00:00Maybe wait on that one there, Mark.
00:02Hear what Joe has to say before he decides that he's the winner.
00:04Shut up.
00:05It is the morning roast.
00:06Sam Lundman filling in for Joe Spadoni.
00:08He is out on baby leave right now.
00:10We'll talk a little bit of Niners draft.
00:11We'll talk some Giants baseball later on.
00:14I don't know if 49er fans are feeling a whole lot better about their draft after another day.
00:20I mean, I don't think that's really how it works.
00:22I don't think another day is going to completely change how you're feeling about this one.
00:26This is a 49ers draft that I think overall left a lot to be desired.
00:30Sure, maybe there's pieces to be found in it, but off the rip here, not inspiring a whole lot.
00:36But 49ers fans, again, a lot of anger there.
00:39You're hearing a lot of people kind of chiding 49ers fans for being angry here.
00:42But Joe Shasky, you've got a pretty passionate defense that you want to make for 49er fans
00:47and the emotions that they're feeling right now.
00:49And you kind of gave me a snippet of it earlier on,
00:52and I think a lot of people are going to like what you have to say here.
00:54Well, no, you don't have to like what I have to say.
00:57You're entitled to fan however you want.
00:59But this thing that there's like the fan police out there,
01:02oh, there are 11 teams that would die to be the Niners.
01:06Great.
01:07I don't care about the Cardinals.
01:08I don't care about the Tampa Bay Bucs.
01:10I don't care about the Panthers.
01:12I don't care about the Jets or the New York Giants or any of those teams.
01:16I'm a Niner fan.
01:17I'm born and raised here.
01:18All right?
01:18This is the team I grew up with.
01:20And they make me go crazy.
01:22All right?
01:23In a weird way.
01:25It was easier being a Warrior fan when they sucked because at least I knew they were god-awful.
01:32And I would live for the small things.
01:34You know, like, oh, my God, Jason Richardson's looking good.
01:36And, you know, maybe Gilbert Arenas will stay with us.
01:40And, you know, Antoine Jameson, 50 points, back-to-back.
01:43Like, it was the little things.
01:44I knew where we stood in the pecking order of the NBA hierarchy and the sports landscape.
01:50At the very bottom.
01:51That's where we were.
01:52We resided at the bottom.
01:54No expectations.
01:55And, like, I think the most insane torture chamber to be stuck in as a fan is exactly where the
02:02Niners are.
02:04Knocking at the door and no one answers.
02:09Knocking at the door and never actually getting your championship.
02:14Knocking at the door and not being able, as I download this video, to not be able to actually win
02:20a Lombardi Super Bowl.
02:21It's the worst vortex Bermuda Triangle to be in as a fan.
02:26The so close yet so far away feeling.
02:29It's awful.
02:30Absolutely awful.
02:31I concur.
02:32And I am so sick and tired of hosts and media people and fans policing people for just being insane.
02:41This is why this team travels so well.
02:44Because we love it so much.
02:46This is why this team sells out every merchandise.
02:48You couldn't find those new black jerseys, which I'm, like, whatever on.
02:52Like, you couldn't find them anywhere because people were gobbling them up left and right like Tic Tacs.
02:57You know why?
02:57Because this fan base is rabid.
03:00This fan base is dying.
03:02It's salivating for one title.
03:04So shame on us for losing our minds because we want the draft to actually net us some players to
03:10get us over the hump.
03:11I'm so sick and tired of everyone telling Niner fans how to feel.
03:16I'm sick of it.
03:17I don't want to hear from people in the media.
03:18I don't want to hear from the people.
03:20I had Jake Lazor.
03:20You're spoiled.
03:21Shut up, Jake Lazor.
03:23Shut up.
03:25Spoiled.
03:26You don't know the misery that I've been through.
03:27Have there been some amazing moments?
03:29Like, the Philadelphia playoff one was amazing.
03:32Amazing.
03:33The final candlestick playoff game with Kaepernick running for almost 200 and throwing for 250.
03:39Amazing.
03:40Amazing.
03:41But the reality is, is that when you keep falling at the very end and you're the bridesmaid and never
03:49the bride,
03:50and you never get, like, the ring put on the finger, that is a misery vortex that drives you insane.
03:56It drives you to lose your mind over every draft pick, over every free agent signing, over every player that
04:03loses their mind on Instagram,
04:05and is speeding 120 miles past the stadium.
04:08Yes, shame on Niner fans for caring so much, for supporting this team so much, that we want you to
04:16draft well.
04:17I am so sick of hearing from media people and fans and hosts and other people telling me how I
04:27should root for the team that keeps letting me down at the end,
04:30even though I love it.
04:31Even though I love them probably as much as I love my family, which is probably not healthy for my
04:36own actual, like, literal health and my emotions.
04:39But, like, I love this team.
04:41I grew up loving this team.
04:42My dad grew up loving this team.
04:44My brother loves this team.
04:45My grandfather loves this team.
04:46My son is learning how to love this team as we speak right now.
04:50And part of loving this team is them driving me completely nuts.
04:55That's how it works.
04:58It's how it works.
04:59If you aren't driven nuts by their draft, are you a real fan?
05:03I ask you.
05:05Doesn't their track record speak to what?
05:08That I'm going to have my heart broken in the NFC Championship game again?
05:11That my coach isn't going to remember the overtime rules?
05:14That Nick Bosa is not going to be ready for a four-day two-play?
05:17Where should I have been a tackle?
05:21George Kittle is telling a joke and not picking up a fumble?
05:25Where Brent and I are wide open and we can't block someone named Chris Jones who's going to the whole
05:30thing?
05:31Yeah, shame on me for being angry.
05:34Blow it up.
05:35I'm so sick.
05:37And look, I love Mark Willard.
05:38Mark is entitled to fan how he wants.
05:40We fan differently.
05:41That's the beauty of it.
05:43Stop telling me how to feel!
05:46You took another receiver!
05:48Again!
05:49After my other receiver is crazy!
05:52He's on Instagram going crazy!
05:54And my other receiver is doing TikToks in Japan!
05:57He's posted more TikToks in Japan than touchdown catches this year!
06:02That's a stat.
06:04I want to win a Super Bowl!
06:07I want them to be comprehensive in the draft and fill their needs and have a left guard that's actually
06:13competent!
06:15Shame on me!
06:17Alright, I'm done.
06:18No, honestly, Joe, I love the emotion you showed there.
06:22I think you bring up a great point.
06:23There's been a lot of great moments that have been along the way.
06:25You know, like the IUX ladybug catch and that comeback against the line.
06:28How fun was that?
06:29I remember, you know, huffing and puffing up the rant there at Levi's Stadium to go watch those final seconds
06:34take off with you and your brother
06:36at Levi's Stadium in your seats.
06:38It was one of the greatest moments that I've been able to experience watching football.
06:41Watching the Niners clinch that Super Bowl berth.
06:43And that's always going to be a great moment that you, me, and Pac got to share together.
06:46It was amazing.
06:47It gets rained on a little bit, though, because of what happened two weeks later.
06:51That NRC title game against the Packers.
06:52I remember watching in 2019 going to that first Super Bowl appearance.
06:57I remember watching that game.
06:58That was a three and a half hour long party.
07:00I don't even know why the Packers even showed up.
07:02They didn't need to show up.
07:03It was a complete party watching that entire game.
07:06It was a lot of fun.
07:07Unfortunately, it gets rained on for what happened two weeks later.
07:09When you have all these great runs here, they are fun.
07:12They are enjoyable.
07:13Dude, the memories are amazing.
07:14But there's a level of just like, ah, damn.
07:18You didn't get, like, the Sleepy Floyd game was for years for the Warriors.
07:21That was the great big moment for the Warriors.
07:23But no one forgets, that was their only win in that series there.
07:27They got gentlemen sweeped, I think, by the Lakers in that one.
07:30These great moments when they get buried by all this misery,
07:33there is a level of just like, it takes a little bit of the shine off.
07:38They're still fun, but it's always like, well, yeah, but what happened next?
07:40And that is what drives fans crazy.
07:44And I think, and this is something I've learned from being a part of the media as well
07:47and being around a lot of media members who, more so in baseball,
07:51because I go to a lot of these baseball games.
07:52And there was a writer I talked to last year with MLB.com.
07:55He covers the Rockies and the Diamondbacks.
07:57I'm spacing on who his name is.
07:59But he told me he grew up a Diamondbacks fan.
08:00Then he became what's called baseball agnostic,
08:03which is, I think Steven Rizzotto can kind of attest to this.
08:05When you get into the journalistic feel of it, you kind of, you lose your fandom.
08:09You do.
08:10And this is why I would never want to be a beat reporter,
08:12because I talk to a lot of them.
08:15Like, they're all baseball fans.
08:16They love baseball growing up, but they can't love it like they did growing up
08:20because there's a professional wall that they can't really break through
08:23because they're professional beat writers.
08:25They have to have this unbiased view of things.
08:28And I think when you were in that for so long,
08:30and I'm not trying to come at the media for this,
08:32but I'm just trying to paint the picture, I think, why things fall the way they fall.
08:35I do think there's a level when you're so neutral for so long,
08:39you kind of lose sight of that crazed passion that we saw from you just a few minutes ago.
08:44And that's where I think you see these media members kind of talking down.
08:47And I was like, well, you should feel, you know, proud that the 49ers
08:50may be able to do what you want.
08:51Yeah, it's amazing.
08:52They're amazing.
08:53The Cleveland Browns would love to have what you have.
08:55And it's just like, to your point, Joe, like, I don't care about that, though.
08:58There's only one team that I care about, and that is the 49ers.
09:01There's only one team that I want to see finish the job, and that is the 49ers.
09:05When you keep coming up short, like, it's agonizing as a fan.
09:09When you're seeing other fan bases that you don't think deserve that success,
09:13like the fact that Philly blew past the Chiefs and won the Super Bowl the year after,
09:17the 49ers faceplanted in overtime.
09:20God, that stung.
09:21And I still think of that video of you and Bonte walking into the Lincoln Financial Field
09:26a couple years ago before that NFC title game,
09:28and the fact that those brang morons got to enjoy the Super Bowl
09:31that we should have been able to enjoy the year before, that really sucks.
09:36That really eats at you.
09:37And when you're a neutral media member, you lose the feel of that.
09:41And that's where it's like, you know what?
09:42I don't want to hear media members saying, you've had it good, you've had it this,
09:46you've had it that, because at the end of the day, it's like,
09:48you're not attached to the emotions that we're feeling here.
09:50And so, like, please, yeah, don't look down on me and say that this crap is actually caviar,
09:56because that's not what's going on here.
09:57I know how I feel as a fan watching my team.
10:01Don't sit here and tell me that, oh, you got to the NFC title game.
10:03You should feel happy about that.
10:04We don't, as Jed said, we don't raise banners for those kind of seasons.
10:08We don't raise banners for happy memories.
10:09That's true, Sam.
10:10That's the thing.
10:10I think loss in the sauce, yes, are we miserable and angry?
10:15That's part of fandom.
10:16No, but that doesn't mean we're not appreciative.
10:18Oh, yeah.
10:19See, that's the part that, like, really bugs me.
10:21Just because I have criticisms doesn't mean you do other things great.
10:25Like, how can we not understand this?
10:27Like, again, you think I would support this team as much as I do if I didn't love them?
10:32Mm-hmm.
10:32Well, you go crazy because you care.
10:34I would say it's like you mentioned the old Warrior days because we knew what we were.
10:39There was, I would say, kind of an apathy to it because you knew how it was going to end.
10:43You don't want to be in that situation, though.
10:45When Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly were running this team, you all, I'm talking about fans,
10:50stopped showing up.
10:51Mm-hmm.
10:52I was watching.
10:53I was there.
10:54I was texting with my homies.
10:56I watched every game back.
10:57I watched those horrible Blaine Gabbert games.
11:00And, you know, bless someone like Larry Kruger who's out there talking about the Niners,
11:03I remember him making statements like he thinks Blaine might be a franchise quarterback.
11:07And if you had said that today, people would go nuts and it would make the rounds.
11:10But, like, he watches everything.
11:12He's like me, right?
11:13Would die hard like you, like Carter, like everyone, die hard in the mix.
11:18How you feel is how you feel.
11:19And when you love something as much as you do, you will criticize it when you feel it's appropriate.
11:25That doesn't mean you don't love them.
11:26How many of you have children, right?
11:28If you have children out there, you're critiquing your kids all the time.
11:31It doesn't mean you don't love them.
11:32Right?
11:32You know what the worst parent is?
11:34Little Johnny should play shortstop and bat leadoff.
11:37He's flawless.
11:39It's like, little Johnny can't catch a cold.
11:42Little Johnny can play short.
11:43What are you talking about?
11:44He's barely a fringe right fielder.
11:46Like, that's the problem.
11:48Some of you guys are allowed to fan.
11:50You go over there.
11:51Don't worry about what we're doing over here, screaming and yelling and losing our minds.
11:55Because you know what we're doing?
11:56We're the ones trying to push them to being just a little bit better.
12:00So we can finally win the championship.
12:02That's it.
12:03We just want to win a championship.
12:05And as I, like, look at the whole, you know, picture that I'm trying to paint here, it's
12:09like, and then I look over at the Warriors.
12:10It's like, as frustrated as I might be, how angry can I really get?
12:15They won four titles.
12:16You know what I mean?
12:16Like, how angry can I really get?
12:18They won four.
12:20Like, I'm a little angry, but like, ugh.
12:22There's a cushion there because you won those four titles.
12:24How angry can I be?
12:25The 49ers, though, I do think you have a right to be a little bit angry because you've been
12:29so close so many times.
12:32Like, how many times?
12:33Every Super Bowl loss is seven NFC Championship games.
12:35I mean.
12:35You name a team in a 17-year period that's had that much heartbreak.
12:39You gotta go.
12:40In any sport.
12:40I think Buffalo's the only out-winning one.
12:42I think Buffalo has a good claim to be in that category with their four in a row.
12:46It's a short list, Joe.
12:48It's a short list of how much misery the 49ers.
12:51Like, I would argue that the misery of getting close and then falling short is worse than
12:57the misery of just being irrelevant for so long because when you have those peaks and
13:02falls, it hurts, I think, even more than when it's just a steady stream of just mediocrity.
13:09As a Warrior fan during the dark days, people would say, why are you a Warrior fan?
13:13And you'd say, like, I know.
13:14I don't know.
13:15We suck.
13:16I know.
13:16And that's what you would say.
13:17That's what you would say, right?
13:18That's what you would say.
13:19I know.
13:19I know.
13:19We suck.
13:20I know.
13:20We know.
13:21We know.
13:22We're not very good.
13:23As a Niner fan, it's like, you guys can't win the big one.
13:26Yeah, I know!
13:27No, duh!
13:28I want to swear right now.
13:29It's like, I know what's driving me.
13:31That's!
13:32That's Joe Shasky.
13:33I'm Sam Luman.
13:34Again, we're reacting to the 49ers draft, whether it was good or not.
13:37But what, in your opinion, actually makes for a good draft, though?
13:41Again, draft grades or whatever, when you're evaluating a draft, Niner fans, what makes
13:46you decide whether it was good or not?
