00:03Mix together two celebrities.
00:05How can you pack when you don't know where you're going?
00:08I haven't been as excited about something in a long time.
00:11Their destination unknown.
00:13Riga, where's Riga?
00:14Amsterdam.
00:15Throw in another twist.
00:17They must choose an envelope.
00:19Are we ready?
00:20I can't do it.
00:21I have a very bad feeling about this.
00:23One will get a luxury trip.
00:26I'm nervous.
00:26While the other one will travel budget style.
00:31This is high road, low road.
00:35This is amazing.
00:36Amazing.
00:43Not rightly sure what I'm getting myself in for, but we're here anyway.
00:49Daniel O'Donnell is one of Ireland's most successful recording artists
00:53who sold over 10 million records.
00:57We've packed for all eventualities.
00:59I hope.
00:59Bring it on.
01:00Bring it on.
01:01Married to Daniel for 23 years.
01:04Majella O'Donnell is a singer and TV presenter.
01:07Well known for her appearances alongside Daniel on Daniel and Majella's B&B road trip.
01:13Riga.
01:14Where's Riga?
01:14We'd like to go somewhere we've never been.
01:17Yeah.
01:17It's an adventure.
01:18Life's an adventure.
01:19So, bring it on.
01:21Well, where will this adventure take place, Majella?
01:24Here's your destination.
01:28Oh!
01:29Zadar, Croatia.
01:30Oh, that's nice.
01:31Oh, your beauty.
01:33Zadar.
01:34Zadar.
01:34Happy with that.
01:35So, it's the charming and historic Croatian city of Zadar for our celebrities.
01:39But who will be going high and who will be going low?
01:44I'll take B.
01:45I'll take A then.
01:46Are we ready?
01:47We are.
01:48Ah!
01:49Oh, budget.
01:51Lovely.
01:53Do you know what we're doing?
01:54I'm budget.
01:55But I'm well able for that.
01:57Are you?
01:57Yeah.
02:00A two hour, 40 minute flight directly from Dublin lands our celebrities in the Croatian coastal city of Zadar.
02:07Daniel and Majella separate on arrival and make their way towards the walled city.
02:13But where will they be staying?
02:17This is the shade of the street for me.
02:20The shade of the stones.
02:22I'm going to the Forum Hostel.
02:28120 metres.
02:31Boutique Hostel Forum.
02:33Hmm.
02:36So, I'm in ten.
02:40Oh, there we are.
02:42Hmm.
02:45I think there's four beds in here.
02:48As sure as God there's four beds in here.
02:51I just can't imagine being in here with four.
02:54But if you are friendly enough with the four.
02:57The newly built Boutique Hostel Forum is located in the very heart of ancient Zadar.
03:04It offers private and dormitory rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms.
03:09There are several common rooms with cooking facilities and a pool table room.
03:14And breakfast is available on site every morning.
03:18This lovely view.
03:20Let's just see, where would the best view be?
03:23That's nice, right?
03:25No.
03:26Oh, no, I have no view here.
03:27No, I'm going to go down.
03:28What do we see just in case this would be a better view?
03:31I think the other bed's the best.
03:34This will be me here.
03:36Looking out there.
03:39Yeah.
03:40Thank you very much.
03:42Look at that.
03:43What more would you want?
03:44Well, maybe a taste of the high road, Daniel.
03:47Which is exactly what Magella has.
03:50Oh, my gosh.
03:51Oh, wow.
03:53Look at this.
03:55So new.
03:56Everything is new.
03:57Oh, for God's sake.
03:59Your own gym equipment.
04:01My God.
04:02Lee.
04:04Woo-hoo.
04:05The five-star Hyatt Regency offers breathtaking views of the Old Town and the sparkling Adriatic Sea.
04:13Recently renovated throughout, the hotel features a spa and fitness centre, a sauna and indoor swimming pool.
04:20And when you get peckish, there's an array of options from casual poolside bites to fine dining.
04:27Look at the view.
04:31Feel that Daniel is looking at this with me.
04:34But he can see it from his bike down there.
04:36Be correct.
04:43Zadar is situated on the Adriatic Sea in the northwest of Croatia.
04:49It may be less well known than Dubrovnik, but is fast becoming one of the most popular Croatian tourist destinations.
04:56It's a historic walled city, featuring Roman ruins and columns.
05:01Over the next few days, our celebrities will experience the joys of Zadar, but from two very different perspectives.
05:10Well, on the low road, I have four euro.
05:13Well, that means I can go up this bell tower of the St. Anastasia Cathedral here, and I'll get me
05:20steps in. So what more do you want?
05:22And there's four floors.
05:25It'll probably get more difficult.
05:28I'll know if I'm fit after this.
05:34Hello. How are you?
05:36Is it worth it?
05:37It's very worth it.
05:39It's very worth it.
05:39Very nice.
05:39Well, there's a lot of wee stairs here.
05:44Oh, it's a fantastic view.
05:47Wow.
05:49My goodness.
05:50Going from yesterday morning, not even knowing that Zadar existed.
05:55It is absolutely beautiful.
06:00And the angel then on the top of the tower, she turns, depending on the way the wind is blowing.
06:08And there's the hyatt where Magella is. I only know where she is. I haven't seen it. Haven't been invited.
06:17Ah, dang it. That's shocking.
06:20Over on the high road, Magella is boarding a private boat for a spin-out amongst the islands.
06:28There are so many islands here. It's stunning.
06:33In fact, there's over 300 islands in the Zadar archipelago.
06:39I'm very used to being on the water because my father was a really, really keen sailor.
06:45And he used to have a Galway hooker.
06:47He had some hairy, hairy tines on it.
06:51And, of course, living in Donegal now, I have a small little boat myself, a little rib that I go
06:57out on.
06:57And I just, I love the water. Just love it.
07:01Over on the low road, Daniel's on the move as well.
07:05He's making his way up to the Kaminyak viewpoint in Varana Lake Nature Park.
07:11But I don't think all is going well on his e-bike.
07:14I don't know how much help I'm getting here. Doesn't seem like much.
07:19I suppose I'd need to put on my glasses.
07:22I'd say it's not even on.
07:25There we are.
07:27I don't think it was all mother of God.
07:32I'm sucking diesel now.
07:35There's no struggle in that. It wasn't on at all.
07:39I would say that's the Stations of the Cross.
07:42You know, there's another one further back down.
07:45It's a very religious country, this.
07:49Meanwhile, Majella has landed in Doogie Oetok Island
07:53in Nature Park, Tellas Chica.
07:57Oh, wow.
08:01Beautiful.
08:03Normally, if I was on holidays,
08:05I'm not great for going to museums and things.
08:07But when it comes to nature like this,
08:09beaches, sea in the ocean, cliffs,
08:12it's exactly my cup of tea.
08:19I feel like Shirley Valentine now.
08:26I'll take the high road
08:29and you'll take the low road
08:31and I'll be in Zadar before you.
08:36I'm sure.
08:38I'll be cycling a bicycle.
08:44What a view.
08:46My goodness.
08:49Colin Terfod.
08:54Yeah, it's like...
08:56I'm the surveyor of all.
09:01The king of the castle.
09:09Back in Zadar, Daniel is about to get a taste of the high life.
09:13Yes, imagine I'm getting to go on the high road.
09:16I wonder what it'll be like.
09:17It may come out in a rush.
09:18I think I'm going to be cooking.
09:20My favourite pastime.
09:22Not.
09:23But anyway, I'll do anything to get on the high road.
09:29So I'm de-hearing the muscle.
09:31I'm concentrating on my job here.
09:34He's enjoying every single minute of it.
09:37Is he?
09:38Oh, this is great fun.
09:41Daniel, do you like to cook?
09:43No, Sasha.
09:45On the menu today,
09:47Mussels Zadar style.
09:50So now, the blanched tomatoes to take the skin off.
09:53I don't need to blanch because I don't need tomatoes.
09:56I don't really like the tomatoes.
09:58He and you could take this up at home.
10:01Cookery classes.
10:02Would you consider it?
10:03No.
10:04You're not even willing to...
10:06No.
10:07And that's a hard now from Daniel.
10:09I'm going to aromatise now.
10:11The aroma of the high road.
10:17We better hurry up.
10:18My onions are sweating.
10:20We can put tomatoes.
10:22A little bit of breadcrumbs.
10:25And then wine.
10:27Oh, this would be lovely, I must say.
10:30Mine is looking like this.
10:33And mine is looking like this.
10:35Twins.
10:35Okay, okay.
10:36Mine is looking like this.
10:37Yes, a little bit white.
10:38That's because you don't have tomato in yours.
10:41You just put them all on, yes.
10:48Oh, they're opening nicely.
10:49Yeah.
10:53Mmm.
10:54That was gorgeous.
10:56That was a refreshing activity to do with my husband because there's nothing we have in common when it comes
11:03to hobbies.
11:04That was lovely to do that together.
11:06Yes.
11:10After all that excitement, a 12k drive north of Zadar brings Majella to the Falcon Steiner Hotel and Spa Resort
11:18for a little bit of pampering.
11:21Just so relaxing and the feeling of the water, that sort of gush and really warm water on you.
11:31And then have your skin scrubbed through the salt, it all starts to come alive.
11:36It just felt like everything was tingling.
11:40Just wonderful.
11:44This, for me, is a real treat.
11:49I keep saying it, the high road picked me.
12:00Zadar's Waterfront Promenade is a popular spot for tourists to wander about and enjoy music played by the sea.
12:08Yeah, you heard me right.
12:10A sea organ, carved into the steps right here, transforms the rhythms of the waves into music.
12:17That's mad.
12:23The hairs on my arms are standing on end.
12:27It's like these are the speakers, look.
12:29Yeah, yeah.
12:30Literally.
12:32Oh, wow.
12:35Look at the beauty.
12:37Gorgeous.
12:38It's amazing.
12:39Yeah, maybe you could do a duet with the sea, Daniel.
12:41It'd be a big splash.
12:54On High Road, Low Road, the charming walled city of Zadar is the surprise destination for our celebrities, Daniel and
13:01Majella O'Donnell.
13:04Majella struck lucky with the luxury trip.
13:07Beautiful.
13:08Orchids.
13:09While Daniel drew the short straw and is travelling on a budget.
13:13I know if I'm fit after this.
13:17So our Daniel is staying in a hostel and Majella needs to check if he's alright.
13:21I don't know.
13:23What do you think?
13:24Really funky.
13:26Oh, good mattresses.
13:28Yeah.
13:29No shoes.
13:31Are you worried about me?
13:32I was, but I'm not now.
13:34Get out of it.
13:35Bye.
13:36Bye.
13:36Bye.
13:36As easy as it is to walk away and leave me.
13:4115 kilometres north of Zadar sits Nin, a pretty historical jewel located on a small island connected to the mainland
13:49by two stone bridges.
13:51But before Daniel does any exploring, he's craving some refreshment.
13:55Can I have vanilla cone?
13:57I only want vanilla everywhere I go.
14:00I don't need fancy flavours because I was made for the low road.
14:05Gorgeous.
14:08It's a lovely old, old town.
14:12This is Gregory of Nin and if I touch his toe, I'll have good luck.
14:20Just wish for good health for everybody.
14:23In the centre of Nin sits the tiny Church of the Holy Cross.
14:28Deconsecrated now, it was built in the 9th century.
14:31La, la, la, la, la.
14:35Beautiful.
14:36Beautiful in here.
14:37Panis Angelicus.
14:41Fit panis omni.
14:46Not panis gelicus.
14:51Figuris terminus.
14:55Nin is a town that offers visitors a gift of nature.
14:58And that gift is medicinal mud.
15:03What?
15:04There's no way Daniel's trying that.
15:08I bet the high road people are not going to this extreme.
15:13So there I am.
15:15All mudded up.
15:17With the Neen mud.
15:19I mean, it seems like a joke, but it's not a joke.
15:22People come from everywhere to do this.
15:24To put this on for the healing purposes.
15:27So why wouldn't I do it?
15:29I'm not sure how long I need to leave it on.
15:32Oh, you just stand there, Daniel, and I'll go find out.
15:37On the high road, Mijela has arrived at Ope J. Bucic Farm for an olive oil experience.
15:43It involves a tasting session.
15:46This flavour is absolutely beautiful.
15:49Something else.
15:49And a stroll amongst the olive trees, which will eventually lead to a surprise.
15:55The olive is initially green, but then turns into a dark blue or black.
16:03You can see it's changing there.
16:06And could you eat that or is it not?
16:09Now, yes, because it's October, so we are picking them up.
16:12Yeah.
16:12OK.
16:13So what's the surprise?
16:15Well, Mijela has just been told that she can plant and then own her very own olive tree.
16:21Straight in.
16:28So the olive tree is two years old.
16:30I'm hoping that you can come and visit the plant again.
16:34I just planted my own olive tree in Croatia.
16:39Very high road.
16:40One more thing to do.
16:47Yay!
16:49Grow, baby, grow.
16:51And would there be olives on that next year?
16:54You need to come to see it.
16:56It's a deal.
16:58Yay!
16:58Yay!
17:05An hour's drive out of Zadar lies Zermania Canyon and its stunning emerald green river.
17:13Put your bum in first.
17:14Well, I have to wait till I get in before the bum goes on.
17:18No, no, the bum...
17:18Well, how can I reach from you?
17:20You stand and you put your bum in.
17:21That's what I did.
17:24I'm in now.
17:26With all her boating experience gained as a child on the Galway hookers, there was only ever going to be
17:31one captain on this ship.
17:33You just follow me.
17:34Oh, yeah.
17:35When I go to the right, you go to the right.
17:37When I go to the left, you go to the left.
17:40Oh, we're doing this going round in a circle.
17:42Oh!
17:43Under the bushes!
17:45Oh-ho!
17:46Oh-ho!
17:47Oh, what's lying on?
17:48Oh, now we're going to hit that rock.
17:50Wee-hee!
17:53Don't go too fast, Majella.
17:55I'm awful afraid, you see.
17:58Oh, this is shocking.
18:00Woo-hoo-hoo!
18:02Shocking, shocking, shocking.
18:03Yay!
18:05Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
18:09We didn't do too bad.
18:11I thought we were going to fall out.
18:13I enjoyed that very much, but I don't need to do it again.
18:19Oh, dear.
18:20Look at the cows coming down there to get a drink of the nice, clear water.
18:24Hello.
18:25Hello there.
18:26Not afraid to buy it.
18:28All sweet and calm and tranquil now, Daniel.
18:31You have lovely cows and calm, clear water.
18:36Well, I think that's all about to change.
18:46GOOSE
18:54You all right, hon?
18:55Yeah.
18:57Soaking.
18:58It was good fun.
18:59It makes you feel alive.
19:01I was alive before I came there.
19:11I have a low-road thing to do now, and I haven't a clue what it would be.
19:17I hope it's not playing football anymore, whatever else,
19:20because I was useless at football.
19:26I'm not great at this either, but anyway.
19:30All or nothing now.
19:35Obviously nothing.
19:37Well, I'm a golfer, but sometimes I might play twice a week.
19:41You're a golfer, Daniel.
19:44Really?
19:46I mean, really?
19:52Oh, no!
19:55Out of bounds.
19:57I think I'll try that again.
19:59That's better.
20:29If life was a rerun, you would do it differently.
20:31It can be got to via a bridge from the mainland or by a ferry.
20:34The island is historically famous for its pag cheese and for its delicate lace making.
20:41Benedictine nuns have been expertly creating intricate lace patterns here since the 15th century.
20:52Look, we call them doilies.
20:55Our coasters, they look like shit.
20:56We doilies, that's what we call them at home, doilies.
21:00See how they do it here?
21:01That would take forever.
21:03You'd have the patience, my gentleman, maybe I wouldn't.
21:06I...
21:07Ah, you see here.
21:11I'm going to keep this fairly simple.
21:12Beautiful.
21:13Oh, it's fab.
21:14Digital lace making's all well and good, guys.
21:16But what if you were actually given special permission to enter the enclosed monastery of St. Margaret to witness the
21:24lace making for real?
21:26My goodness.
21:27This is like a template.
21:30Yeah, that's...
21:30And then you work all around and all these dots will eventually be filled in.
21:35Yes, indicators.
21:36Yes, it's like a guide.
21:38Thank you so much.
21:41And sister has been doing this for how many years?
21:44Many years.
21:45Many.
21:45Yeah.
21:46We never find out the age, we only know many.
21:49Many is a great answer.
21:51That's right.
21:53Before her trip to Zadar ends, Majella's going to have the opportunity to take home a keepsake that she will
21:59have made all by herself.
22:01She is attending a private workshop where she will craft jewellery with Swarovski crystal.
22:06You're going to choose which bead you would like in your bracelet.
22:12You can choose two colours.
22:13Okay.
22:14I actually really like this.
22:16Aha, okay.
22:17And I think a little bit of green for the Irish.
22:21Okay.
22:27Ah, already I can see the pattern.
22:28You see the pattern, yeah.
22:30Yes.
22:32Now we're on green.
22:34Yes.
22:34It's fairly straightforward, but because it's intricate, it's a little bit awkward, I suppose, yes, trying to pick up the
22:43beads because they're so small.
22:46But it's very therapeutic.
22:50You are going to take the ring.
22:52Okay.
22:55Well, I have to say that was a great experience.
22:59You were good at making this bracelet.
23:02Thank you very much.
23:03I really enjoyed it.
23:09Well, Daniel, what do you think of Zadar?
23:13Well, you know, it's amazing, really, of a place that we knew nothing about.
23:17There's so much to see, so much to do.
23:22It's just fantastic, really.
23:26We travel a lot, and there's a lot of places I have no memory of, but I know I am
23:32going to remember every bit of this.
23:34I think I would come back here without any hesitation.
23:37I think the proximity to Ireland is a big thing.
23:40Two and a half hours.
23:41Two and a half hours.
23:43So, when we go the next holiday, will you be staying in one hotel, and I'll be staying in the
23:48hostel?
23:49It has its advantage as I always like, yes.
23:54Of course I would want you in the next place I go to.
23:57You're only saying that.
23:58I'm not.
23:58I'm not.
24:28I'm not.
24:29You're only saying that.
24:30I'm not.
24:30I'm not.
24:30I'm not.
