00:00Round two. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth grilled on Capitol Hill for a second day
00:04as President Trump is briefed on his options for the war in Iran with no easy answers for
00:09ending the conflict. And over a barrel, the price of oil hits the highest that it has been in years
00:16and gas prices are now up more than a buck 30 since the war began. The supply shock right now
00:21hurting Americans who can least afford the economic pain. Happening right now,
00:26Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is back on Capitol Hill, this time testifying before the
00:31Senate Armed Services Committee. He's again defending the war with Iran as he attempts to
00:36secure a $1.5 trillion defense budget. Today, he was asked about the various stated objectives for
00:43the war coming from the Trump administration. Here was his response. Zach Cohen has been closely
00:49monitoring this hearing today. Zach, what stood out so far in this one? Yeah, Brianna, for the second
00:53in a row, Secretary Hegseth grilled. And at the end of the day, that is really the clearest objective
00:58that the president and Hegseth have both set forth since starting this war over 60 days ago. And
01:04lawmaker, a Pentagon official said, was $25 billion, give or take. We reported last night that it's likely
01:10double that amount. Senator Blumenthal really pushing Hegseth and the Pentagon comptroller to explain
01:16that discrepancy. It appears that it did leave out some of the financial impacts of the war, including
01:21damage to bases, which we know was significant in the early days. Yeah. Give or take, maybe doing a
01:26lot of work there. Zach Cohen, thank you so much for the report. Boris? Following a second hearing for
01:32the man charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump during last weekend's White
01:36House Correspondents Dinner. This time, prosecutors urged the judge to keep Cole Allen in custody as he
01:42awaits trial, calling his plot one of, quote, extreme political violence. Prosecutors are also sharing new
01:48images of Allen, including a selfie that he took just before the attack, showing at least four
01:54weapons strapped to his body. CNN, tell us what it was like in there. What did you hear? What did
01:58you
01:58see? Well, this was supposed to be a hearing over whether Cole Allen should stay in jail.
02:06...inside the courtroom with you. We appreciate it. Boris?
02:08The reality... On the Hill, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth facing some tough questions about the war
02:14with Iran, as Americans feel its impact on everything from rising gas prices to the cost
02:19of fertilizer. And if at first you don't succeed, President Trump pulls his Surgeon General pick
02:25again and makes a third nomination for the role. That position is the nation's leading spokesperson
02:31on public health. And a text for following breaking news off of Capitol Hill, Defense Secretary Pete
02:36Hegseth just wrapping up a hearing on the cost of the war with Iran. Just moments ago, Democratic
02:42Senator Mark Kelly, who of course is a retired Navy captain, asked about the costs and the amount of
02:48munitions expended so far. Here's that moment. Bring in CNN's Brian Todd. All right, Brian,
02:54how did this come... I wonder how this compared to yesterday. What did we learn so far?
02:57Interesting, Brianna. That question, that was the most serious grill. Pete Hegseth's faith,
03:02his Christianity. He was pressed on that by Senator Reed. That was interesting. I think what stood
03:07out to us was that his most serious grilling was from at least two senators who pressed him on the
03:13rationale for the war and the lack of popularity of this war. Senator Gillibrand from New York and
03:18Senator Tammy Duckworth both saying there was no existential threat to the U.S. by Iran when this
03:23war started. Let's take a listen to the exchange with Senator Gillibrand when she talked about that
03:29and also just the unpopularity of the war. Now, that is something that he said often yesterday.
03:34We're two months in. The Democrats are hindering the war effort because they're naysayers, that
03:39they're being too negative about the war and it's public. What are you guys doing to investigate
03:42these people making money on prediction markets? He said, basically, we're all above board. We have
03:49to focus on the war effort. We're not really reviewing that. When there's a lot of focus on
03:55classified information, certainly there's a big concern of information, period, that the media
04:00might report. Yes. And when you're talking about prediction markets, you are talking about very
04:05sensitive classified information. Which she characterized as insider information. Now,
04:09Hex said the same. He was trying to kind of sidestep that issue, at least for now.
04:14Interesting. We'll see if he can continue to do that. Brian, thank you so much for checking out
04:18this hearing for us. Boris? We are following new developments as President Trump announces a third
04:23pick for Surgeon General. The president just pulled the nomination of Dr. Casey Means. He replaced her
04:29with a new contender, Dr. Nicole Sapphire. The president blaming Louisiana Republican Senator Bill
04:35Cassidy for this change after Dr. Means' nomination stalled on the Hill. Let's go to CNN Health
04:42Reporter Jacqueline Howard. All right, Jacqueline, maybe the third time is a term here. This is his third
04:47attempt for Surgeon General in his second term. Tell us more about Dr. Nicole Sapphire.
04:54That's right, Brianna. The nation has been waiting for a confirmed Surgeon General with
04:59Dr. Sapphire's nomination moving forward. So what happens when you don't have a Surgeon General in
05:06place? Why is it so important to get this going? Yeah, the Surgeon General is basically the nation's
05:13doctor. So, so, Brianna, this is for the country. All right, Jacqueline Howard, thank you so much.
05:19Still ahead, it's the court battle over open AI. Elon Musk taking the stand for another day of
05:25testimony in the trial against the tech company he helped start. Key moments from the case next.
05:32Grizzly and disturbing details are emerging in the murder case against singer David. David is accused
05:38of sexually abusing, killing, and dismembering 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. And in new
05:45court documents, prosecutors reveal not only a motive, but an unsettling timeline. They allege
05:51the murder and attempted cover-up happened at the same time that David was doing radio interviews
05:56and attending a release party for his first album. Celeste Rivas.
06:01Yeah, they are very disturbing, Brianna. We do want to warn you. The details to David,
06:07they say that he purchased a shovel, said that this was, quote, replete with hearsay. They feel
06:13it is one-sided and potentially could taint a future jury pool. Brianna?
06:19All right, Kyung Law, thank you for taking us through that. Boris?
06:22First time in nearly seven years, a commercial flight has traveled from the U.S. to Venezuela.
06:27American Airlines is the first U.S. carrier to relaunch a daily service to Caracas. The two
06:33countries are gradually normalizing relations after the ouster of Venezuela's authoritarian leader,
06:38Nicolas Maduro. CNN's David Culver filed this report just before he boarded the inaugural flight.
