00:00We welcome in Kalen DeBoer, head coach, the University of Alabama, Crimson Tide.
00:05Coach, good morning to you.
00:06Hey, good morning.
00:08All right, we've been looking for a quarterback since 1993.
00:11You were playing college baseball and football at that time.
00:14How is Ty Simpson going to stop that search for the Cleveland Browns
00:18if they take him at 6 or 24 or anywhere in the first round?
00:22Well, Ty, even though he hasn't played a lot of starts,
00:27I think that's the one thing people look at.
00:29He's been around college football at a high level, and he's not just in college,
00:35but he's the son of a coach, a college coach.
00:41Man, he's just done a great job.
00:43Last year he really did an excellent job of taking big steps forward, big chunks,
00:51from going from playing a little bit his previous years to Olsen on the football field.
00:58And, you know, starting the fast, starting the season fast, and making a lot of big plays for us.
01:03And he understands the game.
01:06He understands not just the X's and O's, but, you know, what the quarterback's job is.
01:12And it's more than just taking care of the football.
01:15It's when to make those plays.
01:17And, you know, we put a lot on his shoulders to check things.
01:21So he gets it all.
01:22He did a great job of managing the game, but he also did a great job of making big plays
01:27and big moments for us.
01:29It's not a requirement.
01:30I just want your opinion on it.
01:31If the Browns or any QB needy team were to take him in the first round,
01:36would you start him week one if you were that football team?
01:39I don't know.
01:40That's not for me to decide.
01:41You know, that's for him.
01:43And that learning curve, that comes along with any move, whether it's high school or college.
01:49And, obviously, there's a big step from college to the NFL.
01:52You know, I certainly respect that.
01:53And I know Ty does too.
01:55But I can tell you this.
01:56I can tell you he would put his head down and go compete for a job from the get-go.
02:02And so that part I can tell you.
02:06And he'll do it the right way.
02:08He'll, you know, respect everyone around him.
02:10But he will attack the situation and he will be in the facility and spending countless hours doing whatever he
02:20can from learning to, you know,
02:22working with his guys around him to be on the same page because he understands it's more than just him.
02:27It's the guys that he throws to.
02:29It's the guys he's got blocking for him.
02:31He will put everything into it to give himself a chance to be in that moment if that opportunity comes
02:37up.
02:37You know, Coach, yesterday there was a media firestorm that was lit because, yeah, Dan Orlovsky arguing with Pat McAfee
02:46and others about, you know,
02:47your quarterback that you spent so much time with, you know, in Tuscaloosa.
02:52So I guess I would ask, how would he handle or how does he handle, you know, that kind of
02:57not only negativity,
02:58but there's also plenty of positivity surrounding him.
03:02And what do you think has been unfair about what has been said about him?
03:08I don't know about what's unfair.
03:10I probably haven't heard enough or watched enough to know those things.
03:17You know, I think the thing with Ty is that when it comes to, I guess we refer to it
03:22as the noise, right,
03:23the noise that surrounds, you know, him and comparisons and things like that.
03:28I think in a program like we're here at Alabama, there's noise constantly,
03:33and you have to, you know, really not train yourself,
03:37but you have to be really good at just being able to focus on what you can control.
03:41And that's what we talk about daily.
03:43And I know most programs do have to do that, but we live it every single day.
03:48And especially when you're the quarterback and Ty, you know, had to live that,
03:53whether it was this year or, you know,
03:56seeing what other guys went through the years before.
03:59He really understands that, you know, the noise and everything,
04:02the outside factors don't mean anything.
04:04It's about what you put into it.
04:06It's about, you know, how you can handle and focus on what you can control.
04:11And that's what I think he's done.
04:12And I think that's what he'll continue to do.
04:15Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer joining us here on the Make It Right call Kyle Wright Hotline.
04:18The injuries that happened during the year, were those more of a freak injury sort of thing,
04:22or is he a guy that he's still young?
04:24Does he have to put on a little bit more bulk?
04:29You know, I think that, you know,
04:32he's certainly got the ability to put on that weight, the bulk.
04:38You know, he's a very mobile guy.
04:40I mean, I felt like, you know, he got himself out of trouble at times and did a great job.
04:45He can move the chains.
04:45I think that's another thing that makes him special, makes him really good.
04:49It isn't just the ability to throw, the ability to read things and, you know, make plays,
04:56but he can also do it with his feet.
04:58And so I guess I don't really feel like it's an issue as far as, you know, you play the
05:05quarterback spot
05:06and you're going to get hit and he was out there every single week ready to go doing his thing.
05:12And, you know, I think there's times when, you know, everyone around him could have been more helpful,
05:17you know, too.
05:18And so it's a little bit of both.
05:20People get some film on you.
05:21They know how they want to attack you, whether it's you as a quarterback or you as an offense.
05:26And you've got to make the next adjustment.
05:28You've got to continue to evolve.
05:30And I think that's what he did a good job of throughout the year.
05:33And, you know, going through the grind that he did this season, whether it's taking hits
05:39or, you know, just trying to keep your body right, I mean, that's a great learning experience
05:43for what he'll need to be able to do when he gets to the next level.
05:45Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer joining us right now on the hotline.
05:49So we parachute in on these things as an NFL fan base.
05:53I watch a lot of college football as well.
05:55But we're going to pick apart, you know, some of the biggest games for all the players,
06:00not just quarterbacks.
06:01But you know how the position is, the way we break it down.
06:04So is it unfair of us to look at the Indiana game and make any big-time conclusions?
06:12Well, I mean, I think everything is, you know, we always tell our guys what you put on film
06:18is, you know, who you are and stuff.
06:20And so, but again, I think that there's, you know, there's a team, you know, that's around
06:26you that can help you out too.
06:28And, you know, we needed to help Ty out with a better run game at times.
06:33I think that would have made life a little easier for him.
06:35And, you know, again, I thought Ty did some good things, you know, even in that game.
06:43You know, unfortunately, he didn't, wasn't able to play in the second half.
06:46That's really the only time he missed all year.
06:49And, you know, when you're referring to kind of the previous question you asked about,
06:52you know, the bumps and bruises are getting dinged up.
06:55But he's a tough kid, and he wanted to be out there and gave everything he had.
07:00I think that's what I take from that game is that, you know, he didn't want to come off
07:05the field, and there just came a point where, you know, he understood as a team player, like,
07:09you got to do what's best for the team and, you know, belief in the other guys around him
07:14in the next quarter back up.
07:16So, I mean, I think there's, yeah, there's certainly always things you would like to have
07:21back in a game.
07:23And I'm sure Ty has one or two of those there in that game.
07:26But I think you got to look at the whole picture, too.
07:29And Ty, all season long, made a ton of throws.
07:31He can hit all areas of the field.
07:33I think he throws not just the outside of the field really well, but the thing that
07:37separates him is his ability to throw, you know, routes short and long, you know, over
07:42the middle, the crossing routes and the deep digs and things like that.
07:46That's something that you don't see from a lot of quarterbacks.
07:49You got a lot of plays under center in a pro style kind of offense for us this year.
07:55And that will translate over very quickly, unlike many of the quarterbacks that you probably
08:00see in the draft.
08:01So there's a lot of things that I think, you know, we can pick apart the negatives, but
08:05there are so many positives that Ty brings to the table that, you know, will be beneficial
08:10for him, you know, here very soon.
08:12Kalen DeBura joining us here on the show.
08:15Let me ask you about Caden Proctor here.
08:17Les Lima, you got another question about Ty.
08:19Let me ask you about Caden Proctor.
08:20One, does he really squat, uh, 815?
08:25Yeah.
08:26I mean, I think there's different, uh, ways we measure that and there's just the real
08:31squat and, uh, wouldn't surprise me.
08:33I can't remember exactly what his numbers were right off hand, but yeah, he's, he's a
08:36beast.
08:37I mean, that's insane.
08:38He can, he can, uh, he's an impressive athlete.
08:41He's massive, uh, but his ability to move, uh, and then the strength he has, as you know,
08:47you're referring to with the strength that in the squat rack, uh, it's, it's so impressive.
08:53And then on top of that, just like Ty, I mean, the personality, uh, that comes along
08:58with it, the care factor, uh, the, the human, you know, just everything that these guys stand
09:03for and KP, uh, in particular, now that we're talking about him, a man, he is just so much
09:08fun to be around and, uh, really, you know, I mean, he made another level of commitment
09:14every single year and this year, you know, uh, it was really impressive seeing his focus
09:19and how he was locked in from beginning to end.
09:22Coach, we've had some great offensive linemen play for the Browns.
09:24And I think the general fan, I don't like doing this, but they tend to hold it against
09:27a player.
09:28If he came from a school, if they're not known for a certain position, I think to a lot
09:32of general Browns fans, they look at Alabama's not really having great offensive linemen
09:36since John Hanna.
09:38Fair or not, I think that's the way a lot of people may feel about it.
09:41How will Caden Proctor buck that trend and be one of the next great offensive linemen for
09:46the Cleveland Browns if he is selected by them?
09:50Well, I think, you know, he's got sheer ability, uh, and just the size.
09:55I mean, if you've never seen the guy in person, you really don't, you can't like, they can't
10:00fathom what he, what he looks like.
10:03Uh, and, you know, people thought he was too big and this and that.
10:08I mean, he, uh, he did lean up some throughout the year, but he's just a big human being.
10:14But I think the ability to move and I think he's gotten better, uh, and could he really
10:18worked at it, uh, the last couple of years with his, his technique.
10:22Um, he's got a mean streak to him.
10:25Uh, he, he, you know, he is what you want in an offensive lineman and, um, you know,
10:31he just, uh, team guy because you got to have that as well as a unit that plans to play
10:35together.
10:36And so, you know, he's unselfish that way.
10:38Uh, he, I mean, I think he's just got a nastiness.
10:41He's got a, he's got a way about him.
10:43And, and is he, is he played his best football?
10:46No, he'll play his best football here in the years to come.
10:49Um, I really believe that, but he's definitely trending, uh, in this last year, I felt like
10:54he just trended up in the right way, uh, in so many areas that are just going to, you
10:59know, he's a special player, special human being.
11:01It's the season of pro days now, coach.
11:03Uh, so you're going to be inundated and have been in the past with coaches, GM scouts, personnel,
11:10I don't know, maybe even some NFL owners.
11:13Uh, what is that process like?
11:14Cause obviously you want to sell your players, but you also are expected to have some of
11:19some degree of honesty as well.
11:20How does that work?
11:21What is your strategy?
11:23Yeah, that's exactly right.
11:24And we have our pro day today here.
11:26Uh, guys are going to be coming in, uh, uh, here in the facility just a little bit.
11:30Some of them tripled in over the last two days.
11:32So it was good to see him again.
11:33They go off and some of them train here, but some of them go to, you know, their trainer,
11:37uh, in other States.
11:39And, um, you know, you're exactly right.
11:41I think to develop that trust, uh, and, and we work with the scouts, they come here, um,
11:47the general managers, you know, they, they got to have a level of trust of what you're
11:52telling them, uh, is real.
11:54Uh, and I think when you do that, it helps you not just in the moment, but it helps you
11:58in the years to come that when you do say something or really stick your neck out for
12:02a guy, uh, you know, it's like, okay, you know, he, he, he, he didn't sell us a bill
12:08of goods, you know, uh, three years ago when we were talking about this player, um, it's
12:13real, you know, and, you know, that's what I think it is.
12:16It's, it's a trust.
12:17These guys are experts.
12:19These guys are really good that come here to our facility and evaluate our guys.
12:24And they have so much information and data, um, you know, they can see through it too.
12:29So it's, it's like, you'd never want to go down that road.
12:31So it's an easy sell for our guys.
12:34Uh, we have great human beings.
12:35Uh, this was a fun team to coach because they had a lot of grit and determination, um,
12:41fought through some adversity and, uh, did it together.
12:44Uh, but obviously there's got to be an element of the physicality and the beatability.
12:49Uh, and that's what these guys get to showcase today at pro day.
12:51Well, I only asked that question because long time ago on this show, we had a major D1 head
12:56coach compare his quarterback to Michael Jordan and that, uh, his quarterback and that quarterback
13:02didn't actually end up taking a snap in the NFL.
13:04So, uh, that's why I wondered if you ever just flat out lie on behalf of your players.
13:09No, I mean, even, even some of, I feel sometimes, you know, I'm a little too conservative on,
13:14on, uh, on things, but, uh, you know, uh, I can't say enough about Ty and the things that
13:21we just talked about.
13:23Um, you know, you're, again, you're trying to pick apart the things that he needs to get
13:26better at.
13:26Um, there's always going to be those things, but man, uh, if you got Ty Simpson, uh, as
13:32your quarterback or Caden Proctor is your offensive lineman, uh, they are definitely first round
13:37guys in my mind and, um, you know, going to go help some football team and, you know,
13:43they're going to be better.
13:44They're going to be better as a team, uh, not just by the playmaking that they can bring,
13:48but who they are as people and how they'll bring a team together.
13:51It was Dabo Sweeney.
13:52Todd Boyd would have been better than Johnny Tone.
13:54I, come on.
13:55I'm sorry, coach.
13:56Go ahead.
13:56All right, coach, uh, lawmakers, uh, and even the president of the United States have been
14:01talking a lot about the future of college athletics and NIL and whether or not we need
14:07to go backwards, whether we need to go back to another era to straighten things out, make
14:12sure kids are student athletes.
14:14Uh, how do you feel about this?
14:16Because obviously you and your school, your program, you've made this transition with your
14:21collectives and the boosters.
14:23So obviously it's, it's not something you can't handle, but what would you like to see?
14:28And when you talk to other major coaches, is there a consensus on this or do we have a
14:32lot of wildly different opinions?
14:35Well, I, I, there's definitely, um, you know, a way we got to make this work, um, and a space
14:43where NIL is, is strong and a part of this, you know, what, what college football, college
14:49athletics is right now.
14:51And it will be, um, but I think there's just what everyone's always looking for is like,
14:55what are the ground rules?
14:56What are the, what are the things that really, you know, you can kind of hang your hat on
15:01that, keep it an even playing field?
15:04Um, you know, what is it that's being, what is it that is the knowledge that shared?
15:10How are agents operating this like some regulations, you know, that are consistent, I think is what
15:16everyone's looking for.
15:17So I don't think everyone, anyone's really arguing against that NIL shouldn't exist.
15:22Um, I just think the way it kind of, it just kind of boomed.
15:27It went from, from nothing to craziness, um, in a short hurry here.
15:32Um, I think everyone's just kind of looking for a little consistency and a little bit
15:37of, uh, again, regulation, uh, to where we know what to expect and, and just can continue
15:42to evolve.
15:43We know it, it, it's going to be hard to make it perfect, but you know, what can we do
15:48to
15:48continue to make college athletics, uh, what it is, uh, you know, and make it special.
15:53Um, a lot of people are watching, you know, college football right now and we want to keep
15:57it that way.
15:58We want to keep it at the high level and keep it to where it's like one of these, these
16:02things
16:02that's a pastime for everyone to enjoy.
16:05So, um, you know, I'm all about these kids and trying to help them realize their dreams.
16:11Uh, you know, NIL is a part of that, uh, that's, uh, kind of come up here the last few
16:15years that is different, but, uh, it's exciting at the same time.
16:19What's important to a kid in transfer portal or high school?
16:23Is it, is it all just the bottom line money or what's still important?
16:27And maybe that used to be a selling point in recruiting in, in, in years past.
16:31Yeah.
16:31I mean, there's certainly guys and a lot of it is the people that surround these players
16:36of the players themselves.
16:37You can tell the ones that love football and you can tell the ones that believe in themselves
16:42and that this is not just going to be a three or four year stint, uh, playing college football
16:47that they truly believe they have next level talent.
16:49I think it's, uh, the people around them, you know, who are advising them, uh, that,
16:56you know, really sometimes make it complicated and make it, uh, confusing, you know, for them,
17:03uh, on really what they're looking for.
17:04But here at Alabama, we, we know we need to have, uh, we want guys that love the game, uh,
17:10you know, love being a great teammate, uh, have a, have a, uh, level of determination,
17:16uh, that is unmatched and, you know, we just get, our staff does a great job of sorting
17:22through and finding the, uh, not just the best talent, but also the, the high character
17:26people in the last couple of recruiting classes and even the transfer portal, even though it's
17:30kind of a speed dating thing that, that kind of exists.
17:33I think our staff does a great job of seeing through, uh, doing some good background research
17:37to find out, you know, who really loves football, who really will put in the work, um, who are,
17:43who are the guys with high character, uh, the guys that, you know, when adversity does
17:48come, uh, they'll respond the right way.
17:50You got to just do probably a little more due diligence, but, uh, yeah, the NIL piece
17:54is, is certainly a front and center piece.
17:56And we, we aren't going to shy away from that because that is a big part of the decision.
18:01Um, you know, nowadays with, uh, these guys, as they figure out what school they're going
18:05to go to.
18:06You were a football and baseball player.
18:08Where was your favorite place to go in Canton when you played for the crocodiles?
18:12Oh my gosh.
18:14Oh, I loved it there.
18:15That was a long time ago.
18:17So that's funny.
18:18I can't believe you brought that up, but thinking about, uh, talking with you right now, I can
18:22see why, uh, I think that was the, that was, that was a fun time.
18:26That was one year, uh, that, uh, took a lot of great experiences from.
18:29So, uh, you know, I love, love the bat and ball sport, just, uh, like I love football.
18:35So, uh, yeah, that was a good time.
18:36I don't know if Gatsby's was there when you were there, coach.
18:39Yeah.
18:39You would have had a great time.
18:40I know I have coach.
18:42Thank you so much for the time.
18:43All the best.
18:44Awesome.
18:45Roll Tide.
18:47On the make it right.
18:48Call Kyle.
18:48Right.
