00:00Finding out their fate. The first ever parole hearing in the Menendez brothers case is underway.
00:05Will Eric and Lyle Menendez be granted release after spending more than 30 years in prison for murdering their parents?
00:12Right now, a pivotal hearing is underway in California where the Menendez brothers have their closest chance at freedom in
00:18nearly three decades.
00:19In May, a judge reduced the sentences of Eric and Lyle Menendez for the 1989 murders of their parents.
00:25They have been serving life without parole for the killings. Eric's parole hearing is happening right now and Lyle's is
00:32tomorrow.
00:32Both men have maintained they killed their parents in self-defense after years of abuse by their father, Jose Menendez.
00:39If they're granted parole, their release won't be immediate. California Governor Gavin Newsom would have the final say there.
00:45CNN's Jean Casares is following the story for us. Jean, huge interest in the outcome of this hearing today, which
00:52also could give us a sense of what will happen tomorrow.
00:55Absolutely. And we believe that at the conclusion, we will ultimately find out today of Eric.
01:01And so remember two homicides and those could be looked at individually also in all of this, but they've got
01:08a lot on their side because they have instrumentally developed programs in the prison for the other inmates.
01:14They do have some prison violations. We don't know what they were through the years, but we also know the
01:19family support is there.
01:20There are 12 members inside that room vying for them, wanting them to be released.
01:2612 others said what he might do if the parole board makes a decision here.
01:31No, he hasn't, but it sure is an interesting question.
01:34We'll be watching this very carefully. Boris?
01:36Very close eye on Hurricane Aaron. The still unusually large storm is impacting almost the entire East Coast, all the
01:43way from Florida to Maine,
01:44even though it's staying well offshore. And right now, Aaron is moving north-northeast as a Category 2 hurricane.
01:51It is roughing up seas hundreds of miles from its center, fueling dangerous rip currents, storm surge and flood risks
01:58just because of the sheer size of the storm.
02:00The cloud field extends more than 1,500 miles north to south. That is just huge.
02:05North Carolina most impacted by this storm, and that is where CNN's Diane Gallagher is.
02:10Diane, you're there in Nags Head on the Outer Banks. How's it looking there?
02:15In California, Democrats are trying to nullify those additional House seats that Republicans are projected to pick up with their
02:22new congressional map in Texas.
02:24Governor Gavin Newsom is talking about that with two brilliant political minds, who are, by the way, some of our
02:28favorite Californians.
02:29Kendra Barker.
02:30On to some of the other headlines that we're watching this hour.
02:32A case of bubonic plague has been reported in California.
02:36Officials believe the person was bitten by an infixed.
02:38Some military families reportedly say a DOD hiring freeze has left them struggling to find child care for months, compounding
02:46what has long been a chronic problem for military families.
02:49Some say they've actually had to quit their jobs or break their budgets.
02:53A closer look at this crisis and what's being done to address it right after this.
02:57And no swim warnings up and down the East Coast, where Hurricane Aaron is sideswiping several states, causing dangerous rip
03:04currents, flooding, and beach erosion.
03:06We're following these major developing stories and many more, all coming in right here to CNN News Central.
03:12We're joined now by legal analysts and trial attorneys.
03:14New developments today in the political slugfest over redistricting in both Texas and California.
03:19A short time ago in Austin, a key state Senate committee approved redrawn congressional maps that passed through the House
03:26yesterday.
03:27The full Senate could vote on that new map as early as tonight.
03:31And in response, lawmakers in California are debating a series of proposals that could put a new map in the
03:37hands of voters this November.
03:39If all goes to plan, Democrats could pick up another five House seats on Capitol Hill, matching what Republicans are
03:46hoping to do with Texas.
03:48CNN's Steve Contorno is at the California State House in Sacramento.
03:51Steve, how soon could lawmakers actually vote on this?
03:57Imminently, Brianna, we expect you and Governor Gavin Newsom would sign them later today.
04:03But really then, the fight just begins.
04:05There are 75 days until the November 4th election, and Newsom and Democrats will spend that time trying to convince
04:14voters to override this very popular independent redistricting commission in the name of beating Donald Trump.
04:21There is already significant opposition forming, even be an issue.
04:27Yeah, that really says something.
04:28Steve Contorno, thank you so much for the live report from Sacramento.
04:31Boris?
04:32This just in, CNN has exclusively learned that school officials in Uvalde, Texas, are holding back key documents despite a
04:41court order for their release following the May 2022 shooting.
04:4419 students and two teachers were killed.
04:47More than a dozen others were injured.
04:49And the omission of key documents is stirring some new pain among survivors and the family member of victims.
04:56CNN's Lee, after decades in prison, brothers Eric and Lyle Menendez get their closest chance at freedom.
05:02A pivotal parole hearing is happening today in California, and if parole is recommended, their fate will be in the
05:08hands of Governor Gavin Newsom.
05:11We are closely tracking a highly anticipated parole hearing happening now in California.
05:17Eric Menendez is facing the state's parole board three and a half decades after he and his brother Lyle murdered
05:22their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion.
05:24Lyle's hearing is tomorrow.
05:27In May, a judge reduced their sentences, opening the door to their possible release.
05:31Both brothers have admitted to the killings but claim they were abused by their father for years and that they
05:36committed the murders in self-defense.
05:39CNN's Gene Casares is with us now on this story.
05:41Gene, we could learn very soon what the parole board decides here.
05:45Bring us up to speed.
05:46Well, everything we know.
05:49Speaker and former California Congressman Kevin McCarthy is now weighing in on the redistricting fight in his state.
05:55He told CNN earlier today that he's going to fundraise against Democrats' redistricting push, and he urged voters to reject
06:01the new map in November.
06:03All right, here's something that you definitely don't want to see while you were flying.
06:07It is a piece of the plane investigating this, Pete.
06:10No big deal for you, I suppose.
06:12But, you know, the average person looking at that is worried.
06:20And investigators will have a lot to look at here with all of this video and all these cameras pointed
06:25out the window as this was happening.
06:26This was on this Delta flight for Milano to Austin on Tuesday, and you could see that part of the
06:33trailing edge flap that's on the very back of the wing.
06:37They come out during takeoff and landing, ad-lift to the wing.
06:39It essentially changes the shape of the wing.
06:41They call it the camber of the wing.
06:43And that part clearly came in Austin.
06:47So it was an uneventful landing aside from this.
06:51Investigators will really have to figure out now, though, what caused this.
06:55Was this a maintenance-induced problem?
06:57Was it a recent maintenance?
06:58Let's just wear and tear the age of the airplane.
07:01This is a 25-year-old Boeing 737-800.
07:04So maybe a combination of all those things.
07:07They're just going to have to figure this out now.
07:09Thankfully, all is well that ends well.
07:11And it was a pretty empty flight, all told, about 70 people on board.
07:13So they got back to the gate okay.
07:15No harm, no foul.
07:16Could have been worse.
07:17There are worse parts of the wing, I can say in my expert opinion, that I would not want to
07:22see dangling.
07:22But that's pretty scary.
07:24Not so bad.
07:24I want to ask you about this group of passengers that is suing Delta and United because they're saying that
07:30they paid that, basically, that upcharge for window.
07:33This, we know this window seat.
07:34Yeah, the dreaded seat.
07:36You're like, oh, yeah.
07:37Team window seat gang.
07:38I've got the window seat.
07:38You get on there and you're like, what is going on?
07:42I feel like we've all had this happen.
07:43It's like the basement apartment.
07:45It feels like a Seinfeld bed.
07:47Like, I got a window seat, but I didn't get it.
07:49It's terrible.
07:49That was my, there you go.
07:51I mean, you kind of understand why they're suing.
07:53They say other companies are clear about that.
07:56Alaska and American, they say, are more transparent about this.
08:00But this is a suit so many people have a story about, and it is really something that aggravates so
08:07many.
08:09We'll see.
08:09I mean, I feel bad for my airline friends.
08:11They aren't commenting right now.
08:14United and Delta both not commenting about this.
08:16But it is something, it's definitely a talker, and people have all experienced this before.
08:20Yeah, the night, that's like my nightmare.
08:22Because if I sometimes need to see the horizon so I don't get a little woozy.
08:26And this is kind of the point that they make in the suit is that there are plenty of valid
08:28reasons to have a flap.
08:29Flap is flapping off.
08:30You want to be able to see it.
08:32Fittingly, yeah, if you want to be able to get good video of it.
08:33That's right.
08:34All good reasons.
08:35Pete, thank you so much as always.
08:37Appreciate it.
08:37Ahead, why the next show that you stream might be inspired by your zodiac sign.
