:33San Diego Mexican food for me is – it's always – yeah.
16:36Yeah, it's always just different for me.
16:38I feel like I'm just spoiled here.
16:40Casey, did you get one today?
16:42Did you go get a French fry burrito before the game?
16:46I did not get one today, but I did get one last night.
16:49After the game or before?
16:52After.
16:52I got one after.
16:53Celebrate.
16:54You got two hits.
16:55Yeah.
16:56Yeah.
16:56You deserve it.
16:56I got one after the game, and then I got one on the off day, too.
17:03That's so good.
17:05I'm trying to eat them so I get, you know, sick of it, but I just – I mean, I'm
17:09never
17:09going to get sick of it.
17:10No, never.
17:10No.
17:11My question was much more benign.
17:13I got overruled.
17:13My question was burrito, enchilada, or rolled tacos, which one do you prefer of the three?
17:21100% burrito.
17:22Burrito, yeah.
17:23Yeah, I'm a big California burrito guy.
17:26And my spot that they have in Chilvestre, there used to be one next to the stadium.
17:34There was a Lolita's right across, and that's my spot.
17:38And there's one where I grew up and everything, and I was really excited.
17:43I think last year they closed the one by the stadium, so I was a little butthurt.
17:47Yeah, that's where my girlfriend and I broke up, actually, was at Lolita's.
17:51At Lolita's?
17:51Yeah, so thanks, Casey.
17:53Well, shit, then you get to get a little California burrito, and then it's all good.
17:56Yeah, it would have been extra sour cream for the soul, right?
17:59I got no girl, but I got a burrito.
18:01That's right.
18:02Yeah.
18:02You got a Cali B.
18:03Oh, girl, you're set to go.
18:05But my belly's full.
18:07Yeah, that's so good.
18:08Where were you 35 years ago?
18:10We'll let you go, dude.
18:12Thank you for calling back.
18:13Go get a couple more hits tonight, all right?
18:15All right, thanks, guys.
18:16All right, appreciate it.
18:17Casey Schmidt.
