00:21I have a very bad feeling about this.
00:23One will get a luxury trip.
00:26I'm nervous.
00:26While the other one will travel budget style.
00:31This is high road, low road.
00:35This is amazing.
00:36Amazing.
00:43I'm very excited, hence the very large suitcase
00:47because it could be skiing in Switzerland or bowling in Bradford.
00:51Please let it be Switzerland.
00:53Flo McSweeney is a singer and TV presenter.
00:56Formerly of Moving Hearts fame,
00:58she was also a presenter on RTE's travel series, No Frontiers.
01:03Beijing.
01:04Wouldn't that be amazing?
01:05Barcelona.
01:07Bergen.
01:07Go on, tell us.
01:09I've always known where I'm going,
01:10so this time I have no idea where I'm going.
01:12It's terrifying and exhilarating as they thought.
01:15Leslie Dowdo is a singer best known for fronting the band into a new one.
01:20She's recently been back on stage performing along with Flo on an Irish tour.
01:25Where are we going?
01:26I don't know.
01:26Alicante?
01:27No.
01:28Liverpool, yes.
01:29Isle of Man, yes.
01:31Seattle would be better though, wouldn't it?
01:32Yes.
01:33The Isle of Man.
01:34Seattle.
01:35Well, let's see.
01:37Okay.
01:38That's it.
01:39Oh, wow.
01:41Cape Town.
01:42Woo!
01:42Unbelievable.
01:43I've never been there.
01:44Cape Town.
01:45Woo-hoo!
01:45So it's Table Mountain and the nearby beaches and vineyards of Cape Town for our celebrities.
01:51But who will be going high, and who will be going low?
01:55Okay, I'll take a...
01:56I know what...
01:58Woo!
01:58Woo!
01:59Woo!
02:01Sorry.
02:03Woof, woof, woof, woof.
02:05Sorry, not sorry.
02:06Not a bit sorry.
02:09So Flo gets to enjoy business class, but his economy all the way for Lesley, as they
02:15both fly via Amsterdam, 11 hours south to Cape Town.
02:20A 20-minute transfer takes them into the city.
02:24But where will they be staying?
02:28Hello.
02:30Very beautiful, I could get used to this.
02:32Thank you, sir.
02:33Oh!
02:34Stop!
02:35Stop!
02:36God, it's huge.
02:38Where's the bedroom?
02:40Ah, look.
02:42Oh, my God.
02:45Look, it's so lovely.
02:48The luxury five-star Cape Grace Hotel sits in the heart of the V&A waterfront.
02:53It has 113 rooms and suites, a terrace pool, a spa, a gym and a variety of bars and restaurants,
03:01including a library lounge.
03:03And let's see what view I have.
03:06Oh, wow.
03:07The marina.
03:09And over there, Table Mountain.
03:13Spectacular.
03:14Sorry, Lesley.
03:15Oh, yeah.
03:16How is Lesley getting on?
03:21Curiosity, great name.
03:23It says here, no lift, elevate yourself.
03:26Seriously, Lesley.
03:31Wow, it's so spacious.
03:35Kitchenette for all the cooking I'm going to be doing.
03:37I've got my own microwave.
03:38How many people are coming here tonight?
03:41One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
03:44Is there going to be eight people in here?
03:45It's a loo.
03:46It's fine.
03:47It's clean.
03:48If I get bored, I can do a bit of mopping, you know?
03:52Set in the heart of the city's Greenpoint neighbourhood, two kilometres from the V&A waterfront,
03:58the Curiosity Apart Hotel offers private rooms and backpacker dormitories.
04:04It has an outdoor lounge and bar, barbecue facilities and an on-site cafe and restaurant.
04:10I'm looking for the swimming pool.
04:12I'm in paradise.
04:14Take a picture of this for Flo.
04:20Often referred to as the mother city, Cape Town is South Africa's oldest town.
04:26It's a vibrant cosmopolitan destination.
04:29There's buzzing shops and restaurants in the V&A waterfront, plenty of sandy beaches nearby,
04:34and all of this under the shadow of the iconic Table Mountain.
04:39Over the next few days, our celebrities will get to experience the joys of Cape Town
04:43and the Western Cape province, but from two very different perspectives.
04:51What's that I see in the distance?
04:53Is it an Irish celebrity prowling the desert?
04:57Ah, it's Flo.
04:58You look a bit lost there.
05:00Do you need a lift?
05:02I'm going to have a kind of a joy ride on a sand dune.
05:05I believe it's kind of terrifying.
05:07Ah, what are you worried about, Flo?
05:09That looks like a very leisurely spin to me.
05:18Oh, good God!
05:21Ah!
05:25Oh, sweet Mother Divine!
05:29This handle is called the Jesus Handle.
05:31I've got one hand on the Jesus Handle and the other hand on the Mary and Joseph Handle.
05:41We're going over the edge.
05:43Ah!
05:46You weren't expecting that.
05:47No I wasn't!
05:48We do it again!
05:49We're going to do it again.
05:52My head is still slightly spinning, but it was fun.
05:55It was exhilarating.
05:56My children would be extremely proud of me.
05:59It was fun, really fun.
06:02Leslie's been staying in the Curiosity Apart Hotel,
06:05which offers its residents the opportunity
06:08to book a range of cultural experiences,
06:10including the Black Route walking tour of downtown Cape Town.
06:15This is a historical building called the Slave Lodge.
06:18This is where slaves have been a host.
06:21So if you are a European and you want a slave,
06:25you're first going to come down and you purchase a slave from here.
06:30People could walk in and say, I'll have that guy.
06:33Well, that happened.
06:33Wow.
06:35As well as covering the history of slavery on this walking tour,
06:38you get to understand the challenges brought about by apartheid,
06:42by the people who had to live it.
06:43So, Peter, how did you get through apartheid?
06:46First of all, when as a kid you were born into the system,
06:49and of course you think that it must be like that,
06:52and then you realize this is not right,
06:54that you are being looked at and treated as a lesser human being.
06:59I can't even imagine how that must have felt.
07:01Things have changed for the better,
07:03but people also need to know where we are coming from.
07:06These benches present the segregation.
07:09You were not allowed to sit together, walk together, anything.
07:13That was the reality of apartheid.
07:16Today, the two of us can sit together on the bench.
07:18Yes, yes.
07:19Yeah, why not?
07:20In the past, I could have gone to jail for this.
07:23I never thought in my lifetime I'm going to sit next to a white human.
07:28Jailerity Day.
07:32That is the City Hall.
07:33This is actually the pride of our city.
07:36On February the 11th, 1990,
07:39thousands of people gathered in this square as Nelson Mandela
07:42stood on the balcony of City Hall and addressed them,
07:45just hours after his release from prison.
07:49That's the speech that he had in his hands.
07:51And that little piece of paper was saying,
07:53never and never again will it ever happen in South Africa
07:57where people have been separated, discriminated on the base of their color.
08:01That changed the whole history of South Africa.
08:04I remember the day I actually watched Nelson Mandela on the television.
08:08I'm being brought to tears.
08:10But to be here in Cape Town talking to people who've lived through it is...
08:14I'll care to speak.
08:15That moves.
08:18Do we have this?
08:30Table Mountain is the undisputed star of Cape Town's skyline.
08:34And for tourists, it's a must-see.
08:37The handiest way to do that is on board the cable car.
08:43God, it's big, Cape Town, isn't it?
08:45Nice.
08:46And way out there is Robben Island.
08:49I know, yeah.
08:50Mandela was there.
08:5127 years.
08:52That's extraordinary.
08:55Leslie and Flo have recently been touring together for the very first time.
09:00Although they were both fronting bands in the 80s,
09:02they didn't become friends until a chance meeting many years later.
09:07We bumped into each other in the supermarket, got chatting.
09:09And she said, do you want to go for a jar?
09:11For the one.
09:12For the one.
09:13Yeah, and eight hours later, we said, well, we have the one we came for.
09:18I suppose in our 20s, we would have been more competitive.
09:21But as you get older, it's just so much more about supporting and championing each other.
09:26Here we are championing.
09:27Here we are championing.
09:28I'll champion you.
09:29You can champion me.
09:33Over on the low road, Leslie's out exploring amongst the brightly coloured cottages of Bokal,
09:40which is the historical centre of the Cape Malay culture in Cape Town.
09:44Really unique.
09:45It's really colourful.
09:47A popular eatery here is the tea garden at Faiza's home kitchen,
09:50where you can sample Cape Malay cuisine.
09:54Hello.
09:55Hello.
09:56This is my home.
09:57Your home?
09:58That's incredible.
09:59I've never heard of anyone doing this.
10:00Well, I'm unique, you see.
10:03So what's in this?
10:04It's basically a donut that has, what, five spices in it?
10:08Wow.
10:09Dumped into warm syrup with coconut.
10:13Mmm.
10:15Delicious.
10:16I'm a donut lover, but these are so different because of all the spices in them.
10:19Give me authentic cooking any day.
10:22Wonderful.
10:39Pretty impressive, huh?
10:42A wildlife safari is on the wish list of every single tourist that comes to South Africa.
10:47If you're based in Cape Town, one option is to take a two-hour drive out to Aquila Private Game
10:53Reserve.
10:55Flo has done just that, and she's going to stay the night.
10:59Ah, stop.
11:02Ah, lads.
11:03Wow.
11:05Ah, look.
11:07God, it's huge.
11:08Oh, that's beautiful.
11:10Yep, this'll do.
11:13As the sun begins to set, Flo heads out on her private guided safari.
11:19The African elephant.
11:21The majestic one.
11:23It's just amazing to see them here, you know, where they're supposed to be.
11:27It's a privilege.
11:34These are very dangerous and the most dangerous in the Big Five family.
11:39The Big Five?
11:40Yeah, I know them.
11:41There's the elephant, the lion, the rhino, the legend, I mean the leopard, and the buffalo.
11:51Are they fast?
11:52Very fast.
11:52They are fast?
11:53They are two times to nearly three times faster than myself.
11:57Wow.
11:59Okay.
12:04This is dream come true stuff.
12:07What about poor Leslie?
12:09Is she going to miss out?
12:10Oh, no.
12:12She's taking the option of a day trip out to Aquila and is out on a group safari.
12:18Elephant's coming up.
12:21Oh, my God.
12:22Oh, my God.
12:25This gracefully walked by us.
12:28Gobsmacked.
12:29Gobsmacked.
12:29Amazing.
12:33Come aboard on my private tour.
12:37Ah, would you look at that.
12:38Just two lionesses on the prowl.
12:42Sephra.
12:43Oh, my God.
12:45This is very special.
12:46It is incredible.
12:47I mean, you could never forget this.
12:49No.
12:49Ah, fantastic memories, ladies.
12:52And that's without even spotting a lion.
12:54Oh, there's one.
12:55Oh, sorry.
12:56Oh, my God.
12:57Oh, my God.
13:02Oh, my God.
13:03Oh, my God.
13:04Oh, my God.
13:04Oh, my God.
13:04Oh, my God.
13:05Oh, my God.
13:07Oh, my God.
13:14Oh, my God.
13:16Don't need to be scared, ladies.
13:17Look at him.
13:18That lion's ready for his pipe and slippers.
13:30On High Road, Low Road, the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town is a surprise destination for our celebrities and great
13:38buddies, Flo McSweeney and Leslie Dowdall.
13:42Flo struck lucky with the luxury trip.
13:45I feel I could get used to this.
13:46While Leslie drew the short straw and is traveling on a budget.
13:50No lift.
13:51Elevate yourself.
13:52Seriously, lads.
13:55In a city where you're surrounded by stunning scenery, you should really get yourself up onto a rooftop.
14:02I'm very impressed.
14:03It's kind of like being on a Hollywood film set.
14:05It's kind of unbelievable.
14:07And look, you've got Table Mountain just over behind you.
14:10Yeah.
14:11But the cloud on top of the tablecloth.
14:13Half a tablecloth.
14:14Yes.
14:15Are you enjoying it so far, Leslie?
14:18Amazing.
14:18I mean, I'm so far absolutely loving it.
14:21Can't wait for what's next.
14:23I know.
14:24So what is coming up next, Flo?
14:26Well, you could look behind you.
14:29What?
14:30No.
14:32No way.
14:33Hello.
14:34Hello.
14:34Hello.
14:35Morning.
14:36That's amazing.
14:37What a beautiful car.
14:39Now that is the high road.
14:41A chauffeur, a chauffeur-driven vintage Chevrolet spinning you out into the South African countryside.
14:47How old is the car?
14:48How old is the car?
14:491950 model, which makes it 75 years old.
14:52Wow.
14:52Wow.
14:53So, where are we off to?
14:55Is it the vineyards?
14:56Wine country.
14:58Yes.
14:58Wine country.
14:59Yes.
15:25Wine country.
15:26Yay.
15:26What about the red?
15:27I normally don't drink red wine, but it's quite smooth.
15:30It's lovely.
15:32Hmm.
15:33Very nice.
15:34But what's happening over on the low road?
15:37Thank you very much.
15:37All right.
15:41It's absolutely stunning.
15:43We've got horses, vineyards.
15:44Gorgeous.
15:46Vineyards on the low road?
15:48Well, as it happens, wine tasting trips in South Africa's Western Cape are accessible
15:52to tourists on any budget.
15:54This French Hook tram network allows you to sip your way through the French Hook Valley.
16:00First stop for Leslie is at Rickety Bridge, where she has chosen a wine blending experience.
16:06We're finding out which wine you like.
16:08We're trying to establish the base.
16:10You like the mellow, right?
16:11Yes.
16:12You start off with maybe 60%.
16:14Okay.
16:15And then that 60, you can...
16:16Into my glass?
16:17Amazing.
16:18So maybe 20?
16:19Okay, 20 of this.
16:19Yeah.
16:20And then, yeah.
16:21Now I'm taking another 30% of the Shiraz to add to my blend.
16:25Here we go.
16:26Wish me luck.
16:27Venus crust.
16:30Velvet.
16:31Great, Leslie.
16:31Now you can transfer those percentages into a bottle.
16:36I've just blended my own wine.
16:38It cost me only 30 euros for this experience.
16:43Back on the high road, they're looking for a bottle opener.
16:47Yep.
16:47Well, that'll do it.
16:49Woo!
16:51Fantastic.
16:53Look at that.
16:55Yeah.
16:55You see the clinker?
16:56Yeah.
16:56But you see the thickness of the glass.
16:58I'd have you cut my onions at home.
17:00Woo!
17:02That tram looks like grey crack.
17:04I hope Leslie's got a sweet tooth.
17:06Because at her next stop, as she soaks up the panoramic views,
17:09she's going to get to taste some brownies.
17:13Brownie is delicious.
17:15Gorgeous.
17:16Gave this the road.
17:17Stay now.
17:19I hear you, Leslie.
17:26So back to Cape Town and an exterior exhibition.
17:30The Long March to Freedom.
17:32With a hundred striking bronze sculptures telling one incredible story.
17:38The 350 year journey through South Africa's liberation history.
17:44Just beautifully done.
17:46Because when it starts back there, it's Zulu's tribal.
17:50And then right up to the top with Winnie and Nelson Mandela.
17:56The work that must have gone into them.
17:58Yeah.
17:59Very moving.
18:03Professor Kader Asmal, 1934.
18:06An anti-apartheid activist.
18:09And he was exiled in London and later in Dublin.
18:12A professor of law of Trinity.
18:15Desmond Tutu is up there.
18:17Isn't it a beautiful likeness?
18:18Yeah.
18:19It does look like he's looking for a hug.
18:22I'd hug you.
18:25You shared the same birthday.
18:27Nelson Mandela and idols.
18:28I didn't know that, Leslie.
18:30I was an idol today.
18:33350 years from way down the back where it starts.
18:35The Long March to Freedom.
18:36Really is quite an incredible exhibition.
18:41Situated right beside the marina and the luxurious yachts, sits Flo's luxurious hotel.
18:48A nice location indeed for some afternoon tea.
18:53Smoked salmon, some caviar and the lemon mousse underneath.
18:57Very tasty.
18:58Avocado mousse.
19:00Yeah, that's nice.
19:01Mmm.
19:03I actually thought the timer was the length of time I was allowed to stay here before I had to
19:07get out.
19:08But apparently it's for the length of time it takes the tea to diffuse.
19:14Oh, that's very pretty.
19:16All for me?
19:17I have a desperate sweet tooth.
19:22Mmm.
19:24Me like.
19:25Oh, God, that's lovely.
19:29Mmm.
19:30Mmm.
19:32Oh, my God, I'm going to be in a total food coma.
19:45There is no shortage of beautiful beaches in and around Cape Town.
19:49But Boulders Beach, an hour's drive south of the city, offers something extra special.
19:54It is home to these lads.
19:57I thought you only saw penguins in Antarctica.
20:00Yeah.
20:00And here they are in South Africa.
20:02Oh, that's beautiful.
20:04Absolutely stunning.
20:05It is extraordinary to see them in their natural environment.
20:09Yeah, absolutely.
20:11These African penguins rocked up here in the 80s and they're still kicking around.
20:16For these lads, this is some quality real estate.
20:19I'm not surprised they chose this beach.
20:21I would too.
20:24Oh, look at that one.
20:25That's extraordinary.
20:26That's so cute.
20:27That's how I imagine them.
20:28That's the water you expect to see.
20:31African penguins are social breeders and nests in colonies.
20:34They become an adult after one year.
20:36Yeah.
20:37Courtship is three weeks.
20:38Perfect.
20:39Perfect.
20:40She gets negotiations done quickly.
20:44Set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, sits Kirsten Bosch Botanical Gardens, acclaimed
20:51as one of the finest botanical gardens in all the world.
20:55This is my kind of thing.
20:56I love gardens.
20:57I love nature.
20:59Can't wait to walk around and see all the amazing vegetation and plants.
21:03Bird of paradise.
21:05They're extraordinary looking.
21:07Beautiful.
21:08They look like birds.
21:09That's why they're called birds of paradise.
21:14This is the King Protea, one of the most national flowers of South Africa.
21:18Absolutely stunning.
21:22My mother always said, a garden is not a garden without a good scuffle.
21:29One of the main attractions here at Kirsten Bosch is the tree canopy walkway.
21:34Wow.
21:35Wow.
21:35Wow.
21:36Wow.
21:36Wow.
21:37Wow.
21:39Wow.
21:40Wow.
21:40Wow.
21:59Wow.
22:03This is Table Mountain.
22:06Pretty spectacular.
22:10The ridges behind the mountain is the 12 apostles.
22:14So down here we have Benry Bay.
22:17Look at the color of the water.
22:19Gorgeous.
22:20So clear.
22:22It's a pretty gorgeous experience.
22:24Wow.
22:28We are coming down.
22:29I thought we were going back to the helipad.
22:31No.
22:32We stopping here.
22:34We are.
22:39You know when we got to Dublin airport and I got the luxury package, I knew it was going
22:43to be fab, but I mean, yeah, this has just been extraordinary.
22:47And Francois, my pilot, he's just waiting over there in the fields with the helicopter to bring me home.
23:02Here we are in Cape Town.
23:03So, Flo, how was it?
23:04Unbelievable.
23:05It's been quite a whirlwind, hasn't it?
23:08What was your highlight, Leslie, of the trip?
23:10I did the walking tour with this lovely man, Peter.
23:13He showed us around the whole of Cape Town and the whole story of apartheid.
23:16So that was very moving, I thought, for me.
23:19And you?
23:20Sand dunes, which I thought was going to be terrifying.
23:22It was exhilarating.
23:24And going in the 1950s Chevrolet, that was beautiful.
23:27And then helicopter.
23:30Everything, everything we did was pretty amazing.
23:33Would you do it again with me?
23:34Absolutely.
23:35Ah, that's nice.
23:37Now then, would our duet have a song to finish us off with?
23:40Winter, spring, summer or fall
