00:00Well, happy Sunday. Thanks so much for spending some time with us here. I'm Christy Paul.
00:04And I'm Brianna Keeler. It is 6.01 on the East Coast. Thanks for joining us for New Day Sunday.
00:10We have breaking news overnight. A week-long kidnapping ordeal is over. The suspect dead,
00:14his captive safe, and hopefully soon to be reunited with her father.
00:18If not already.
00:20All right, let's go to Florida ourselves here. An old power plant came crashing down yesterday,
00:24kind of like a tower of Legos. All righty, so what's your punishment for missing just one day
00:32of work in the major leagues, mind you? Okay, well, we can ask Gayrod. You know,
00:36he can tell us. New reports show that...
00:49All right, Christy, let's go around the world now. First to Spain, where authorities say they
00:53have busted a human trafficking ring that spanned nearly the entire globe. And CNN's Al Goodman is
00:59in Madrid with that. Al? A gang that smuggled Chinese. Back to you, Brianna.
01:05Thank you, Al. And now to Egypt, where supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi are refusing to
01:10leave the streets despite repeated warnings. CNN's Arwa Damon is in Cairo. Arwa?
01:16It's the first working day and children. Back to you, Brianna. Arwa, thank you very much. And let's
01:22go now to Israel, where some are wondering what impact the prime minister's health scare could have
01:26on Palestinian peace talks. CNN's Vladimir Dutier is in Jerusalem. Vlad?
01:31Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Cox. Back to you, Brianna.
01:35Vlad, thank you very much. And now over to you, Christy.
01:38All right, next, guys, we're going to show you what's ahead for the new week on Monday.
01:41This is what you have. The verdict watch will continue. Oh, that's Tuesday. Well, on Monday,
01:46the verdict watch will continue in the trial of reputed Boston crime boss James Whitey Bulger. He is
01:51accused of racketeering, extortion, and being involved in 19 killings. So far, jurors have
01:56deliberated for 28 hours over four days. And then on Wednesday, you've got a couple of things going on.
02:02The Republican National Committee is going to be heading for Boston for their summer meeting. New
02:08Jersey Governor Chris Christie is among those scheduled to speak. The theme of the four-day
02:12event is making it happen. And then it's always a struggle with this thing. It makes me feel like
02:19I'm not all that smart, but I'm trying here. Also on Wednesday, former Representative Jesse
02:24Jackson Jr. and his wife are going to be sentenced in a D.C. courtroom. Prosecutors won a sentence of
02:29four years in prison for Jackson for misusing $750,000 in campaign funds. And then on Friday,
02:37this is a good one. This is back to school in Moore, Oklahoma. You probably remember that tornado
02:46that hit there. So devastating. And public schools have been closed since May when that struck the
02:52city. Makeshift schools have been set up for the ones that were destroyed. Then on Sunday,
02:57this is a story that we've been following all week. The recall Bob Filner campaign is going to
03:02start collecting signatures. 11 women now have accused the mayor of sexual harassment. Christie,
03:08over to you. Brianna, technology has made all of us feel stupid at some point. You are not alone,
03:15I promise you. I do this every week and I'm getting worse at it. Trust me, it's the whole thing.
03:21It's not
03:22you. I promise. Okay, it's not me. The person is in an Idaho hospital this morning. She's waiting
03:26for a reunion with her father. We understand that hasn't happened yet. The sheriff says that
03:30physically she is in good shape. Physically, but I mean emotionally, we've been watching and we've
03:36been tense. You can imagine what this has been like for her. A week on the run with this alleged
03:41captor, James DiMaggio. And then you've got to bear in mind the fact that her mother and her brother
03:45were killed, also allegedly by DiMaggio. So Eric Fisher is a psychologist and author. We're so glad
03:51that you're with us. I just wanted to ask you, first of all, she's 16 years old. Now, I understand
03:56she was met at the hospital, not only by medical personnel, but by crisis counselors. So what is the
04:01first thing that they're going to do for her? A lot of times they're going to find out. The friends
04:05say,
04:05well, she, and maybe she didn't want to rock the boat too much. She just, it sort of struck her
04:09as a
04:09little weird, but maybe not something very alarming. Is there a pattern to what a person
04:16like Hannah may be experiencing having gone through this ordeal? It's really going to depend,
04:21have the familiarity with this SpongeBob toy and things like that. But like I said,
04:24the SpongeBob thing could eventually possibly become the thing that continues to bring her grief
04:29because it's a reminder of her loss too. So it's going to depend on her as an individual
04:33how she responds. Well, I mean, not only was she kidnapped, but then you've got her mother and her
04:38brother murdered in such a grisly manner. I mean, what is the process for her in terms of therapy
04:44and recovery? It's talking about it a lot. You know, I mean, people think- What verbiage do you
04:49use? What don't you use with her? Is there any right wrong here? Well, there isn't any real right
04:55and wrong other than, you know, be careful by how she moves through this in a support system. Yeah,
05:00because you never know what little thing might jolt her into just feeling overwhelmed by it.
05:04But Dr. Eric Fisher, thank you so much. We appreciate you being here. All righty. Some
05:10mystery millionaires in New Jersey have been awfully quiet down there. Who are they? We
05:16don't know. Well, one of the live there this morning. Good morning, Shane. Time to talk about
05:21the PGA Golf Championship in New York. And you can just forget about the big names like Tiger Woods
05:25and Phil Mickelson. Yeah, it's 43-year-old Jim Furyk in Rochester. And gosh, you know, he's got- It's
05:32so
05:32tough today. So hard. You know, working in the office. Shane, come on.
05:39This is the best office in the world. It's the final major of the year. Good morning,
05:43Christy. Good morning, Brianna. All right. One-stroke lead. Anything can happen. We know you
05:47will be watching. Shane O'Donoghue live there in Rochester. Thanks for that.
05:52Meeting up on Sanjay Gupta, M.D. at the bottom of the hour. Good morning, Sanjay.
05:58All righty. It was the office pool that paid off big time. 16 workers at a county garage in New
06:03Jersey pooled their money and ended up with one of the three winning Powerball tickets.
06:07Now, they have actually kept mum about their millions until now. And CNN's Deborah Farrick
06:12is joining us with their story. Hey, Deb. Hey there, Brianna. Hey there, Christy. Well,
06:16you've heard of George Clooney, Brad. All righty. What about that third winner, though?
06:20We know anything? Yeah, well, yes. I'm here on a Sunday
06:23morning, so clearly it was not me. That's all I'm saying. Okay? However, we do know that
06:29it was sold in the state where I grew up. So, you know, throw a little my way, a little
06:33love here. New Jersey, South Brunswick, to be precise, at a super stop and shop. And I
06:39do want to give a shout out to the store that sold the ticket to the Ocean 16 Acme. It's
06:43Acme in Egg Harbor. And they plan to give some of their proceeds as well to some of the
06:47Superstorm Sandy victims. Christy, Brianna. All right, Deb, thanks. We'll just keep having
06:52to buy our tickets, I guess. We'll see you right back here at the top of the hour, 8
06:56o'clock Eastern, for more of New Day Sunday. Sandra Gupta-MD begins right now.
07:03Hey there. Good morning, everyone. I'm Brianna Keeler.
07:05And I'm Christy Paul. 8 a.m. on the East Coast and early 5 a.m. in the West. We're
07:09in pressure
07:10up for this New Day Sunday, but glad you're with us.
07:12And new this morning, a kidnapping suspect shot dead. His captive is safe after an agonizing
07:18week-long ordeal. A San Diego father will get his daughter back.
07:22Yeah, CNN's Miguel Marquez working the story in Cascade.
07:25From there, you've got a group of New Jersey workers, and they're feeling a whole lot richer
07:29this morning. Yeah, 16 people have claimed their share of the winning Powerball prize.
07:33What can you tell us about the latest winners, Deb?
07:36Well, the first thing I can tell you is that they are actually very, very...
07:40What do we all?
07:40Wow. That's exactly right. So no worries. That's the best thing about all of this. And
07:45as a single purchaser, he gets ticked. That means is they each walk away with about $3.5
07:50million, clearly a life-changing amount, certainly if invested well. Guys?
07:56We're still waiting, though, for that third winner, right? To figure out, at least let us
08:01know who they are.
08:03Exactly.
08:04Did you buy a ticket best?
08:05Yeah, as discussed, it's none of us, because here we are all chatting together.
08:09Though it's our work ethic, I like to believe, that keeps us showing up every day, day in,
08:13day out. Exactly. Hallelujah. Well, it was not me, but it was sold in my home state of
08:18New Jersey. South Brunswick, to be precise, it is super. Stop and Shop, and each of those
08:23stores get a percentage of the winning. So that's good news for them as well.
08:27Yeah, we keep working. I keep working until the check cleared, maybe.
08:32I keep working, and I just think nothing would really sort of bother me. I don't know, there's
08:37something, knowing that you didn't have to, but you could, I think, would be sort of freeing
08:40in a way. He's right, though. There's a lot of peace.
08:43Financial peace of mind. Financial peace of mind. Financial peace of mind would be great.
08:45You live off the interest. And there is a lot to be said for waking up and having something
08:49to do. You're having a goal. I'm not saying I wouldn't take the occasional unpaid vacation,
08:54you know, like that might happen, probably. Might. That's right. I would see you in a year
08:58when I got back from traveling the world again. Exactly. All right, Deb, thank you so much.
09:04Okay, well, talking about hitting the jackpot, this 12-year-old boy in Arkansas, look at what
09:10he got. Right, he can go for a little diamond hunt. Sure, why not? Well, Tiger Woods, you know,
09:15he was hoping for a miracle at the PGA Golf. It's Sunday, so I'm sure you're getting ready
09:20for your week ahead. And in news, we have a pretty busy one. On Monday, we are watching
09:26for the verdict, continuing in the trial of reputed Boston crime boss James Whitey Bulger.
09:32He is accused of racketeering, extortion, and being involved in 19 killings. Now, so far,
09:38jurors have deliberated for 28 hours over four days, so they'll keep going then. And then
09:43on Wednesday, we have the Republican National Committee. They are heading to Boston for their
09:48summer meeting. You've got New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. He's among those who are scheduled
09:52to speak. And the whole theme of the four-day event is making it happen. Wednesday, a busy day.
09:58Also, we are awaiting for the sentencing for Jesse Jackson Jr., former member of Congress,
10:04as well as his wife. This is going to take place in a D.C. courtroom. Prosecutors want a sentence
10:09of four years in prison for Jackson for misusing $750,000 in campaign funds. And then on Friday,
10:17we got a good story for you. It is back to school in Moore, Oklahoma. Public schools there have been
10:23closed since May when that massive tornado struck the city. Makeshift schools had been set up for the
10:30ones that were destroyed. So that's a good thing that you have coming on Friday. I'm sure that those
10:34guys are ready to get back to school. And then on Sunday in San Diego, the Recall Bob Filner campaign
10:41will start collecting signatures. Eleven women now have accused the mayor of sexual harassment.
10:46And so that's going to be an interesting day as they try to get him to go. Christy, over to
10:53you.
10:53Brianna, thank you so much. Want to see what's ahead at the top of the hour on CNN State of
10:57the Union.
10:57Candy Crowley here. You know, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is recovering
11:02from hernia surgery this morning. The 63-year-old was found, Simon Kruger, nearly 24 hours after
11:07that he wandered away from his family. And he was found less than half a mile away, so not too
11:13far.
11:13Oh my gosh, thank goodness. Isn't that cute? That's sweet. And we think dogs are man's best
11:19friend. Kangaroos, so adorable. Well, thank you so much for watching today. It was so fun to be with you,
11:24Christy. No, thank you. We'll coordinate again next time too, right? Yeah, definitely. Total fluke.
11:27State of the Union with Candy Crowley starts now. Go make some great memories today.
