A businessman was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Kalyan after a speeding car allegedly driven by a 17 year old boy struck him while he was cycling on an incomplete stretch of the Ring Road on Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as Srinivas Tandle (42), was flung into the air on impact. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital by locals but was declared dead on arrival.

According to police, the minor fled the scene immediately after the accident and went into hiding. He was apprehended the following evening. An FIR has been registered under sections related to rash and negligent driving, along with non-bailable charges.

Senior Police Inspector Amarnath Waghmode said the boy’s mother, in whose name the car is registered, has also been named as an accused. The minor reportedly told police that he had informed his mother before taking the vehicle. His father is a lawyer.

Police sources added that the boy had briefly posted on social media after the incident, referring to it as a “small accident” and expressing fear of being scolded by his father. The post was later deleted.

CCTV footage shows that the car, allegedly being driven at high speed, swerved and rammed into Tandle around 8 pm before speeding away. Police later traced the vehicle to a parking lot in the residential building of the accused. The car had minor damage.

Family members said Tandle, who owned multiple garment stores in Kalyan, had recently taken up cycling for fitness and had borrowed a bicycle from a friend just days before the incident.

Locals said the incomplete stretch of the Ring Road is frequently used by walkers and cyclists due to partial closure caused by stalled construction work. Residents alleged that speeding and stunt driving are common on the road, leading to repeated accidents.

Residents and family members have demanded strict action against the accused and urged authorities, and improve safety measures such as speed breakers, CCTV cameras, and barricades.

Police said further investigation is underway.
