Mid-Air Chaos to Tarmac Drama: Passenger Arrested After Smoking, Misbehaviour and False Claims in Bengaluru

A viral video showing a passenger smoking on an airport tarmac and behaving aggressively with staff has triggered outrage, with the accused later arrested in Bengaluru for multiple offences.

The individual, identified as Utkarsh Gautam, is seen in the footage openly smoking despite repeated warnings from ground staff that smoking is strictly prohibited. He allegedly ignored instructions, argued with officials, and demanded proof of no-smoking rules, repeatedly asking, “Show me where’s the no-smoking rule?”

The situation escalated when he reportedly blew cigarette smoke toward a staff member and challenged personnel in an aggressive manner, creating an unsafe environment at the airport.

The incident is linked to a broader case involving Gautam’s conduct on an IndiGo flight from Jaipur to Bengaluru on March 22. According to airline staff, he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attempted to open the aircraft’s emergency exit mid-air, and verbally abused the cabin crew.

Following a complaint by airline authorities, police at Kempegowda International Airport initially registered a Non-Cognisable Report (NCR) and released him after inquiry.

However, the matter took a serious turn when Gautam later posted allegedly false and derogatory claims on social media, accusing the police of harassment.

Taking suo motu cognisance, airport police registered a fresh case and subsequently arrested him for spreading misleading information and defaming law enforcement, in addition to the earlier allegations.

Officials stated that strict action has been initiated considering both the in-flight misconduct and the attempt to mislead the public.
